Mexico City Chihuahuas @ Fort Worth Panthers

Series Summary

*

Mexico City destroys Ft. Worth’s pitching winning the series 4 games to
one. Tewksbury won the lone game for the Panthers for his first win of
the year, although the bullpen nearly blew it for him. Except for game 4
where Doc Gooden shut them out the Panther offense nearly kept pace with
the Chihuahuas. Albeit most of the the Panther power came in garbage
time. Surprisingly Ft. Worth catcher, Parrish (29 games and 96 AB) has
yet to homer this year. Total runs for the series looked liked an old
fashion NFL game between Dan Fouts and the Chargers vs Dan Marino and
the Dolphins as Mexico outscored Ft. Worth 48 to 28.

Steel City Sluggers @ Clovis Cougars

Series Preview

It was near midnight when moving vans pulled out of Hollywood for the
move up over the Grapevine to Clovis. Expectations were running high for
the first home series for the newly renamed Clovis Cougars who would be
facing division rival Steel City.

Game #1:

Steel City 6 Clovis 3; W-Gross (4-1), S-Robinson (4) L-Mahler (0-1)

The fever pitch of excitement was dashed almost immediately after three
straight base knocks to open the inaugural game at Clovis Park, the
Cougars new home field, put the home team in a quick hole. Rick Mahler
wiggled out of the inning without any further damage to keep it
reasonable. In the bottom of the first Rickey Henderson stepped up and,
“Here’s the pitch from Gross, fastball, swung on and drilled, deep to
center field, it might have enough, and GONE! That ball would not die,
and Henderson hits the first pitch to a Clovis Cougar over the center
field wall.”

But, that would be about it for Clovis highlights, the rest of the
afternoon belonged to Pete O’Brien who blasted two homers for 4 RBI to
back Gross who tossed seven solid innings for the win. Schmidt chipped
in with a homer as well, his seventh of the season. Robinson finished up
with a pair of strong innings for the save.

Afterwards reporters asked Henderson about his blast to which he
retorted, “Just Rickey being Rickey, man.”

Game #2:

SCS 4 CLC 0; W-Saberhagen (6-1), L-Sutcliffe (2-7)

Brett Saberhagen constantly pitched out of trouble and ended up tossing
an 8 hit shutout to lead Steel City over Clovis. Sandberg led the
Sluggers offense with three hits, one run and an RBI. Gibson, Gagne, and
Carter also chipped in RBIs for the Sluggers. Sutcliffe picked up the
loss despite a workmanlike performance.

Game #3:

SCS 4 CLC 3; W-Tekulve (2-1), S-Robinson (5) L-Smith (1-3)

Steel City capped a three run ninth inning rally when Clovis couldn’t
throw out Pete O’Brien from a drawn in infield off the ground ball hit
by Gary Carter. It would turn out to be the winning run off of Lee Smith
to beat Clovis by a 4-3 score today. Starters Dave Martinez and Bud
Black both pitched well, but neither figured in the decision as this one
ended up in the hands of both bullpens. Sandberg and Schmidt doubled to
start the ninth and chase Black who made way for Smith. A walk to
O’Brien and a pich double by Magadan to drive in the tying run and set
up things for Carter. He hit a slow roller to Stanicek who opted for the
easy out rather than chance the play at the plate.

Game #4:

SCS 6 CLC 4; W-Hammaker (2-3) S-Robinson (6) L-Harris (1-5)

Steel City jumped out to a 6-0 lead off of struggling Greg Harris and
never looked back. Schmidt slammed his 8th homer of the year to plate 3
in the first. He would end up with 4 RBI to go along with his 2 hits,
Gibson chipped in with three hits and Baines helped the Sluggers with a
pair of hits as well. The only bright spot for Clovis was Eddie Murray’s
three run homer in the fifth of Hammaker to at least make it close.

Game #5:

SCS 6 CLC 3; W-R. Robinson (4-3) S-D. Robinson (7), L-Lamp (0-2).

In what was becoming a distressing pattern Steel City jumped out to a
6-0 lead for the second day in a row leaving Clovis in the dust. The
first five batters in the Sluggers line-up all knocked in one run with
Sandberg leading the charge with three hits to go along with the RBIs.

Game #6:

CLC 3 SCS 2; W-Myers (1-3), L-Wilkinson (1-2).

Jack Howell drove a pitch up the middle with the bases loaded in the
bottom of the ninth to give Clovis their first win in dramatic, walk-off
style. Eddie Murray had tied it in the bottom of the eighth with his 7th
homer of the year of Kevin Gross. Despite only three hits the Sluggers
had plenty of opportunity as they drew an astounding 10 walks from
Cougar pitchers. Mahler started for Clovis and kept the Cougars in the
game despite 6 base on balls before giving way to Myers who tossed the
last two innings walking 4 more.

Game #7:

SCS 7 CLC 1; W-Saberhagen (7-1), L-Sutcliffe (2-8)

Never any doubt about this one as Saberhagen slammed the door shut with
a brilliant 2 hitter. Schmidt provided all the offense the Sluggers
would need with a two run homer in the first, his 9th of the season. He
added a couple more hits to lead the Sluggers offense.

Series Summary

*

Steel City beat on Clovis like a cheap drum for the convincing 6-1
series win. Next week Clovis fans will be looking for a little more than
just “Rickey being Rickey”.
