WEEKLY PREVIEW: | 3 home games for the once-great Spirit. |
GAME #1: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT | The Sasquatch put their Big Foot down and win this one on the back of The Great One and his 2 G, 2 A night. |
GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT | Knick-knack, Mackinac… Island, comes to town. 3 first period goals give them the lead they would never lose as they go on to win 4-3. |
GAME #3: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. PITTSBURGH SPIRIT | The Mountaineers score 4 first-period goals and never lose that lead as they win 4-3 (deja vu?) |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Three home games, three losses. Another week in paradise! |
Chicago Underground | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Chicago with 2 home games at the Capone Center & taking on an I-94 foe & a division rival. |
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND | A back & forth game with a tie after the 2nd leads to a 2-goal period by both teams. They head to overtime & neither team scores there. It ends deadlocked as it was after, 2, 3 & OT.
Final Score: Michigan 5 – Chicago 5 Labatts 3-Star Selection: Game Winner: – None Notables: |
GAME #2: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. CHICAGO UNDERGROUND | Chicago gets out to a 2-0 lead, but after the 2nd Period, Chicago holds a 1 goal lead. They get 1 more than the Moose in the 3rd & walk out of the Capone Center with a victory.
Final Score: Chicago 7 – Mackinac Island 5 Labatts 3-Star Selection: Game Winner: – Paul Holmgren Notables: |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | 3 out of the possible 4 points is a nice week for the Underground. The roadshow vs. St. Clair Shores & Brooklyn could give Chicago a nice boost in the standings. However, a couple of losses could do them in. |

Mackinac Island Moose | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Just one game on Mackinac Island this week when the Charlestown Chiefs wander on over. The last time these teams played, in Charlestown, they racked up almost 100 penalty minutes that culminated in a bench-clearing brawl that saw 10 majors and 2 game misconducts handed out. The cut men are ready. |
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE | Chiefs 5, Moose 5 – First period sees 4 skirmishes, that result in 8 minutes of 4-on-4 action. Interspersed between the fights, the Moose manage 2 goals, with Kurri and Propp scoring. The Chiefs get the first one of the period with a score from McKegny. It’s 2-1 Moose after 1.
Only 2 little fights in the 2nd period. But that does not mean more scoring. It’s like these teams came on the ice to fight. Only one score in the period comes from Lysiak early in the period. The Moose kill off 2 minors, and the Chiefs kill one. Period ends 3-1 Moose. 3rd period sees only one penalty early, McKegny on a hook. The Moose make it count with a powerplay goal from Beers, and the Moose feel pretty good, up 4-1. The Chiefs then dominate play, the Moose getting little offense organized. First Preston cuts the lead to 2 at the 15 minutes to go mark. Then Sulliman cuts it to 1, 4-3, at the 10-minute mark, and it’s game on. Even play the next 7 minutes, until Kurri zips one in, to make it 5-3, and the home crowd breathing easier. The clock bleeds down to just under 2 minutes and the Chiefs pull the goalie. The Moose are unable to clear their zone, and the Chiefs are in shooting gallery mode. Nicholls blasts on in at the 1-minute mark. The next 30 seconds see the puck-moving through the neutral zone a lot, and then the Chiefs make one final push, and it’s Nicholls finding the back of the net with only 13 seconds on the clock. Major downer. Chiefs carry the momentum into overtime and keep Beaupre busy, fending off 5 shots. The shellshocked Moose squad can manage only 2 weak long-range attempts, and the Moose let this one slip away. 1st star – Kurri 2G 3pts |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Another fiesty battle. 6 minor fights. And a draw. Moose need to figure out how to match up with an aggressive team and not get blown out with 4 3rd period goals. |
CapJack Rangers | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The rangers play Texas and Syracuse at home and New Castle and Portland on the road – tough week. |
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS | Cochrane scores an early PP goal for the Rangers but Texas then nets 3 goals before the period is over. Tucker, Tucker, and Andreychuk. Period 1 ends, 3-1 Texas (and this is perhaps the easiest team of the week).
