Clovis Cougars @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview

Clovis Cougars (12-23) are coming to the Big Apple to play the Manhattan
Gas Hornets (29-12) for a 5 game series.

Game #1:

Game 1 – 4 hitter for Jimmy Key – but three of them were long balls
including 2 run shot by Howell (4) in the first. Solo homers in 8th
Brantley (6) and 9th Howell again (5) provide the runs for the Cougars
as they win 4-3. Moreland (3) matched the early 2 run homer with one of
his own in the 3, and the Gas Hornets were up 3-2 until the 8th. Smith
(2-3) the win in the relief, for Key it was his first loss (7-1).

Game #2:

Game 2 – 2 out double by Yount in 12th drives in the winning run as Sax
scores from 1st in the Manhattan 3-2 victory. Both teams managed only 7
hits each in this extra inning game. A Murray solo shot (8) in the 2nd
got it going, a Hudson WP with the bases loaded (after 3 walks – his
only walks in the game) in the 5th made it 2-0, but the Gas Hornets
plated 2 in the 7th to tie it setting up the long game. Leach (4-0) won
in relief, Myers (1-4) took the loss. Manhattan emptied their bench, the
Cougars still had 2 players in reserve. Series now even at 1 game each.

Game #3:

Game 3 – A 5 run 2nd and 4 run 5th pace Manhattan to an easy 11-2 win
behind Zane Smith’s 6 hit, 8 inning outing (fanned 8). Smith is now 5-1.
5 errors by the Cougars did not help their cause including 2 by Stanicek
and 2 by Hamilton. Yount (4) went deep for 3 runs, Stanley went 3 for 5
with 4 rbis. Lamp (0-3) took the loss.

Game #4:

Game 4 – Down 4-2 going into the bottom of the 9th, the Gas Hornets
stage a rally as they get a PH single from Moreland, a hit batsmen to PH
William, a walk to Yount, a 2 run single to Sax and an infield hit by
Joyner for a total of 3 runs and the win. Acker (2-1 and BS 1) could not
get an out in the 9th. Spoiled the great starter by Mahler, 6.1 innings,
5 hits, 2 runs and 6 Ks – and the 2 hit, 2 rbi work from Scott Bradley
and the HR from Lindeman (1). Dawson got off the schnide fro Manhattan
with a 2 run jack in the 6th (14) and Righetti (5-1) gets the win in
relief.

Game #5:

Game 5 – 9th inning SF by Sax win the game 3-2 for Manhattan as again a
tight game and a final at bat win spoils a good start by Sutcliffe (6 ip,
3 hits, 2 runs, 7Ks and 1 for 2 with rbi). Howell had 2 hits for Clovis
including a triple. Clutch relief work by Reed (4 innings of no-hit
pitching) and Reardon (W 2-1), 2 innings of no-hit pitching kept the Gas
Hornets in the game. Jacoby (15) tied the game in the 4th with a 2 run
HR. But the Griffin 1 out triple in the 9th, a walk to Williams set up
Sax for the flyout SF to end the game. Lee Smith (2-4) took the loss.

Series Summary

*

Manhattan (33-13) ends up taking the series 4-1, but it certainly was
not easy matter. Clovis was in 4 of the game, had the lead going into
the 9th in 2 of the losses and a 3rd loss the game was tied after 9.
Including their win, 4 of the 5 games were 1 run affairs. The one
blowout featured (if you want to call it that) 5 Cougar errors!
Manhattan moves on to Steel City for its next series, Clovis (13-37)
will host Germantown.

East Pointe Marlins @ Fort Worth Panthers

Game #1:

Two home runs by Deer was all the offense SP Welch needed for the
Marlins as East Point takes game 1. Heath helped Ft. Worth avoid the
shutout by hitting a solo homer in the 9th. Final score EPM 3, FWP 1

Game #2:

Crooked numbers put up by all Panther pitchers except for LaPoint and 22
hits lead to a big mashing by East Point. Trammell had 4 hits and 5 RBI
and Bonilla drove home 4 as well. For Trammell the 4 hits brought his
average to .398. Final score EPM 19, FWP 5

Game #3:

Valenzuela cools the East Coast hitters by pitching a complete game 4
hitter. The Panthers could only manage 1 run, but that’s all they
needed. Final score FWP 1, EPM 0

Game #4:

Darling and McDowell combine on another well pitched game as Ft. Worth
evens the series at 2 games a piece. Final score FWP 3, EPM 1

Game #5:

The offense returns for both teams in the finale. The Panthers had more
hits than the Marlins, but East Point out slugged Ft. Worth with 9 extra
base hits compared to 4. Deer hit 2 homers for the Marlins. Final score
EPM 10, FWP 8

Series Summary

*

East Point takes the series 3 games to two. Deer was the offensive star
going 9 for 21 with 5 home runs and 1 triple for the Marlins.

Madlock to cut the lead to one. Steve Trout (1-2, 7.32) started for the
Wings and he settled down until the 6th when the Bears rallied for two
more handing Boddicker a 6-3 lead going into the 9th. Boddicker allowed
the 1st two batters to reach before the Bears went to their bullpen and
gave the ball to Chuck Crim. He faced Bill Madlock (.364), who promptly
HRd to tie the game. The Wings rallied for a run in the 11th to come

Cedar Park, who managed a bunch of hits (8) but had little to show for
it on the scoreboard.

Stockton 12 Cedar Park 1

Series Summary

*

Stockton takes the series, 3 games to 2. Bill Madlock had a good series
for the Wings, Cerutti’s 8 innings of shutout ball was the best
