|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||Two home games… the Playoffs are coming closer to reality. With such a slow start we never would have thought it possible, but alas here we are!|
|Ohio Legends @ Pittsburgh Spirit||The Spirit win convincingly 6-2. Ohio holds the Spirit to 1 SOG in the 3rd period, which Sittler scored on. But the Spirit and St. Croix hold off Ohio’s 3rd-period surge. Six different Pittsburgh players score on the evening.|
|North Carolina 89’ers @ Pittsburgh Spirit||The 89’ers get two short-handed goals in the game and are up 4-3 mid-way through the 3rd, but Pettersson scores twice in the final 10 minutes to give the Spirit the 5-4 come from behind win.|
|WEEKLY SUMMARY:||Playoffs looming, though this is not the same team that won back-to-back Cups. But in the playoffs, anything can happen!|
|New Castle Ducks|
|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||After being in and out of first place in the Norris all season long, the Ducks find themselves 6 points behind Dallas and 8 behind Chicago with the season winding down. The Ducks have three home games this week and need to win them all – and get some help – to get back into the Division race.|
|Ohio Legends @ New Castle Ducks||NCD 8 OHIO 3 The Legends got off to a strong start, taking a 3-2 lead after one period but the Ducks then scored SIX unanswered goals to win in a rout. Rick Middleton got a HAT TRICK plus two assists for a FIVE POINT game – as his third goal was NUMBER 50 on the season. Linemates Ryan Walter and Barry Pederson continued to dominate as well, with Walter notching 1 goal and 3 assists and Pederson doing the same. Walter also won 18 faceoffs. NCD outshot Ohio 46-31, including 20-5 in the third period when the Ducks scored FOUR goals. New Castle has now won 5 of 6 from Ohio this season.
|Charlotte Dynamo @ New Castle Ducks||NCD 5 CHD 5 Charlotte may be last in the Patrick Division but the Ducks would not know it as the Dynamo have been giving New Castle fits all year. Coming into the game, New Castle is 0-2-1 against Charlotte. And in a pattern that has been all too familiar this season, the Ducks blew a one-goal lead with 20 seconds remaining to come away with a disappointing tie.
Charlotte jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first only to see the Ducks tie it with one in the first and another in the second. After Charlotte took a 3-2 lead, Middleton did it again- scoring #51 – to tie the game at 3-3. Linemate Pederson made it 4-3 Ducks midway through the third but the Dynamo came right back as Anders Hedberg scored his second of the game and #17 on the year to tie it once again, 4-4. With a little under four minutes to go, Pederson scored his second of the night and 53rd of the year to put the Ducks up by one. The Ducks tightened their defense but with the Dynamo net empty, Glenn Anderson put an unassisted goal past Don Edwards with 20 seconds to go – giving Charlotte a terrific comeback and leaving the Ducks feeling crushedTHREE STARS:

|Mackinac Island Moose @ New Castle Ducks||MAC 5 NCD 5 In what could be a first-round playoff preview, these two teams that battled it out over seven games in last year’s playoffs, went at it once again. Coming into the game, NCD was 1-2-2 against the Moose this season. Things did not start well for the Ducks when Moose sharpshooter Stan Smyl scored at the FIFTEEN-second mark. For the fleet winger, it was his SIXTIETH goal of the year, third-best in the MWOTHL. New Castle bounced back with goals by Lindstrom and Statsny to make it 2-1 before Terrion tied it at 2-2 all in the first period. Then Barry Pederson scored #54 with under a minute left in the period and the teams went to intermission with NCD leading 3-2.
In the second, Pederson did it again, scoring #55 and opening a 4-2 lead for the Ducks. Jarri Kurri got #47 to make it 4-3 and then Marc Napier #33 as the Moose rallied to tie it at 4-4, in the second period. Then with 1:01 to go in the frame, Marc Tardif scored a power-play goal for the Ducks, putting them ahead 5-4 going to the final period.
In the third period, the Moose poured it on- as they outshot NCD 19-7 but Billy Smith was having quite a game in the Ducks net and Mac Island could not get the tying goal. Then in the final minute, with Moose goalie Meloche on the bench, Napier scored his second of the game – unassisted – to tie it with only 28 seconds to go. A dramatic comeback for the Moose as the Ducks suffer a crushing outcome in the final minute for the second game in a row.THREE STARS:
1- MAC Napier 2G 1 A
2- NCD Pederson 2G 1 A
3- MAC Kurri 1G 1 AMAC outshot NCD 45-23 as Billy Smith made 40 saves, many of them sensational. Bobby Clarke had 3 assists for the Ducks
|WEEKLY SUMMARY:||A disappointing week as the Ducks needed 6 points and got only 4, thanks to two last-minute goals in consecutive games. New Castle’s #1 line of Walter-Pederson-Middleton continues to dominate as they are averaging nearly 2 goals per game – but the Duck’s other lines have offered very little offense. And while the Ducks defense continues to be one of the league’s best, it has failed time and time again in the closing minutes of games. New Castle will have to tighten things up to have a chance in the playoffs|
|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||Down to 6 games, the Cardinals continue to chase a playoff spot!|
|Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Catoctin Cardinals||SCS 2 CAT 3
The Saints opened up the scoring but Catoctin adds 2 goals to take the lead. The Saints would tie it to keep things interesting. Catoctin scored what would be the game-winner in the second. What seemed like an exciting back and forth game became a figure skating contest in the 3rd as the Saints and Cardinals cruised to a 3-2 final.
|WEEKLY SUMMARY:||The Cardinals win their only home game and hope for good fortune on the road!|

