WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1-1
LA Great Danes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte and Thunder Bay, both from the Atlantic Division, visit LA this week. It’s week 5 already, amazing that the season is 1/4 over already after this week!

————————————————————————

Charlotte Buzzards
@
LA Great Danes
Broken record – the Danes get blown out at home again by a 6-1 score. It’s over early, with 2 goals by Charlotte in the game’s first 5 minutes and it’s 4-0 after the 1st period. I have had little patience with the league’s worst goaltending this year, so Igor Shesterkin is pulled after the ugly 1st period. 1st period chances were 8-8, but Carey Price was on his game, and Shesterkin not so much.

Price appeared to be heading to his 2nd shutout of the season, but he was spoiled by a Roope Hintz goal with only 9 seconds left in the game.

Ilya Mikheyev was the #1 star with 1G-2A and +4 rating. Mitch Marner and Anders Lee were the other stars with 1G-1A each. William Nylander for LA had a frustrating night with 7 SOG, 6 scoring chances, but no points.

————————————————————–

Thunder Bay NorWesters
@
LA Great Danes
Well, the lineup changes made at home in week 4 did not work out so well against Charlotte. So for this one, William Nylander was moved down to the 3rd line and the top 3 lines and all 3 D pairings are all new combinations – nothing to lose at this point.

And the new 3rd line of Hintz-Henrique-Nylander have an amazing first period – 4 goals! It’s 4-1 LA after one. In period 2, though, Kyle Connor makes it 4-2, and when Darnell Nurse takes a 4-minute high-sticking penalty with 3 minutes left in the period, the lead does not look so secure.

But the Danes kill off the double-minor, and in the 3rd period they capitalize on a 5-minute power play when Barkov scores to make Landeskog pay for his elbowing major penalty. No more scoring after that, and the Great Danes come away with the 5-2 victory.

The Danes’ 3rd line swept the star selections with all 3 players at +4 for the night and all points coming in the 1st period. Adam Henrique and Roope Hintz each had 2G-1A, and William Nylander assisted on all 4 goals by the line.

—————————————————————–

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A split at home, but another blow out loss leaves the team feeling a bit snakebit and wondering how to stop these poundings they keep getting. Igor Shesterkin doesn’t seem ready for MWHL play this year, so it may be a while before he gets another chance in net.

Thunder Bay must also be wondering what’s going on – their second 5-2 loss of the season to LA leaves them 0-2 against the Danes and 9-4-1 against everyone else.

Gilbert Sharks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Gilbert has 2 home games this week versus Brentwood and Portland

——————————————————————–

Brentwood Bandits
@
Gilbert Sharks
Gilbert starts the game hot as they have done all year with goals from Fiala, Hedman, and Danault to take a 3-0 lead at the end of the 1st period. Josi scores for Brentwood in the 2nd but Keller is able to get it back for Gilbert to maintain the 3 goal lead going into the dreaded 3rd Period. It looks like more of the same when Eller scores early in the period to cut the lead to 2 but Gilbert is able to keep it scoreless the rest of the way to take the upset win 4-2

——————————————————-

Portland Storm
@
Gilbert Sharks
Portland comes in hungry for their 1st win but Gilbert starts hot again with Mackinnon scoring just 13 seconds into the game. Backlund evens the score for Portland and the 1st period ends 1-1. Gilbert gets goals from Holden and Carlo while Portland adds one from Rakell so Gilbert takes another lead into the 3rd Period. Fiala scores 28 seconds into the 3rd period to extend the lead to 2.Montour scores for Portland to cut it back to one but Gilbert holds on the rest of the way with Panarin adding a late empty netter for a 5-3 win.

——————————————————————

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Gilbert gets two much needed victories as they hope to claw their way back above .500
Toledo Walleye
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Black Aces visit the Huntington Centre for the only home game for Toledo this week.

—————————————————-

New Jersey Black Aces
@
Toledo Walleye
New Jersey 6, Toledo 3 – Ominous start for Toledo when Cennak trips Labanc on a breakaway, and then Labanc converts the penalty shot to put NJ up 1. Toledo strikes back a couple minutes later, powerplay, when Backstrom knocks in a rebound shot. Tuch and Yamamoto give the Black Aces a big lead with goals late in the 1st, only to have Kucherov answer seconds later, and pull the home team within 1 at intermission, 3-2.

Defensive 2nd period sees the goalies combine for 17 saves, and only one goal from Pettersson on a bomb from the blue line, going to the 3rd period tied 3-3

3rd period is even with each team 11 SOG, but Thatcher Demko lacks a bit of focus, allowing 3 pucks to pass by, Beauvillier, Forsberg and Pulock put the damper on the home team crowd and get away with a laugher, 6-3.

1st star – Yamamoto 1G 2pts
2nd – Tuch 1G 2pts
3rd – Puloch 1G 2pts

————————————————————–

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Disappointing home game, getting pounded by New Jersey. Hopefully we find some luck on the road and don’t sink to far in the division.

