Stars #1 Mulvey
2 Payne

Stars #1 Edwards

Weekly Summary: The Bulldogs split at home

Chicago Underground
Weekly Preview: Only once chance to disappoint the fans of the Windy City this week.
Philadelphia Firebirds @ Chicago Underground Plenty of chippness in this one. Chicago does nothing good and comes out on the short end of the stick in this one.

Craig MacTavish has a Goal and 2 Assists for the #1 Star.

Weekly Summary: Chicago stinks. They have no clue what they are doing.

CapJack Rangers
Weekly Preview: The Rangers have been on a good surge in the past several weeks, but so have the Pittsburgh Spirit – and the Spirit are trying to run away with the tight Patrick Division. So the Rangers can’t afford to slip up. This week they host two other division leaders – Syracuse and the leagues best team – Vermont. In between they take on Silk City.
Syracuse Bulldogs The game starts out well for CapJack as they get 2 goals in the first 3:43. Fraser then gets one back for Syracuse late in the 1st and Derlago ties it up 8 minutes into the 2nd. We head to the 3rd tied 2-2 but then the Rangers rattle off 4 straight goals to break it open, 2 even, 1 shorthanded and 1 PP. Trottier gets 2 goals in the game. Larouche gets one in the last minute to make the final CAPJACK 6, SYRACUSE 3.
STARS (all CAP)
1. Trottier 2 goals, 1 assist
2. Douglas 2 goals
3. Gare 1 goal, 2 assists
Silk City Whales @ CapJack Rangers Oddly similar game – the final was 6-3 CapJack. Each team scores in the opening minute, Bourne for Silk City, Gare (52) for CapJack. The the Rangers get 2 more in the 1st to go up 3-1. But in the middle of the 2nd, Houston (15) and Harris (6) score to tie it up at 3-3. But Robinson (9) gets a PP goal late in the 2nd late (his 2nd goal of the game) and then MacMillan (12) and Trottier (40) get goals in the 3rd to ice it.
STARS (All CAP)
1. Robinson 2 goals
2. Trottier 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Cloutier 1 goal, 1 assist
Vermont Foresters @ CapJack Rangers This is the game and the Rangers pretty much out play the Foresters in every category – they even doubled up on penalties 14 minutes to 6 and gave the Foresters 7 PP attempts (they converted on 1 and the Rangers didn’t convert on their 3. And the difference in the game was 1 goal. AND it was the PP goal that won it. However, Vermont got 3 goals in the 2nd period – 1 ever, 1 SH, 1 PP!
1st Period Rangers jump out to a 2-0 lead before the 10 minute mark with goals from Trottier (41) and Shutt (48). Then Lukowich (28) gets one late in the 1st. Then the 2nd period 3 goal outburst from Vermont – Leach (3), Howe (24 and SH) and Price (8 – PP) and Vermont goes up 4-2. Douglas (24) gets one at 11:55 of the 3rd to get it to 4-3. Final minute the Rangers pull out all stops but can’t beat Hanlon and the Vermont gets the big win.
STARS (ALL VER)
1. Lukowich 1 goal, 2 assists
2. Howe 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Nilsson 3 assists
Weekly Summary: Well 2-1 sounds pretty good, but right now, it hurts a bit. But Rangers are still in the hunt, hoping to stay close enough to Pittsburgh and still make a run. However, San Diego and Brooklyn still have a LOT to say. Ranger have a road game this week at San Diego!!

Saskatoon Cyclone
Weekly Preview: Two home games for Saskatoon as we try to claw our way to .500 hockey as we take on Brooklyn and San Diego.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Saskatoon Cyclone A game completely dominated by Saskatoon which really was not reflected in the score thanks to more lackluster goaltending by Bill (Spuds) McKenzie but in any case the Cyclone came away with a crazy 6-3 win.
Saskatoon outshot the Harbor Rats by a huge margin in the first two period (19-4 and 14-6), but thanks to a 3-goal flurry within a minute early on the 2nd period (two of which were by Brooklyn) the game was actually tied 3-3 up until 7:25 of the 2nd period when while on the power play for Saskatoon Pat Hughes somehow snuck onto the ice and scored a wraparound goal on Mike Palmateer to give Saskatoon a 4-3 edge.
The Cyclone scored two more unanswered goals and that was it.
The lopsided-ness of the game carried to the power play as Saskatoon was 1/7 as opposed to just 0/1 for Brooklyn.
SCORING SUMMARY:

San Diego Mariners @ Saskatoon Cyclone The high-scoring bastards from San Diego came to town and ran into the wall of goaltending that was Rogie Vachon (please stop laughing).
Vachon stoned the Mariners for 50 minutes but then a 90-second day dream resulted in San Diego’s Blair MacDonald and Derek Smith taking outside shots that found their way into the Saskatoon net, tying the game at 2-2 which is the way that it ended.
The game was pretty even overall with San Diego getting a slight edge in shots 31-25 and an even slimmer edge in time on attack (4:15 vs 4:13).
Overall it was a tightly checked match with much of the playing consisting of the two teams grinding it out along the boards with not all that many really good scoring chances.
Bob Sirois of Saskatoon opened the scoring midway through the 1st period on a delayed penalty to Blair Chapman when Bob Gainey fed a pass to Wayne Gretzky who slid it over to Sirois who fired it home at point blank range past Gerry Cheevers.
Darcy Rota closed out the scoring for Saskatoon midway through the 2nd period on a backhander high over the shoulder of Cheevers.
San Diego’s goal flurry consisted of MacDonald finishing off a nice series of passes on a 3-on-2 between himself, Charlie Simmer and Gilbert Perreault with a bullet from near the blueline that Vachon never really saw. Smith’s goal came 91 seconds later when his wrist shot from outside baffled Vachon and went in off of his trapper.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First period
1. SAS, Sirois (6) – Gretzky (68), Gainey (14) 11:58
Second period
2. SAS, Rota (11) – Shand (5), Charron (22) 11:10

4. SD, SMith (25) – Bulley (17) 12:23Stars
1. SAS, Sirois – 1 G
2. SAS, Rota – 1 G
3. SD, Smith – 1 G
Weekly Summary: Three points out of a possible four is probably better than we could have expected against these two strong opponents so we will gleefully take them and await the results of our two away games.

Charlestown Chiefs
Weekly Preview: Two home games follow our best week evah in MWOTHL. Can we keep the momentum?
San Diego Mariners @ Charlestown Chiefs San Diego takes a 3-2 lead into the 3rd, but Charlestown stuns everyone by getting a pair of goals from blueliners Faubert (4) and Giles (2) to steal the game 4-3. Jim Rutherford continues playing above his pay grade, and Ken Linseman collects 3 points in the victory.

Pittsburgh Spirit @ Charlestown Chiefs All good things must come to pass, and in our case it’s a butt whippin’ by our own brother 5-2. Jim Rutherford gets slaughtered, and starts talking about giving up the pads and becoming a GM. He’d probably make a pretty good one, we’d guess. We’ll see what the future holds for Jimmy R.

Chicago Underground @ Mackinac Island Moose Chicago 6, Moose 2 – After giving up a quick goal to the Moose, the Underground dominate the remaining 57 minutes 6-1 and take the boat home victorious. Nice goaltending by Paul Shmyr with 30 saves.

2nd star – McNab 1g1a
3rd star – Goring 1g
Weekly Summary: One home game on the Island near the big bridge and not a happy ending. No points for the Moose.

Vermont Foresters
Weekly Preview: two home games this week for the foresters.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Vermont Foresters this was a game vermont will not soon forget. pittsburgh scores 4 goals in the 1st period and never looks back. glen hanlon looked like ron grahame and seemed to try and avoid pucks shot at him in the 1st. pittsburgh dominated the 1st period, vermont, the least penalized team in the league, amassed 26 minutes in penalties, including a game misconduct for pat price for berating referee don koharski after he was whistled for vermonts 4th minor of the 1st period. pittsburgh went 2-7 on the pp for the game, darryl sittler had 2g 1a and rick macleish and ron greschner also scored for the visitors. mccourt and nilsson scored for vermont trying to get back in the game but it was not nearly enough.
Silk City Whales @ Vermont Foresters with silk city coming to town vermont turned to the human sieve ron grahame to face the whales mario lessard and one of these goalies did not make it to the end of the game. vermont, determined not to be embarassed on home ice again, came out flying, putting up 15 shots and 15 scoring chances in the 1st and getting a 3-0 lead by the periods end. silk city did not go away easy though as brasar and messier scored in the first 5:18 of the 2nd to make it 3-2. this, unfortunately for the whales woke up vermont who scored 3 goals in a span of 3:25 in the middle of the period to chase lessard. vermont added 1 more in the 3rd for the 7-2 final score. vermont was 3-5 on the pp, dale mccourt had 2 goals, rich preston 1g 2a, morris lukowich 1g 1a, and mike foligno 2 assists. duane sutter scored his 1st of the year in the second period after scrapping with older brother brian in the first period. ron grahame stopped 29 of 31 shots for the win.
Weekly Summary: vermont has their worst period of the year and then outscores their opponents 9-2 in the next 5 periods but thats only good for a 1-1 record and 2 points as the race for the leagues best record starts to tighten up. ron grahame despite playing horrible at times has a lower gaa then glen hanlon 3.41 to 3.56

Pittsburgh Spirit
Weekly Preview: 2 home games for the 1st place Spirit. Will they be able to continue their hot streak? Or will Saskatoon and/or Brooklyn break their “spirit”?
Saskatoon Cyclone @ Pittsburgh Spirit Some kid named Gretzky comes to town. He scores 2 goals, but it’s not enough as the Spirit continue to roll on to a 7-4 win.
Brooklyn Harbor Rats @ Pittsburgh Spirit Division rival Brooklyn comes to town in the basement of the Patrick Division, but in a tight division that doesn’t mean much. Still, the Spirit look to further distance themselves from the rest of the pack in the division… and they do with a 5-2 win. A total team effort.
Weekly Summary: 2 games, 4 points. The Spirit continue to roll and move ahead of the pack in the Patrick.

Let’s see how the road games go!
