CapJack Rangers
Weekly Preview: Rangers have fallen below .500 and seek to climb back up. However, seems like a lot of flu going around and lots of regulars are getting scratched. Oh well, hopefully, this will clear up soon, and we can have the full slate of regulars for the last part of the season. That would be nice…. This week we get Vermont (always a very pesky opponent – but this year they’ve not been themselves, maybe too much B&J). Then we face the top team in the league – Philadelphia. We’ve been sent a lot of underground support from Chicago in efforts to take down the Firebirds – we’ll need all the help we can get…
Vermont Foresters @ CapJack Rangers This was a hard-fought game that was settled in the 3rd after a cross-checking and misconduct penalty. 16 penalties were called in this one and the final score reflected only 5 goals total scored in what has been a very offensive season. And the 3rd period PP goal was the only PP goal of the game (out of 7 total chances).
OK – the lead has been buried, and so were the Foresters. Chopped down.
Period 1 – Vermont lead the attack with 14 to 8 in the SOG category, in fact, they dominated that stat in all 3 periods with a 42-23 overall game edge. And they were actually getting most of their shot attempts on the net – 54 total shot attempts, 46 on goal, 2 go in. Which might be a hint as to who was #1 star. All that said and done, it was the Rangers who score first went Gare puts one in a minute into the game. Surprisingly, it was only his 3rd goal of the season. Then Vermont got control – tying the game with 4 to goal in the 1st on a Hunter goal (11).
Second period – 6 minutes in, McCourt (12) puts the Foresters on top, but 3 minutes later Trottier (19) scores to tie it up.
Third period – so the Rangers finally capitalize on a PP when Mulvey (12) scores to put the Rangers back on top and Dion keeps everything out the net for the rest of the game. CAP wins 3-2.
STARS (all CAP)
1. Dion, 40 saves
2. Mulvey 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Gare 1 goal
Fox got 12 minutes in penalties (including his misconduct) and his penalty was the PP that cost the Foresters.
Philadelphia Firebirds @ CapJack Rangers For the 2nd straight home game, the Rangers were significantly out shot by their opponent – and for the 2nd time, it didn’t matter.
Period 1 – Rangers get 9 shots on goal – 3 of them beat Herron (who entered the game with only 1 loss this season). And Dion stopped all 9 shots the Firebirds sent his way. So, it was 3-0 after 1. Crowder, Robinson, and Trottier the goal scorers – all of the even variety.
Period 2 – oh how quickly things can change. Firebirds come out quickly and Mullen gets their 1st goal 2 minutes into the period. Crowder, however, fights back for CapJack and scores 22 seconds later to get the lead back to 3 goals at 4-1. But again, the Firebirds show they are for real, don’t roll over, and Holmgren and Dionne score – Holmgren’s was 21 seconds after Crowder’s goal. So in a span of 43 SECONDS, 3 goals were scored!!!!! 2 by Philly, 1 by CapJack. Dione’s goal, however, was a full 10 and a half minute after Holmgren’s, things were slowing down. Well, not really – just over a minute after Dionne made it 4-3 for CAP, Mulvey scores for the Rangers to make it 5-3. But in the nature of quick scores – Mullen scores again (38 seconds after Mulvey’s goal) to cut the margin back to 1 and it’s 5-4 Rangers as period 2 ends.
3rd Period – But here is where Dion again gets tough – Firebirds fire 13 shots on net, but the Rangers Shutt is the only one who scores in the 3rd as Dion shuts the door on the net and CapJack skates off the 6-4 winner!!!! And for all you Risto fans back in Philly, he got 1 assist and 1 block shot during the game. And he had a -3 in the P/M stats. You should be proud.
STARS
1. (CAP) Crowder, 2 goals
2. (PHI) Mullen, 2 goals
3. (CAP) Trottier,1 goal, 1 assist
Maruck won 19 faceoffs and Dion had 31 big saves!
Weekly Summary: So, for this week, at least at home it was a total success, 4 points in 2 games and before we see the out of town results, we are above .500 again!!
Brooklyn Harbor Rats
Weekly Preview: 3 home games for the Rats fans
New Castle Ducks @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Ducks come out blasting away but it’s Mark Osborne that gets the Harbor Rats on top on Brooklyn’s first shot. Paul Reinhart makes it 2-0 midway through the first but Bob Bourne gets one back for New Castle. Brooklyn gives the Ducks multiple man advantages in this game, not smart against the league’s top power-play unit. But after killing their off the Ducks 5th chance, it’s Anton Stastny who gives Brooklyn a 3-1 lead. Greg Millen stops 41 of 42 New Castle shots for the win.
Mackinac Island Moose @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Bobby Smith scores just 14 seconds after the puck drops and Osborne’s power-play goal opens a 2-0 lead after one. Lysiak cuts the lead in half early in the 2nd period but Smith’s 2nd of the game regains the two-goal lead for Brooklyn. Early in the 3rd, Bengt-Ake Gustafsson’s breakaway score puts it away, as Ron Low stops 33 of 34 shots in a 4-1 Rats win.
Delray Alpha @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Gustafsson’s goal late in the 2nd period evens the score at 3-3 as we head into the 2nd intermission. With the teams skating 4 aside midway through the 3rd, Patrice Tardif nets the game-winner for the Alpha as Dave Parro makes 35 saves in the Delray 4-3 win.
Weekly Summary: 2-1 in 3 home tilts, not bad. Surprising we shut down the league’s top power play in the opener against New Castle.
New Castle Ducks
Weekly Preview: The Ducks, battling with the Firebirds for first place in their division, play three tough teams at home this week – division-leading Mackinac Island and two teams battling for a division lead – Charlestown and Silk City
Charlestown Chiefs @ New Castle Ducks NEW 6 CHA 4 The Ducks win in a shootout as they take a 3-0 lead in the first period only to see the Chiefs tie it before the Ducks came back with 2 of their own to make it 5-3 in the second. Charlestown scored again in the second to make it 5-4 going to the third period. In the third, Rick Middleton scored an unassisted goal for the Ducks at 2:27 and New Castle held the Chiefs scoreless the rest of the way, making the final score 6-4

