Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago with 2 home games at the Capone Center for week #4. Chicago playing better, but still not up to their expectations.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: With a win & an expected loss & Chicago doesn’t feel too bad about themselves. The road should provide at least one more loss to Ohio, but in the Andes game the Underground might (I say might) have a chance.

CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers host St. Clair Shores this week. The Saints are off to a very good start in a tough division. The Rangers are playing so-so in a division of so-so performers. Some changes will be needed, will the Rangers be buyers OR SELLERS?
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. CAPJACK RANGERS Well, true to form, the Rangers score a lot of goals – but give up a lot, and in this game, they gave up more than they got. They fired more shots on goal (38-26) than the Saints, but the Saints had more scoring chances (23-19). The Rangers had too many penalties and gave St. Clair Shores 6 PPs and they converted on 2 of them.
St. Clair Shores took a 2-1 1st period lead even though the Rangers’ Silk scored the game’s opening goal 4 minutes in. The Saints got their 2 goals in the first from Francis and Mark Taylor – both of them PP goals. The PP opportunity was a 5 minute major to Arniel – and it was costly!! In fact, the game was filled with 3 roughing penalties AND 4 fighting majors! The 2nd period sees a fight between Bridgman and Crowder and TWO LAST MINUTE goals – one from McCarthy for the Saints to make it 3-1 at 19:06. Then with 1 second left in the period Crowder scores for the Rangers making it 3-2.However, the Saints shift the game to total control when Gustafsson scores 21 seconds into the 3rd period. McCarthy gets his 2nd goal of the game 6 minutes later and makes it 5-2 St. Clair Shores. But the Rangers don’t give up and Kromm scores a minute later and then Robinson gets an unassisted PP goal at the midpoint of the period and suddenly it’s 5-4 Saints. Stays that way into the final minute and CapJack pulls the goalie – and Wesley finds the EN to put some insurance on the Saints lead at 6-4. Good thing for the Saints because Silk manages to beat Barrasso 15 seconds later and the Rangers draw within 1 with 18 seconds left. But that was all and the Saints win it 6-5!
STARS
1. SCS – McCarthy 2 goals, 1 assist
2. CAP – Silk 2 goals
3. SCS – Francis 1 goal, 2 assists
Barrasso is having a great start and he makes 33 saves.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 home game and 1 loss. Not cool. The road trip might not be any better and the question now is, will the Patrick division have any team over .500?
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Jack Adams Division-leading Ohio Legends play host to a pair of foes outside the division this week. Charlestown and Chicago roll in to provide the opposition.
GAME #1: CHARLESTOWN CHIEFS VS. OHIO LEGENDS The Ohio Legends scored a club record seven first-period goals, en route to a 9-5 win over Charlestown. Ken Linseman scored twice in the first 7:44 to help the Legends build a 3-1 edge and three back-breaking goals in a three-minute stretch at the end end of the frame put the game away at 7-2, after one period.

For the game, the Chiefs outshot the Legends, 34-21, but Ohio’s power-play caused damage, lighting the lamp twice in four tries, while Charlestown was stymied in three tries.

Mark Pavelich handed out four assists, while Linseman, Tony Tanti, and Bill Derlago each had a pair of goals. Mike Liut turned aside 29 shots in picking up his fifth win of the year.

GAME #2: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. OHIO LEGENDS Rick Vaive’s fifth goal of the season, on the power play, with two seconds remaining, lifted Chicago to a 3-2 win over Ohio. Wasted was a shorthanded goal with Mark Pavelich just 36 seconds earlier that would even the score at 2-2.

Denis Savard inflicted the most damage for the Underground, delivering a goal and three assists. Chicago outshot the Legends, 32-29. The Underground cashed in on two of seven power-play chances, while the Legends went one for five with the man advantage. Bob Froese picked up a win to improve to 4-3-1, with 26 saves.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Ohio splits its games at home for the week. The Legends remain in first place in the division. Next week the Legends play three games at home and all of their Adams Division opponents.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games this week for the Ducks, against Texas and then against Conference rival Ohio
GAME #1: TEXAS BRAHMAS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS TEX 6 NCD 3
The Brahmas stun the Ducks with two shorthanded goals and two power-play goals by Tucker. Dennis Herron is sensational in goal making 31 saves. NCD outshot TEX 34-24 but Herron was the story. After a 2-2 first period, the Brahmas scored FOUR unanswered goals including a back-breaking shorthanded goal early in the third by Reijo Ruoutsalainen. In the third period, the Ducks poured it on, outshooting Texas 15-2! But, other than a goal by Boutette, Herron was flawless as Texas comes away with the win.THREE STARS:
1- TEX Tucker 2G 1 A 3 PTS
2- TEX Acton 1G 2 A 3 PTS Goal was shorthanded
3- TEX Ruff 1G 1 A 2 PTSNCD’s Tiger Williams drew a 5-minute major plus a misconduct in the second period. It was the turning point of the game as TEX scored THREE POWER PLAY GOALS during the one major penalty!
GAME #2: OHIO LEGENDS VS. NEW CASTLE DUCKS A big matchup between two of the top teams in the Campbell Conference. Ohio comes in with the league’s top offense. The Ducks have one of the top defenses. And Ohio has the top power play while New Castle has the league’s worst penalty-killing!

