Hurst is a tough-luck loser as he pitched better than his final line indicates. Carlton was tough for Fort Worth. Thompson with 3 hits for FWP, Smalley added 2 hits, and Smalley had 2 RBI.

HR: Canseco, R. Thompson, Knight, Beniquez
It was all Stockton, early and often. Upshaw started it off with a bases loaded 2B, and then Stockton broke out the long ball with solo HRs in the 5th and 6th. Ojeda goes all the way for the win.

Valenzuela pitched well but was betrayed by his defense, as the winning run scored on an E6 FC. Knight adds insurance with an RBI 1B in the 7th. Trout was magnificent, scattering 6 hits in a complete game shutout.

HR: C. Martinez, Coles
Coles is the big hitter for Stockton with an RBI 2B and a solo HR, Martinez added a 2-run shot. Dunne continues his fine start. K. Hernandez has both RBI for Fort Worth.

Fort Worth uses the long ball to take this one, with Petralli adding and RBI double to his 2-R HR.

HR: Smalley
Carlton and Hurst hook up in another battle. Stockton had their chances but couldn’t cash in. Smalley’s solo HR is the difference.
Series Summary * Stockton takes the hard-fought series 4 games to 3. McDowell saves all three of Fort Worth’s wins. there were 13 home runs in the series and two complete games.

 

Cedar Park Bears @ Chicago Demolition

Series Preview Cedar Park heads into the Windy City for a five game set.
Game #1: Greg Swindell goes the distance for the Bears, but comes up a run short. Chicago wins it 3-2.
Game #2: Injuries to Wil Clark (2 Days) and Ernie Whitt (5 Days) cost the Bears dearly in this one. Roger Clemens improved to 3-2 (3.89 ERA). Kent Hrbek has a 2-run HR for the Demolition. Final Score Chicago 5 – Cedar Park 2.
Game #3: Dave Stewart (2-1 3.97 ERA) goes seven solid and Chicago has on their hitting shoes. Eric David is 3 for 5 with 2 SB & 3-runs scored. Final Score Chicago 7 – Cedar Park 1.
Game #4: A Von Hayes 3-run Home Run in the 6th put Chicago ahead for good. Eckersley gets his 7th save for Chicago. Final Score – Chicago 5 – Cedar Park 3.
Game #5: A 2 run 7th, broke a 3-3 tie and put the Demolition in the lead. Six Chicago relievers combined to not allow anything from the Bears. Eckersley gets his 8th save. Final Score – Chicago 5 – Cedar Park 3.
Series Summary * Chicago starters were not the difference in this one, but the bullpen was. Chicago Sweeps the Cedar Park Bears 5 games to 0.

Steel City Sluggers @ Michigan Marauders

Series Preview It’s the home owner for Michigan in this clash. Steel City comes in with a 5-7 mark and Michigan is 8-6.
Game #1: Atlee Hammaker takes the hill for Steel City and Teddy Higuera goes to battle for Michigan. In the bottom of the first, Tom Brunansky starts the scoring with a 2 run blast – its his 7th homer of the year. The Sluggers respond with 2 runs of their own in the second. In the 3rd, Ryno hits a homer for Steel City, and the Sluggers take the lead.In the bottom of the 6th, Brunansky shakes up the Sluggers with a GRAND SLAM. Steel City scores another in the 7th. But, Mitch Webster responds with a Michigan tater. Its 8-4, Michigan. In the 8th, Steel City adds another run.

Steel City cruises to the victory and wins 7-2.

1st inning – Samuel (18) is gunned out by Baines (28) on a sac fly attempt. In the 2nd, Steel City’s McReynolds crushes a 2 run homer.
In the 3rd inning, Baines hits a homer to make it 3-0, Sluggers. In the 4th, Schmidt hits a homer for Steel City. The homers keep coming. Michigan finally gets a run in the 5th and the Sluggers lead 4-1.
There are no more scores and Steel City wins the game and goes ahead in the series.

In the top of the 8th, McReynolds continues his explosion with a 2 run homer to put the Sluggers in the lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Brunansky ties the game with a homer. But, Sandberg breaks the tie with a homer in the 4th.

Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Long Beach Titans

Series Preview An early season series between division foes.
Game #1: Winnipeg led 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th when Guerrero singled in James who led off with a 3B. It stayed 2-2 until the 12th when Mulliniks hit a 3 run walk off HR to give Long Beach a 5-2 win. The Titan bullpen pitched 6 shutout innings in the win.
Game #2: Long Beach took a 4-0 lead in the 2nd behind a Fletcher 3 run HR and held on for a 5-3 win. Winnipeg had the go ahead run at the plate when Hulett flew out to end the game.
Game #3: Winnipeg wins a high scoring game 11-8. They built a 7-2 lead in the 3rd and every time Long Beach got close, they rallied to keep the lead. Murphy, Incaviglia, Valle and Riles led the Goldeyes offense with 3 hits each.
Game #4: This game was the opposite of the previous one as Winnipeg won 2-1. Moyer pitched into the 9th to get the win. Incaviglia and Calderon drove in the runs and Moyer did the rest.
Game #5: Winnipeg had a 4-2 until the 8th when Chris James hit a 2 run HR to tie the game. In the bottom of the 9th Fletcher led off with a 2B. Trillo followed with a PH 1B driving in the winning run in the 5-4 win.
Game #6: The game was tied 1-1 when Perry singled in Devereaux in the 8th to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead. Long Beach tied it in the bottom of the inning when Guerrero led off with a HR. In the 9th Fletcher singled in the winning run in the 3-2 Titans win.
Game #7: Long Beach jumped on Power early and knocked him out after the 2nd with a 5-1 lead and coasted to a 12-2 win. Fletcher and Mulliniks hit 4 hits each. Lynn and Mattingly each had 3 RBI.
Series Summary * In a back and forth series, Long Beach won the first 2, Winnipeg the next 2 and Long Beach the last 3 to take the series 5-2.

 

Hollywood Vampires @ Germantown Grays

Series Preview Germantown wins game seven to take the back and forth series with Hollywood.
Game #1: Pena (.209) went 2-5 with 3RBI and a triple as McCaskill (2-1) allowed only 2 over 8IP as the Vampires cruise past the Grays 7-3.
Game #2: Grays’s McGwire (.288) pounded out 10 total bases and 7 RBI with 2 homers and a double and Leach (.476) and Martinez (.362) each score 3 on 2 and 3 hits respectively to trounced the Vampires 8-1. Guzman (4-0) went 8IP allowing 1 run while scattering 7 hits and 2 walks.
Game #3: The Vampires came right back in game 3 to hand a lopsided loss to the Grays on a Black (1-1) 6 inning 1 run effort. Brantley lead the offense with 2-5 3BRI and a triple and homer. Murray banged out 3 hits as well and Henderson 3 stolen bases. Grays could not muster any offense despite 5 hits from the leadoff pair, Ray and Brower.Vampires 7-1
Game #4: The pendulum swung again as the Grays drained the Vampires 10-1 in game 4 on 14 hits. Martinez (403) went 4-4 with 2 doubles and a homer for 9 total bases, but Cruz (.311) stole the fireworks; with; 4RBIs. Reuss (2-1) went the distance allowing 7 hits and 2 walks.
Game #5: You guessed it: The Vampires won game 5, but it took 14 innings, 7-6. Vampire’s Howell (.258) missed the cycle by not hitting a single and collected 3RBI along the way. Vampire’s S. Stanicek (.290) banged out 4 hits and scored twice. Excellent relief by Acker (1-0), allowing 0 runs over 5IP was the clincher. Cruz (.314) banged out a double and homer with 2 runs for the Grays.
Game #6: No change in this forecast as the Grays bomb the Vampires in game 6, 10-2. The Grays received RBI piece from Sheridan (.231), Ray (.337) and Cruz (.327) and Oil Can (2-0) went the distance spreading out 10 hits and 2 walks.
Game #7: The twist came in game 7 as Sutcliffe (2-3) and Guzman (5-0) locked horns in a pitcher’s dual. Sutcliffe blinked once in the 5th and McGwire (.320) took advantage. Grays 2-0. 5 hits total in the game.
Series Summary * McGwire was big (and getting bigger by the day) with 12 RBI in the series, but the Grays’ Guzman stole the show going 2-0 over 17IP allowing 1 run and piling up 13 strikeouts.; Grays 4 Vampires 3

 

Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Valdosta Bombers

Series Preview Manhattan visits Valdosta in a battle of early season contenders.
Game #1: MGS 3-2. Wally Joyner’s 8th inning RBI 1B off of John Franco made a winner of Jimmy Key (2-0).
Game #2: VAL 3-1. Charlie Hough was tough as he evened his record at 2-2. Bombers had a scare as closer John Franco left with an injury. Turned out to only be a blister as the fans were glad to discover.
Game #3: VAL 7-1. Tim Wallach hit 3 2B’s, knocked in 3 and Mike LaCoss went 8 strong IP to earn his his 1st win of the year.
Game #4: MGH 4-2. Andre Dawson hit a 2-Run HR off of Steve Farr to make a winner of Jim Clancy (2-2).
Game #5: MGH 9-3. Tom Candiotti lasted just 1 IP as the Hornets cruise. Hornets smacked 4 HR’s including a grand slam by Jody Davis. Zane Smith (3-0) picked up the easy win.
Game #6: MGH 7-1. Jimmy Key improved to 3-0 with a solid 8 IP.
Game #7: VAL 14-5. Charlie Hough was not real effective but it didn’t matter as the Bombers strike for 14 runs on 15 hits.
Series Summary * The Gas Hornets take 4 of 7 in Valdosta to take over 1st place in the NL East.

