·     Germantown Grays @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview Germantown Grays come to the big Apple to face the Manhattan Gas Hornets with each team sporting 17-9 records (Germantown 3 games back of Long Beach in the NLW while Manhattan is sitting atop the NLE). Germantown leads the NL in batting at a .280 clip and 5.6 runs per game while ranking 3rd in pitching with 2.98 team ERA!! Manhattan is 6th in both of those categories.
Leading the Grays offense is Mark McGwire (obtained in the offseason from the Gas Hornets) with a .359 avg and 10 long balls in 24 games (and 29 rbis and 20 runs)! And they have 8 batters over .300 who have appeared in more than half their games. Guzman (5-0) and Flanagan (4-0) pace the starters.
Manhattan sports a 10 HR guy himself, obtained in the off season from Germantown, in Andre Dawson who is hitting .324, 29 rbis and 22 runs. 5 Gas Hornets are over .300 among those who have appeared in 50% or more of their games. Key (4-0) and Zane Smith (3-0) pace the starters.
Game #1:

Guzman (5-0) vs Key (4-0) After 3 1/2 innings of mostly Ks and Ws – Jody Davis sends one over the left field wall (2) for 1-0 Manhattan lead. McGwire ties it up in the 6th, but only because Reynolds makes a throwing error. Bottom half, Joyner (7) unties it with lead-off home run down the line past the pole. Dawson (11) follows to make it 3-0. After a Moreland single, Guzman gets lifted for Dedmon still in the 6th. Hadn’t mentioned anything yet, but with 2 out in the 7th Bailey scratches out an infield hit to break up a no-hit bid by Key. Key is lifted in the 8th and with the tying run on 1st and 2 outs for the Grays in the 9th, Buice fans PH Martinez for his 5th save and a 3-1 Manhattan victory. Key gets the win (5-0), Guzman (5-1) the loss. Germantown managed only 2 hits in the game (and their run come on no hits).

