·         Steel City Sluggers @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview

Season opens for the defending MWWL Champion Manhattan Gas Hornets. Home town fans are a buzz – there have been some roster changes, but the nucleus from last year remains – although not as much so in the rotation. That could be a suspect area this year, but right now – they’re the champs and looking to stay that way. Predictions seem to say something else. Indeed, the opening foe Steel City Sluggers are rated high atop the heep in the NL – and looking at their roster – it’s no wonder they are ranked high. Play ball …

Game #1: The Gas Hornets open their defense of the league with a thrilling 9th inning victory. With the score knotted at 1-1 and Gott on the mound for Steel City, Sax leads off the bottom of the bottom of the 9th with a double. Joyner lines out and Dawson is given the IW. With O’Neill the scheduled batter, Hammaker is brought in to pitch and the Gas Hornets counter with newly acquired Kevin Bass. On the 1st pitch, Gas Hornets pull a double steal – but Sax is gunned down at 3rd. 2 outs. Bass then draws a walk to put runners at 1st and 2nd. That brings up the pitcher – and he’s yanked for Mike Stanley. Stanley. With a 2-0 count, he spanks one to the ride side in the hole between 1st and 2nd and Dawson motors his way around to score the winning run! 2-1 Manhattan. WP Righettti (1-0), LP Gott (0-1).
Game #2: Hometown dreams of an undefeated season end in game two as the Sluggers do just that scoring 3 in the 2nd and 4 in the 3rd and finishing their scoring with another in the 4th enroute to a 8-5 victory. Game only looked almost close thanks to a Joyner 3 run sock (1) in the 9th. McReynolds was the big wrecking ball going 2 for 3 with a HR (1) and 4 rbis. Dave Henderson had 3 hits. Anomaly – at the end of 8 innings both teams had 12 hits, but it was 8-2 Steel City (Gas Hornets ended with 15 hits). Belcher (W 1-0) scattered enough to make it seem easy. Reuschel, in his Manhattan debut, was driven out in the 3rd and took the loss (0-1).

Game #3:

Manhattan got out to 1-0 lead in the 1st and Jimmy Key looked like his brilliant self from last year until have gave up a 3 run HR to Sabo (1) in the 7th. It was answered quickly with a single run in the bottom half, but Steel City managed an insurance run on a Henderson rbi double in the 8th. WP Browning (1-0) gave up 2 hits in 6 innings (but 5 walks). Robinson pitched the 9th for the save (1). Key, with the 3 run dinger, took the loss (0-1).

Game #4:

In the 4th game another 2-1 contest erupted this time with Steel City on top. Dennis Martinez (W 1-0) pitched 8 innings of 7 hit ball and faced off with Larry McWilliams who went 7 inning (5 hits, 2 runs) and got the loss (0-1). Sandberg connects for HR #1.

Game #5:

Manhattan comes back to take the series finale winning another close contest. With the score tied 2-2, the Gas Hornets score 2 in the 8th on a 2 run single from Kevin Bass. Good thing they scored 2 because Dave Henderson hit a 1 out HR (1) in the 9th bringing the final score to 4-3. Reardon (1-0) got the win in relief. Saberhagen was still pitching in the 8th and took the loss (0-1). Henderson was 3 for 4 with 2 rbis in the game.

Series Summary *

Steel City takes the series 3-2 and Gas Hornets looked like they might have had too much fun on the champagne circuit.

·         Germantown Grays @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview

Winnipeg was awful last year and a little better this year. But in this match up neither team would be considered a playoff bound team.

Game #1:

Guzman for Germantown and Glavine for Winnipeg both pitched well allowing 2 in 7 innings but handed it over to the pen. Winnipeg won it in the 9th as Stillwell drove in Alomar for the 3-2 Winnipeg win.

Game #2:

Ed Whitson pitched a gem as he throws a 5 hitter and Winnipeg wins 4-0. Buhner hits the first homer of his MWWL career

Game #3:

Germantown’s Mullholland throws a 5 hitter as Germantown beats Moyer 2-0.

Game #4:

Germantown’s Morgan wins 2-1 as he throws a 4 hitter.

Game #5:

Miller homers and Aquilera throws a gem.. Germantown 3 Winnipeg 2

Game #6:

Tom Glavine came up lame with out throwing to a batter Ted Power came in from the pen and went 9 shutout innings as Winnipeg ties the series 3-3

Game #7:

The only game with hitting and Winnipeg did the hitting.
Dave Valle was a monster as he went 4 for 4 with 2 homers a triple and 6 rbis! Calderon also homered. Whitson pitched great and improved to 2-0 in the 13-2 Winnipeg win.

