Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Break is over, hopefully no rust. Rangers face both Brentwood and Jagr this week – the Mullets are game 3 of a 3 game homestand while Brentwood is on the road. So it’s division time, but first a visit from our old friend Stray and the Chicago Cosa Nostra…..

CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA

@

BATHGATE RANGERS

1st home game of the week lasts 60 minutes so only 1 team will get points – and the final goal came in the final minute!!
First period was scoreless even though the Rangers gave Chicago 2 PP opportunities. They tried hard (14 SOGs) but Kahkonen stopped them all. Saros was equally talented in the 1st, stopping all 9 that got past the defense. In the 2nd, the Cosa Nostra got even hotter – firing 15 shots at Kahkonen while the Rangers fired 11 on Saros. Both goalies stopped all but 2 and after 2 it was 2-2. Chicago returned the advantage game in the 2nd giving Bathgate 2 PP chances, but like Chicago the Rangers couldn’t capitalize. And Lowry (4) got the games first goal early in the 2nd and Chicago was on top. Zibanejad (12) tied it up 3 minutes later and the just past halfway in the 2nd, Hertl put the good guys ahead 2-1 with his 16th goal. But in the final minutes of the 2nd, Wahlstrom (4) scores for Chicago to tie it up. So it’s on to the final period knotted at 2.

Early on the Rangers get productive as Oleksiak (3) scores from the point and then Anderson (2) gets a PP goal (finally) and the Rangers are up 4-2 with 12 minutes to go. Cosa Nostra bring out all the guns (tommy gun included) and fire away at Kahkonen – 19 shots in the 3rd period on goal – and then with 50 seconds left and the extra skater on the ice, Palat (12) scores for Chicago to make it 4-3 Bathgate. And they keep shooting – but Kahkonen keeps all the rest out – 45 saves in the game – and the Rangers hang on for the 4-3 win!!

STARS
1. BGR – Kahkonen 45 saves
2. CHI – Palat 1 goal, 1 assist
3. BGR – Anderson 1 goal (GWG)

 PITTSBURGH MINERS

BATHGATE RANGERS

Next the Miners skate into the Garden but the Rangers greet them with a goal 28 seconds after the opening puck drop! Rangers got the draw to Donskoi quick exchange with Provorov and Ritchie and he wrists it past Nedelijkovic for a very quick 1-0 lead. 6 minutes later, Tavares scores making it 2-0 Bathgate. Will this be a blowout? NO – Larsson wastes no time for Pittsburgh, getting them back in the game 50 seconds later when he fires a slapper at Reimer that he should have had except he never saw it. 2-1 with 12 1/2 left in the 1st.

And that’s what it was as the 2nd period commences. This period was tight defensively – each team managed 8 shots and the goalies stopped them all.

So, still 2-1 as the 3rd starts, Bathgate gets the next goal (the important goal) when Ritchie beats Nedelijkovic early on to make it 3-1 Rangers. Then something happened to the Miners – they spent most of the rest of the period in the Rangers end and they were relentless firing 25 SOGs in the period and finally with a minute 8 left, Norris beats Reimer and it’s a 1 goal game for the final minute. Again and again Reimer is peppered but again and again he rejects them to hold on to the 3-2 Rangers win! Whew. Final SOG tally – 41 for Pittsburgh, 26 for Bathgate. Both teams were 0 for 4 on the PP.
STARS (all BGR)
1. Donskoi 1 goal, 1 assist
2. Ritchie 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Reimer 39 saves

BATHGATE RANGERS

The 2 teams started the week with 48 points each (Jagr had played 2 more games) – so this is again a very important game with playoff implications on the line! And it came across just like a playoff game. Once again, the Rangers are outshot (36-26) and once again the Rangers win the Faceoff battle (55 – 45%) but what about the scores?

Period 1 – ZBad scores first 3 minutes in giving the Rangers the big early 1-0 lead. But then Donskoi goes off for tripping and this is Jagr – so they get the tying PP goal from Bergeron 2 minutes after ZBads score and it’s 1-1. And the Mullets weren’t finished as Ovechkin puts them up 2-1 3 minutes later. But then things settled into a tough game – scoring chances were there (17 for each team in the game), but the goalies and defenses were putting up stiff fights.

The 2nd period goes without any goal – Jagr fired 14 on Georgiev, but none past him. Rask stopped 8.

Then 25 seconds into the 3rd – Ritchie puts one past Rask to tie the game. He beats him top shelf as the Rangers controlled the opening face-off. But then it went back to you can’t get past my goalie – oh yeah, well you can’t get past mine and regulation ended and it was tied 2-2! So both teams get at least 1 point, who will get the extra one.

