CapJack Rangers
Weekly Preview: Rangers continue to try to get a bit more in their quest to win the pathetic division and it’s getting tougher now that Charlotte has come to play. But we will keep trying. Vermont and Philadelphia invade this week – and the fumigation squad is set to make a major appearance after the Firebirds leave…
Vermont Foresters @ CapJack Rangers Lumbering their way to the Round Garden, the always tough on the Rangers Vermont Foresters seemed to have their dull axes and saws with them this week. They did outshoot the Rangers (28-23) and they had 42 PIM to 23 for Rangers – but that was pretty much the bulk of their victories. The Rangers managed 4 goals to 1 for Vermont – and that’s what counts.
Cloutier scores in the 1st, Ramsay ties it in the 2nd then Lapointe gets the game-winner midway in the 2nd (PP goal). Then Mulvey and McMillan score in the 3rd. And all 3 of the new Rangers contributed assists.
STARS: (all CAP)
1. MacMillan 1 goal, 1 assist
2. Dion 27 saves
3. Lapointe 1 goal
Vermont’s hunter did earn 15 PIM
Philadelphia Firebirds @ CapJack Rangers Well if you want any trophies, you have to beat the Firebirds (and fumigate). Rangers score 4 goals again – but Philadelphia scores 4 in the 2nd alone on their way to 7. 3 More in the 3rd. And to make things worse, the Firebirds score 4 PP goals – Rangers only half that with 2. 73 SOGS (106 total attempts) in a game that looked like it could have been an all-star game (read that little defense). The only bright spot was CapJack did get the #1 star (Trottier).
In this wild game, no goals were scored in the 1st.
2nd Period 4 goals were scored in the 1st 7 minutes (2 by each team). Lafluer, Trottier, Cloutier get the 3 Rangers goals. Linseman, Dionne, Tonelli, and Secord get the Firebirds red lights.
3rd Period – up 4-3, the Firebirds get 2 goals in the opening 3 minutes to pretty much make it a blow out. The 3 Firebird goals in the 3rd came from Ruff, Linseman, and Hartsburg (a PP goal with a minute and a half to go). Ranger’s lone goal was from Trottier.
STARS
1. CAP – Trottier 2 goals, 2 assists
2. PHI – Linseman 2 goals
3. PHI – Dione 1 goal, 2 assists
Risto got 3 assists against Philly!!! Wamsley gives up 4 goals but stops 36 shots. Rangers looked like the goalies were missing after the 1st.
Weekly Summary: 2 at home, 1 win, 1 mess (those stinking Firebirds ——–)

New Castle Ducks
Weekly Preview: The Ducks have two home games this week both against Adams Division teams. New Castle hosts St. Clair Shores, a last-place team that has played the Ducks tough this season. Then, the Ducks take on the powerful Mackinac Island Moose who are first in the Adams and fighting the Ducks for playoff position.
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ New Castle Ducks SCS 4 NEW 3
In a bit of an upset, the Saints get TWO SHORTHANDED goals and beat the Ducks at the Duck Pond. Bill Clement and Ron Delorme got the shorthanded goals, both unassisted, as SCS took a 2-1 lead in the second period. A goal by Norm Dupont later in the period made it 3-1 Saints after two.
In the third period, New Castle cut the lead to one when Marian Stastny scored his 14th of the year at 1:17 of the period. When defenseman Doug Wilson scored his 24th for SCS at 11:07 it looked like it was all over as the Saints now had a commanding 4-2 lead. But 35 seconds after Wilson’s goal, Barry Pederson scored his second of the game and 39th of the season to make it 4-3. The Ducks pressed the rest of the way but could not beat Mike Liut as St. Clair Shores held on for the 4-3 win.
St Clair Shores has now beaten New Castle 2 of 3 this season.THREE STARS:
1- NEW Barry Pederson 2 G
2- SCS Doug Wilson 1G
3- SCS Ron Delorme 1 G (SHG)Ken Morrow (SCS) had 5 hits but also 4 giveaways
Liut made 27 saves for SCS. Michel “Bunny” Larocque lost for only the 4th time this season (16-4-3)
Mackinac Island Moose @ New Castle Ducks MAC 4 NEW 3
The Moose score THREE unanswered goals in the third period to get a huge comeback win against the Ducks. After Mark Napier scored on the power play to give MAC a 1-0 first period lead, the Ducks appeared to take control of the game as Tony Currie scored one and superstar Barry Pederson two (41 now on the season) including one on the power play – as New Castle took a 3-1 lead to the third period.
In the third, at the 19 SECOND mark, Brian Propp scored for the Moose to make it 3-2. Then at 12:26 Napier scored his second of the game and 34th of the season to tie it! It looked like things would end that way when suddenly Jacques Richard scored his FIRST goal of the year for MAC with 1:34 remaining, assisted by Mike Zuke and Brad Park. The Moose and goalie Rollie Melanson held on to get the exciting win.THREE STARS:
1- MAC Mark Napier 2G
2- NEW Barry Pederson 2G
3- MAC Jacques Richard 1 GLarocque had 34 saves but lost for the second straight game (16-5-3). Melanson improves to 13-6-3 for the Moose
MAC has beaten NEW 2 of 3 this season
Weekly Summary: A very disappointing week for the Ducks as they drop both home games. NEW CASTLE remains in second place in the Norris Division, trailing Philadelphia. While the Ducks have had the second-best record in the MWOTHL most of the season, the loss to the Moose puts Mackinac Island in a position to move ahead of New Castle by the end of this week.
Philadelphia Firebirds
Weekly Preview: Philly takes on the TWO TIME STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS as Pittsburgh retools, of course, if you can wait the 3 weeks response time to make a trade…shout out to CapJack!
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Philadelphia Firebirds Crazy Game!

