Lafayette Homesteaders @ Jagr Mullets Next up is Lafayette (loved him in True Blood), with the always dangerous Kucherov and Eichel.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Three for three at home this week, with a huge matchup on the road vs. Brentwood (with all of the big guns in the lineup together, and ex-Bandit Kuemper in net).
LA Great Danes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Home games this week versus the Cincinnati Inferno and Gilbert Sharks
Cincinnati Inferno @ LA Great Danes Jumbo Joe Thornton opens the scoring, but former Dane John Carlson ties the game for Cincy with just 9 seconds left in period 1. Mark Scheifele’s goal midway through the 2nd gives the Danes a 2-1 lead after a very defensive 2nd period. Despite 2 power plays for each team including a 4-minute Cincy PP late in the period, there were only 5 total scoring chances in the period.

The 3rd period was a different story. Brayden Point quickly tied the game in the first minute of the 3rd, but then Frederick Andersen came up big, facing 11 chances in the 3rd and only letting in that early goal. Dane goals by Teravainen and Pietrangelo gave LA a 4-2 lead, and Brayden Schenn’s empty-netter and a Travis Zajac last-minute goal finished off the Inferno in a 6-2 route for the Great Danes.

Gilbert Sharks @ LA Great Danes A home and home series this week between the bottom two teams in the Pacific and the MWHL. It was a back-and-forth affair that ultimately was decided by special teams.

Pominville scored first for Gilbert, but goals by Thornton and Brodin put LA up 2-1 after 1. Max Domi scored the only goal of the 2nd on the PP to tie the game 2-2 heading into the 3rd.

It was a wide-open 3rd period with 6 goals scored. Panarin and Scheifele traded early goals before David Savard put Gilbert ahead 4-3. A furious finish started with a Brayden Schenn 4-minute double minor with 4:01 left. Nathan MacKinnon’s PPG makes it 5-3 Gilbert, but Teuvo Teravainen gets a SHG with LA’s goalie pulled with 1:39 left to bring the Danes back with one at 5-4. The Danes gain possession and again pull their goalie while short-handed, but this time Mark Giordano seals the win for Gilbert with an empty-net PPG.

The Sharks win 6-4, going 4-5 on the PP. Domi and Panarin lead the way with 1G-1A each for the Sharks.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A win and a loss at home. Lots of penalties, the Danes going 1-8 on the PP and giving up 4 PPG’s in 9 chances. But the Danes show some firepower outside of the PP with 10 goals scored in the 2 games, with Teuvo Teravainen leading the way with 2G-3A.
Brentwood Bandits
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A pair of home games including one against the best team in the league… those Jagoff Mullets!
Jagr Mullets @ Brentwood Bandits For brotherly bragging rights…

The Jags fire 15 shots on Vasilevskiy, but Rielly (6) scores the only goal on the PP to put JAG up 1-0 in the 1st. Debrusk (12) ties it 1-1. We end the 1st tied.

2nd period sees the Bandits fire 16 shots on former Bandit, Kuemper but only manage one goal… Johnson (10) scoots one past Kuemper to put the Bandits up 2-1.

Head into the 3rd… very even period. Shots were 11-10 in favor of Jagr.

No score until 18:25 when Rielly (7) scores his 2nd of the night on the PP to tie it 2-2 with only 1:35 left to play!

Looks like an OT game is on the way except that Debrusk (13) scores 23 seconds later to put the Bandits up 3-2!!

Ovie and the Jags try in vain as Vasilevskiy robs Ovie point blank! Tavares also blocks a shot by Matthews with 8 seconds left to seal the deal as this “Battle of the Brothers” goes to the younger and better looking one… 😉

Star 1 Debrusk 2G
Star 2 Rielly 2G
Star 3 Vasilevskiy 32 saves

Notables
JAG Kuemper 33 saves, Ovechkin 8 shots
BWB Tavares 15 faceoffs won

Lafayette Homesteaders @ Brentwood Bandits After such an emotional win against bitter division rival Jagr, will the Bandits be too tired to play Lafayette with Kucherov and Eichel gunning?