Series Summary *

Winnipeg wins the series 4-3 but it clearly showed neither team had the hitting needed to win many games. Germantown could be in for a night mare year as they simply did hit the poor Winnipeg pitchers, when they face a real team it will be scary.
Pitcher of the Series Whitson 2-0 1.69 era

In the third a home run by catcher Petralli and a singled by left fielder Heep extended Ft. Worth’s lead to 4-0. It looked like the Panther’s were on the their way to winning the opening game of the season when Bears shortstop Thomas came up to the plate with one out in the 9th against Ft. The Bears take the lead in the 6th on a single by RF, Evans and solo home run by C, Fitzgerald – his 1st of the season. With two outs in the home half of the 6th the Panthers got hits from end of their lineup but couldn’t do anything. SP LaPoint gets some help from 2B Ripken in the top of the 7th after DH Armas walked and 3B Schu doubled to begin the inning. “Infield deep … ARMAS off third … the pitch to THOMAS … on the hands and THOMAS flicks it out right … RIPKEN might have a play … racing back for it … he has it! over to NEWMAN … yes! … two for the price of one … and ARMAS gets back safely … the PANTHERS doing their best to keep this game close” LaPoint escapes the inning on a comebacker by LF Moses. Ft. Worth takes the lead in the bottom of the 7th on a fielder’s choice and a single by LF, Rice. However; the Pant her bullpen fails to protect the lead again as Jackson gives up a tying home run to C Fitzgerald. 3B Lansford bails out the Panther’s setup man with a two out 2 run scoring double as Ft. Worth evens the series at two games a piece.

·         Chicago Demolition @ Montana Cutthroats

Series Preview

Opening Night is always excited no matter how good or bad your team is expected to be. This particular Opening Series has all the potential to be an ugly one for the home team. However, since it is Opening Night, Montana fans are excited an optimistic as the Cutthroats host the Chicago Demolition. Montana is predict to be horrible while Chicago is predicted to be the run away team in the division. So without further ado…..lets….PLAY BALL!

Game #1: Opening Night matchup with Dave Stewart for Chicago vs. Willie Fraser for Montana. Dave Stewart opens the season with a gem. Stewart twirls a 3-hit complete game SHO to lead Chicago to the Opening Night 4-0 win over Montana. Chicago scored a single run in the top of the 1st as Wade Boggs tripled with 1 out and scored on a Bill Doran SF. The rest of the scoring was by the solo HR. Kent Hrbek (T2), Eric Davis (T4), and Von Hayes (T8) each went deep for the Demolition. Surprise Opening Night starter Willie Fraser was solid in the loss for Montana against the high powered Chicago offense. Ken Phelps had 3 hits for Chicago. Kevin Seitzer was 2 for 4 for Montana. FINAL – CHI 4 MCT 0
Game #2: Roger Clemens for Chicago vs. Mike Smithson for Montana. Quite a game here as the home crowd gets their monies worth. Montana takes 3-0 lead through six innings behind Mike Smithson’s solid pitching. Offensively, Montana scores in bottom of 2nd on Steve Balboni solo HR and twice in the 6th. Three doubles, two with two outs, by Tommy Herr, Gene Larkin (RBI), and Darryl Boston (RBI) plated two against Clemens in 6th. However, Chicago’s offense awakens late with a solo run in the 7th. With two outs, Wade Boggs singles and scores on Bill Doran’s RBI double. Then in the 9th, it gets crazy. Terry Puhl leads off with PH walk. Gerald Young advances him with H&R single. Boggs flys out with no advance. A passed ball on C Darryl Miller scores Puhl and moves Young to 2nd with tying run. Then Ellis Burks drops a fly ball to allow Young to score. It is the 2nd error of game for the 3 defense Burks. Montana gets out of inn ing and then wins it in bottom of the 9th. Boston gets 3rd hit of game with single and then steals second. PH Ron Kittle moves Boston to 3rd with groundout. After pitch hitter Brian Harper strikes out, PH Ricky Jordan makes his rookie and Montana debut with an RBI bloop single to win it! FINAL – MCT 4 CHI 3
Game #3: Orel Hershiser for Chicago vs. Bob Forsch for Montana. Upset by the loss the previous night, Chicago’s bats put a hurt on Montana starter Bob Forsch early. But not after Montana took a 1-0 lead in the 1st on Ellis Burks RBI double. In 2nd, Chicago took lead for good with a 2-out rally on a Von Hayes RBI double and Ozzie Guillen RBI single. In the 3rd, the Demolition put the game away on Eric Davis’ RBI single and Ken Phelps’ 3-run HR…again all with 2 outs. The game settled down until the 7th when led by Kent Hrbek’s 2-run HR Chicago added three more. They finished off the scoring with another run in the 8th. Hershiser was solid, as expected, with a complete game three hitter. FINAL – CHI 10 MCT 1

