Chicago Underground
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago with 3 games on home ice at the Capone Center. Points this week are at an all-time high a the battle for the Division is wide open.
Dallas Drakes @ Chicago Underground A scheduling snafu pushed this game 1 day later in the schedule. You’d think Al Capone himself was at the Capone Center for this one. It was all top hats and formal dress night & an old fashion shootout with very little defense played. Dallas held a 6-5 lead at the end of two, but the scoring wasn’t done just yet. Chicago opened up with 4 – 3rd Period Goals & took home this one with Tommy Gun-style scoring. Both teams pulled goalies in this one as the scoring was unreal.

Final Score: Chicago 9 – Dallas 7

Labatts 3-Star Selection:
Star 1: CHI – Peter Stastny 2G, 4Pts
Star 2: CHI – Denis Savard 2G, 4 Pts
Star 3: DAL – Al Secord 3G, 4 Pts

Game Winner: – Denis Savard

Notable:
DAL – Al Secord Hat Trick, Joe Mullen 3 Assists
CHI – Mike Bossy 3 Assists

Ohio Legends @ Chicago Underground After allowing a goal early on in the 1st & a tirade from Head Coach Stray Corrado, Chicago went from playing no defense in the game against Dallas to shutting the doors down at the Capone Center and locking Ohio out of the scoring the rest of the way. “We’re better on defense than we were in that Dallas game.” said Corrado.

Final Score: Chicago 3 – Ohio 1

Labatts 3-Star Selection:
Star 1: CHI – John Anderson 2G
Star 2: CHI – Mike Blaisdell 1G
Star 3: OHI – Normand Rochefort 1G

Game Winner: – John Anderson

Notable:
OHI – None
CHI – None

North Carolina 89’ers @ Chicago Underground Chicago was back at it again with another home game at the Capone Center. They also played defense as they had little in the lines of offense, scoring only twice in the contest. However, it is nice when the defense shows up & allows only 1. Chicago wins a tight one.

Final Score: Chicago 2 – North Carolina 1

Labatts 3-Star Selection:
Star 1: CHI – Peter McNab 1G, 2 Pts
Star 2: CHI – Mike Blaisdell 1G
Star 3: CHI – Tom Roulston 2A

Game Winner: – Peter McNab

Notable:

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Chicago grabs all 6 available Points at home this week. A road win at Dallas would provide Chicago with the best week in franchise history.
New Castle Ducks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ducks continue to battle for first place with Chicago and Dallas. The Underground put pressure on New Castle as the boys from Chicago has already won three out of three at home this week to jump over the Ducks into first place in the Norris Division. New Castle plays Syracuse and Mackinac Island at home this week. The game against MAC is a potential playoff preview between two teams who battled it out in last year’s playoffs when the Ducks beat the Moose in six games. This year’s Moose have by far and away the best record in the MWOTHL and lead the league in both offense and defense. Can the Ducks slow them down?
Syracuse Bulldogs @ New Castle Ducks NCD 5 SYR 0 Ducks #2 Goalie Don Edwards continues his outstanding play as he gets his third shutout of the season to tie for the league lead. After a scoreless first period, New Castle took a 1-0 lead on Rick Middleton’s 42nd of the year at 2: 11 of the second period. The rest of the period was scoreless and the teams went to the locker room with NCD ahead 1-0. Early in the third period, Marc Tardif scored for the Ducks to make it 2-0. Then came the turning point of the game – with the Ducks on a power play – Syracuse’s Curt Fraser got a breakaway and was pulled down from behind by Halward – A PENALTY SHOT was awarded. Edwards stopped Fraser and the score remained 2-0. It was a back-breaking play as 30 seconds later the Ducks scored on the power play as Barry Pederson registered # 49.

THREE STARS:
1- NCD – Edwards 25 saves
2- NCD – Middleton 2 Goals
3- NCD- Tardif 2 Goals

Syracuse’s Bob Lorimer blocked 5 shots. Reggie Leach and Curt Fraser each had 4 hits. Fraser drew 4 penalties for 8 minutes. Ducks defensemen Halward and McCrimmon each had 4 hits as well

The Ducks are now 5-1-2 against Syracuse this season

Mackinac Island Moose @ New Castle Ducks MAC 2 NCD 0 The Ducks come into this game 1-0-2 against the Moose. New Castle is the only team the Moose have not beaten this season. The first three games between the two squads were high-scoring affairs with the first two ending in 5-5 ties and the Ducks winning the most recent battle 6-5. Today was very different as Gilles Meloche recorded a shutout in a tight-checking low scoring game. It was the net minder’s third shutout of the year, tying him for the league lead.