2nd period – Trottier scores in the 1st 2 minutes to make it 3-2, then Crowder scores to tie it 8 1/2 minutes in. Maybe there’s hope. But with 5 left, Nilsson scores for Texas, and the Brahmas retake the lead. But Crowder nets his 2nd (PP) with a minute left and the 2nd period ends knotted 4-4. Then the 3rd – Texas scores with 2 minutes left – BUT Silk and Trottier scored before that goal – and then Trottier gets 2 EN goals in the final minute (for a 4 goal, 1 assist game) and the Rangers win it 8-5! |
GAME #2: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS | Well Syracuse has developed into one of the top MWOTHL teams (if not the best) and this game was slated to be tough – TOO TOUGH. Period 1 – Broten scores twice in the 1st. Then Neely scores 2 minutes into the 2nd and Syracuse is up 3-0! Mantha gets a PP goal in the last half of the 2nd, but then the Bulldogs get 2 more in the 3rd – an early PP goal from Mullen, and then Tonelli scores the final goal in the last minute for a 5-1 Syracuse win. CAP had a big lead in SOG: 31-22 and pretty much even in everything else (except PIM – we had 41 to 17 for the Bulldogs (both teams have 1 PP goal, but Syracuse gets an SH goal). Keith Crowder (19) and Phil Russell (15) get 34 of the 41 PIM!! Stars (ALL SYR) 1. Broten 2 goals 2. Sevigny 30 saves 3. Neely 1 goal |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Well, 1 and 1 is better than 0 and 2. We’re kind of potent, but our defense is a sieve! |
Charlotte Dynamo | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Charlotte entered the week 5-9-3 and is struggling to put together a string of wins following a disappointingly slow start. The season proceeded with home games versus two winning squads in New Castle and Portland. |
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO | The Dynamo fell short again, losing to the Ducks, 5-4, as Bobby Clarke, playing in his final season, relived prior glory by surprisingly achieving a hat trick, including the even-strength game-winning goal with 13:50 left in the game that broke a 4-4 tie. So Charlotte surrenders three goals in one game against Bobby Clarke who only scored 17 real-life goals in his actual swan song.
Ducks goalie Don Edwards shut out the Dynamo after the Clark game-winning goal and recorded 13 of his 25 saves in the decisive third period. The Dynamo, benefiting from 10 penalty minutes from the Ducks’ Tiger Williams, went three on three on the power play, but again suffered yet another one-goal loss among many early this season. Three stars: |
GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO | Charlotte rebounded with a bittersweet 4-2 win as Gil Perreault scored two first period goals and led the Dynamo to one final victory — then was swiftly dealt away to the team on the other bench (see the weekly summary for more).
Perreault scored a shorthanded goal 9:20 into the first period then followed up with an even-strength goal less than seven minutes later to spark the Dynamo to the early 2-0 lead that held up. Keans was the second star for Charlotte, recording 36 saves and only surrendering goals to Sean McKenna in the second period and a late goal by the Great One (#23 of the season already) at the 15:49 mark of the third period that narrowed Portland’s deficit to 3-2. Charlotte’s right-winger Bob Crawford provided a key insurance goal for the Dynamo with 13:04 left to play in the third period that closed the scoring. Glenn Anderson also scored for Charlotte. Three stars (all Charlotte) |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | The Dynamo tread water again at home, winning one and losing one, while the losses away from its arena continued mounting and even a .500 record looking more elusive. With its salary cap situation in complete disarray and this season already looking lost (with plenty of sample size), Charlotte conducted a firesale this weekend. It looked toward next year in acquiring two second-round picks — giving it four picks in the first two rounds of a really promising upcoming draft. The price to pay was parting with Sabre greats Gilbert Perreault (dealt with Portland) and Bill Hajt (traded to Syracuse). Without trading them, the alternative was losing both high-priced players in the offseason for absolutely nothing as the league’s salary-cap structure is configured: Charlotte chose to cut its losses right now — and acquire some cost certainty and potential hope for the future. |
Michigan Stags | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | 2-6-2 in their first 10 home games, Michigan looked to get back on the winning track with games against Brooklyn and Texas. If you like goals, this 2-game set was for you as a total of 25 were scored. However, if you like wins by the home team, you were out of luck as the best they could manage was a tie. |
GAME #1: BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS | Leading 5-3 with less than half the 3rd period to play, thanks to a pair by Johnny O, the Stags had to settle for a heartbreaking tie when Dave Christian brought the Rats within 1 at 11:36 and then a PPG by Phil Housley at 18:55 evened the score.
