·         Old Mill Legends @ Stockton Wings – OLD MILL LEGENDS CHANGE NAME AFTER THIS WEEK TO THE TRAVERSE CITY TIGERS

Series Preview

The Old Mill Legends representing the wild A.L. West come to Stockton to play the Wings tied with Cedar Park, with a half-game lead of Detroit; while Stockton finds itself 8 games back of the Chicago Demolition.

Game #1: Old Mill sends Jose Rijo to the mound, sporting a 3-2 record with a 2.45 ERA, to face against dependable veteran Bobby Ojeda. Ojeda actually entered the game with a 2.54 ERA, while his 3-4 record hints that his lineup could give him more support.
The Wings get started early in the bottom of the first with a RBI double from future star Barry Larkin, Chili Davis would eventually score in Larkin on a sac fly to put the lead 2-0 after one.
During the bottom of the second with one out, Robby Thompson got a rally started with a triple, he would score on the Fielder’s Choice from Jeffrey Leonard. Rich Gedman got his first hit of the season (moving Leonard down to 3rd base), John Shelby got his second single of the game (this one an RBI single scoring in Leonard). Barry Larkin once again delivers an RBI single, Shelby would hold at 3rd. The Wings have now jumped to a 5-0 lead. The Legends seen enough of Rijo, who only made it 1 1/3 innings, allowing 6 hits, 7 ER’s while striking out two batters.
Bringing up the A.L. Player of the Week (Week#6) Jose Canseco to face the new reliever, southpaw Dave Leiper. Leiper throws a mistake he would like back as Canseco sends this over rightfielder Joe Carter’s head, a three-run blast for Canseco. The Wings now lead 8-0, in the bottom of the 2nd with still one out. Chili Davis smacks a double to left, moves to 3rd on a wild pitch. The bleeding would end with Mike Pagliarulo striking out, followed by a Willie Upshaw fly-out to left.
Stockton would add two more in the bottom of the 5th, and then a run in each the 7th & 8th. Rich Gedman, who entered the game without a single hit during the season, went 3-for-4, with a double & two RBI in the ninth hole of the lineup. Robby Thompson went 3-for-4, with two doubles, a triple, while scoring three times. Barry Larkin also had three hits as well.
The Legends’ lineup was quiet, only getting 5 hits off of Bobby Ojeda who cruised to a complete-game shutout with four K’s.
FINAL SCORE: Stockton 12, Old Mill 0
Game #2: John Candelaria takes the mound as he looks to get the Legends back on track after their embarrassing series opener at Stockton. The Stockton Wings will be sending Dan Petry to the mound for his season debut.
Top of the 1st, The Legends got things off quickly with a two-run homer by Dave Winfield. Joe Carter would smack a double, and get driven in by a Tim Raines single. Old Mill on top 3-0.
Bottom of the first, Robby Thompson batting in the 2nd slot in this one, hits a solo HR off of the “Candy Man”. Trimming the lead down to 3-1.
After Johnny Ray kept his hitting streak alive with an RBI single in the 2nd, the Legends’ Dave Winfield knocked Petry out of the game with a no-doubter, three-run blast to deep center. Legends are getting some pay back after Game 1, with a 7-1 lead after four innings.
Top of the 5th, Tim Birtsas who relieved Petry, returns to the mound. With one out, he ends up walking Joey Meyer. Rafael Ramirez follows by hitting into a Fielder’s Choice, as the Wings get the lead runner Meyer at 2nd. Mookie Wilson who has been on base twice with bases-on-balls already, got a pitch that he liked and sent it just over the wall, over Leonard’s glove. Two-run homer for Mookie. Barry Larkin would make the first of his two errors by an errand throw pulling off 1B-Willie Upshaw, Johnny Ray is safe on a error. Paul Molitor delivers a single up the middle and keeps the inning alive, with two outs. Stepping up to the plate is Winfield, who sends this one to deep left — Make that a 3 HR day, and another three-run HR, which gives him a 3 HR, 8 RBI day so far, and it’s the fifth inning, with the Legends up 12-1!
Both the Legends & Wings add two runs each in the 6th Inning, making it a 14-3 Legends lead.
Top of the 8th, Mookie Wilson on 2nd (single) and Johnny Ray on 1st (Bases on Balls) — Dave Winfield steps up to the plate once again for his 6th at-bat, this time facing Mark Clear. The pitch — ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! This one is going… going gone! 4 HR’s in a game for Dave Winfield, 11 RBI’s for the day… and what do you know it’s the month of May, maybe Mr. Steinbrenner wasn’t too far off on calling him “Mr.May”.
Barry Larkin would add a three-run HR in the bottom of the ninth for the Wings, but the damage is done. No great pitching in this one, Candelaria pitches 6 innings, allowing 3 runs & 8 hits to qualify for the Legends’ victory.
