Chicago Underground
Weekly Preview: Chicago gets one home game to try and keep the fans on the happy side as the Chief of Charlestown invade the Capone Center.
Charlestown Chiefs @ Chicago Underground Charleston does most of the scoring & the referee’s seem to call 7 straight penalties against the Underground. This one’s a hard tough loss as the Chicago fans despise the Chiefs & their owners. “Who OWNS the Chiefs, OWNS the Chiefs”…

Final Score: Charlestown 5 – Chicago 1

Star#1: Lanny McDonald – 2 Goals, 1 Assist
Star#2 Curt Giles – 1 Goal 1 Assist
Star #3 Mario Tremblay – 1 Goal

Jim Rutherford 22 Saves for the Chiefs
Pete Peeters 25 Saves for the Underground

Weekly Summary: Chicago loses their only home game of the week to Charlestown.

Saskatoon Cyclone
Weekly Preview: A single home game for Saskatoon and armed with their new goal tending tandem from Syracuse they host the floundering Philadelphia Firebirds.
Philadelphia Firebirds @ Saskatoon Cyclone Don Edwards and Denis Herron gone … check.
Rogie Vachon and Bill McKenzie in … check.
Rogie got the nod in nets for the first game since the big (and only) trade with Syracuse as the Cyclone continue their march (i.e., drunken stagger) towards the MWOTHL’s first Cup in a monumental meeting with the Philadelphia Firebirds.
Pure genius is what they were saying in the press box about the Saskatoon GM in the early going of this game as Vachon turned aside 21 shots in the first period against the hungry Firebirds.
Unfortunately the Saskatoon coach’s thoughts were more of the “WTF?” variety given that his team came out flat against a cellar-dwelling team with a 17-30-5 record. To his team’s defence, almost half of the period was spent killing penalties with Kevin Lowe in the box for two and Bob Gainey for five as a result of a jaw breaking elbow thrown at Bobby Schmautz (who if I recall was no stranger to broken jaws). On the bright side, Vachon and company kept the Firebirds off the scoresheet.
The 2nd period was a much tighter checking period that featured only 17 shots in total (Philly out ahead 9-8 again), but did see some scoring action.
Craig MacTavish opened the scoring when he broke up a play at centre ice then completed a nifty passing give and go play with Marcel Dionne and Dave Keon that ended with MacTavish batting home the puck from the top of the faceoff circle to the left of the net that Vachon could only get a piece of. Good for Craig as it gave him five goals on the year.
With Bobby Schmautz off for hooking, Wayne Gretzky bore down on Wayne Stephenson and lifted a backhander over the Firebirds’ goalie’s outstretched pads and into the net for his 36th goal of the year tying it 1-1.
At 12:17, fricking defenceman Gordie Roberts forgot he was no good and rifled a slapshot through Vachon’s legs to give Philly back the lead at 2-1.
Into the 3rd we go ..
Cyclone Coach Scotty Bowman’s head was about to explode with frustration and he ran the length of the bench screaming at everyone not named Tardif, Gretzky or Taylor that the team needed some scoring support and could not rely on just one fricking line all of the time.
Naturally that worked wonders. The rest of the Saskatoon team pretty much disappeared after that and of course at the midway point of the 3rd, Marc Tardif took a drop pass from Gretzky and wristed one past Stephenson to tie the game 2-2. Kevin Lowe also assisted on the play as a result of some charity on the part of the official game scorer I guess.
Bobby Schmautz was at the centre of pretty much everything going on in this game so it was no surprise when he took a weird bounce of the boards deep in the Saskatoon end and slipped it past the badly out of position Cyclone keeper to give Philadelphia back the lead 3-2.
The Cyclone did put a bit of extra pressure on Stephenson in the late going, but couldn’t sustain anything and then deflated altogether when John Anderson zipped a shot into the vacated Saskatoon net with less than a minute remaining.
FINAL SCORE – PHILADELPHIA 4, SASKATOON 2
Sigh …
Game Stars (stupid so I’m picking my own):
1. PHI, Bobby Schmautz (1 goal, 4 hits, 1 Tk, and took a nice elbow from Gainey)
2. PHI, Gordie Roberts (1 goal, 3 hits and a nice +3 in the game despite only playing 12 minutes)
3. SAS, Wayne Gretzky (1 goal, 1 assist, 14/21 faceoffs won, 4 shots)SCORING SUMMARY
1st period

2nd period
1. PHI, MacTavish (5) – Dionne (44), Keon (23) 2:58
2. SAS, Gretzky (36) – Tardif (31) 6:32 (PPG)
3. PHI, Roberts (5) – Bridgman (30), McKegney (21) 12:17
3rd period
4. SAS, Tardif (28) – Lowe (12), Gretzky (58) 9:24
5. PHI, Schmautz (16) – Lee (24), Gorence (7) 13:14
6. PHI, Anderson (19) – Dionne (45), Lee (25) 19:23 (en)
Weekly Summary: Not really the kind of homestand we were hoping for as the team’s 2nd through 4th lines continue to sputter and provide pretty much nothing in the way of offense. Kudos to Philly for administering the pretty convincing buttkicking with only Rogie Vachon stopping it from being a rout.

