Saskatoon Cyclone
Weekly Preview: The Cyclone host a couple of teams who have had pretty much identical starts to their seasons in Syracuse and St. Clair and then finish off against Chicago who have had a not so nice 2-6 start.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Saskatoon Cyclone Kevin Lowe makes his first appearance at the blueline for Saskatoon and picks up two assists and a fighting major with dance partner Stan Smyl in a nice entertaining 5-5 slugfest between Saskatoon and Syracuse.
The teams opened with two goals apiece in the first period including a power play tally by Ron Wilson for Saskatoon and then things really opened up in the 2nd period when the goalies dozed off and each allowed three goals despite only a 11-10 shot margin for Syracuse.
The 3rd period was quiet although tough on the old hockey gear as by the end of the game the two teams combined for 74 hist with a 42-32 edge to Saskatoon with defenceman Doug Halward leading all the Bulldogs with 7 and Bob Gainey getting 6 for Saskatoon.
Lindsay Ruff, Doug Risebrough and Pat Hughes displayed some great team chemistry registering a cool -3 each for the night despite getting very little ice time. Look for that marriage to go the way of Ike and Tina Turner.
Side note … Doug Halward had an insane 37:53 played in the game with Robert Picard logging 33:16 for Syracuse while Rick Green had almost 31 minutes for the Cyclone … I’d be curious to know what the fatigue penalties (if any) are for players with too much ice time on a shift and in total.

3. SAS, Bob Gainey (1 goal, 6 hits)
St. Clair Shores Saints @ Saskatoon Cyclone Robbie Ftorek and Dave Shand got tossed from the game in separate scraps and Mike Liut wishes he had been as he allows 7 goals in a 7-1 romp by Saskatoon.
The game featured just a little bit of scrapping with 68 minutes in penalties and two game misconducts handed out as the teams displayed a slight hate-on for each other. Ftorek got the door for fighting with Kevin Lowe (2nd fight in 2 games) with Shand getting the boot for his jumping on Brad Marsh at the same time as Rick Vaive and JP Kelly were tossing punches. Other bouts featured a draw between Russ Anderson and Pat Hughes (good to see Hughes using his hands for something) and a complete smackdown handed to St. Clair blueliner Doug Wilson by Saskatoon’s Barry Melrose. Yikes.
Despite the lop-sided score, the game was really not clearly dominated by Saskatoon as the shots were only 40-35. The difference was that while Saskatoon netminder Denis Herron was steady but not flashy, St. Clair’s Liut was simply porous.

3. SAS – Lowe 3 A
Chicago Underground @ Saskatoon Cyclone With Chicago (2-6) coming into town Saskatoon expected a cakewalk and sorry Stray but it was – with the Underground walking all over the Cyclone with an easy 5-1 win.
Never in doubt really Saskatoon netminder Denis Herron who has played all the team’s home games to date was very shaky in nets allowing a couple of goals while out of position and then at least one on a low-percentage shot.
The Underground simply made their shots count, missing the net only 11 times in 47 attempts while the flailing Cyclone missed 25 of 67.
Resident ogre, Bob (Shrek) Dailey doled out 9 hits for Chicago in what was a surprisingly quiet game after the bashfest in Game 2.

Biloxi Blades
Weekly Preview: 3 roadies and only 1 home game this week for the Blades. Could end up being a very ugly week.
CapJack Rangers @ Biloxi Blades Was getting run time error whenever I tried playing the game with Biloxi as a human (people have been telling me for years I was not…I suppose they’ll make a big deal out of this) so I played computer vs computer and CapJack took the game 4-3. That close and all 3 stars went to Rangers, and a noteable player as well. Blades had nary a single notable. I suppose Rangers scored into their own net?
Weekly Summary: 0-1 at home this week for Biloxi. Need to shape up on the road or a big drop in standings upcoming.