A crazy game as Ohio takes a 4-1 lead early in the second including two power-play goals. The Duck’s only goal was a shorthanded one by defensive defenseman Harold Snepts! Trailing 4-1, the Ducks score FIVE unanswered goals, including one on the power play as Andre Savard nets two and Rick Middleton two. Craig Ramsay, at 5:06, gets an insurance goal that proved to be the game-winner when Ray Bourque scored his 9th at 12:38 to make the final 6-5. The Ducks held off a furious Ohio push in the final minute, with the net empty, as Billy Smith stood tall in goal with 25 saves. Shots were even at 30 although Ohio had a 13-7 edge in the frantic third period.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD Savard 2G 1 A 3 PTS
2- NCD Middleton 2 G
3- OHIO- Gradin 1G 2 A 3 PTS

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks split the two home games and were lucky to get the one win, by a single goal, against a very tough Ohio team
Saint Clair Shores Saints
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Saints host Pittsburgh and Charlotte this week.
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH SPIRIT VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS There is one goal in the 1st and it’s scored by Mark Taylor and the Saints.

In the 2nd Gustafsson scores on a power play, then Bridgman scores a short-handed goal. It’s 3-0 SCS.

The shutout goes away as the Spirit gets a goal from Schliebener.

Late in the 2nd, Gustafsson scores his second.

SCS 4 Pittsburgh 1

1-Gustafsson
2-Bridgman
3-Taylor

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS Pretty crazy game. 5 goals are scored in the 1st period with Charlotte scoring 3 of them. Hachborn, Crawford, and Langevin score for the Dynamo. Lambert and Duchesne score their 4th goals for the Saints. After 1, it’s 3-2, Charlotte.

In the 2nd, the only goal is scored by Dale Hunter for the Dynamo.

Charlotte is up 4-2 after 2.

In the 3rd, Lambert scores his 5th for the Saints. SCS gets aggressive and takes some changes. With 31 seconds to go, Doug Wilson scores after the Saints pull their goalies. Then, miraculously, Federko scores with 8 seconds to go. SCS wins in a great comeback.

In the last 2 periods, the Saints outshoot the Dynamo, 38-9.

SCS 5 Charlotte 4

1-Lambert
2-Wilson
3-Federko

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Saints win both games against Pittsburgh and Charlotte.
Texas Brahmas
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two games deep in the heart of Texas this week as Charlotte and Portland come to town
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS A rather timid affair through 2 as Charlotte got 3 PP goals to take a 3-1 lead after 2. Things would heat up in the 3rd for Texas. Texas scores 3 to start the period to go up 4-3. Charlotte ties it 44 seconds after Texas had taken the lead and we are 4-4 at the 15:47 mark. Tucker completes his hat trick at 18:08 and gets his 4th with an empty net to complete the win for Texas.

3 Stars
TEX – Tucker 4G
Tex – Hughes 1G, 1A
Tex – Acton – 4A

GAME #2: PORTLAND SASQUATCH VS. TEXAS BRAHMAS First place Portland comes to town and things get wild. Portland starts with a goal on the first, answered by Texas for a 1-1 score after 1. Texas gets the lone goal in the 2nd for a 2-1 lead after 2. Pretty tame so far. Portland scores the next 4, including an ENG, to go up 5-2. Texas plays the last 2 minutes without a goalie, giving up the one goal mentioned above, but scoring 3 in the final 1:04 to tie the game at the end of regulation. Unfortunately, Hunter scores for Portland in OT for a 6-5 win.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Another 1-1 week with lots of penalties.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 home games against New Castle, Syracuse, Mackinac Island
GAME #1: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Norris Division-leading New Castle visits Smythe Division-leading Portland in an early battle of two contending teams

In the first period, Portland gets an early lead on a Ciccarelli (3) goal 11:53 into the period and adds to the lead with a Carbonneau (4) goal at 15:16

In the second period, New Castle responded with a goal from Williams (4) 4:27 into the period

Heading into the third with a 2-1 score Wayne Gretzky (19) was taken down on a breakaway, earning a penalty shot at the 15:19 mark which he converted for a 3-1 Portland lead. 47 seconds later Sutter (5) finds the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-1. The scoring barrage was not over though as Ciccarelli (5) gets a power-play goal with 1:09 remaining to give Portland a 5-1 win