THREE STARS:
1- NEW Rick Middleton 2G 1 A
2- CHA Paul Gardner 2G 1 A
3- NEW Barry Pederson 1G 2 A

Charlestown outshot New Castle 33-29 including 14-9 in the third period. Michel “Bunny” Larocque made 29 saves for the Ducks to win his 9th this season. He is now 9-1-2.

Mackinac Island Moose @ New Castle Ducks Brian Propp scored his second goal of the game with 45 seconds remaining to give the Moose an exciting 5-4 win over the Ducks. Propp opened the scoring in the first period before Ducks rookie sensation Barry Pederson tied it later in the period. Brian Engblom then scored his first of the year to give the Moose a 2-1 lead after one. In the second period, Bill Barber made it 3-1 before Bobby Clarke scored less than a minute later to make it 3-2. The Moose then made it 4-2 when Paul MacLean scored his 14th of the year. Once again, the Ducks came back as Blair MacDonald scored his first of the year and the second period ended with Mackinac Island ahead 4-3. In the third period, on the power play, Bobby Clarke scored his second of the game (and only his third of the season) at 7:47 to tie the game! And that’s the way it remained as it looked like the game would end in a tie – until Propp upended things scoring his 13th of the year from Dunlop and Napier beating a stunned Billy Smith in the New Castle goal.