Weekly Summary: A win over an overmatched opponent
Ohio Legends
Weekly Preview: The Legends welcomes two teams this week…..and tolerate Philadelphia. Two teams roll in as playoff contenders and the other is like the Legends–looking toward next year.
Philadelphia Firebirds@ Ohio Legends The Philadelphia Firebirds come to town as the most hated team in the MWOTHL and it doesn’t take long to figure out why. Six first period fights, all in a two-minute span set the tone for this one…..

OHIO 5, PHILADELPHIA 3

Jordy Douglas nets the game-winner midway through the third and John Anderson added the insurance goal about a minute later to close out the scoring in this one. Al Secord potted a pair of goals for Philadelphia.

The fans at Legends Arena had a little something to cheer in the Firebird’s first visit to the Buckeye State since eliminating Ohio in the postseason last year.

Glen Hanlon stopped 34 shots in the win, while Rick Wamsley took the loss with 25 saves. Ohio scored on its only power-play chance and scored a shorthanded marker as well. Philadelphia went zero-for-two on the power play–which marked the first game this season that Ohio had not allowed a man-advantage goal (and probably the first since the Coolidge Administration).

Syracuse Bulldogs @ Ohio Legends SYRACUSE 5, OHIO 3

The Bulldogs sweep the momentum of the big Philadelphia win right out the door. Syracuse scored three in the first and build a 4-0 edge early in the second and cruised home.

Ivan Boldirev led the offense for Syracuse with a pair of goals, while Bengt Lundholm handed out three assists.

The Bulldogs unleashed a two-for-five power-play attack (that’s more like the Ohio special teams we know!), while the Legends were one-for-three with the man-advantage. Don Edwards was the hero in goal with 33 saves, while Gilles Gilbert stopped 13.

Charlestown Chiefs @ Ohio Legends CHARLESTOWN 7, OHIO 5

Another one that was over early, as Charlestown sprinted to a 3-0 edge in the first and led 6-1 after two.

Paul Coffey played like a legend in this one, registering three goals and an assist for the Chiefs. Guy Chouinard chipped in a pair of goals to make a winner of Chico Resch (42 saves). Glen Hanlon started and lost, the group effort in goal with twelve saves.

Mark Pavlich had a pair of goals for Ohio in the defeat.

Weekly Summary: Ohio wins one of three on the week and gets the big win against Philadelphia. It was clear that the victory over the Firebirds put a hangover on the club for the rest of the week. The key will be to try to win more consistently with a club that may be moving pieces at the trade deadline.
Silk City Whales
Weekly Preview: Tough week ahead for the Whales, who host tough CapJack and North Carolina this week.
CapJack Rangers @ Silk City Whales Bob MacMillan scores two goals, the second with eight seconds remaining the third period to give the Rangers a 2-2 tie at Silk City. The Whales had built a lead on second-period goals by bottom-six forwards Anders Kallur and Kevin LaVallee, but MacMillian had late lightning in both the second and third periods.

Brooklyn Harbor Rats
Weekly Preview: Charlestown and New Castle come to visit Brooklyn this week.
Charlestown Chiefs @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Mike Gartner gets the Rats on the board just 1:15 into the game. Lanny McDonald’s power-play goal evens things for the Chiefs in the 2nd, but just:30 seconds later, Darryl Sutter puts Brooklyn back in front. To stay as Andre Dupont gets his first of the season just before the second intermission and Ron Low makes 18 saves in the 2nd period, and another 18 in the 3rd, for 48 saves total to win the game, 4-2 Harbor Rats.
New Castle Ducks @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Rats grab a quick 2-0 lead and then this game turns around when the Ducks put up a 6 goal-second period and win going away, 7-3 the final. Rats horrible special teams went 1 for 8 on the power play, while the Ducks went 3 for 5 and got a shorty in the 3rd. Yvon Lambert had 2 goals for New Castle, while Bobby Clarke added 3 assists.
Weekly Summary: one win and one loss. the loss exposing our dreadful power play.
Charlestown Chiefs
Weekly Preview: One home game this week – against first-place Mackinac Island.
Mackinac Island Moose @ Charlestown Chiefs It’s a barn-burner – the teams combine for only 44 shots on goal, but 13 of them go in!