Molitor & Carter had three hits each for the Legends, while Billy Hatcher had a productive 3-hit, 2 RBI game for the Wings.
FINAL SCORE: Old Mill 17, Stockton 6
Game #3: The Legends hope to break Greg Maddux out of his mysterious 1-4 funk, as he will face off against Mike Dunne of the Stockton Wings; Two youngsters going head-to-head.
Top of the 3rd, the Legends have bases loaded with no outs against the Wings’ Dunne. Mike Dunne would walk Joe Carter, while walking in a run. Tim Raines would follow with a sacrifice fly, scoring in Johnny Ray (who got the inning started with a double). Mike Pagliarulo would air-mail his throw over Upshaw’s head, scoring in Dave Winfield. Stockton would end the mess eventually, but the Legends lead 3-0.
Bottom of the 4th, Chili Davis hits a one-out, solo HR off of Maddux. Jose Canseco would follow with a double, and then score off of Mike Pagliarulo’s single to right. Robby Thompson, with two outs, smacks a double to right-center, to tie up the ballgame at 3-3.
The Wings would take the lead 4-3, with an RBI single by Billy Hatcher in the bottom of the 7th — giving Hatcher five consecutive hits in five consecutive at-bats for the series.
The Wings would go with their closer Tom Niedenfuer to try to shut down the Legends, but everything he threw up there was a hit. Rafael Ramirez got it started with a double, followed by a Ron Hassey single. Runners on 1st & 3rd, Mookie Wilson gets an RBI single. The Wings call on Tim Birtsas, and he couldn’t do any better as he watched RBI singles by both Johnny Ray & Paul Molitor. Tim Raines would eventually add another RBI single (this one off of Mark Eichhorn) before the inning was up. A five-run explosion, making it Niedenfuer’s 2nd blown save of the season.
Juan Agosto would seal down the victory (his 3rd) for the Legends, in a game that Stockton would like back. This game also sported two great defensive throws by both Tim Raines & Joe Carter, throwing out baserunners at home. This one will be known as missed opportunities by the Stockton Wings.
Tom Niedenfuer is now 0-3, with 2 blown saves.
FINAL SCORE: Old Mill 8, Stockton 4
Game #4: Scott Terry of the Legends faces off against Shawn Hillegas of the Wings, as Stockton looks to even up this series.
Mookie Wilson got things started with a lead-off double in the first, Dave Winfield would later smack him in with a single to right.
The game would not see any more runs until the bottom of the 7th, with an RBI double by Willie Upshaw, scoring in Chili Davis.
Top of the 8th, Tim Raines coming in for Jesse Barfield gets things started with a double, the Legends would later take a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice hit by Rafael Ramirez.
Top of the 9th. The Wings push it with Hillegas after 8 strong innings of 2 runs, as he would he get laced by singles from Ray, Molitor, Winfield & Boone. Winfield & Boone would add RBI’s with a Sac hit RBI by Raines. 3 runs in the ninth, that is now 8 runs the last two games in the ninth against Stockton.
Doug Jones would get out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth, as the Legends once again prevail. Winfield goes 2-for-4 with two RBI singles.
FINAL SCORE: Old Mill 5, Stockton 1
Game #5: The Legends’ Bob Knepper enters the game with a 5-2, 1.82 ERA in 8 starts vs. Stockton’s ace Bruce Hurst, who’s having a excellent start of 7-1, 1.97 ERA. The Stockton Wings hope to finish the series the way they started it, with a victory.
John Shelby kicked things off with a solo HR in the bottom of the 2nd, Wings lead 1-0.
Johnny Ray & Paul Molitor struck back in the 3rd with two-run doubles, as the Legends took a 4-1 lead.
Nick Esasky added a solo HR in the top of the fourth for the Legends, while in the bottom of the inning John Shelby of the Wings scored off of a wild pitch, after a triple. Legends 5, Wings 3, after four innings.
The Wings wouldn’t quite recover, and the Legends would add a couple more as Bob Knepper gets his 6th win, while Bruce Hurst has himself a short outing of 3 innings.
John Shelby was a double short of the cycle.
FINAL SCORE: Old Mill 7, Stockton 3
Series Summary * Dave Winfield’s huge Game 2 along with his Game 4 of two additional RBI’s gave him 13 RBI for the 5-game series, but was relatively quiet for Games 1, 3 & 5.
Johnny Ray’s hitting streak for the Legends continues.
Bobby Ojeda was the only bright spot about the Stockton Wings’ pitching staff in this series.
Barry Larkin & Robby Thompson had great starts to the series, while the Stockton Wings had their opportunities to avoid a 4-1 series loss.