Game #4:

Doug Drabek for Chicago vs. Joaquin Andujar for Montana. Drabek throws a 2-hit SHO gem as Chicago uses a 5-run 3rd inning to win 6-0 over Montana. Chicago scored all their runs early with a single unearned run in the 1st plated by Eric Davis’ RBI single and the 5-run 3rd inning. In the 3rd, Chicago got RBI singles from Wade Boggs, Eric Davis, and Kent Hrbek. The other two runs scored on an error and Ken Phelps SF. The story was Drabek, however, as he gets the shutout. Davis had three hits and two RBI for Chicago. FINAL – CHI 6 MCT 0

Game #5: Ron Guidry for Chicago vs. Steve Ontiveros for Montana. In a game that never really felt as close as the final score, Chicago, once again, scored early to take a 6-0 lead at the halfway mark. The Demolition scored in each of the first 5 innings. They took a 2-0 lead in the 1st on RBI doubles by Bill Doran and Kent Hrbek. Some unsexy but productive runs were then scored in innings 2-4 on a Mike Scioscia SF, Ken Phelps RBI groundout, and an unearned run giving Chicago a 5-0 lead. Von Hayes made it 6-0 with an RBI single in the 5th. Montana made it interesting in the bottom of the 5th. Ellis Burks doubled and scored on Kevin Seitzer’s RBI single. Then suddenly, Ron Kittle woke up crowd with a 2-run HR off Guidry to make it 6-3. Chicago got two value insurance runs in the 7th on a Phelps RBI groundout (his second of the game) and another error. Then Kittle rocked Guidry again for his second 2-run HR of the game to make it 8-5. Sei tzer got an RBI triple in the 9th but got thrown out trying to make it home for the final whimper. One interesting note, Chicago went to the bullpen for the first time in the season when Dennis Eckersley came on in the 8th for Guidry.                     FINAL – CHI 8 MCT 6.
Game #6: Dave Stewart for Chicago vs. Willie Fraser for Montana. Montana takes early lead with a run in the bottom of the 2nd. Ellis Burks opened the inning by drawing a walk and later scored on Darryl Miller’s RBI single. Fraser cruised through the Demolition in the first three innings but ran into trouble in the middle frames. Chicago broke through with a 3-run 4th inning thanks to Ozzie Guillen’s 2-out bases loaded clearing double. They then added to the lead with solo runs in the 5th and 6th courtesy of Wade Boggs. Boggs hit a solo HR in the 5th and then singled in an unearned run in the 6th. Montana finished the scoring in the 6th on back to back doubles by Tommy Herr and Kevin Seitzer. The Cutthroats brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th but Don Baylor struck out to end the game.     FINAL – CHI 5 MCT 2
Game #7: Roger Clemens for Chicago vs. Mike Smithson for Montana. The series finale opened with a Wade Boggs solo HR in the 1st to give the Demolition a short lived 1-0 lead. Montana got to Clemens in the bottom of the 1st as Darryl Boston got a bases loaded 2-run single to make it 2-1. It remained that until the top of the 6th. Chicago finally got to Smithson again as Kent Hrbek singled home Eric Davis to tie the game. Then in the 7th, Chicago showed great fundamentals with a sac bunt by Gerald Young and a 2-out RBI single by Boggs to give them a 3-2 lead. Hrbek then hit a solo HR in the 8th to finish the scoring at 4-2 Chicago. Clemens went the distance for the hard fought win. Smithson was a tough luck loser. FINAL – CHI 4 MCT 2

Series Summary *

Chicago flexes muscles with a 6 out of 7 series win in Montana. Not too many surprises here as Chicago only uses 6 pitchers in series. Chicago was led by Dave Stewart on mound (2 GS, 18ip, 11h, 2r, 8k, 2wins, 1.00era) and Kent Hrbek at plate (.464, 3hr, 7rbi). Montana had Kevin Seitzer (.375) and Smithson (2 GS, 2.45era) star in the series. Chicago heads home for their home opener vs. Stockton while Montana stays home to host Fort Worth.