Toledo Walleye

Bathgate Rangers
Rangers struggle this year with closing games and sure enough 1:10 into period 3, the Walleye score – Barrie!. However, that made it 3-1 Rangers as Ryan Strome and Grimaldi scored in the 1st. Provorov netted a PP goal in the 2nd on the only PP chance they had. Then the Walleye go for broke and ZBad adds an EN goal in the final minute for a Bathgate 4-1 win! Toledo did out attack the Rangers 69 attempts, 39 on goal to 42 attempts and 29 on goal, but the Rangers took the scoring chance lead 15-13.
STARS (all BGR)
1. Reimer 38 saves
2. Provorov 1 goal
3. Zibanejad 1 goal————————————————————
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 for 1, that works – but then Toledo’s been dropping a bunch this week so who knows – but 2 points is 2 pirnts!
Portland Storm
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The winless Portland Storm only has one home game this session – against the LA Great Danes

——————————————————————

LA Great Danes
@
Portland Storm
Portland sat out their leading scorer Victor Olofsson due to Covid 19 issues and things were not looking good to get their first win of the season. Rookie Joel Farabee was moved onto the second line and responded with his first goal of the season in the first period as the faithful Portland crown saw a glimmer of hope.

With some renewed energy Palat (5) finds the back of the net 4 minutes into the second period and the fans rushed to get their beers at the intermission finally having some hope. Portland played aggressive defense in the third period but with 37 seconds remaining in the game Ehlers (5) got LA on the board when they pulled the goalie. It seemed like not a single person in the crowd was breathing as LA pounded the netwith shot after shot but Portland hung on and got their first win.

Star #1 – Holtby 31 saves
Star #2 – Palat 1 goal
Star #3 – Farabee 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland wins! Portland wins! Portland wins!
Cincinnati Inferno
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Cincinnati Inferno host a pair of underperforming teams this week in Portland and Gilbert.
Portland Storm
@
Cincinnati Inferno
PORTLAND 5, CINCINNATI 2

Portland’s first-ever road win comes at The Incinerator, as Max Domi’s natural hat trick in the first period sets the tone. The three goals came in the span of 3:31, which is also the least amount of time a Storm player has needed to complete a hat trick.

Portland build the lead to 5-0 late in the second to secure the win and Cincinnati spent the remainder of the game chasing its tail to try to catch up. Braden Holtby stopped 29 shots in getting his first win of the season.

Gilbert Sharks
@
Cincinnati Inferno
GILBERT 2, CINCINNATI 0

Charlie Coyle opened the scoring for the Sharks at 1:07 of the first and Gilbert held up the goal the rest of the way. Artemi Panarin added an insurance power play goal at 3:07 of the second.

Pavel Francouz was stellar in net, turning away all 29 shots he faced.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: More tinkering is to come for Cincinnati, which fired its head coach at Christmas of last year and simmed all the way to a division title. Could a similar fate be waiting this season? Could a fire sale be coming? Stay tuned…..
Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Buzzards, who have not set the world on fire at home, hosted Alamo in its only home game this week.
Alamo Defenders
@
Charlotte Buzzards
The Defenders defended and despite being outshot 32-27, turned away the Buzzards 5-2. Trailing 2-1 after a goal by Charlotte right winger Mitch Marner very late in the second, Alamo answered with four quick-strike goals against a suddenly faltering Carey Price.

Steve Stamkos and Zach Parise scored goals within 30 seconds of each other with under four minutes to play in the second period to overcome the 2-1 deficit. The Defenders added two third period goals from defenseman Jakob Chychrun and glue guy Drake Caggiula; the latter goal came on the power play with 10:04 left in the third.

Stars (all from Alamo):
Star 1: ALA Stamkos 1 G, 2 Pts
Star 2: ALA Chychrun 1 G 2 Pts
Star 3: Sid the Kid with a goal

Notables: Robin Lehner turned in a strong 30-save performance in outplaying Price. Lehner saved 12 in the first period to keep his team in it. Alamo overcame a 31-27 FOW deficit.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Simply stated, Charlotte, a team that seemingly struggles for goals at home, could not keep up with Alamo’s firepower, especially as the game progressed.
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games this week vs New Jersey and California. Thunder Bay moved up into a tie for 1st place in the Atlantic division. We are hoping to edge out in front of Cincinnati this week.

New jersey counter in the 2nd period with 3 unanswered goals of their own to tie the game at 3-3. Yamamoto(1), Hartman (2) and Shattenkirk (2). LA Great Danes

Bucks County Raccoons
Late 2nd period goals by Bellemare and Virtanen broke open a tie game and propelled the Bucks County Raccoons to a 3-1 win over the LA Great Danes. Despite being outshot 35-17 by LA, the Racs actually had more scoring chances for the contest (14-12). Ben Bishop was solid in goal with 34 saves to give BC it’s win in the first game of the home stand.
Thunder Bay NorWesters
@
Bucks County Raccoons
Checking? What checking? In a game reminiscent of the 80’s, Bucks County scored 3 goals (two empty netters) in the final 2 minutes to come away with a 7-4 win over the Thunder Bay NorWesters. Wilson and Kane had 2 goals each for the Racs, who outshot the visitors to the tune of 40-23. To their credit Thunder Bay came back twice to tie the game, but a Wilson goal with 1:40 left gave BC the edge they needed.
Jagr Mullets
@
Bucks County Raccoons
Powerful Jagr came to town and the BC Raccoons played a perfect game…..for 57 minutes. But with less than 3 minutes to go Jagr scored twice to tie the game at 2 and send it into OT. Connor McDavid sent the fans home happy when he scored at 1:31 of overtime to give BC the win. BCR blocked 24 shots during the game as the Mullets fired 72 shot attempts compared to 36 for the Racs.