|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||The Ohio Legends continue their limp home to the end of the 1982-83 MWOTHL season…|
|CapJack Rangers @ Ohio Legends||CAP 8, OHIO 8
Keith Crowder’s 40th goal of the season with five seconds remaining allowed CapJack to steal a victory from Ohio. The Legends were about to pull a major upset when Tim Kerr’s FOURTH goal of the night with 26 seconds remaining gave Ohio an 8-7 lead.
In one of the wildest games of the season, the Randers entered the third period with a 5-4 lead, and SEVEN third period goals were scored. Glen Currie (Ohio) and Bryan Trottier (Cap) were the multiple goal scorers in the contest. A total of a dozen players had multiple points in the highly offensive game.
|Charlestown Chiefs @ Ohio Legends||OHIO 3, CHAR 1
Bernie Federko scored a pair of goals and Ohio rallied from a first-period deficit to claim the victory.
Corrado Micalef stopped 16 shots to register his eighth win of the season.
|WEEKLY SUMMARY:||It’s a case of way too little, way too late for Ohio, as the Legends claim three standings points with just a week to go in the regular season.|
|Brooklyn Harbor Rats|
|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||Cardinals (for the 3rd time in 3 weeks) and Ducks come to visit Brooklyn as the Harbor Rats come into the week holding a slim one-point lead for the final playoff spot in the Campbell Conference.|
|Catoctin Cardinals @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats||Cards come in one point behind the Rats, although Brooklyn does have a game in hand. Catoctin has been torched for a pair of 7 goal Harbor Rats performances in their last 2 visits to Brooklyn. This is as huge as it gets.
Just 2:40 into the contest Anton Stastny nets his 30th of the season for the 1-0 Brooklyn lead. The Rats get a 5-minute man advantage when Mike Bullard is whistled for spearing and Darryl Sutter scores on the power play to put the Harbor Rats in front 2-0.
In the 2nd period, Rick Kehoe buries his 47th of the year on a wraparound for the Cardinals to make it a one-goal game. But just :90 seconds later Sutter gets his 2nd goal of the game to put Brooklyn up 2, then he completes the hat trick later in the period to send the Rats into the final twenty with a 3 goal lead.
Catoctin comes hard in the 3rd period and Cloutier stands tall for the first 15 minutes, then Kevin LaVallee scores to draw the Cardinals within 2. Just :90 seconds later Doug Smail buries one to move the visitors within one and there’s still 3 and a half minutes to play!
Somehow Cloutier makes all the saves, including about 5 while facing the extra attacker and the Harbor Rats hang on for the 4-3 win a thriller!
|New Castle Ducks @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats||The Ducks get a pair of goals from Marion Stastny and a pair of goals from Rick Middleton and Billy Smith makes save after save after save after save for the 4-1 New Castle win.|
|WEEKLY SUMMARY:||A split at home but an all-important 2 points against one of the teams that are chasing us.|
|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||Last place Syracuse and first place Mackinac Island pay a visit to the land of Bluebonnets. Texas is looking to finish strong after a very rough year.|
|Syracuse Bulldogs||Two last-place teams with terrible goalies hook up in what should be a high-scoring affair. Except, it isn’t. The teams exchanged goals in the first as Nilsson gets his 50th for Texas and Holmgren gets the answer. Bellows scores for Syracuse in the 2nd and they take a 2-1 lead into the 2nd intermission. Ruotsalainen ties the game in the 3rd and Boutette gives Texas the lead with 1:16 left in the game. Syracuse can’t get the tying goal with the goalie pulled and Texas holds on for a 3-2 win.

|Mackinac Island Moose||Mackinac comes into town and things quickly get back to normal defensively as they score 35 seconds in for a 1-0 lead. The resilient Brahmas strike back, scoring twice to go up 2-1. The powerful Mackinac squad scored twice 31 seconds apart to go into the 1st intermission with a 3-2 lead. The Moose start the scoring in the 2nd on a PP goal for a 4-2 lead. The teams exchange goals 41 seconds apart late in the 2nd and the period ends with a 5-3 Moose lead. The Brahmas then decide to start playing defense. Texas scores the next 4, and the only 4 of the 3rd, to take the game 7-5.