MAC got the only goal they needed at 9:51 of the first when Steve Tambellini put one past Billy Smith. The game remained 1-0 until early in the third when the Moose’s league-best power play struck with Stan Smyl scoring his 52nd goal of the year (15th on the PP). Mackinac Island’s impressive defense then took over, holding NCD to only six shots in the third period. For the game, NCD outshot MAC 27-18.

THREE STARS:

1- MAC Meloche 27 saves
2- MAC – Smyl 1 G
3- MAC – Tambellini 1 G

Moose defenseman Brian Engblom had FIVE blocked shots

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ducks split their two home games and come away with 2 points. They now trail Chicago 79-78 in the battle for the Norris Division title, with both teams having played 65 games. Dallas is in the thick of the race as the Drakes have 73 points but with three games in hand. Dallas hosts Chicago later this week in a very big contest.
CapJack Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers have 1 home game and 2 roadies this week. We entertain the Saints at the Round Garden…
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ CapJack Rangers A pretty even 1st period. McClanahan gets the lone Saints goal early and Crowder ties it up for CapJack on a PP goal Doug Wilson does the tomahawk chop on an unsuspecting Ranger – and gets sent to the penalty box for it.

2nd PERIOD sees the Rangers take charge on goals by DeBlois, Neufeld, and another PP goal by Crowder (this time it was Morrow -hooking- who went off for Saint Clair Shores). In the midst of the 3 Rangers goals, Francis puts one in for the Saints making it 4-2 after 2. Saint Clair Shores was really pouring it on – 16 shots at Resch, and their attacking will continue in the 3rd…

3rd PERIOD – Saints are really coming after the Rangers – winning 56+% of the face-offs and it begins to pay off. 2 1/2 minutes in, Taylor scores, then when Kontos goes off for high sticking for the Rangers, Huddy, and the Saints capitalize with a PP goal to tie it up with 6 1/2 minutes to go. And then it was try and stop, try and be stopped, until in the final minute, DeBlois digs one out of the Saints corner, to Maloney, to Cochran, to DeBlois – he shoots and blows it by Liut for what turns out to be the game-winner, 5-4 CapJack.
STARS: (all Cap)
1. DeBlois 2 goals
2. Crowder 2 goals
3. Neufeld 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 game, 1 squeaky win – but it’s 2 points and we’re fine with that.
Pittsburgh Spirit
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Spirit are hanging on to their playoff hopes by hosting the other Niespodzianski this week as Charlestown comes home to the ‘Burgh to face off with the better-looking brother. (I said what I said)
Charlestown Chiefs @ Pittsburgh Spirit The Spirit waste no time as former Chief, Gare (7) and Sittler (30) score 23 seconds apart to make it 2-0.

The Chiefs get 2 back in 1:03 as McKegney (17) and Bourque (13) tie it up 2-2!

But the Spirit wasn’t done in the 1st… as they tack on two more from Steen (22) and Barber (20) to make it 4-2.

2nd Period CHA gets one back as Bourque (14) scores his 2nd of the game, 4-3 Spirit.

Another former Chief, Paiement (11) makes it 5-2.

3rd period Charlestown outshoots the Spirit 9-6, but the Spirit get two more on the bookends of the period. Sittler (31) with his 2nd of the game at the :26 mark, and then at 19:59 Crowder (14) gets the buzzer-beater to send the crowd home happy as the Good Guy, and better-looking brother, win 7-3 to gain in the standings for the final playoff spot.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The recap said it all. Here is the headline in the paper “Better Looking Brother Beats the Other, Eyes Playoffs.”
Syracuse Bulldogs
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One home game Saint Claire Shores comes to town
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Syracuse Bulldogs Saints 7-4

WEEKLY SUMMARY: One home game one loss
Ohio Legends
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Ohio Legends have just one game this week, as the Saint Clair Shores Saints come to town. The bottom feeders in the Adams Division square off with…..really nothing at stake.
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Ohio Legends SCS 6, OHIO 2

Saint Clair Shores was zero-for-31 on the power play in the seven games prior to this and had not had a three power-play goal game since November 4 (53 games ago at Catoctin), but that all changed in this contest. The Saint went three-for-eight on the surging power play and buried Ohio.