THREE STARS:
1- MAC Brian Propp 2 G
2- NEW Bobby Clarke 2G
3- MAC Marc Napier 3A

Mackinac’s Dunlop also had 3 assists and defenseman O’Connell had 5 blocked shots. Both Curt Giles of the Moose and Terry O’Reilly of the Ducks received misconduct penalties

Silk City Whales @ New Castle Ducks SCW 4 NEW 2 The Whales come to the Duck Pond and leave happy as LaVallee, Sauve, Bullard and Sutter score for the Silk City squad. The Whales took a 2-0 first period lead only to see the Ducks tie it with 2 in the second, as Ryan Walter scored both New Castle goals, one on the power play. For Walter, the goals were his 17th and 18th of a terrific season. As the period wound down and the teams prepared to go to the locker room tied, Mike Bullard burst the Ducks bubble as he put the puck past Larocque with ONE SECOND left on the clock. Bullard’s 18th of the year made it 3-2 at intermission. In the third period, the Ducks outshot the Whales 12-7 but the period’s only goal was by Duane Sutter of the Whales at 11:29. Bob Sauve stood tall in goal for Silk City as he made 28 saves to win his 11th of the year (11-8). Larocque was on the losing end for only the second time this season (9-2-2)
Weekly Summary: A tough week at home for the Ducks as they lose 2 of 3 and get only 2 of a possible 6 points
North Carolina 89’ers
Weekly Preview: With all home games this week it’s a great time for NC to try and increase their lead in the division.
Delray Alpha @ North Carolina 89’ers In a game marred by undisciplined play, with a total of 5 goals given up on Power Plays, Delray is able to hold on. After getting off to a 5-1 lead, NC scored 4 unanswered goals to tie things up. With 40 seconds left, the Great One scored his only goal of the game, sealing things up for the Alpha.

FINAL SCORE: DEL 6 NC 5

THREE STARS:
1 DEL Acton – 2G
2 DEL Gretzky – 1G 1A
3 DEL Tardif – 1G 1A
DEL Parro – 39 saves
NC Fuhr – 33 saves

Vermont Foresters @ North Carolina 89’ers Another game in which NC digs themselves into a big ditch early and spends the rest of the game trying to claw back. Though it ended up being a two-goal game, it was never that close.

FINAL SCORE: VER 8 NC 6

THREE STARS:
1 VER Hughes – 3G 1A
2 VER Lukowich – 2G 1A
3 VER Foligno – 2G

Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ North Carolina 89’ers NC continues their high scoring ways, but this time is able to shut down the opposition. At the midway point of the second, it was all tied up at 2-2, but then NC broke out for 5 unassisted, including 2 in two minutes by Steve Payne, effectively putting the game out of reach.

FINAL SCORE: NC 7 BRK 2

THREE STARS:
1 NC Payne 2G 2A
2 NC Jarvis 2G
3 NC Fox 1G 1A
BRK Millen – 38 saves
NC Soetaert – 34 saves.

Amusing stat of the game: Playfair – BRK – 7 PIM

Philadelphia Firebirds @  Even though being outshot nearly 2-1, the Philadelphia Firebirds are able to make their shots count, beating Grant Fuhr and the 89ers to finish up a horrendous homestand for NC.

FINAL SCORE: PHI 5 NC 1

THREE STARS:
1 PHI Heron 43 saves
2 PHI Dionne 1G 1A
3 PHI Maruk 1G 1A

Fuhr: 19 saves on 24 shots.

Weekly Summary: Led by Fuhr’s .824 save percentage over the week, NC embarrasses themselves at home going 1-3, leaving the door wide open for Mackinac Island.
Ohio Legends
Weekly Preview: The Ohio Legends open the week in last place in the Adams Division and have the fewest standings points of any MWOTHL team.
CapJack Rangers @ Ohio Legends Bernie Federko’s second goal of the night and 16th goal of the season with 1:10 to go lifted Ohio to a 5-4 win over CapJack.

The Rangers outshot the Legends, 41-23, and Glen Hanlon turned in a herculean 37 save performance in the opening game of the week.

CapJack had a pair of goals from Grant Mulvey in the defeat. Ohio’s Glen Cochrane racked up 25 PIMs in the contest, that saw the Rangers go one-for-three on the power play.