 

Washington Past Timers @ Montana Cutthroats

Series Preview The 6-6 Washington Past Timers visit the 6-8 Montana Cutthroats for a seven game series. Montana is completing an opening season 21-game homestand with this series.
Game #1: Washington breaks a scoreless tie in the top of the 5th inning as Dale Murphy clubs a solo HR. Murphy’s blast is the 1st hit of the game against Montana starter Mike Krukow. George Brett then added another solo HR in the 7th to make it 2-0 Past Timers. A Kevin Bass RBI single in the 8th completed the scoring as Washington pitched a 3-hit shutout. Floyd Bannister, Scott Garrelts, and Dave Smith combined on the shutout. Final Score – WAS 3 MCT 0
Game #2: Washington jumps out to a 4-0 lead and then hangs on for a 4-3 win. George Brett opened the scoring with a RBI triple in the 3rd to make it 1-0. Dale Murphy then increased the Past Timer’s lead to 3-0 with a 2-run HR in the 5th. Washington added another in the inning to make it 4-0. Montana didn’t roll over, however, as they scored once in the 5th and twice in the 7th to get it close. But, Washington’s Dan Plesac and Dave Smith closed the door on the Cutthroats comeback hopes. Final Score – WAS 4 MCT 3
Game #3: Washington jumps to a 5-0 lead with a big 2nd inning. Buddy Bell’s 3-run HR and Ozzie Smith’s 2-run double key the 5 run frame. Montana came right back in the 4th with a 3-run inning of their own. Carmen Castillo got a RBI single and Jim Presley plated two with a double. Darryl Strawberry then doubled home another in the 5th to pull the Cutthroats to within 4-3. The Past Timers added to their lead in an exciting way in the 7th. Ozzie Smith stole 2nd, 3rd, and then home to make it 6-4. Carlton Fisk doubled home another in the 8th for what turned out to be a significant insurance run. Montana got single runs in the 8th and 9th on RBI doubles by Gene Larkin and Darryl Strawberry, but Strawberry was left on base to end the game. Final Score – WAS 7 MCT 6
Game #4: Montana got their first lead of the series as Darryl Strawberry doubled home a run in the 1st. The lead was short lived as Washington got two in the 2nd on back-to-back RBI doubles by Carlton Fisk and Tommy Herr and three more in the 3rd keyed by Kevin Bass’ 2-run single. Montana then tied it at 5-5 with a Strawberry 2-run HR and Joey Cora RBI 2B in the bottom of the 3rd. The Past Timers then re-took the lead for good on George Brett’s 2-run HR in the 4th. Montana failed to score again after the 3rd. Final Score – WAS 9 MCT 5
Game #5: Down 4-0 on Kevin Bass’ 2-run double and RBI singles from Dale Murphy and George Brett, Montana storms back with a 3-run 5th and 4-run 7th to win 7-5 over Washington. 2-run HRs from Jim Presley and Darryl Strawberry tied it and Willie Wilson’s RBI single gave them the lead for good. Jeff Heathcock nailed down the save with two scoreless innings of relief. Lloyd Moseby (WAS) and Gene Larkin (MCT) each got three hits in the game. Final Score – MCT 7 WAS 5
Game #6: Lloyd Moseby stole home in the 6th inning to break a 2-2 tie and drove home two others with a 9th inning single to lead Washington to a 7-3 win over Montana. Moseby ended up 4 for 5 with 2 runs and 3 RBI. For Montana, Willie Randolph reached base all five times up at the plate with a 3 for 3, 2 walks game. Washington had taken the lead 2-1 in the 3rd on a George Brett RBI single and Moseby RBI triple. Montana had tied the game in the 5th on Kevin Seitzer’s RBI single. The Cutthroats actually got the tying run to the plate in the 9th, but Ellis Burks struck out with the bases loaded to end the game. Final Score – WAS 7 MCT 3
Game #7: Washington broke a 2-2 tie with a 3-run 6th inning to beat the Cutthroats 5-2. The Past Timers had taken an early 2-0 lead on RBI singles from Dale Murphy and Buddy Bell in the 1st. Montana tied it with a solo HR from Carmen Castillo in the 2nd and a RBI triple from Kevin Seitzer in the 3rd. Washington’s big 6th inning then came courtesy of a pair of HRs. Dale Murphy got them the lead with a solo shot and Bell made the lead bigger with a 2-run blast later in the inning. Final Score – WAS 5 – MCT 2
Series Summary * Washington dominated the series and won it 6 games to 1. Montana finishes their opening 21-game homestand with a disappointing 7-14 mark while Washington breaks out from their early season .500 start to improve to 12-7. Series stars included Dale Murphy (8-28, 3 HRs) and Lloyd Moseby (10-28) for Washington and Darryl Strawberry (9-28, 7 RBI) for Montana. On the mound, Floyd Bannister was 2-0 with a only 2 runs allowed over 14.2 innings pitched to lead the Past Timers. One other interesting stat and trend in the series was Washington’s desire to run and run a lot. The Past Timers stole 15 bases in the series and were only caught 4 times. Including in successful steals were three of home.