Matt Murray gets the start in goal against Sergei Bobrovsky.

Lafayette strikes first early with Labanc (11) putting them up 1-0.

The Bandits would outshoot the Homesteaders 14-4 in the 1st, but come away empty as it ends 1-0.

To the 2nd, Lafayette outshoots Brentwood 13-7, but the Bandits come out on top in the 2nd as Eller (3) and Vatrano (4) tickle the twine to put the Bandits up 2-1.

The 3rd sees the shots nearly even (11-9 in favor of Brentwood) but it’s the Bandits who score 25 seconds into the period when Josi (2) puts one past Bob to put them up 3-1.

Murray was stellar in net, saving 25 of 26 as the Bandits go on to win 3-1.

NOBODY scored on the PP as Lafayette goes 0-3 and the Bandits go 0-7 (ouch!)

Star 1 Josi 1G, 1A
Star 2 Vatrano 1G
Star 3 Eller 1G

Notables – NONE

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Shocked to beat Jagr. Vasilevskiy and the D was the reason as they shut down Ovie, Matthews, Bergeron, and company.

Despite 2 home wins, reporters knew better than to mention the playoffs as coach Tom Atkins smiled like a proud father (or a playground bully?) at the well behaved local media.

“Beating the hated Jagoffs is a great feather in our cap, but we know how good they are, and despite how good our defense and goaltending are, we are basically a 1 line team right now. So, if I were a subtle person I would drop a hint to the front office about our needs, and how we need to decide if we are going to make trades to go for it, or to rebuild. I’m not getting any #$@&ing younger, so… there’s that.”

Alamo Defenders
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Alamo plays host for all four games this week.
Brentwood Bandits @ Alamo Defenders DeBrusk and Vatrano give Brentwood a 2-0 lead after one period. The Defenders get three consecutive goals from Draisaitl, Glendening, and Marchand. Johnson scores his 10th for the Bandits in the 3rd to force a overtime period. Neither team scores and we go to a shootout. Alamo gets the 1st goal, but then Brentwood gets shoot out goals from Kessel and Konecny.

Brentwood 4 Alamo 3 – shootout.

1st – Glendening
2nd – Marchand
3rd – Johnson

Cincinnati Inferno @ Alamo Defenders Perron and Skinner start off the scoring for Cincinnati. Alamo gets two goals by defensemen Greene and Ekblad. In OT, Stamkos scores and the Defenders to win the game.

Alamo 3 Brentwood 2 – overtime

1st – Greene
2nd – Ekblad
3rd – Stamkos

LA Great Danes @ Alamo Defenders No goals in the 1st period. The Defenders score three goals in the 2nd period. Greene, Draisaitl, and Marchand score. LA gets a goal by Ehlers. Alamo scores the final goal on a Hinostroza goal.

Alamo 4 LA 1

1st – Lehner 35 saves
2nd – Hinostroza
3rd – Draisaitl

California Regulators @ Alamo Defenders Big game as the 1st and 2nd place teams in the Pacific square off. California scores 40 seconds in the game on a Huberdeau goal. In the 2nd, Stamkos ties it up. Then, in the 3rd with 1:56 remaining, Matheson scores his 2nd goal. Alamo nips California, 2-1.