Charlestown Chiefs @ Ohio Legends John Anderon’s hat trick and Glen Hanlon’s 45 saves helped Ohio to a 7-3 win over Smythe Division leader Charlestown.

The Chiefs outshot the Legends, 48-26, in the contest and Bernie Federko added four assists for Ohio. Ray Allison had a pair of goals and three points for the Legends, who posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Weekly Summary: Two wins for Ohio? The plans for blowing this up and starting over are on hold…for another week.

Glen Hanlon goes 2-0-0 on the week at home, with a 3.50 GAA and a .919 save percentage (79 of 86). His season record is now 2-7-1…..

Philadelphia Firebirds
Weekly Preview: Pittsburgh Visits this week
Pittsburgh Spirit Philly scores 4 unanswered goals in the first period and coasts to a 6-2 win over the Stanley Cup Champs.

Joey Mullen had 2 goals as well as Linseman.

Weekly Summary: 2 pts for the suddenly mediocre Firebirds.
Mackinac Island Moose
Weekly Preview: The Moose host Norris Division leaders Philadelphia (18-4-2) and Patrick Division CapJack (10-11-2). This will not be an easy week at home.
Philadelphia Firebirds @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 5, Firebirds 3 – Quickly, the Moose get a bad break when Engblom goes down with an injury, forcing the Moose to play with just 5 defensemen the rest of the game. Things turn around middle of the period however, when Dunlop deflects a shot into the goal, and a little later, after Maruk gets whistled for roughing, Kurri nets a saved shot that got loose, and the Moose are up 2-0 with just over 5 minutes to go. Shortly before the period ends, Secord and McKechnie hook up for a lengthy battle, declared a draw, earning Secord 5 minutes, and McKechnie 5 + 10 (for being a dick). Philly is held to just 5 SOG in the period, to 14 for the Moose, and the period ends 2-0, but now the Moose are down 2 skaters.

2nd period, the Moose feeling pretty good, except for missing 2 skaters, and that feeling disappears just like a good pizza, as the Firebirds get one from Maruk less than a minute in, and another from Van Boxmeer in the next minute. Just like that, pizza all gone, beer all gone, and so is the lead. The Moose stop the bleeding for a little bit, but then Dionne piles on the misery, and nobody in home jerseys are smiling anymore. The Moose manages to stop the scoring, but the damage is done, and the 14 SOG for the visitors nets 3 goals, making it 3-2 Philly.

3rd period – Just like a Clive Cussler book, the 3rd period is like a new chapter, and the story takes a big turn as the hero makes a big comeback. First Barber evens things up, just under a minute in. Then the plot thickens as both the good guys and bad guys get an upper hand, but no fatalities. Finally, just under 3 minutes to go, Dunlop gets open near the front of the net, and becomes the hero, putting the Moose up 4-3. Finally, under all sorts of pressure from the Firebirds, Melanson stands up to a flurry of shots, until a wild rebound prompts a breakout for the home team and Park finds the empty net for some breathing room, to make the final 5-3

Other fights – Secord and Propp

1st star = Dunlop 2G
2nd = Kurri 1G 2pts
3rd = Barber 1G 2pts

CapJack Rangers @ Mackinac Island Moose Moose 5, CapJack 2 – CapJack dominates the game, for about 10 minutes, and then its all Mackinac Island. First, the Moose once again lose a skater, as defenseman Smith leaves with a hand injury about 7 minutes in. Then the visitors pounce, first with Trottier scoring, and then DeBlois. The Moose are down 2 goals and one skater. In a little bit, Mulvey gets a penalty, and the home team uses the advantage to trim the lead with MacLean finding the net on a close-in shot. The lead is erased just 3 minutes later when Propp hits a slapper from outside, and both teams coast into intermission tied at 2

2nd period – Both teams struggle to get their offenses clicking, but the Moose do find one opening, and MacLean gets his 2nd of the game, late in the period. Teams combing for just 13 SOG, and the Moose are happy to have the 3-2 lead.