Star #1 – Ciccarelli 2 goals
Star #2 – Lemelin 31 saves
Star #3 – Gretzky 1 goal, 1 assist

New Castle outshoots Portland 32-20 in the game. The game also featured 78 minutes of penalty time and 3 fights in a hotly contested battle

GAME #2: SYRACUSE BULLDOGS VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Syracuse visits Portland sporting a 7-4-1 record and an opportunity to gain ground on New Castle in the Norris Division

Portland once again jumps out to an early first-period lead as Hunter (5) gets an unassisted short-handed goal 12:35 into the period. Syracuse responds in the second period when Mullen (5) gets a short-handed goal of his own and Tonelli (4) finds the back of the net also to give Syracuse a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes

In the third period, Larouche (12) gets a power-play goal 4:56 into the period and a 3-1 lead but Ciccarelli (5) responds with his own power-play goal with 8:46 remaining after a 4 minute Larmer roughing penalty. Portland continued to put the pressure on but Broten (3) put the game away with a wrap-around goal and a 4-2 Bulldog win

Star #1 – Broten 1 goal 1 assist
Star #2 – Mullen 1 goal
Star #3 – Tonelli 1 goal

GAME #3: MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE VS. PORTLAND SASQUATCH Mackinac Island 8-4-0 visits Portland

This game was all Mackinac Island as they scored 56 seconds into the game on a MacLean (10) goal and never looked back. Propp (2) added another goal in the first period and Quinn (8), Propp (3), and Cote (1) all netted goals in the second period. To make it even worse Kurri (9) gets a goal in the third as the Moose blows out Portland 6-0

Star #1 – Melanson 21 saves
Star #2 – Propp 2 goals
Star #3 – Quinn 1 goal, 2 assists

Portland actually outshoots Mackinac Island 21-15 but the Moose scored on 6 of their 15 shots

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Facing 3 of the top teams in the league Portland starts out strong with a win against New Castle but then falls to Syracuse and Mackinac Island
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: After a very rocky start, the Charlotte MWOTHL entry (3-4-1 entering the week) was starting to gel entering its lone home game of the week against Michigan.
GAME #1: MICHIGAN STAGS VS. CHARLOTTE DYNAMO The Dynamo narrowly edged the Stags, 2-1, in a rare, tight-knit defensive battle considering the times and the offensive firepower on both squads. The goalies dominated this contest as Doug Keans (32 saves) bested a strong performance from Grant Fuhr, who surrendered just two goals against 26 saves. In fact, the game remained a scoreless duel entering the second, not broken until rookie sensation Pierre Turgeon scored his seventh goal of the young season on an assist from Mark Messier 2:44 into the period. The Dynamo answered with a goal from Dave Hunter followed by Anders Hedberg scoring on the power play midway through the third. The Stags valiantly fired 25 shots in the latter two periods but only had the Turgeon goal to show for it, as Keans, making a rare start, was spectacular and earned the first star honors. He thwarted Michigan rally efforts throughout the latter part of the game until Charlotte defender Joel Quenneville converted a clinching empty netter with 50 ticks left.

Three stars (all CHD)
1. Keans 32 saves
2. Hedberg, 1 G 2 points
3. Hunter 1 G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: After just one win in its first seven games, the Dynamo with the home win had pulled even at 4-4-3 pending the outcome of 3 road games. With its talented lines finally meshing and lots of defensive studs stepping up, Charlotte seeks to finally make noise in the Patrick division after a dreadful losing campaign a season ago.
Andes Mountaineers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Andes fans are excited to have two home games this week. First up is Chicago coming to town. The second game will be against Newcastle(my favorite beer and my favorite soccer team in the world).
GAME #1: CHICAGO UNDERGROUND VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Andes takes a lead into the 3rd period and again they find a way to lose it without much time left in the game. This time it was Virta with the dagger to the Mountaineers’ heart with only 3 minutes and 3 seconds left in the game. Chicago leaves town with a 5 – 4 win.
1st Star: Vaive(Chicago)
2nd Star: Savard(Chicago)
3rd Star: Bossy(Chicago)
GAME #2: NEW CASTLE DUCKS VS. ANDES MOUNTAINEERS Andes faces off with Norris leading New Castle. Andes scores first at the 7-minute mark but Newcastle ties it up 5 minutes later. With 20 seconds to go Andes decides to advance instead of dumping and heading to the locker room. It pays off as Naslund gets his 2nd goal of the period with 6 seconds to go. Third period Gilmour puts the Mountaineers up 3 – 1. With four minutes left in period #3, Newcastle pulls within 1. Andes fans have seen this before and are preparing for more heartache. Fortunately, a 2-minute tripping by Walter helps Andes keep possession of the puck for almost the remainder of the game. The home fans leave the arena in a happy mood.