3 stars: (1) Michigan – John Ogrodnick [2G]; (2) Brooklyn – Phil Housley [1G+1A]; (3) Brooklyn – Mark Johnson [1G+1A] |
GAME #2: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS | The Stags locked horns with the Brahmas and after the dust had cleared, Texas had an 8-7 victory. Michigan came back from a 7-3 deficit with 3 3rd period goals in a 5:17 span before Dale McCourt scored an ENG. Mark Messier added a meaningless goal as time expired for an 8-7 final. The loss was especially frustrating given that the Stags outshot the visitors by a 50-21 margin. Horrible does not adequately describe Ron Low’s performance in the Michigan goal.
3 stars: (1) Texas – Reijo Ruotsalainen [2G]; Texas – Dale McCourt [1G+2A]; (3) Texas – Walt Poddubny [1G+2A] |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | As the losses mount, new owner John Beresford Tipton is reportedly mulling over a potential coaching change. |
New Castle Ducks | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Two home games this week for the Ducks- one against Patrick Division-leading CapJack in a rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup Finals. The other is against last-place expansion Michigan. The Ducks have been solid on defense this year but are struggling offensively, 14th in the 16 team MWOTHL. Can the Ducks start picking up the pace this week to stay competitive in the very tough Campbell Conference? |
GAME #1 – VISITING TEAM: | CapJack Rangers |
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS | CAP 5 NCD 2
It was all Rangers as Scott Arniel came up with a hat trick and Chico Resch made 29 saves in the victory. It was a wild first period with Arniel scoring at 1:09 and again at 5:12 to make it 2-0 CAP. Tiger Williams made it 2-1 at 9:13 before Mike Gillis (2) scored at 11:03 to make it 3-1. Barry Pederson (9) at 13:08 made it 3-2 and it looked like this was going to be a real barnburner. But in the second and third periods, the Rangers settled down holding NCD scoreless the rest of the way. Goals by Lucien DeBlois in the second and Arniel again in the third provided insurance. THREE STARS: Keith Crowder had 3 assists for CAP. Billy Smith gave up 5 goals in the losing effort. NCD outshot CAP 31-26 including 8-2 in the third period but Chico Resch stood tall in goal for the Rangers |
GAME #2 – VISITING TEAM: | Michigan Stags |
GAME #2: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS | MIC 2 NCD 1
Grant Fuhr made 25 saves and had a shutout until 2 seconds remained as Michigan upsets the Ducks at the Duck Pond. The Ducks are now 0-1-1 against the Stags this season. The game was scoreless until 18:28 of the second period when Mike Bullard scored his 14th of the year on a power play to make it 1-0 Michigan. It looked like that would be the game’s only goal as the teams continued to check each other closely. In the third period, as the Ducks were trying to get the tying goal, NCD dug their own hole getting three penalties in a row at 9:06, 12:05, and 15:37. On that final penalty, to Snepsts, Michigan scored on an unassisted goal by Pierre Turgeon (13). The Ducks pulled their goalie (Don Edwards) with 1:40 to go and Rick Middleton (13) broke up the shutout with 2 seconds to go. Without time left, that was it for the Ducks as the Stags pull off an upset win against the defending Stanley Cup champs THREE STARS: |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | It was a tough week for the Ducks as they drop 2 of 2 at home. With the Campell Conference populated with a whole bunch of strong teams, the Ducks are going to have a tough time making the playoffs unless they figure out a way to jump-start their offense before too long |
Saint Clair Shores Saints | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Saints host Chicago and New Castle |
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS | Anderson with a hat trick for the Underground. But, late in the game, McCarthy scores 3 in a row for a hat trick and the Saints win.
SCS 6 Chicago 5 1-Anderson |
GAME #2: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS | Boutette scores 2 straight goals for the Ducks. The Saints score 2 consecutive goals to tie it up. The game goes back and forth and Federko scores the game-winner for the Saints.