Meloche and Resch definitely need some Anacin after this one.

Fortunately for the home team, they pot 2 3rd period goals to turn a 5-5 tie into a 7-5 lead… but then Napier (34) scores at 9:24 of the 3rd to make it 7-6. The Chiefs hold on and secure the win on home ice.

Dunlop gets a hat trick in the Reggie Dunlop Beer Garden, so there’s something poetic about that.

The Charlestown newcomers pay big dividends – Chouinard collects 3 assists, Houle gets a helper on the first goal of the game, and Resch collects his first home win for his new team.

Weekly Summary: We had to work for it, but we collect a big W in our only home game this series.
Chicago Underground
Weekly Preview: Two home games for a team thinking about the golf course already.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Chicago Underground Up 2-0 heading into the 3rd Period, Bobby Smith goes En-Fuego & lights the lamp 3 times with a natural Hat-Trick in just under 5-minutes 30 seconds. But Chicago gets 2 late goals in the last 1:45 and comes back for the win.

Mackinac Island Moose
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The 2 time Cup Champions come to the Island for their visit this season. The Moose play their first week with new team member Stan Smyl, “The Steamer”, hoping to key a push to the cup.

Pittsburgh Spirit @ Mackinac Island Moose

Moose 5, Spirit 4 –

1st period, 16 combined shots on goal, no scores, Pitt kills one penalty and Melnyk skirmishes with Lysiak. 0-0 going to intermission.

2nd period, more of the same. Melnyk and Engblom, then Patey and Smyl scuffle, finally Steen gets called for being a bad boy, and the home team breaks the scoreless tie with a goal from Napier. We go to intermission 1-0 Moose.

(read period 3 real real fast, cause that’s how it went down. unless you are from Vermont because I don’t want to see you hurt yourself. (actually, it would be funny as hell to watch that happen).)

Period 3 – Theberge deflects one in, only to see Barber answer 30 seconds later to make it 2-1. Then the Spirit conjures up visions of the past 2 seasons when they rattle off 2 quick goals by Patey and MacLeish to rip the lead away from the Moose, 3-2. And just when the Moose think the table is turning with a 5-minute elbowing call on Pettersson, the Spirit thwart all attempts to even the score, and then just as the 5 minutes is close to expiring, pour a little salt in the wound with a shorty by Paiement to make it 4-2 with 10 minutes to go. But with just seconds left on the Paiement penalty, a glimmer of light from the heavens appears in the form of a deflection goal by Napier. And now with 11 minutes elapsed in the 3rd, and 6 goals tallied, it’s on..4-3… The home teams tries and tries to even the score, but cannot get anything to materialize until, like Superman emerging from the phone booth, The Steamer slams the equalizer in, 4-4, with just under 5 minutes to go, and then again, on minute later, The Steamer blasts in the game-winner at the 4 minutes mark, and after that, Gilles Meloche comes out of his coma to hold the Spirit scoreless and preserve the win.

1st star – Stan Smyl 2G (actually the game gave it to Napier, but screw that)
2nd – Napier 2G
3rd – MacLeish 1G 2pts.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Nifty come from behind win over the defending champs, with newcomer Stan Smyl making all the difference in the world with the game-tying and game-winning goals.

Chicago Underground @ Delray Alpha Chicago 3 – Delray 4

New Castle @ Delray Alpha:  – Delray 2

Star 3 – Vetich 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Delray goes 1-1-1 in the 3 game set
Charlotte Dynamo
WEEKLY PREVIEW: As the second half of the 81-82 season commences, Charlotte, despite its basement standing, entered the week just 10 points out of the top spot in the Patrick, where everyone holds a losing record. It hosted Syracuse and North Carolina in its latest home games — sounds like an ACC style week to me!
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Charlotte Dynamo In a heart-breaker, two late third-period goals off the stick of the Bulldogs’ Ivan Boldirev lifts Syracuse to a 6-5 win over the Dynamo. Boldirev ties the game at 5-5 with 7:48 to play in the back and forth affair, then scores the game-winner three minutes later, with five minutes remaining. Mike Rogers scores two goals for Charlotte, just his sixth and seventh of the year, in the wasted effort.
North Carolina 89’ers @ Charlotte Dynamo In the league’s Tar Heel showcase (Charlotte is considering a relocation to other regions next season for a more captive fan base), the 89ers capitalize off three special-teams goals in the first to seize a 3-0 lead, en route to an eventual 5-2 victory. Dave Lumley scores two power-play goals in the first period for North Carolina, and Tiger Williams bites Charlotte with a short-handed goal that gave the 89ers a 2-0 lead six minutes into the contest (he also finished with a typical three-hit night he is known for).
WEEKLY SUMMARY: In losing two games at home against teams it matches up well with, Charlotte suffers through an ignominious start to its second half — one that matches its rough 1-6 first-half start. While there’s plenty of runway left, the Dynamo can’t afford to fall much further behind if it has any division hopes whatsoever.