Three third-period goals (two of them on the man-advantage) helped Saint Clair Shores pull away for the win. Mike McDougal led the attack with two goals and Doug Wilson had a goal and two assists for three points for the winners. Mike Liut stopped 21 to collect the win, while Corrado Micalef turned away 24 in the losing effort.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Ohio Legends are making everyone look good down the stretch. When’s the draft?!?!
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers, Dynamo, and Drakes all come to Brooklyn this week
CapJack Rangers A pair of Trottier goals have the Rangers up 3-2 late in the second before Gustafsson ties it up with 2:00 minutes left before the second intermission. On their 5th power play of the night, Reinhart snaps the tie for Brooklyn midway through the final frame. But the story of this season has been the Rat’s inability to stop the tying goal with the extra attacker on so…….Don Maloney nets the tying goal for CapJack in the final minute of play to salvage a road point for the Rangers, 4-4 final.
Charlotte Dynamo Brooklyn again nets a pair of power-play scores, pulling away from the Dynamo with a 4 goal third period that saw the home ice littered with hats when Bengt-Ake Gustafsson got his 3rd goal of the game with 3 minutes remaining. Final score: Rats 6, Dynamo 2.
Dallas Drakes The Drakes have not lost to Brooklyn in 3 previous meetings but Christian and Behn Wilson get the home team in front 2-0 after one period of play. Mike Ramsey’s short-handed goal in the second period is countered by Mike Gartner’s power-play goal seconds later but with :90 seconds left in the period John Paul Kelly draws the Drakes within a goal. Because it’s Brooklyn you can see the tying goal coming from a mile away and Dennis Maruk nets that tying score for Dallas just 5 minutes into the final period. Maybe that was for the best as neither team could find the back of the net in the final 15 minutes and this one ends in a 3-3 tie
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 4 points out of 3 home games and the trend of allowing the late tying goal continues…..
Catoctin Cardinals
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Catoctin faceoffs against Pittsburgh in a light home week.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Catoctin Cardinals PIT 8 CAT 8
Pretty sure the goalies forgot to show up.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: A tie at home, something, but not much in a division race.
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Entering its lone home game versus Pittsburgh this week, the lowly Charlotte Dynamo was suffering through a Ralph Kruegeresh type slump, with two wins in its last 17 games. That is nearly a quarter of a season of misery ladies and gentlemen.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Charlotte Dynamo And…the slide continues. Against the Spirit, the Dynamo surrendered leads of 2-0 and 4-1 en route to a 6-4 defeat. The Dynamo trailed following a John Van Boxmeer goal 30 seconds in and despite outshooting the Spirit a whopping 48-26, Charlotte ultimately could never recover from that immediate deficit.

Pittsburgh’s top two draft picks played a role in this win, with Pelle Lindbergh (second round) turning away 44 shots and first-rounder Steve Larmer (1 G 2 assists) earning third-star selection.

In the losing effort, Glenn Anderson was the first star with a pair of goals; the latter came halfway through the third period and had narrowed the Charlotte margin to 5-4, but a goal by the Spirit’s Louis Sleigher with 4:05 left in the game sealed the win.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte now has two wins in its last 18. This team only needs help at goalie, defense, and upfront to become semi-competitive.
Portland Sasquatch
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Portland, with a 4 point lead in the Smythe Division, hosts the top team in the league in Mackinac Island and the second-best team in CapJack

Dallas Drakes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Dallas plays 3
Chicago Underground @ Dallas Drakes Tight game in Dallas…..Clark Gillies starts off the scoring for the Underground with a great feed from Serge Savard to Chicago the lead and that is where it stood at the end of 1. Ken Linseman tied the game at 1 to end the second period after great saves from Glen Hanlon and Pete Peeters. Lindsay Carson puts the Southsiders up 2-1 and it stayed that way until late in the 3rd when Ken Liseman redirected a Darren Veitch shot past Peeters. Less than 2 minutes later John Anderson put Chicago up 3-2 but less than 35 seconds later Ken Linseman completed the hat trick for the kissing of the sister.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Dallas Drakes The Drakes jump all over the Bulldog’s early Rob Ramage and Craig Hartsburg both score for the Drakes. Al Secord had an open net but Greg Millen made a spectacular save to keep the spread to 2 goals and Neal Broten cashed in moments later to cut the lead to 2-1. Two minutes later though, Secord finished it off this time and the Drakes went into the first intermission leading 3-1. Brian Bellows put his 49th goal of the season in to cut the lead to 3-2 to end the second. The Bulldogs came out firing and Reed Larson beat Don Beaupre to tie the score where it stayed until late in the third. Paul Baxter put a rocket through a screen and the Drakes went home 4-3 victors.
