·         California Quakes @ Montana Cutthroats

Series Preview

American League East battle as the 1st place California Quakes visit the last place Montana Cutthroats….(ok battle is a little bit of a stretch). The Cutthroats return home after a 43 game road trip. This has to be the longest road trip in league history!? The team had been gone so long that management billed game one as a 2nd opening day and re-introduced the team on the baseline prior to the game.

Game #1:

Quakes are powered by a pair of 3-run innings. George Brett and Ozzie Smith collect 2-run singles to lead the offense while Rick Reuschel goes the distance for the win. Steve Balboni hits 2-run HR for Montana’s only sign of life. Final – CAL 6 MCT 2

Game #2:

Lloyd Moseby goes 2 for 3 with a HR and 3 runs scored to lead Quakes to a 5-1 win. Mike Scott starts for Cali but leaves in 4th with injury. Bob McClure and Dan Plesac pick up from there. Ron Kittle hits solo HR for Montana in 6th. Turns out Kittle’s HR is only hit in game for Cutthroats. Kevin Bass drove in 2 with a 2B and 3B to assist Moseby in offense. Final – CAL 5 MCT 1

Game #3:

Montana out hits Quakes 10-5, but Greg Mathews walks 10 and Quakes win where it counts 6-4. Montana actually had a 3-0 lead in this game on 1st inning runs courtesy of Willie Randolph’s RBI single and Kevin Seitzer’s 2-run HR. However, Carlton Fisk hits a 2-run dinger in 2nd and Darryl Evans adds a solo blast in 3rd to tie it. Quakes take lead for good on a pair of RBI FCs by Dale Murphy and Kevin Bass in 6th. Final – CAL 6 MCT 4

Game #4:

All Quakes in 9-1 rout. Darryl Evans and Lloyd Moseby get 3 hits a piece to pace California 15 hit attack. Montana only gets a run and 5 hits against Nolan Ryan and Steve Peters. Final – CAL 9 MCT 1

Game #5:

For only the second time in the entire series, Montana has a lead. This one is 3-1 on Jim Presley’s 2-run HR in the 2nd. However, Quakes dash home team hopes with a 7-run 5th inning. Ozzie Smith paces California with 3 hits. Presley goes 3 for 4 in losing cause. Final – CAL 10 MCT 5

Game #6:

Quakes keep peddle to the metal with another double digit offensive performance. This one has the Quakes scoring 13 times on 18 hits. George Brett goes 3 for 5 with 4 RBI, but is out done by Carlton Fisk’s 4 for 5 with 4 RBI. Quakes club 4 HRs. Ron Kittle goes deep for the losers. Final – CAL 13 MCT 5

Game #7:

Quakes sweep the Cutthroats with a 8-1 win. Game is actually competitive at 1-1 entering the 7th. Then the walls cave in on Montana as George Bell belts 3-run HR and George Brett follows with solo shot in 4-run 7th inning. Kevin Bass goes 4 for 5. Final – CAL 8 MCT 1

Series Summary *

The only thing the home fans can say about their beloved Cutthroats return home after 43 games on the road is that hope they go on road again soon…..Cutthroats stink up the place as the Quakes dominate entire series with 7-0 sweep. Montana’s losing streak goes to 11 games. Quakes stay in first in competitive battle with Chicago in the East. After game 7, Montana Manager Matt Ellis said, “Thank goodness that disaster is over. That was an old fashion butt kickin’!”