 Philadelphia Firebirds
Weekly Preview: Philly comes into the week riding high and taking on three tough opponents.
Saskatoon Cyclone @ Philadelphia Firebirds Cylones Rick Vaive scored on the first 2 shots of the game putting the Firebirds in a hole they just couldnt get out of. Donnie Edwards stopped 34/35 shots and stoned the Birds on 2 break aways. The game was highlighten with a 6 player brawl in the 2nd period with Maloney being ejected for spitting in the face of Mel Bridgeman

Stars

Charlestown Chiefs @ Philadelphia Firebirds Philly comes into the Charlestown game after being beat by a hot goalie only to find that Pat Riggin was even hotter. Philly outshot the Chiefs 42-13 …that’s FORTY TWO to THIRTEEN!!!! But Riggins could not be beat and the Rat scored two goals for the Chief victory.

Starts

Vermont Foresters @ Philadelphia Firebirds Philly ends its homestand facing a tough Forrester team. Philly would not be denied in this game outshotting Vermont 51-31. Led my Marcel Dionne and his three assists. John Anderson scored on both of his opening shots and the Firebirds never took their foot off the gas.

STARS

01. Dionne
02. Anderson
03. Stephenson

Weekly Summary: Disappointing homestand . Philly controlled most of each game only to again not being able to convert on the PP. Philly will need to find some offense if they expect to make a playoff run.

Charlestown Chiefs
Weekly Preview: Two home games for the slumping Chiefs. Can the Hanson Brothers spark the team?
Saint Croix Falls Lumberjacks @ Charlestown Chiefs The Lumberjacks chop the Chiefs 6-3. Not much to say for the home team.

Chicago Underground @ Charlestown Chiefs The good news: Charlestown scores 4 goals in this one.

The bad news: They also give up 6 goals, like the last game.

The ugly news: Mike Bossy was the long-expected pick of the Chiefs at #2 overall, before a last second change of heart landed Ray Bourque instead (who was a -2 and had zero points in this game). Bossy posts 2 goals and 1 assist against the team he expected to join.

Weekly Summary: Is it 1980-81 yet?

Brooklyn Harbor Rats
Weekly Preview: One home game for the Rats this week against visiting Biloxi
Biloxi Blades @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats The Rats ride Greg Millen’s 30 save performance to victory. Brooklyn opens the scoring when the Blades see two players whistled off for a 5 on 3 Rats power play. Mike Gartner’s 2nd of the season comes soon after, and with a 5 on 4 advantage, Pete Mahovlich gets his 1st of the year. It stays a 2-0 game until with 9 minutes remaining when Biloxi’s Don Maloney gets his 7th of the season to cut the lead in half. But Millen stands tall, stopping the final 7 shots to preserve the 2-1 home win.
Weekly Summary: Another nice defensive outing for the Rats, but where’s the goals?

Pittsburgh Spirit
Weekly Preview: Pittsburgh so far seems to be a fairly good team. Good defense, good goaltending, and solid scoring touch. Let’s see how well that holds up with our lone home game this week against Philadelphia…

It’s always a party when Pittsburgh and Philly go head to head!

Philadelphia Firebirds @ Pittsburgh Spirit 1st Period sees Secord (3) put Philly up 1-0. A little over 2 minutes later Huber (3) ties it at 1-1. Philly gets 2 more goals from Anderson (2) on the PP and McKegney (5) at even strength to take a 3-1 lead into the 2nd period.

2nd period sees MacLeish (4) score a shorty to bring the Spirit within 1 as it’s 3-2 Philly.

3rd period… Edberg (2) pots the tying goal with some much needed secondary scoring.

With less than 2 minutes to go tied 3-3, Vickers fires a slapper from the circle past Stephenson to grab a late lead for PIT 4-3.

Philly would try to rally and throw many shots on net, but Baker is up to the task as PIT hangs on to win this one 4-3.

St. Clair Shores Saints

Silk City Whales @ St. Clair Shores Saints No scoring in the first period. In the second, the Saints get on track and score one – thanks to Thompson’s 6th goal of the year. In the 3rd, Malone scores. The Whales score one to make it close. But, Rob Ramage scores an empty netter to seal the win.

