1980 CLARENCE CAMPBELL SEMI-FINALS – SAN DIEGO MARINERS @ PITTSBURGH SPIRIT

PLAYOFF SEMI-FINAL MATCH UP
San Diego MarinersPittsburgh SpiritSemi-Finals between San Diego and Pittsburgh start NOW!!!

GAME #1 The puck drops… San Diego, which of course in German means a whale’s vagina, comes out firing. Puck after puck fired at Chico Resch and he is up to the task, keeping his shutout streak going for at least another period. Lafleur pots his 4th of the playoffs and we head to the 2nd with the Spirit up 1-0 despite being outshot 18-10.

2nd period – at 6:22 on the PP, Simmer does what he did all season and that is light the lamp for his 4th of the playoffs to tie the game 1-1, and that’s how it would stay for the remained of the 2nd.

3rd period… this is playoff hockey!

At 3:51 Hedberg (5) gives the Spirit the lead 2-1, but less than a minute later Simmer (5) again ties it up, 2-2.

At 13:17 The Flower scores his 5th to take a 3-2 lead with less than 7 minutes remaining.

San Diego pulls Cheevers for the extra attacker… with 49 seconds left, Perreault gets his 3rd of the playoffs to tie it up 3-3!

We head to OT…

San Diego wastes no time as Busniuk (1) scores 34 seconds into the extra frame to send the home fans home angry and take a 1-0 series lead.

GAME #2 The Spirit look like all business. In interviews they are all short with answers and have that look in their eyes. Game 2 starts… NOW!

Pittsburgh dominates the period in terms of shots and chances, but it’s still scoreless until 18:42 on the PP MacLeish (4) gives the Spirit the lead 1-0.

2nd period – 33 seconds in Bulley (2) bullies his way onto the scoresheet and ties it 1-1.

Pittsburgh on the PP again as Greschner (1) tickles the twine from way downtown on the PP to take the lead back 2-1.

15:55 – Holmgren (4) ties it up 2-2.

Head into the 3rd period…

1:54 on the PP Hedberg (6) continues his surprisingly torrid playoff scoring run to give the Spirit the 3-2 lead.

3:07 – on the PP (again) MacLeish (5) makes it 4-2.

12:10 – on the PP (again again) Lafleur scores his 6th. 5-2 Pittsburgh lead.

15:05 NOT on the PP, even strength Lafleur (7) stretches the lead 6-2 and that is where it will stay as Pittsburgh wins Game 2 at home to send it San Diego with the series tied 1-1.

Game 1 was back and forth, very even. San Diego steals one in the final seconds on the 3rd and in OT.
Game 2 was pretty even until the 3rd period when the Spirit broke loose on the PP and dominated going 5-9 with the man advantage.
Games 3 and 4 should be great playoff hockey! With the future of the San Diego franchise in doubt, the team has everything to win and nothing to lose.
Pittsburgh comes to town with the series tied 1-1
GAME #3 1st period – MacLeish (6) for PIT and Simmer (6) for SD score to end the period tied 1-1.

2nd Period – Greschner (2) for PIT and Sharpley (2) for SD score to end the 2nd period tied 2-2.

The strange symmetry would end in the 3rd. Chapman (5) gives SD the lead 3-2.

With under a minute left, PIT pulls Chico Resch and SD pots two empty net goals to win it 5-2 and take a 2-1 series lead.

GAME #4 This one was a high scoring affair for sure.

1st period – Bulley (3) makes it 1-0 SDM. Tkaczuk (2) ties it at 2. Lafleur (8) gives PIT the 2-1 lead. Vickers (5) pads that lead to 3-1.

2nd period – Holmgren (6) on the PP and Moffat (1) gives SDM a quick 3-2 lead. Then some back and forth as MacLeish (7) PIT, Simmer (7) SDM, and Sittler (5) PIT, all score. When the dust settles PIT is up 5-4.

3rd period – Lafleur (9) opens the scoring in the 3rd to give PIT a 2 goal cushion 6-4. Wouldn’t last long. (Moffat (2) pulls SDM within one 6-5, but Hedberg (7) scores a minute later to make it 7-5 PIT. Chapman would make it close with his 6th but PIT shut the door the rest of the way despite being outshot 17-12 in the 3rd.

Going back to Pittsburgh for Game 7.

Here we go. Game 7. The most exciting moment in any sport. Win and move on. Lose and go home.

GAME #7 1st Period – 3:50 mark, Labraaten (5) opens the scoring and gives Pittsburgh an early 1-0 lead.

At the 15:13 mark Simmer (10) ties it 1-1.

Go to the 2nd…

27 seconds in, Simmer gets his second of the night (11) as he continues to torch Chico Resch. If we could only shut Simmer down (haha Simmer down), we could maybe win this thing! SDM up 2-1.

5:33 MacLeish (8) ties it at 2-2.

13:20 Callighen (1) scores his first of the playoffs, and what a time to do it! SDM up 3-2

34 seconds later, Flower Power!! Lafleur with his 11th of the playoffs (tied with Simmer down now). Game tied 3-3.

3rd period…

3:31 in Sittler (7) gives Pittsburgh the 4-3 lead.

Can Chico hold court? He was clutch in the first round. Can he continue?

Simmer throws multiple shots at him, but Chico is up to the task. The rest of the Mariners throw the kitchen sink at him, but he stands tall and Pittsburgh goes on to win Game 7 4-3!!!