Game #2: Aguilera (0-1) vs Clancy (3-2)
A Brower triple followed by a Ray single gets the Grays on the board 1-0 in the 2nd. McGwire (11) popped a big one in the 4th to make to 2-0 Germantown. The Gas Hornets stay in the game by holding the Grays to no runs in the 5th and 6th despite them getting runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out in each inning. Jacoby pulls Manhattan within 1 with a solo shot in the 7th (9). In the 8th Romero singles, PR Reynolds tossed out at second stealing. Sax follows with single and Yount doubles him home to tie the game. Lefferts came in to pitch after the Romero single. Joyner follows Yount’s double with one of his own to give Gas Hornets the 3-2 lead and Dedmon is brought on. Dawson grounds Joyner to 3rd and Dedmon gives Jacoby IW to face Davis (hitting .302) – good move, Davis fans. Buice comes in for the 9th and gives up a 1 out single, but ends the game getting PH Leach to hit a comebacker. Buice racks up save (6). Manhattan comes back for 3-2 win. Reed (1-0) gets win in reli ef, Lefferts gets BS 1 and the loss (0-1).
Game #3: Flanagan (4-0) vs Leach (1-0)
Jacoby leads off the bottom of the 4th with a solo shot (10) for a 1-0 Manhattan lead. Jody Davis (3) does the back to back thing to make it 2-0. After 2 2 out walks load the bases in the bottom of the 5th, Williams singles to make it 3-0, the Grays cut down the potential 4th run at the plate. 2 out Yount double in the 6th makes it 4-0 Manhattan. The bottom of the 8th was a nightmare for Germantown. It started with Dan Gladden hitting a PH double and then he got an rbi single later in the same inning as the Gas Hornets plate 6 runs for a 10-0 lead. That’s how it ends with Leach (2-0) and 3 other pitchers combing for the 2 hit shutout. Flanagan suffers his first loss (4-1).
Game #4: Morgan (3-2) vs Alexander (1-2)
McGwire comes off a day of rest to hit #12, a 2 run shot, in the 1st for a quick Germantown 2-0 lead. He gets 2 more rbis with a 2 run double in the 3rd for 4-0 lead. Foley adds an rbi single, Grays up 5-0 going to the bottom of the 3rd. Dawson cracks #2 in the 4th after Joyner reached on fielding error, 5-2 Germantown. A Sax triple and Yount 6-3 groundout, the Gas Hornets cut the lead to 5-3 in the 5th. Joyner then singles and Dawson mashes #14 to tie the game (Dawson and McGwire each have 4 rbis so far the game). Sheridan’s 4th hit in the game is an rbi single that scored Daulton from 2nd (not sure how he got that far that fast, but when the dust cleared the ump was waving safe!), 6-5 Grays. Top 7, leadoff triple by Martinez and an IW to McGwire sets up an rbi infield single by Foley for a 7-5 Germantown lead. Dawson drives in 1 with single in 7th to cut it to 7-6 but Ray makes a stellar play on a Jacoby soft pop over his head, then tosses it back quickly to 2nd to do uble up Dawson to end the inning. Lefferts in to pitch the 8th and Felder leads off with triple and scores on Grifin SF to the wall, tie game. 9th inning both McGwire and Dawson fail to reach base, games goes into extra innings. With Ray on 3rd and Cruz on 2nd and 1 out, the infield is brought in. Jeltz hits one hard to Griffin, he scoops it and goes home – bad throw – and Ray is safe (E6), Cruz goes to 3rd, but Jeltz tries to get to 2nd and is cut down for out #2, but Germantown take an 8-7 lead in the 10th. Miller adds insurance with an rbi single, 9-7. Lefferts bats for himself and stays in to pitch the 10th. Leadoff single by Reynolds, groundout and Griffin single put runners on the corners, 1 out, for Manhattan in bottom of the 10th. Williams PH single plates 1, 9-8 Grays. Davis pops out, infield fly rule, Sax the Gas Hornet’s last hope and Lefferts fans him to nail down the Germantown win, 9-8 in 10 innings. Lefferts got BS #2 (both in this series) but manages to get the win (1-1). Buice took the loss (1-1) on the unearned runs in the 10th.
Game #5: Reuss (2-2) vs Key (5-0)
A Yount single with 2b error on Brower sets up Joyner SF in the 1st, 1-0 Manhattan. Jacoby, keeping up the big boys, leads off the 2nd with his 11th HR, 2-0. Once again, Davis follows (4) for their 2nd back to back HRs in this series (and 3rd time for Manhattan), 3-0. Davis hit another HR (5), a 2 run shot inthe 4th, 5-0. Manhattan adds a couple more in the 5th, 7-0. 2 error in 8th lead to a run for Germantown (on no hits) and yes, Key has a no-hitter going through 8 (and again, Manhattan has scored on him in spite of no hits). McGwire 1 out double in the 9th breaks up Key’s bid for the no-hitter (got closer this time). He leaves after 8.1 with 9 Ks and 1 hit. Wegman comes in and DeCinces takes him over the wall (6) for 2 runs, 8-3 Manhattan. More excitement ensues as Zane Smith gets the 2nd out, but then a series of singles score 2 more runs to make it 8-4, the last single by Miller off Hudson brings the tying run to the plate. Ray goes deep to left, deep, but not deep enough as Gladden hauls it in for the final out, Manhattan 8-4 winners. Key the winner (6-0), Reuss the loss (2-3) and Hudson the save (1).

Series Summary *

Manhattan takes the series 4-1. McGwire (2 homers – 12) and Dawson (3 homers – 13) deliver on their excitement. Key comes close to 2 no-hitters, but gets none, but does get 2 win to go to 6-0. Jacoby runs his HR total to 11 and Jody Davis, back from an injury plagued previous series hit .411 in the series (7 for 17) with 4 HRs and 6 rbis.
Manhattan stays home to host Winnipeg next series while Germantown returns home to face Valdosta.

