Stockton Wings @ Chicago Demolition

Series Preview Stockton came into the Windy City for some early 1987 Mid-West Winter League action.
Game #1: Bobby Ojeda 2-0 1.23 ERA, beat the Demolition 3 to 1. Frank White went 4 for 4 for the Wings.
Game #2: Bill Doran had 3 hits and Doug Drabek improved to 2-0 0.57 ERA on the year. Final Score Chicago 6 – Stockton 3.
Game #3: Dave Stewart 1-1 3.60 ERA went 8 strong innings and Chicago had 10 hits in the 6 to 1 victory over the Wings of Stockton.
Game #4: A 3-run 5th inning did more than enough damage for the Wings. Final Score 3 to 2 Stockton over Chicago.
Game #5: Bobby Ojeda 3-0 2.08 ERA, went 7 solid innings, Ray knight had a 2-run HR and 2 hits. Final Score Stockton 5 – Chicago 3.
Game #6: A Mickey Tettelton Grand Slam and a 3 hit game by Chilli Davis were not enough for the Wings. Eric Davis was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI’s, including two Doubles. Dennis Eckersley spot started, was roughed up, but the Chicago pen held out. Final Score. Chicago 8 – Stockton 7
Game #7: Rubber Match game. Frank white had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s, but Chicago had a 4 for 5 game from Chet Lemon. Despite a late inning comeback from the Wings, Chicago’s Von Hayes (3 for 5) hit a walk off 3-run HR in the bottom of the 9th to win it 10 to 8 for Chicago.
Series Summary * Stockton played a very hard and well played series. They are a team to watch out for.

Bethel Champs @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview NL East teams Bethel Champs and the Manhattan Gas Hornets meet in the Big Apple in the 2nd week of MWWL play. Bethel sports a 2-5 record, Manhattan 3-2.
Game #1: MGH 7 BET 4
Clancy W (1-1); Sutton L (0-1)
HRs BET-A.Davis (3), Porter (1), MGH-Dawson(12), Jacoby (2)
Up 5-4 after 6, Manhattan plates single runs in the 7th and 8th to seal the deal. 5 walks by Bethel pitchers plus 3 errors hand game to the home team.
Game #2: Barnburner – MGH 10, BET 9 with 3 run
9th by the Gas Hornets to pull this one out.
Dawson 3 run HR (3) in 1st give Manhattan the 3-0 lead. Bernazard rbi double, Owen SF, Young rbi single and Bradley rbi single make it 4-3 Bethel in the 4th.
5th inning Daniels double followed by Simmons rbi single and it 5-3 Champs. In the bottom half, the Gas Hornets answer with 3 runs keyed by rbi Yount triple. 6-5 Manhattan after 5.
BUT – Bethel explodes for 4 runs in the 6th sparked by Bradley’s 2 round double. Wegman and Young are long gone by now, but bullpens really aren’t helping.
In the 7th Manhattan nibbles away for another run to trail Bethel 9-7 setting the stage for the 9th inning.
Stoddard on the mound. Sax leads off with a single. With Sax stealing, Yount swings at the pitchout and hits a bleeder in RF for a single, Sax goes to 3rd. Joyner follows hitting into DP, Sax scoring 9-8 Bethel 2 outs. Dawson punches one to the left side for a single, Stanley comes in to PH for Righetti. Stoddard is relieved by Larry Andersen – Dawson steals 2nd. Felder then moves to 2b, Dawson looked like he might have lost a step after the steal. Stanely swings, no, he checks and draws the walk. Jody Davis steps up, hits a fly ball to the gap, Felder scores and they’re waving in Stanley. Kingery throws, Owen relays but Stanley is safe easily, game over Manhattan prevails 10-9.
WP – Righetti (1-1) LP Andersen (0-1) BS 1
Game #3: Not much drama in this one after 4 run 2nd by Manhattan. (Well 3 of the runs were on a bases loaded triple by starter Zane Smith!) They score in 3 more innings (with 2 runs being the minumum) for a final score of 13-4. Bethel walloped 12 hits including a Bernazard HR (2). Z. Smith finally was scored on, but couldn’t get the win when Hudson couldn’t get the hold by allowing 2 runs in the 6th. That’s when, with the score tied 4-4, Manhattan began to go nuts scoring 2, 3, and 4 runs in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innnings. Moreland (1) homered for Manhattan in their 16 hit attack. Hudson ended up getting the win (1-0) and BS (1). Comstock took the loss (0-1) in relief.
Game #4:   In the 1st of two extra inning games, both teams plated a run in the 9th making it 2-2. Both of Bethel’s runs came off solo HRs (A.Davis (4), M.Diaz (1)) off of starter Jimmy Key. Manhattan meanwhile scrounged for their runs including a fielding fiasco by Bethel in the 9th leading to the tie. With 1 out, Felder pops way up there, but 3bman Sharperson drops it, “he just dropped it”. Felder steals 2nd, Griffin up, and he flies out to Marshall in LF, but Marshal DROPS it! Felder has to hold at 3rd. Key is lifted for PH Jody Davis. Stoddard still on the mound – 1 out. He flies to Marshall in LF, he catches it at the warning track and Felder scores tagging up. So 1 run in the 9th on no hits and 2 errors.
Bottom of the twelfth, Yount leads off against Chuck Finley and mashes one over the LF wall (1), his 4th hit of the game and Manhattan takes the 3-2 win. Reardon (1-0) the win, Finley (0-2) the loss.
Game #5: Magrane and Alexander started this one and pitched very well, but this extra inning game was similiarly strange. Bethel goes up 2-1 in the 8th, 3-1 in the 9th only to see Manhattan score 2 in the bottom of the 9th to tie. Phil Bradley hit an RBI triple in the 3rd for 1-0 lead. Jacoby tied it in the 4th when he grounded into DP. Bradley put the Champs back up 2-1 when he homered (2) in the 8th. Then an Oberkfell 1 out single in the 9th made it 3-1 Bethel.
Bottom of 9th with 1 out a double by Jacoby and single by Jody Davis put runners on the corners. Gladden goes to 3b running for Jacoby, Felder goes into run for Davis and steals 2b. Kenny Williams then bloops one down the LF line driving in both runners to tie the game on his double. Going into extra innings (again). Righetti continues on the mound for Manhattan and blanks the Champs in the 10th and 11th. 2 outs bottom of 11th, Kenny Williams again comes through (Jones now pitching in the 11th) hitting his 2nd double of the game. Jones gives Griffin the IW – and O’Neill comes in to PH for Rags. He gets an IW too. They felt that Sax was the better target to get an out. He comes up with the bases loaded – smashes one to RF for the game winning walk-off single 4-3 Manhattan.
WP Rags (2-1)
LP Jones (0-1)
BS Andersen (2)
Game #6: Game 6 – Bethel Time. The Champs down 3-0 after 4 decide enough is enough and beat up on Jim Clancy (L 1-2) for 2 in the 5th and 3 in the 7th on their way to the 6-3 win. No homers for Bradley in this one, but he was 3 for 3 with a walk, single, double, and triple and 2 rbis. Spike Owen also had 3 hits (and 3 runs for Bethel). Blyleven gave up three solo HRs (Dawson -4 and Jacoby 3, 4) through 4, but settled in and went 8 innings, 4 hits, 8 Ks for the win (1-1). Stoddard (1) got the save.
Game #7: The series finale seemed a bit tame after a 2-1 Manhattan lead in the 1st became 4-1 after 2. Zane Smith cruised for 7 innings, Buice finished up the final 2 for save #1 – although he finally gave up a run on an Alvin Davis HR (5) in the 9th. Final score 4-2 Gas Hornets. 9 different Manhattan battles got singles (all 9 Gas Hornet hits were singles). Only 1 Manhattan run was earned.
Smith moves to 2-0. Sutton moves to 0-2.
Series Summary * Manhattan may have taken the series 6-1, but with few exceptions all the games were tough fought matches. Two extra inning games and another were the Gas Hornets had to score 3 in the bottom of the 9th to win by one. Easily Bethel could have had a big series.
Bethel is now 3-11, Manhattan is 9-3 for the young season. (and 6 of those 12 games have been 1 run affairs, 3 or them extra innings – ugh)

