Missouri heads to Steel City with heads hung low...
Steel City heads home leading 2-0.

Steel City was shocked to make the playoffs, let alone the World Series. I think the magic dust may have finally disappeared...

Game 3: Doc Medich vs. Luis Leal

Sluggers draw first blood, scratching out a run in the 1st. But Missouri strikes back with 3 runs in the top of the 4th, and adds another in the 5th to take a 4-1 lead. But Steel City has proven resilient in these playoffs, and scores 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th to tie it up 4-4. Rick Camp serves up a solo HR to George Foster in the 7th inning, and that's all the Black Bears need to take the game 5-4.

Game 4: Tom Seaver vs. Dennis Martinez

Both starting pitchers are brilliant, pitching 7 shutout innings apiece. But in the 8th Missouri finally gets to Martinez for 4 runs. Meanwhile Seaver's humming along with a 1-hit shutout. But Harold Baines swats a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 9th to make it interesting... but that's all the magic in the Steel City bats this day.

Game 5: Pete Vuckovich vs. Len Barker

4 games in, the home team has yet to win. The Sluggers desperately want to win this game to put the pressure on Missouri to win the last two games. Both SP are good, but Vuckovich is better, only surrendering 1 run over 7 innings. Barker gives up 3 in his 8.1 innings and the end result is a 3-1 Black Bear victory, in which Steel City actually outhit the visitors 7-6.

So the series heads back to Missouri for the final 2 games (hopefully there's two!).

Home teams were 0-5. Would that continue?

Game 6
Abbott versus Morris

You're never guess who the hitting star was...

SCS1 - Buckner CS then Gibson doubles
SCS1 - Baines RBI single
Steel City has scored in the 1st inning of all 3 road games
MBB3 - Jack Morris Single
MBB3 - Schmidt RBI single (Morris scores)
MBB5 - Morris reaches on Almon error
MBB5 - Rose RBI 3B
MBB5 - Schmidt Sac Fly
MBB6 - Wilson 2-out RBI 2B
MBB6 - Morris RBI single
MBB6 - Rose RBI 2B (Morris scores)
Missouri 6, Steel City 1
SCS7 - Schmidt error puts runners on 2nd & 3rd with 2 out
SCS7 - Balboni PH 2-out 2-RBI TRIPLE
MBB7 - Sundberg 2-out 2-RBI 2B
SCS9 - Quisenberry brought in for Missouri
SCS9 - Oester 2-out single
SCS9 - PH-Milner flies out to Foster

Missouri finally wins a game at home in the World Series.

Congrats to John and Steel City on a great season. The Sluggers certainly gave Missouri everything they could handle - especially in our 3 home games. I would have liked to have seen a Seaver/Martinez Game 7 match-up, but I'll settle for this outcome!

Steel City 3-8-1
Missouri 8-14-1

WP: J. Morris (1-0)
LP: G. Abbott (0-1)

Abbott 5.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Morris 8 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K

Morris 2-3 at the plate with 3 RS and 1 RBI
Rose 2 hits, 2B, 3B, RS, 2 RBI
Trillo 3 hits, 2B, RS
Schmidt 3-3, 2B, 1 RS, 2 RBI

Trillo hit .370 while playing errorless defense at 2B

Baines hit .409 with 4 2B, 1 HR & 8 RBI (and was a constant thorn in Missouri's side)

Congratulations to the Missouri Black Bears on the 1981 World Series championship!