Syracuse Bulldogs
Weekly Preview: Syracuse tries to hold on to first playing 2 tough teams.
Saskatoon Cyclone @ Syracuse Bulldogs The Bulldogs host the Cyclone in a battle of traded goalies. Syracuse gives up a first and third round pick for a stud goalie and his backup. A good trade for both teams. Syracuse wins it 6-1.
Stars #1 MacAdam
2 Propp
3 Boldirev
CapJack Rangers @ Syracuse Bulldogs CapJack employs the left wing lock to perfection as they hold off the Dogs 4-3
Stars#1 Boldirev

Weekly Summary: Syracuse enjoyed their newly acquired goalies as they both played well

Philadelphia Firebirds
Weekly Preview: Philly takes on Silk City and Pittsburgh…Home fans are writing down an easy 4 points for the Birds!
Silk City Whales Goals by Dionne and Nystrom for Philly and Houston Messier and Merrick briong us to the 3rd period with Silk City up 3-2. Craig McTavish ties the game up at 3 with a short handed break away waking up the Philly faithful. Minutes later Gordie Roberts jumps into the play and scores his 5th and Philly is up 4-3. With the fans erupting from the goal a brawl breaks out that results in Mel Bridgeman getting a game misconduct.

And then …… Silk Cities Brown slaps home his 4th to tie the game up…a minute late the iceberg known as Barry Beck scores on a breakway …yes Barry “pigeons roost on me” Beck scores on a breakaway!!!! And with a couple minutes to play Salming puts the nail in the coffin putting the Whale up to stay 6-4

Pittsburgh Spirit Reeling from The Whale game. The Birds come out flying against the Spirit. Only to get stoned..over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over by Chico the man.

Goals by Sittler , Labrattan Sitter and to really hurt Ricky Macleish

and the Spirit win and easy one 4-3

Weekly Summary: Philly plays 2 of the bottom teams in the league and realizes it IS the bottom team. Hey our PK unit was 1-13 soooo there is that….right?

CapJack Rangers
Weekly Preview: Rangers have 3 home games this week and hope to rack up some points. St.Clair Shores, Mackinac Island and Biloxi will visit the Round Garden.
St. Clair Shores Saints @ CapJack Rangers Well this was a scoring fest for the Rangers as they pummel the Saints 6-1. And the biggest news – Trottier didn’t score a single point. Rangers take the 1st 2-1 as Cloutier (12) and Esposito (18) get them in the net and Duguay (who wished he was a Ranger) made it close with a goal late in the period. 2nd period scoring was only a goal (PP) by Danny Gare (his 47th). But then the Rangers doubled their output with 3 more in the 3rd – Kindrachuck (5), Douglas (18) and Murdoch (13). Biggest star??
1. Bouchard , 33 saves
2. Cloutier 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Murdoch 1 goal, 1 assist
Trottier did win 19 faceoffs.
Mackinac Island Moose @ CapJack Rangers The Moose call went out and the Rangers responded. But it wasn’t a cake walk, at least not right away.
Period 1 – Within a minute and 14 seconds it was tied 1-1. Barber (36) gets the games first goal as he puts the Moose up 1-0 in 49 seconds. 25 seconds later and Shutt (45) ties the game, assisted by Trottier. Trottier was pointless in the previous game – well, he comes back with a chup on the shoulder and ends up with 6 points in this game (3 goals – HAT TRICK, and 3 assists. But don’t let that fool you, it was a tough game. Minute and 25 seconds after Shutt’s goal, Macinkac scores again when Barber gets his second goal (37) of the game. 11 minutes later Larson (13) socres and its 3-1 Mackinac. But then ….CapJack reals off 8 straight goals – 2 in the first to tie. 4 in the 2nd to explode into the lead and then 1 in the 3rd – that goal is offset by a last minute goal by Dunlop (16) – Reggie???CapJacks gets 3 from Trottier (and 3 assists), Murdoch tallies 3 as well (2 Hat Tricks for the Rangers) and Gare and MacMillan also tally – #48 for Gare.Stars:
1. Trottier 3 goals, 3 assists (and wins 23 faceoffs)
2. Murcdoch 3 goals
3. Shutt 1 goal, 3 assists
Biloxi Blades @ CapJack Rangers After the two high scoring games by the Rangers, they welcome the Blades to town. Maybe they shouldn’t have been quite so friendly.
Rangers get 1st goal late in first – Shutt (46) and then 4 minutes into 2nd Gare (49) makes it 2-0. Woohoo, maybe another big game??!!
Not so fast – Biloxi came to play, not to roll over. Hunter (7) gets one with 6 to go in the 2nd and then Walter (22) ties it with 30 seconds left in the 2nd. And Pronovost makes it 3-2 Biloxi 8 minutes into the 3rd period.
What was going on? Penalties, the Rangers get called for 7 penalties and the Blades capatilize 3 times, es all three of those goals were PP goals. At this point the the Patrick division, the Rangers can’t afford to lose a game. And they kept coming at the Blades and Gare scores his 50th of the season with 6 to go to tie the game. But from the point on, the teams played a stand off and the game ends in a 3-3 tie.STARS (all CAP)
1. Gare 2 goals (and reaches 50)
2. Shutt 1 goal and 1 assist
3. Trottier 3 assists (and 20 faceoffs)
Weekly Summary: Rangers win 2 and tie one for 5 points at home this week. And they end up able to finish off the rest of Larry Robinson’s rest days. Stretch run a coming, Rangers are beginning to really peak and find they rhythm, they just need to be more consistent defensively.