Hollywood Vampires @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview Two teams likely facing a long season, the Vampires do have slightly more pitching maybe that will result in a series win. Winnipeg is has a great number 3 hitter in Calderon and a decent #4 in Incaviglia to head the Goldeye attack. Both teams started the season 1 and 6 so this series was all about avoiding the basement.
Game #1: Harras was going for the Vampires and Moyer for the Goldeyes. Moyer was decent 4 in 7 innings as Brantley homered. Harris was quite good 3 in 7 but two homers allowed to Calderon! Smith was in to close the 4-3 game but Incaviglia took him deep to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. However Winnipeg blew it in the 10th. Hollywood 5 Winnipeg 4
Game #2: Bosio was great for Winnipeg 1 in 8.2 and Searge got the 1 out save. Bankhead was pretty poor allowing 4 in 5 and a Tom Brookens homer. WPG 4 HV 1
Game #3: Winnipeg fans are really unhappy about Glavine the number one pick was awful again lowering his era to 11.66 allowing 5 in 7 and falling to 0-3 as McCaskill was great 1 earned in 9 innings, and Howell was a monster with 4 rbis and a homer. HV 8 WPG 2
Game #4: Gantner homered as the Vampires win 7-2 as Sutcliffe was great again.
Game #5: Winnipeg wins in 13 innings as Myers blew the save in the 8th for the Vampires. WPG 4 HV 3 (13)
Game #6: INKY INKY was the chant as the Winnipeg slugger hit a homer drove in 5 as Moyer was great no earned in 9 innings. Wpg 11 HV 1
Game #7: Inky tried to make the comeback with a 2 run homer off Smith in the 9th but it wasn’t enough as the Vamps win 4-3.
Series Summary * The Goldeyes play hard but fall a game short losing the series 4-3 vs the Vampires. Inky has to get consideration for player of the week with 3 homers and 11 rbis in 7 games. Calderon is auditioning well for contenders as he has 5 homers and a .368 average in 13 games played.
Jack Howell had a big series for the Vampires as he got a ton of rbis in this series.