SCS 6 New Castle 5 1-McCarthy |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | SCS nips Chicago and New Castle. |
Dallas Drakes | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Two games against Texas and Ohio |
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. DALLAS DRAKES | Rob Ramage and Terry O’Reilly score first-period goals by the Drakes and the game would stay that way until the third period. Lindy Ruff gets the Brahmas on the board at 11:33 of the third period against his former team. Greg Gilbert and Dale Hunter trade goals and the game is 3-2 late in the third. With the Brahmas pouring it on, Ron Greschner gets his pocket picked at the Blue Line and Patrick Sundstrom buries it for the 4-2 win. |
GAME #2: OHIO LEGENDS VS. DALLAS DRAKES | The much-improved Legends come to town. Jan Ludvig starts the scoring for the Drakes but the lead is short-lived as Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Pavelich ties the game for the Legends and it heads to the first intermission knotted at 1. Pavelich strikes again with a tic-tac-toe type of goal with assists to Ken Linseman and Bill Derlago. Marcel Dionne ties the game up for the Drakes after Pat Riggin makes 3 saves in a row but Dionne buries the rebound. Greg Gilbert rips a bad goal buy Riggin :43 seconds in to give the Drakes the lead but Brian Maclellan ties the game up for the Legends. Riggin makes save after save but Terry O’Reilly puts the Drakes up for good and Ron Duguay adds an empty netter for a 5-3 final |
Texas Brahmas | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Only one game this week as Ohio comes to town |
GAME #1: OHIO LEGENDS VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS | A back and forth affair ends as it started, all tied up. Neither team ever led by more than a goal. Texas gets the equalizer halfway through the 3rd.
3 Stars: |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Texas will take the tie against the first place Legend, but can’t be too happy about it |
Ohio Legends | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Andes Mountaineers are the only team coming to Ohio this week. |
GAME #1: ANDES MOUNTAINEERS VS. OHIO LEGENDS | OHIO 6, ANDES 5
The Ohio Legends used a three-goal third period to hold off Andes, 6-5. Tony Tanti delivered a hat trick, his third of the season, in leading Ohio’s offense. A first-period line brawl set the tone in this contest, as Willi Plett and Stan Smyl for the Mountaineers and Bon Gainey of the Legends all received game misconducts. Mats Naslund (AND) and Bill Derlago (OHIO) both had a pair of goals and Mike Liut (24 saves), picked up the win. Bob Sauve deserved a better fate (28 saves(, as he falls to 0-7-3 on the year. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Ohio picks up a win in the only home game of the week. |
Brooklyn Harbor Rats | |
---|---|
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. BROOKLYN HARBOR RATS | 4 Goal 1st Period seals the 5-3 Win for Chicago |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | One game that was over in less than 20 Minutes for the Brooklyn Bunch |
Portland Sasquatch | |

---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Andes welcomes Adams foes Mackinac Island and Dallas of the Norris in back-to-back games this week. |
GAME #1: MACKINAC ISLAND MOSSE VS. ANDES MOUNTAINERS | A very hard physical game where it seemed at most points in the game the penalty box was occupied. Andes offense has the Moose defense backpedaling for the first two periods and goes up 3 – 1 but the 3rd period is all MIM(23-4 shot advantage). Andes has plenty of shots an empty net but with only 7.8 seconds left in the game MIM ties it up. The comeback is completed with 2:10 to go in OT Eddy Beers scores his 4th of the game to steal the win for the Moose1st Star – Beers 2nd Star – Goulet 3rd Star – Gilmour |
GAME #2: DALLAS DRAKES VS. ANDES MOUNTAINERS | Less than 24 hours later Andes welcomes Dallas to town. The first two periods are a blitzkrieg as the Drakes find themselves ahead 6 – 0. From there on out the Mountaineers decide it’s time to actually play. Too little too late.
1st Star – Gilmour |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Andes goes 0 – 2 at home this week. They blew a golden opportunity against MIM giving away the game in the last 10 seconds of the game. The next game they must have still had the night before game on their mind as they find themselves down 6 – 0 quickly. |
