Fort Worth Panthers @
California Quakes

Game #1:

California and Fort Worth start the series with a nail biter. California
jumped to a 6-4 lead with a 6-run in the bottom of the 4th, gave up the
lead in the top of the 6th and regained it in the bottom of the 7th.
But, Fort Worth proved their superiority in the top of the 9th with a
Milt Thompson 2-run pinch hit home run for a 8-7 Fort Worth victory.
California boasted the player of the series, however. McReynolds, 2-4
with 2 home runs and 4 RBI.

Fort Worth – 8

California – 7

Game #2:

Nothing but a brutal put-down by Fort Worth. 10 runs and 17 hits. Ugh.

Fort Worth – 10

California – 3

Game #3:

All eyes were on Keith Hernandez as he approached the 2000 hit mark.
But, first, let’s get to the shellacking. Top of the 4th, Fort Worth
plates 5 to jump out to what turned our to be an insurmountable lead.
But, it was Hernandez’ turn in the 5th, Hernandez facing Bautista …
let’s turn to the announcers … “Here’s the pitch from BAUTISTA …
lined toward short … just out of reach … AYES’s chasing it MCGRIFF’s
rounding second TRY FOR THIRD? (1-yes, 2-no*) they’re holding MCGRIFF at
second … as the throw comes in … and HERNANDEZ has a single 2nd
safety for HERNANDEZ. WooHoo!!! That’s Number 2,000! Woohoo!!! Yay!”

Fort Worth would go on to score two runs in the top of the 5th, and
would ultimately take the game 8-4. Pat Borders was the sole star in
this one for California, going 2-4 with a triple and a home run and 3
RBI.

Fort Worth – 8

California – 4

Game #4:

California put up a good fight in this one, out-hitting Fort Worth
16-10, but only managed 5 runs. Fort Worth and, particularly, Lonnie
Smith, made good work of California. On its way to 10 runs, Smith
smacked 2 home runs plating 5 in the game.

Fort Worth – 10

California – 5

Game #5:

Not a whole lot of offense in this one, with a total of 10 hits and 3
runs in the game. The big story, yes, is about another Fort Worth player
hitting a milestone. This time, Willie McGee approaches 1,000 hits.
Let’s pick up the announcers in the top of the 8th against Zane Smith:
“Here’s a pitch … MCGEE lashes one to right … toward the gap …
PHILLIPS races over but he won’t get it … MCGEE’s going for two …
and there will be a play at second … the tag safe!…on a very close
play … double for MCGEE … that’s his 2nd double of the game. WooHoo!!!
That’s Number 2,000! I mean, 1,000! Woohoo!!! Yay! I have a feeling this
kid is going to win the batting title one day …”

Despite Zane Smith’s great performance–9 IP w/ 0 ERs–California can’t
make up 2 unearned runs and takes another loss.

Fort Worth – 2

California – 1

Game #6:

California jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 1st off a Kent
Hrbek grand slam, but California simply couldn’t hold the lead. Fort
Worth, behind a 4-RBI night from Keith Hernandez, beats California 8-6.

Fort Worth – 8

California – 6

Game #7:

What could have been another record-setting day for Fort Worth, Carney
Lansford, who was 3 hits away from 1,500 hits, only gets two knocks and
closes the series with 1,499 … which is kinda poetic if you think
about it. Fort worth had their way with California all series, and this
is California’s nice way of saying “Not so fast, Texas.” Yep, we said
it, and we stopped Lansford. He only got 2 hits, and Fort Worth only got
2 runs. Kent Hrbek, with 2 home runs and 5 RBI, alone beat Fort Worth in
this one, and earned California’s first win in the series.

Fort Worth – 2

California – 6

Series Summary

*

Fort Worth had its way with California, taking the series 6-1 in the
7-game set, and notched 2 significant milestones for key teammates. But,
Hrbek had his way with Fort Worth batting .481 in 27 ABs with 7 runs, 14
RBI, 1 2B, and 5 HRs. So, there.

You can catch it all on the blog when I have the energy, hats off to a
great series for Cedar Park. My team is all out of whack suddenly.

Not trying to sound like a sore loser (LOL!) — it’s just WOW! We had
that series in our hands, and boom, now we have to play tough Detroit,
and I had to use Maddux for Game 7, which I would have loved for him to
kick off the series.

Long Beach Titans @ Clovis Cougars

Series Preview

With the season winding down 2nd place Long Beach heads north to meet
the 3rd place Clovis Cougars.

Game #1:

Brantley and Howell take Viola deep to lead Clovis to an 8-1 victory.
Bankhead tosses 7 strong innings to improve to 10-10.

Game #2:

Tom Gordon makes his debut for the Titans but Brantley and Howell do the
damage again driving in a pair each to pace the Cougars 6-4 win. Smiley
improves to 11-9

Game #3:

Fred Lynn’s 8th inning homer of Bryan Harvey breaks up a 2-2 tie as Long
Beach takes game 3 by a 4-2 score. Titan youngster Alex Madrid evened
his record at 1-1 while Mark Davis picked up his 31st save.

Game #4:

Long Beach ties up the series with an improbable 12-8, 12 inning game.
Titans were cruising 8-1 in the bottom of the ninth when Clovis erupted
for 7 runs with Gladden’s three run pinch hit homer the highlight. Now
tied the game became a question of who had the deeper bullpen; Titans
broke through against Brian Harvey for the second time in as many days
with Don Mattingley doubling in two to drive the stake through the
Cougars heart.

Game #5:

Clovis broke through against Tom Filer for two in the third and a single
run in the 4th for all they would need. Bannister and a foursome of
bullpen arms held the Titans to a single run. Clovis 3-1.

Game #6:

Cougars roughed up Frank Viola again, this time for 4 runs and 7 hits in
5.2 innings for a 9-2 win. By the time it was over the Cougars would
have scored 9 to back McCaskill who improved to 13-7.

Game #7:

Reuss improved to 12-7 and got help from Robinson and Knudson who
combined on a well pitched 4 hitter to lead Long Beach to a 4-1 win.
Tuefel and Law both drove home a pair for the Titans.

Series Summary

*

Clovis takes 4 while Long Beach adds 3 to the win column.

after the 1st inning. Eric Davis went down for 5 days to a twisted knee,