Mackinac Island Moose
Weekly Preview: The Patrick Division leading Pittsburg Spirit come to the Island to take on the last place Moose. Only home game this week.
Pittsburgh Spirit @ Mackinac Island Moose Spirit 1, Moose 1 – Goalies Rule! Resch saves 35, Meloche 25. Each team gets one goal, Sittler for the visitors, O’Connell for the home team. 5 minutes into the game, Campbell racks up a 5 minute major, plus a game misconduct. Both teams perfect on the penalty kill.
1st star Resch, 35 saves
2nd star O’Connell 1g
3rd star Sittler 1g
Weekly Summary: Moose get one point in their only home game, a 1-1 tie.

Dominant performers were the 2 goalies, Resch for Pitt, Meloche for the Moose. Each allowing only one goal.

Charlestown Chiefs
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Charlestown Chiefs Holy crap, the Chiefs win a home game! 1st place Syracuse becomes the embarrassed victim of a Charlestown victory, which ranks up there with Bigfoot and Nessie sightings as rare sighting phenomenon.

Pat Riggin “improves” his record to 5-10-2 with the win.

Brooklyn Harbor Rats
Weekly Preview: Syracuse and Quebec come to Brooklyn this week, the top 2 teams in the Norris division.
Syracuse Bulldogs @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats After a scoreless opening period, the Bulldogs jump out front with a pair of goals 2:28 into the 2nd. Pat Hickey’s 27th makes it a one goal game 5 minutes later, and 6 minutes after that, Rick Martin’s 29th of the season knots the score. With just over 3 minutes left in the middle frame, Bengt Ake Gustafsson snaps the tie and gives the Harbor Rats their first lead. A scoreless 3rd period helped by Mike Palmateer’s 10 saves (27 total for the game) gets Brooklyn 2 points.
Quebec City Le Blue @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Le Blue jumps out to a 2-0 first period lead and Tony Esposito holds the Rats off the board until 11 minutes remain and Pat Hickey’s 28th of the season makes it 2-1. But Jean Ratelle scores his 20th just 3 minutes later to re establish the 2 goal lead which helps when Pete Mahovlich scores with under 2 minutes remaining to again make it one goal game. Rats pull the goalie for the extra skater but it’s Quebec’s Rich Leduc’s empty netter that seals the road win.
Weekly Summary: A split at home for Brooklyn, making the Norris division race that much tighter

Brooklyn Harbor Rats
Weekly Preview: Three games for the Blades… 2 wins and a tie. Team is hanging around like pesky Gnat
Vermont Foresters @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Down 4-1 in after a period, the Foresters cut the lead down (get it? Foresters cut down… pretty clever I think) and tie it in the third only to let the Blades come back on a Rick Schoenfeld (of all people) score the game winner with under 2 minutes left. Blades 5 Foresters 4
San Diego Mariners @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats More late game magic as Blade Rick Middleton scores with less and a minute in the game to tie it Mariners 3 Blades 3
Biloxi Blades @ Brooklyn Harbor Rats Harbor Rats mailed this one in… Bilox scored 3 in first period and 3 in the third. Blades 6 Harbor Rats 0
