In a well-defensed game, Old Mill takes game three 5-4, winning it in the top of the 9th-a heartbreaker loss for the Juggernauts.

·         Fort Worth Panthers @ Montana Cutthroats

Series Preview

The Fort Worth Panthers visit the Montana Cutthroats for the second series of the year for both teams. Fort Worth comes in at 2-3 on the year. Montana is 1-6 after losing 5 straight. Forth Worth is expected to contend for a playoff spot. Montana not so much.

Game #1: Lefty Allan Anderson for Fort Worth vs. Bob Forsch for Montana. Montana scores first in the bottom of the 2nd as Oddibe McDowell doubles and then scores on Pete Stanicek’s RBI single. Fort Worth takes the lead for good in the 3rd. Carney Lansford doubles and then scores on Gary Sheffield’s RBI single. Then with two outs, Willie McGee drives home two with a clutch single to make it 3-1 Panthers. The Panthers add a single run in the 4th on Lansford’s fielders choice groundout. Then in the 7th, the dam breaks on Montana with a fluke play. With two outs, Fred McGriff hits a fly ball to left center which creates a collision in the outfield. When the dust settles, McGriff has triple and RBI and Monana has two injured outfielders for the rest of the series in Ron Kittle and McDowell. Will be interesting to see if this impacts the series going forward. Fort Worth adds two more runs to pad lead and Anderson is solid on moun d. FINAL – FWP 7 MCT 1
Game #2: Ron Darling for Panthers vs. Joaquin Andujar for Cutthroats. The first 3 innings kind of spoke to the entire game. Both teams made two errors each before an out was recorded in the 4th inning and each team slammed a 3-run HR in the first 3 innings. When the dust had settled, Fort Worth had a 4-3 lead with four unearned runs and Montana’s Gene Larkin and Fort Worth’s Keith Hernandez had 3-run HRs to their credit. The Panthers added solo insurance runs in the 4th on Geno Petralli’s RBI groundout and in the 7th on Carney Lansford’s RBI 2B. Ron Darling settled in nicely after allowing the 3-run HR in the 1st inning to get his second win of the season. FINAL – FWP 6 MCT 3
Game #3: Fernando Valenzuela for Fort Worth vs. Steve Ontiveros for Montana. What an entertaining game this turned out to be! Back and forth throughout as the lead changed six times. After both teams traded single runs over the first three innings on two out RBI doubles by FWP Fred McGriff and MCT Kevin Seitzer, things heated up offensively. Gary Sheffield was clutch for the Panthers with a two out bases loaded single to drive home two and make it 3-1 Fort Worth in 4th. However, Montana quickly tied it in the bottom of the frame on Steve Balboni’s 2-run HR. The Cutthroats then took the lead on Ellis Burks’ RBI single in the 5th. That lead didn’t last long as Pat Tabler, with two outs, gave Fort Worth the lead in the 6th with a 2-run single. But Montana wasn’t done. Kevin Seitzer and Burks got back to back RBI singles to make it 6-5 Cutthroats. The Montana bullpen folded, however, as Milt Thompson and Tabler got 2-out s ingles to tie and take the lead for good. Entertaining game but Cutthroats losing streak reaches 8. FINAL – FWP 7 MCT 6
Game #4: Mario Soto takes hill for Panthers vs. Willie Fraser for Montana. Bad teams find a way to lose and this was really evident in game 4 of the series. All was right in the world for the home team as they held a 5-0 lead behind Darrly Boston’s two HRs and starter Willie Fraser hadn’t given up a hit until the 6th inning. But the world was flipped starting in the top of the 7th, as Geno Petralli delivered a bases loaded clearing double to pull Fort Worth within 5-4. Montana added a run in the bottom of the 7th on a Gene Larkin RBI double to make it 6-4. But the Montana bullpen failed them for a second game in a row. Jim Rice delivered a clutch 2-run PH single to tie the game in the 8th. Fort Worth then took the lead on…you guessed it….an error by pitcher Paul Assenmacher. Fort Worth’s bullpen proved to be worthy and held on for the exciting come from behind win. FINAL – FWP 7 MCT 6

Game #5:

Bill Wegman for Fort Worth vs. Mike Smithson for Montana. Bill Wegman goes the distance and twirls a 4-hit shutout for Fort Worth. After only hitting 1 HR in the first four games of the series, the Panthers built a 3-0 lead on solo HRs from Keith Hernandez and two from Lance Parrish. Willie McGee got a two out RBI single in the 8th inning to finish the scoring. All Wegman and Parrish in this one. FINAL – FWP 4 MCT 0.

Game #6:

Game 1 rematch of Anderson vs. Forsch. Steve Balboni slams a solo HR in the bottom of the 2nd to give Montana a 1-0 lead. And then that was it! Anderson and Forsch are solid the rest of the way. Forsch bests Anderson with a 6-hit shutout. Fort Worth got two singles in the 9th but Forsch pitched around it to hold on. Montana breaks 10 game losing streak with win. FINAL – MCT 1 FWP 0

Game #7:

Ron Darling for Panthers and Joaquin Andujar for Cutthroats. In the series finale, Ron Darling throws Fort Worth’s 3rd straight complete game with a 3-hit shutout of Montana. Fort Worth’s offense came via small ball. They finally broke through against Andujar and his bullpen in the 6th with an RBI groundout by Lance Parrish. In the 7th, they made it 2-0 on a Milt Thompson Sac Fly and then in the 9th, Billy Ripken singled home a run for the 3-0 final. FINAL – FWP 3 MCT 0

Series Summary * Fort Worth takes the series 6 games to 1 over Montana. Panthers starting pitching was the star as they flexed their muscle more as the series wore on. They finished with two shutouts and three complete games over the final three games of the series. They held the Cutthroats to 3 or less runs in every game but two. The crazy stat of the series was that Montana scored 16 runs in games 1-4 and only 1 run in games 5-7. However, they were 0-4 in games 1-4 and 1-2 in games 5-7. Fred McGriff led Fort Worth offensively going 11-30 in the series. Geno Petralli drove in 5 runs in limited duty and Gary Sheffield was 5 for 10 in spot playing time. For Montana, no real offensive standouts. Kevin Seitzer was 8 for 25 and Ellis Burks drove in four with a 7 for 25 series. On the mound, Alan Anderson went 1-1, 16 innings, 12 hits, and only 2 runs for Fort Worth. Ron Darling was equally impressive with 2-0, 16 innings, 8 hits, 3 runs allowed. For Mo ntana, Joaquin Andujar only gave up 2 earned runs in 11 innings, but gave up 19 hits. Next week, Montana stays home to host California while Fort Worth returns to Texas to host Stockton.