Early in the 3rd, the Moose lose another skater, as Dunlop goes to the locker room with a leg injury. The Moose shuffle a couple of lines, and the happy skater pulled up from the 4th line, is Pat Boutette. Pat scores the only 2 goals in the 3rd period, pushing the score to 5-2, getting player of the game, earning a rare after game spotlight interview, and Gatorade Shower.

1st star – Boutette 2G 3pts
2nd – MacLean 2G
3rd – Propp 1G 2pts

Weekly Summary: A big surprise in a good way, with 4 points, in games where injuries had the Moose at a disadvantage early each game. In addition, the defense has stepped up, allowing only 5 goals in the 2 games, compared to the 5+ goals per game allowed the last week at home. Maybe we should play only 5 defensemen each game going forward. Go figure. Good point production from all lines.
Pittsburgh Spirit
Weekly Preview: The defending champs are thinking of selling off some key components to start the inevitable rebuild… Rumors have the likes of Sittler, LaFleur, Pettersson, Chouinard, and Resch all being shopped around. Inquire within… 😉
Ohio Legends @ Pittsburgh Spirit Ohio comes in and manhandles the Spirit on their way to a 5-1 win. Kerr and Allison each pot 2 and Hanlon makes 30 saves.
Silk City Whales @ Pittsburgh Spirit Silk City wasn’t so smooth as the Spirit hold on to win 4-3

Kehoe pots 2 in a losing effort.

Weekly Summary: 1-1 for the week. Come and get ’em while they’re hot! 😉
Charlotte Dynamo
Weekly Preview: The rebuilding Dynamo, showing some signs of life lately, hosted three games during this latest week, against Syracuse, Ohio and Chicago.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Charlotte Dynamo Steve Bozek sparkles for the Dynamo, recording a hat trick that propels it to a 4-1 lead as Charlotte ultimately cruises past the Bulldogs, 6-2. Dale Hawerchuk tacked on the last two goals for Charlotte in the last two minutes of play (one on an empty net), after the Bulldogs’ rookie Neal Broten had narrowed the lead to 4-2 with a goal midway through the third.
Ohio Legends @ Charlotte Dynamo The Dynamo suffer a 5-4 letdown to Ohio as the Legends get early goals from Miroslav Frycer, Mark Pavelich and Greg Terrion to grab an early 3-0 lead. Ohio also established a 5-2 lead and never trailed. Charlotte’s goals in the last two minutes from Hawerchuk and Bozek made the game seem closer than it actually was.
Chicago Underground @ Charlotte Dynamo Charlotte blows a 5-3 second period lead then salvages a 6-6 tie. Mike Blaisdell scored two goals late in the second period to tie the game for the Underground and Denis Savard’s power-play goal with 10 minutes left in the game gave Chicago a shortlived 6-5 lead. With 4:54 left, however, Torrie Robertson converted a power-play goal for the Dynamo to close out the scoring.
Weekly Summary: Last place Charlotte outscores its three opponents but is only able to obtain three of six points at home.
Vermont Foresters
Saint Clair Shores Saints @ Vermont Foresters Going into the 3rd period Vermont was out-shot 31-10 and trailed 3-0 but with 28 seconds left Dale McCourt netted the tying goal for a 3-3 final.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Vermont Foresters A rare defensive struggle with only 25 shots for each team saw Syracuse lead 1-0 after the 1st period on a Reed Larson ppg. Then Vermont led 2-1 after the 2nd period after goals by Lukowich and Hughes and the 3rd period ended scoreless for a 2-1 Vermont victory.
Weekly Summary: A big come from behind tie and a victory in a defensive struggle. The sad season in Vermont continues. The only question is can they stay close enough to use Kent Nilsson or will they try and trade him?