It didn’t take long to figure that out as that Russian Ovechkin beat Georgiev after taking the opening faceoff from Bergeron, cirles around, skates up, back to Bergeron, who sends it back to Ovechkin and he fires it over Georgiev’s shoulder into the back of the net (25 seconds into OT) – game over, 3-2 Jagr! (ugh) Oh well.
STARS
1. JAG – Ovechkin 2 goals
2. JAG – Bergeron 1 goal, 2 assists
3. BGR – Zibanejad 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well 3 home games, 5 points, but it’s too bad we had to give up the extra point to Jagr, but at least we got 1 out of it…..

Division rival Yellowknife comes to the Capone Center and looks to cut the heart out of the Cosa Nostra. A loss puts a huge burden on the chance of catching Toledo for the Norris Division title. 3rd period sees Keith rack up 2 more penalties to finish the night with 3. Before the last one, Wahlstrom ties the game, and then on the PP with 5 minutes to go, Wahlstrom gives his team the lead 3-2. Toledo goes to the limit the final 2 minutes, pulling the goalie, and it pays off at the bitter end, with Trocheck getting the equalizer with only 16 seconds left.

CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS

GILBERT SHARKS

1st period passes without any scoring but early in the 2nd Niederreiter opens the scoring for Gilbert. Not long after, Zacha ties it up for Charlotte but before the end of the 2nd period Gilbert adds 2 more goals from Kirivanta and Backstrom to take a 2 goal lead into the 3rd. With just over 5 minutes left, Marchand brings Charlotte within 1 but that is as close as it gets as Gilbert wins 3-2.

ALAMO DEFENDERS

GILBERT SHARKS

Alamo scores midway through the 1st to go up 1-0 and makes it a 2 goal lead when Zegras scores on a penalty shot. Tkachuk scores to cut the lead to 1 but Draisaitl scores to extend the lead again. Still in the 2nd period Backstrom once again cuts the lead to 1 but just before the end of the period Mcevoy score to pull away for good. Mittelstadt adds a 3rd period goal to get the final of 5-2 for Alamo.

LA GREAT DANES

GILBERT SHARKS

Division leading LA visits but Haula puts Gilbert up 1-0 in the 1st period. The lead holds until early in the 3rd period when Giroux ties it up. Just a couple minutes later, Burakovsky puts Gilbert back in the lead, but LA gets goals from Hintz and Nylander to take a 1 goal lead of their own. BUT Gilbert comes back with 2 goals (Backstrom and Keller) of their own in the final minute of play to pull off the upset.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Successful Home Stand for the Sharks with the upset of LA
Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: As the new year began, the Charlotte Dynamo had slid out of first place in the Atlantic (one point behind Cincinnati), having lost four of its last five to close the year, and hosted a key division game against Thunder Bay (the lone home game of the week).

THUNDER BAY NORWESTERS

@

CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS

The Buzzards’ freefall continued as the Nor’Westers overcame a 3-2 first-period deficit with four unanswered goals to ultimately win 6-5, in a game that leveled the landscape in a competitive Atlantic division that will likely be imperative to win in order to clinch a playoff spot. Thunder Bay improved to 17-15-0-3 with the win to threaten Charlotte for second place; last place Portland is not many points behind first place Cincinnati either.

Jeff Petry was credited with the game winning goal; it put Thunder Bay ahead 6-3 with about 15 minutes left in the contest. Charlotte goals by Carter Verhaeghe and newly acquired Ross Colton later in the third period made the final score close. Six different Nor’westers were credited with each goal and defenseman Seth Jones assisted on three. Ilya Samsonov turned away 33 shots for Thunder Bay. Verhaeghe led Charlotte with two goals.

Three stars:
Star 1: CHA Verhaeghe 2 G
Star 2: TBN Alexandre Texier 1 G, 2 Pts
Star 3: TBN Jones 3 A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A sudden rash of one-goal losses in regulation are absolutely torpedoing the Charlotte Buzzards’ season. Charlotte has lost six out of the last seven, including the loss this week at Gilbert — and five of those were a one-goal loss in regulation where no point was attained. The trade for Colton for offensive infusion seemed to come with the tradeoff of a defensive meltdown in this latest home defeat. Answers are scant at the moment.

The 1st period is a high scoring affair as Portland takes a 4-0 lead behind goals from Montour (1), Rakell (4), Batherson (6) and Olofsson (8). Bucks County responds though with goals from Oshie (23), McDavid (12), and SUzuki (14) to enter locker room behind 4-3.

After a scoreless 2nd period Portland extends their lead to 5-3 when Dvorak (7) finds the net and Schultz (2) puts the game away at the 18:29 mark to give Portland a 6-3 win,

Atlantic Division leading Cincinnati visits Portland and outshoots the Storm 43-23 but SOG is not always the story. Portland takes a 1st period 2-1 behind goals from Granlund (9) and Oloffson (9) while Cincinnati gets a goal from Karlsson (9).