1st Star: Naslund(Andes)
2nd Star: Potvin(New Castle)
3rd Star: Gilmour(Andes)

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Andes splits their 2 games this week. Sports is a weird game, we thought we could beat Chicago and would lose to Newcastle but it was the other way around.
Michigan Stags
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just a single home game on the docket, but one that will not soon be forgotten. Nick Polano’s charges held a 6-3 lead over CapJack with under 3 minutes to play and end up having to settle for a 6-6 sister-kisser!
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. MICHIGAN STAGS Trailing the Stags 6-3 with time winding down, Keith Crowder brings the Rangers within 2 at 17:38 with his 2nd of the night. Chico Resch leaves in favor of an extra skater and the Rangers strike TWICE; Silk [19:19] and Trottier [19:46] to even the score! FINAL SCORE: CapJack 6; Michigan 6. 3 stars: Crowder (CR) 2G+1A, Bullard (MS) 2G+1 A; Turgeon (MS) 2G.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Stags continue their horrible home ice record that now stands at 1-4-2. Goaltending continues to be a sore spot.
Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Patrick Division leaders, the CapJack Rangers, and Charlotte Dynamo come to northern Michigan and hope to bring the Moose down to earth.
GAME #1: CAPJACK RANGERS VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 3, Rangers 0 – 1st period sees the aggressive Moose spend 6 minutes on the penalty kill. All successful, but it really cuts down on offensive time, as they only manage 6 shots. But they make one count near the end of the period when Beers finds an opening. The Rangers manage 11 shots, but Melanson makes it look easy, stopping them all. 1-0 at the break.

2nd period sees the shots even out between the teams, but it’s the goalies who rule the ice, letting nothing into the nets. The Rangers kill off one minor. 1-0 heading to the last period.

3rd period sees the teams take turns on the PK, with nothing happening. Near the halfway mark of the period, MacLean and Leinonen scuffle and the ice opens up with some 4 on 4 action. Apparently, this is to the liking of the Moose, who score 2 quick goals, Kurri and Propp, to push the lead to 3. Later on, another skirmish, followed by a Crowder minor lets us see some 4 on 3 action, but nothing materializes because of it. The Moose go conservative the final 3 minutes to preserve the shutout for Melanson. 3-0

1st star – Melanson 21 save shutout.
2nd – Propp 1G 2pts
3rd – Kurri 1G

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE DYNAMO VS. MACKINAC ISLAND MOOSE Moose 4, Dynamo 2 – The Dynamo control play in the first period, racking up 17 SOG. Unfortunately, none get past Beaupre. The Moose get their first SOG and goal at the 8:37 mark, finding Kurri close in and open. The Moose kill off 2 minors late in the period and take the 1 goal lead to break.

2nd period sees the shots even out, 10-10, and penalties 2-2. Both teams are perfect on the PK, but the Dynamo goal is scored on a delayed penalty 6 on 5 situation. Hachborn with the goal. MacLean with one for the Moose. Off to break with the score 2-1 Moose.

Moose have the upper hand in the 3rd, racking up 17 SOG. 2 goals early in the period, Kurri and Quinn, lets the Moose go conservative early on and keep the puck in front of them most the period. Hunter gets a goal late. But the Moose once again are able to keep the puck in the offensive zone most of the final 3 minutes to keep the Dynamo frustrated. 4-2 final. 69% faceoff wins for the Moose.

1st star – Kurri 2g 3pts
2nd – MacLean 1G 3pts
3rd Quinn 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The defense comes up big this week, allowing only 2 goals in 2 games. Makes offensive play calling much easier when you can be patient. 3 goals by Kurri is a big factor.
Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Saints vs Drakes
GAME #1: SAINT CLAIR SHORES SAINTS VS. DALLAS DRAKES The Saints come out like Gorillas coming out of a cage. Jarvis and Wilson put the Saints up 2-0 6 minutes in. Ron Flockhart put the Drakes on the board but Tom McCarthy stays hot and gives the Saints a 3-1 lead after the first intermission. Mark Taylor and Tom McCarthy score again from a great feed from Bernie Federko to put the Saints up 5-1 and complete domination. The Drakes start the third-period down by 4 goals with Tom Barrasso making save after save, but Greg Gilbert scores for the Drakes as they start a barrage against the rookie goaltender. Andy Brickley and Marcel Dionne each pot a goal and the score is 5-4 at the 17:23 mark. At the 18-minute mark, Doug Wilson draws a hooking penalty and the Drakes take control in the Saints zone. Patrick Sundstrom sets Joey Mullen up on the doorstep and boom… Barrasso makes an incredible save, the Drakes get control and pass it around the zone, Mark Taylor and Ron Francis create a 2-1, Francis fakes the shot and drops it to trailer Jamie Macoun and he roofs the shorthanded goal to seal the 6-4 win for the Saints.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 game 1 loss