|Mackinac Island Moose|
|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||Two home games this week. Moose looks to crack the 50-win mark against either Charlotte or Catoctin.|
|Charlotte Dynamo @ Mackinac Island Moose||Dynamo 6, Moose 3 – Moose take advantage of an early Moller penalty to get a powerplay goal from Park and take the lead. That must have pissed off the visitors, as they roar back and pour in 4 goals then the next 10 minutes. Ihnacak 2, Hunter, and Anderson make Meloche look silly in goal while simultaneously making the Moose feel like little leaguers. It’s 4-1 after the first.
2nd period the Moose stop the bleeding and hold the Dynamo scoreless, but the Dynamo are equally up to the task and do the same. Moose kill 3 penalties and the Dynamo kill 2.
3rd period it looks like a nice comeback by the Moose as goals by Smyl and Dunlop cut the lead to 1 with 10 minutes to go. The offense stalls and then a Moose penalty takes even more momentum away. More aggressive play down the wire until a pulled goalie at the 2-minute mark leads to 2 empty netters by Anderson and Hawerchuk to make this one look worse than it really was.
1st star – Anderson 2G 3pts
|Catoctin Cardinals @ Mackinac Island Moose||Moose 7, Cards 2 – A very angry Moose squad shows up and puts this game to bed in the first period, scoring 5 unanswered goals. Smyl, Propp, Napier, MacLean, and Ruskowski pour in 5 goals in 7 minutes of the first period.
2nd period sees things slow down, but the Cardinals still cannot get one by Melanson. Meanwhile, Dunlop and Propp add more goals, making it 7-0 after 2.
3rd period sees the Cardinals crank up everything and stop the Moose. Meanwhile, the visitors get 2 late goals from Smail to avoid the shutout.

|WEEKLY SUMMARY:||Two ties – the way things have been going, we’ll take it.|
|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||Playoffs are looming and the Rangers have been sputtering this week. Already two games on the road under their belts – 2 ties – and now they face Dallas at home and have one more game this week on the road (and a hot Pittsburgh team melting the ice wherever they go). Fun finish to the year.|
|Dallas Drakes @ CapJack Rangers||A scoreless 1st period – WHAT? But then Dallas takes advantage of a Cloutier tripping penalty at the beginning of period 2 and we have a score as Secord puts the Drakes up 1-0 3 minutes into period 2. Three minutes later Don Maloney scores for the Rangers to even the score but Dallas goes on a scoring binge with Duguay, Woods, and Secord (2nd PP goal) all finding the net in the 2nd, and Dallas is pounding CapJack 4-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.
Cloutier goes off 7 minutes into the 3rd for tripping AGAIN – but this time it’s Crowder scoring, getting the SH goal for the Rangers to cut it to 4-2. But Hanlon was standing tough and so was the Drakes defense – limiting the Rangers to 8 shots on goal in the 3rd. With 6 to go, however, Mike Allison gets a PP goal to bring the Rangers within 1. A minute later Ray Allison scores a game-tying goal. A minute and a half later, Secord goes off for tripping and Crowder scores his 2nd of the game and the Rangers have their 1st lead of the game, 5-4. Final minutes and now Dallas is looking for a goal and they pull Hanlon and muscle their way into the Rangers zone and set up two scoring chances that are rebuffed and then the Rangers can a big faceoff, control the puck down the ice, and Cochrane is set up nicely for the EN goal and the game ends with the Rangers winning 6-4 (after a 5 goal 3rd period to pull it off!).
|WEEKLY SUMMARY:||Well, it wasn’t pretty until it was and the Rangers finally got a win at home – vacant lately. With 1 week to go, the Patrick Division is up for grabs between the Rangers and the Spirit!|
|Saint Clair Shores Saints|
|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||St. Clair Shores hosts Texas this week.|
|Texas Brahmas @ Saint Clair Shores Saints||The Saints have started to play well of late. Well, this was a different outcome. The Brahmas walk all over the Saints. Highlights include: Andrreychuk 2 goals, Poddubny 2 goals, and Nilsson scores no. 50.
The Saints get a goal by Ron Wilson late in the 2nd. Otherwise, this was one-sided.
Texas 8 SCS 1
|WEEKLY SUMMARY:||Texas stomps the Saints, 8-1.|
|WEEKLY PREVIEW:||The Dynamo, which has salted away the basement spot in the Patrick Division, plays out the string during its latest home game against the Dallas Drakes.|
|Dallas Drakes @ Charlotte Dynamo||The Dynamo showed signs of competitiveness against a Drakes team that is destined for the playoffs. In a well-played game with good goaltending and not too many penalties, the two teams dueled to a 3-3 tie.
Dallas rallied from a 3-1 deficit to salvage a point. Ken Linseman scored 18:24 into the second to narrow the gap 3-2. Al Secord, who assisted on the Linseman tally got the equalizer 7:11 in the third period on the powerplay.
Notables: Dallas’ Glen Hanlon recorded 34 saves while Charlotte’s Andy Moog finished with 31
|WEEKLY SUMMARY:||Victory continues to evade Charlotte late in the season and the snakebit Dynamo has settled for 13 ties to this point. Ah, the great old John Ziegler years.|