Pacioretty (17) ties the game at the 10:14 mark of the third period and and the game heads to OT. With 1:05 into the extra period Tuch (8) gets the game winner for Cincinnati as they hold off the Storm 3-2

BRENTWOOD BANDITS

This game was a tale of two periods…

1st Period Kessel (8), Pavelski (23), and Kopitar (7) made it 3-0 Bandits.

Then in the 2nd Pavelski (24 PP) continues the onslaught to make it 4-0. Then suddenly Broissoit remembers he is not Vasilevskiy and Alamo rattles off 4 goals of their own with Crosby (5), Draisaitl (26), McAvoy (2) and Chychrun (7) tie it up 4-4!!

The third period sees both teams press with Alamo getting 12 SOG and Brentwood getting 13 SOG… but both netminders stand tall and we go to OT.

Alamo with 4 SOG and Brentwood with 3 SOG… but again the netminders stand their ground.

To the shootout we go!

Draisaitl against Brossoit… SAVED!
Pavelski against Smith… GOAL!
Crosby against Brossoit… SAVED!
Vatrano against Smith… SAVED!
Tolvanen against Brossoit… SAVED!!

And the Bandits win 5-4 in OT!

BATHGATE RANGERS

@

BRENTWOOD BANDITS

A division rivalry game that is always entertaining! The Bathgate Rangers come to town to try to figure out who is actually in 1st place in this division?

Bathgate comes out firing… the Bandits do not. But, despite the Rangers outshooting the Bandits 10-4 in the 1st, there is no score thanks to Vasilevskiy standing tall!

2nd period, the Bandits clamp down defensively and hold Bathgate to 6 SOG and getting 8 SOG themselves, but again… goaltenders aren’t having it.

So we go to the 3rd period scoreless…

At 10:47, former Ranger Dylan Strome scores his 3rd of the season against his former team… Bandits up 1-0!

That’s all Vasilevskiy would need as the Bandits win 1-0!! Lehner was good for the Rangers except for that one mistake. That’s how it goes in the MWHL sometimes…

PITTSBURGH MINERS

@

BRENTWOOD BANDITS

The last place Pittsburgh Miners head to the suburbs to go against the Brentwood Bandits. It’s the 15210 Zip Code vs the 15227 Zip Code. Both reside in the 412 area code, though. So it’s literally a cross town rival.

Bandits waste no time as Martinez (9) makes it 1-0 only 17 seconds into the game!

Less than a minute later, Vatrano makes it 2-0!

Larsson (3) tries to stop the bleeding as he scores on Brossoit to make it 2-1 Bandits, but Horvat (12) gets the two goal lead back before the end of the period to make it 3-1 going into the 2nd.

Kessel (9) on the PP at 3:45 of the 2nd makes it 4-1.

Then 35 seconds into the 3rd period Pavelski (25) makes it 5-1.

Time winding down, Lars Eller (4) pours sale on the wound as the Bandits win this cross town rivalry game by a score of 6-1!

Brossoit with a 7.2 rating, outplays Nedeljkovic with a 9.6 rating! Ouch!

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Bandits manage to win all three home games (and one on the road) to have a very productive and successful week!

CHA 5, CIN 4 (OT)

Brad Marchand’s second goal of the night with 26 seconds remaining in overtime gave the 5-4 win to Charlotte. The Buzzards completed a rally from four goals down to win the game.

Cincinnati raced to a 4-0 lead at the first intermission and seemed to have the game locked up. The play of the first period? Ilya Sorokin’s stopping of Max Pacioretty’s penalty shot with the score at 2-0 midway through the first. The penalty shot was the result of a slash on Alex Pietrangelo on a breakaway.

The Buzzards got two goals in the second, the latter on a tip in by Pavel Zacha with less than a half minute to go. In the third, Charlotte knotted the game up with goals by Marchand and Jonathan Marchessault with three and a half minutes to play.

The win moved Charlotte into the top spot in the Atlantic Division.

THUNDER BAY NORWESTERS

@

CINCINNATI INFERNO

CIN 5, TBN 4 (SO)

Max Pacioretty’s second goal of the third period with six second remaining forced overtime in this one and Alex Tuch scored the only goal of the shootout in the 5-4 Cincinnati win over Thunder Bay.

Pacioretty was part of all the Inferno’s scoring, collecting two goals and two assists. John Carlson had a goal and an assist for a three-point night. Seth Jones had a pair of assists for the NorWesters.

This time it was the Inferno that rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to force the extra session — collecting three lamp lighters in the final frame.

Connor Hellebuyck picked up the win with 25 saves and three stops in the shootout session. Ilya Samsonov took the loss despite 35 saves and a stop in the shootout.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Cincinnati welcomes the new year with a 1-1-1 homestand. As we approach the midway point of the season, it is clear this team will be making a decision to buy or sell in short order.