For Detroit on the league leader boards they’re number two in batting at .282 and on top in on base percentage. The Stars come into this series in 1st place 1.5 games in front of Mexico City. For Detroit Butler enters the series on a 12 game hitting streak. He was 5th in batting average at .337, 10th in slugging, second in on base-percentage, and tied for second in walks with 20. Also for the Stars Kruk was 8th in hitting at .338, 4th in on base-percentage, and 4th in runs batted in with 23, and tied for second in walks with 20. Finally the last hot player for Detroit Bell was 6th in batting at .337, 6th in slugging, 4th in hits with 35, and 2nd best in ru ns batted in with 26
Game #1: In the top of the first Kruk hit a solo home run (3), but the Panther’s tied it in the bottom of the first when Beniquez doubled home a run. In the second a single by Whitaker and a double by Franco plated the Stars 3 runs and after two innings Detroit led 4 to 1. In the 4th after the first two hitters had reached on singles Darling drilled Whitaker in the ribs to load the bases and send Sweet Lou to the bench for a few days. Franco follows with another single driving home two, but Tabor was thrown out at third. Franco then gets thrown out at third on a Butler single. The Stars would get one more run in the inning on an error by Hernandez. Ft. Worth would get 3 runs to make it close, but three more runs by Detroit including a two run home run by Butler assured the victory. Danny Jackson has a complete game 6-hitter for his 1st complete game of the season for the Stars. For the Panther’s their losing streak reaches 4 games. FINAL SC ORE: STARS 10, PANTHERS 4
Game #2: Lots of scoring early, Butler leads off the game for Detroit with a single to continue his hitting streak at 14 games. Coleman follows with a triple drive him home and then Coleman scores on a single by Bell. Panther starter, LaPoint appeared to settle down after that. In the bottom of the first 5 of the first 6 hitters reached and Ft. Worth scored 3 runs to lead after the first 3 to 2. In the bottom of the 2nd Heath gets a second straight double to drive in a run and then later scores on a Lansford single. After that the Stars bullpen and Ft Worth’s LaPoint kept each other in check as the Panthers take game two. FINAL SCORE: PANTHERS 6, STARS 3

Game #3:

It was all Detroit in game 3. Powered by Tabor who drove in 3 and home runs by Parrish and Kennedy and a pitching gem by Bielecki the Stars won easily. Bielecki had a complete game 4 hitter with 4 strikeouts. Two of the hits for Ft Worth were by Heath. FINAL SCORE: STARS 7, PANTHERS 0

Game #5: Best game of the series. In the top of the first Parrish drove home two with a single although the Stars could have had more as they had the bases loaded with no outs. Sandwiched around Parrish’s single were two big strikeouts for Panther starter Valenzuela. The Panthers weren’t able to score in the bottom of the first even though Thompson led off with a double. Ft. Worth takes the lead scoring two runs on bases loaded double play balls in the 3rd and 5th innings and also getting a bases loaded walk in the 5th inning. The Panthers extend their lead to 5 to 2 in the 6th inning on back to back doubles and a sac fly. After Detroit got a run in the 7th the Panthers elected to walk Rice who was hitting .291 so that Valenzuela would be able to face lefty Lou Whitaker, who was hitting only .204 and slugging a nominal .327. The move backfired. “The runners take their lead … VALENZUELA comes home … a blast to right … way back i t’s long gone! … a grand slam for WHITAKER! … Lou is clapping his hands he’s one happy ballplayer … WHITAKER will circle the bases … and he’s sure taking his time VALENZUELA grabs the rosin bag … and flings it to the ground in disgust and VALENZUELA is a lonely man out there … STARS 7, PANTHERS 5” It looked like that might be the game winner until the bottom of 9th. After the Panthers got a run on a sac fly McGee came to plate with two outs and a man on, “He delivers … this one is hit … it may carry … it’s way back … say good-bye … it’s all over! … a two-run dinger … Willie trots around the bases … he claps his hands … and there’s a party at home!” FINAL SCORE: PANTHERS 8, STARS 7