Fort Worth Panthers @ Montana Cutthroats

Series Preview Fort Worth visits Montana for a 7-game series. Fort Worth hits the road after opening the season with a successful 3-2 series win. Montana, in the middle of an opening 21-game homestand, tries to overcome a disappointing but competitive 2-5 series loss to Chicago.
Game #1: The Panthers got started early as Fred McGriff got a 2-run single in the 1st. Fort Worth added another in the 4th on Milt Thompson’s RBI double. Ron Darling did the rest as he tossed a 2-hitter over 8 innings without allowing a run. Fort Worth added some insurance with 2-run innings in the 8th and 9th. For some reason, Darling was relieved in the 9th and Montana broke the shutout with 2 meaningless runs in the 9th. Keith Hernandez and Thompson each had 3 hits for the Panthers. Final Score – FWP 7 – MCT 2
Game #2: Donnie Hill turned into Babe Ruth for a game. Hill was 4 for 5, hit two HRs, drove in 3, and scored 4 times to lead the Fort Worth Panthers to a 7-5 win. Montana actually held the lead going into the 7th inning, 4-3, but were denied a win as Geno Petralli got a clutch 2-out, 2-run double to put the Panthers ahead to stay. Final Score – FWP 7 – MCT 5
Game #3: The Montana Cutthroats drove Fort Worth starter Les Straker to the showers in the 1st inning with a 6-run explosion. Cutthroats starter Mike Krukow then seemed to be cruising along with his 6-0 lead and no hits allowed through 4 innings. However, the Panthers decided to make a game of it and got a 3-run 5th inning and added another run in the 7th. Montana’s Willie Wilson then hit a shocking 3-run HR to make it 9-4 in the 8th. But the pesky Panthers continued to battle and actually got the tying run to the plate in the form of Fred McGriff. McGriff then grounded out to end the game. Final Score – MCT 9 – FWP 6
Game #4: Fort Worth got a solo HR from Keith Hernandez in the 1st inning and then were shutdown by Montana starter Mike Witt the rest of the way. Witt got some offensive support thanks to an Ellis Burks 2-run double and solo HRs from Darryl Strawberry, Ron Kittle, and Steve Balboni to get the win. Witt went the distance allowing only 7 hits and striking out 6. Kittle and Balboni each had 3 hits to pace a 16 hit Cutthroat attack. Final Score – MCT 8 – FWP 1
Game #5: The Fort Worth Panthers scored 3 times in the 12th inning to outlast the Montana Cutthroats 6-3. Down 1-0, Montana got solo HRs from Carmen Castillo and Willie Randolph to take a 2-1 lead. Steve Lombardozzi tied the game in the 6th with a solo shot of his own. Later in the inning, Fort Worth took the lead on Lance Parrish’s pitch hit single. The Cutthroats tied it in the 8th on Darryl Strawberry’s sac fly. The bullpens reigned until the 12th when Fort Worth scored the winning run on Lombardozzi’s sacrifice squeeze. Carney Lansford hit a 2-run HR later in the inning to complete the scoring. Final Score – FWP 6 – MCT 3
Game #6: A pitcher’s duel broke out in game 6. Fort Worth’s Ron Darling and Montana’s Mark Grant went toe to toe. Grant prevailed as he only allowed a 1st inning solo HR to Fred McGriff and three hits overall in 7 innings. Darling, meanwhile, went the distance allowing only 5 hits and 2 runs. He was the hard luck loser thanks to Willie Randolph’s game tying RBI double in the 6th and Mariano Duncan’s solo HR in the 7th. Final Score – MCT 2 – FWP 1
Game #7: The rubber match of the series started innocently enough as Fort Worth’s Fernando Valenzuela and Montana’s Floyd Youmans kept the bats at bay with a scoreless first 4 innings. However, the Cutthroats erupted for a 5-run 5th inning thanks to Willie Wilson’s 2-run triple. After Donnie Hill got the Panthers on the board in the 6th with an RBI single, the Cutthroats put thoughts of a comeback on ice with 2 runs in the bottom half. Kevin Seitzer went 4 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead Montana. Seitzer has been on base at least once in all 14 games this season so far. Final Score – MCT 7 – FWP 2
Series Summary * Montana takes the closely fought series 4 games to 3 for their first ever series win in the MWWL. Fort Worth was led at the plate by Keith Hernandez (11-31, .355) and Milt Thompson (10-28, .357). On the mound, the Panthers’ Ron Darling was dominating going 16 innings while allowing only 7 hits and 2 ER. Offensively, Montana was led by Kevin Seitzer who end the series going 14-31 (.452). Mark Grant went 14 innings allowing only 10 hits and 4 ER to lead their pitching staff.
