·         Valdosta Bombers @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview

Valdosta Bombers (39-38, 4th place NL East) visit the Manhattan Gas Hornets (50-27, 1st place NL East) as we start the hit and go past the half-way point in the season. Quick summaries this week.

Game #1:

Tight pitching duel as Bombers outhit Manhattan, but Gas Hornets out score the Bombers 3-1. LaCoss (L 7-7) scatters 3 hits in 6 innings but gives up 2 runs, 1 ER) in tough defeat. Key goes 6.2 gving up 5 hits and 1 run for the win (6-4). Reardon the save (25). Schofield HR (5) off Farr.

Game #2:

Another low scoring affair as Leary, Smith and Righetti team up for 5 hit 2-0 shutout victory for Manhattan. Leary (12-2) gives up 3 hits and fans 6 in 6 innings, Rags gets his first save pitching 1.2 innings. B.Smith, 8 hits in 6.2 innings, gets the loss (6-7). Jack Clark gets 3 of Valdosta’s 5 hits (in fact, he got a lot of hits in the series).

Game #3:

Biggest outburst of the series sees Bombers turn a 2-0 1st inning deficit into an 8-4 victory. They plated 3 in the 3 and 5 and 2 more in the 6th to win going away. Redus goes 2 for 4 with 4 rbis in the 10 hit attack (plus 3 walks and 2 Manhattan errors). Hough (5-10) the winner, Brenly gets hurt for 1 game. Ballard took the loss (6-2).

Game #4:

Gas Hornets return to the winner’s column with a 4-2 win (again, low hitting contest, 6 for Manhattan, 4 for Valdosta). Yount hits 8th triple and O’Neill cracks a solo HR (3). Reuschel the win (13-6), Reardon the save (26). Sutton (1-2) the loss.

Game #5:

Candiotti tosses a 2 hitter, but one of them was a 2 run double to Yount in the 8th for the games only scoring as Manhattan win 2-0. P.Smith scatters 8 hits (and 4 walks) over 8 innings for the win (5-4), Reardon gets the save (27). Candiotti (8-3) gets the tough loss.

Game #6: Crazy game. Manhattan gets 3 in the 1st and are cruising until Bombers get to McWilliams in the 6th for 3 runs. (LaCoss’s 2 of 3 runs given up in 1st unearned thanks to Dale Svuem – who ends up committing his 2nd error of game later – an another UR Run).
Tie is broken in 7th on that unearned run, Gas Hornets go into the 9th up 4-3. Trying to stretch rest time for Reardon, D.Smith stays on for the 9th after pitching the 8th. All goes well until 2 outs – then he gives up a hit and a walk and Reardon comes in to notch his 28 STRAIGHT save – but wait, he gives up single and a run for a blown save. Tie 4-4 at the end of regulation we go 3 more innings, Valdosta goes with Boever for 9th and 10, and O’Dell Jones for 11the and 12th. In the 12th he gives up 2 hits and a walk and Younts 3 hits of the game ends it 5-4 for Manhattan. Jones the loss (0-1), Burke (1-1) the win. Wallach 3 rbis on bases loaded triple in the 6th. Yount also had 3 rbis.
Game #7: Another extra inning game as Valdosta breaks a scoreless tie scoring 2 runs in the 7th (on NO HITS). Couple walks and errors give the Bombers the lead in another tight pitching contest. Leary the starter goes 8 innings, 4 hits 2 runs (0 ER) but FIVE walks. B.Smith goes 8.2 innings, 4 hits and 2 ER – both in the bottom of the 9th! Yup, PH Mike Stanley singles in two off Franco – Franco game in to pitch to PH O’Neill, Stanley came in to get the R-L platoon and it worked. But in the 10th, Leach and Righetti (2 outs with a runner on 3rd and he couldn’t come through – again) couldn’t get the Bombers through the 10th scoreless. So Valdosta wins the finale 3-2. Franco the BS (2) but the win (4-3). Leach (0-3) the loss.

Series Summary *

Manhattan wins the series 5 games to 2 but it sure didn’t feel like it.

Kevin Mitchell HRd, tripled and drove in 3 runs. Bill Swift (4-4, 5.05) allowed only a run on 4 hits through 8 IP, Ward pitched the 9th to earn a save (5). Dopson (8-4, 3.09) failed to last 5 innnings, took the loss.

Game #3:

The Bears had scored only 1 run over the 1st 24 innings and nothing over the past 17 when the rallied for 5 runs in the 7th to break a 0-0 tie. Bob Walk (1-5, 4.23) had matched Greg Swindell (10-4, 2.84) to that point. Mackey Sasser got it going with a PH single that scored the 1st run, batter after batter came through till 5 Bears crossed the plate.
Final: Cedar Park 5 Mexico City 0

Game #4:

The 3d consecutive shutout in the series. This time by David Cone (11-4, 1.64), Mike Boddicker (6-7, 2.83) over matched in this one, left early to give the BP some work. Cone scattered 7 hits, and was helped by Barry Bonds (15) 2-run HR.

Bobby Witt (6-4, 3.51) threw 7 effective innings and turned the game over to Al Pena (9) to save it. In a balanced attack Cedar Park got 3 in the 1st and tacked on one in the 6th and another in the 8th while the staff kept the Chihuahuas off balance. Danny Darwin (4-2, 2.23) returned to the series and took the loss.
Final: Cedar Park 5 Mexico City 2

Game #7: With the series even Dwight Gooden for Mex, John Dopson for CP. Gooden (5-4, 4.08) gave up 10 hits but went the distance. Dopson left early but Cerutti was charged with the loss when Mex scored on an unearned run. Basically the CP bullpen fell apart but they were the victim of Kelly Gruber, whose base stealing prowess was a well kept secret, till now. Gruber stole 2d, 3d and home to break the tie, and Tony Fernandez also chipped in a SB. Ernie Whitt, usually reliable backstop could keep the Chihuahuas from running wild on the bases. With power galore in their lineup, the SB was their key to victory.
Final: Mexico City 6 Cedar Park 3

Series Summary *

The Bears outhit MC 10-7 in final game but took the loss and lost the series 4-3. Despite all the power hitters in both lineups, there weren’t many home runs, and there were 3 shutouts.