Mackinac Island Moose
Weekly Preview: After 3 games on the road and a 0-4-0 record the Moose come home to the island for some home cooking and a lengthy 4 game homestand against Pittsburg, Brooklyn, CapJack and San Diego. With a 1-7 record and only 2 points, the team needs a good performance to take the heat off the head coach.
CapJack Rangers @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 8, Rangers 6 – The difference was the 2 point conversion after the touchdown for the Moose. Not exactly a confidence builder for the goalies this game. Neither team led by more than 1 until the Moose got an empty netter at the end. Moose with more SOG 35-24, but the Rangers with more scoring chances 26-17. Not sure how they got more scoring chances than shots on goal. The Moose got the only 2 power play conversions. 6 powerplays for the Moose to only 2 for the Rangers. With the win, and scoring at least 5 goals, all ticket holders get free fudge at the local Rocky and Bullwinkle Fudge Shoppe.

San Diego Mariners @ Mackinac Island Moose San Diego 6, Moose 3 – The Moose jump out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Napier and Hislop. Then the Mariners get up to full speed and bury the home team with goals by Sargent, Perreault, Savard, Connor, Simmer and Bulley. 3 goals on the powerplay.

Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 8, Harbor Rats 5 – Close game until the final 10 minutes when the home team nets 3, including an empty netter. Statistically very close game. Lever with a hat trick for the Moose. Miller with 2 goals for the visitors. Oh yes, and free fudge for all ticket holders.
1st star – Lever 3g1a
2nd star – Barber 2g1a
3rd star – Lysiak 2g
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Mackinac Island Moose Sprint 5, Moose 5 – Capping off the week, and bringing the goal total to 46 for the 4 game homestand, and exciting come from behind tie for the Moose. The tying goal scored by pulling the goalie and getting a deflection by Barber. Both teams led at some point, and Pittsburg had a 2 goal lead off a shortie early in the 3rd, after fighting off a 5 minute major. The Moose go balls out the final 10, closing to one on a goal by Lever, and then Barber helps keep from one more L on the sheet. 5 goals, but no free fudge for a tie.
1st star – Barber 2g1a
2nd star – Hedberg 1g1a
3rd star – Sheppard 1g
Weekly Summary: 5 points in 4 games in a big improvement over the 2 points in the previous 8 games. The Moose continue to tweak their gameplan and notch a few wins. Standing at 3-8-1 7 points and hoping to climb out of the title worst record in the league.

Vermont Foresters
Weekly Preview: quebec comes south for a visit and then st croix falls for then 1st half of a home/away pair.
Quebec City Le Blue @ Vermont Foresters believe it or not, this game seemed even more boring then its 2-2 outcome. the le blue dominated the 1st, holding a 12-6 edge in shots but trailed 1-0 after a pp goal by mike foligno. the play advantage swung to vermont in the 2nd period outshooting quebec 11-8 but the foresters now trailed 2-1 after goals by lumley and leduc. (sounds like a talk radio team from the french speaking province) vermont then dominated the 3rd with an 18-5 edge in shots but could only get 1 past tony-o and had to settle for yet another tie. esposito made 33 saves for le blue. morris lukowich had a goal and assist and kent nilsson assisted on both goals for the foresters.
Saint Croix Falls Lumberjacks @ Vermont Foresters st croix falls came into town with the leagues best record after 2 weeks so vermont made the surprise decision to have mike veisor make his season debut in goal. it proved to be a very pleasant surprise as veisor did not allow a goal to the lumberjacks in a stunning 3-0 shutout. vermont outshot st croix falls 16-9 in a scoreless 1st period. lukowich and howe each netted their 5th goals of the year in the 2nd period and eric vail added his 1st of the year on the powerplay late in the 3rd for the end result. billy smith made 35 saves for the visitors. kent nilsson added 2 more assists for the foresters.