Alamo 2 California 1

1st – Lehner 31 saves
2nd – Matheson
3rd – Stamkos

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Alamo takes 7 out of 8 points with 3 wins and 1 shootout loss.
Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Checking the schedule and Bathgate finds they have FOUR home games this week – three of them against some of the best (and 1 of those IS THE BEST). We’ve been near the .500 mark, but we’re young, so we take some lumps, but have fun….
Yellowknife Braves @ Bathgate Rangers Rangers play the first 2/3 very strong scoring 4 goals (3 in the 2nd period) to get up 4-0. Then we kind of coast for 20 minutes and hang on while the Braves score 2 to cut the final score to 4-2 Bathgate. Rangers goals – McCann, ZBad (PP), Anderson, and Zadorov. The Knifes broke through in the 3rd on goals from Aho and Williams – Williams scored with 6 1/2 to go on the PP, but Rangers held them tough the rest of the way. Aho won 18 faceoffs as the Braves controlled that stat winning 54% of them.
STARS (all BRG)
1. Anderson 1 goal (Game winner)
2. Zibanejad 1 goal
3. McCann 1 goal
California Regulators @ Bathgate Rangers Pac division leaders – California – skate into the Round Garden fall behind 1-0 after 1 as Kotkaniemi scores early. However, the Regulators come back with 2 unanswered goals in the 2nd to gain a 2-1 lead. Fowler and Gaudreau get the goals. 2-1 after 2 did not predict was would happen in the 3rd.
THIRD PERIOD – California takes 21 SOG (7 more than the 1st and 2nd combined) and they score 3 times. However, it was the Rangers who score 1st in the 3rd when Giroux scores 4 1/2 minutes in to tie the game. But then the first Regulator goal of the period is by former Ranger Eric Staal and it gives them a 3-2 lead (PP Goal just minutets after the Rangers tied it up). Then 16 seconds later, Vrana scores for Bathgate to retie the game 3-3! But 2 1/2 minutes later, Getzaf scores to get California back in the lead, 4-3. Just more than a minute and a half later – Subban scores to retie the game. Then about a minute later, Ferland scores to put Bathgate up 5-4. So 6 goals in the 1st 10:41 of the 3rd. And the Rangers hold on to the precarious 5-4 lead for the next 9 minutes and 17 seconds – however, they needed to hold it for 9 minutes and 19 seconds to win. California’s Staal gets his 2nd goal of the game with 2 seconds remaining. And it’s 5-5 and we go to OT.
OT – California does not get a shot during the OT and with just of a minute gone, Anderson nails Faulk, scoops up the puck, goes in on a breakway and shoots and scores for the 6-5 OT win!!
STARS:
1. CAL – Staal 2 goals
2. CAL – Gaudrea 1 goal, 2 assists
3. BGR – Anderson – 1 goal, 1 assist (and the winning goal!)
Brentwood Bandits @ Bathgate Rangers Can the strange fortunes for Bathgate this week continue? YES!
Bathgate plays a strong defensive game – Brentwood did lead with 30-22 in SOG and they won 52% of the faceoffs – but Halak stops 29 of their 30 shots – only one he missed was a quick goal (51 seconds into the 2nd period) by Kessel.
However, the Rangers got 2 1st period goals – Buchnevich and Ferland and then 2 3rd period goals – Hischier and Hertl to skate home with a big 4-1 win!
STARS (all BRG):
1. Halak 29 saves
2. Ferland 1 goal
3. Buchnevich 1 goal
Jagr Mullets @ Bathgate Rangers Can this really continue? Can we do a sweep this week? Can we beat the best team in the league AND our division leader? NO!!!!…..ugh
Jordan Staal – scores in the 1st, 3 minutes in. Lindholm ties it up for Bathgate 3 minutes into the 2nd.! But then Couture and Bergeron score 2nd period goals for Jagr to move it to 3-1 and that would be it. Hischier scores midway through the 3rd, but the Rangers go to tie it up late and Bergeron and Ovechkin get empty netters to run the final to 5-2 Jagr.
Stars (all JAG)
1. Bergeron 2 goals, 1 assist
2. Kuemper 33 saves
3. Rielly 3 assistsStats were about even, but Kuemper outplayed Lundqvist….
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 wins in 4 games, not bad. Turned a corner…probably not… but we show promise (but their may be some health issues next year).
Gilbert Sharks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Gilbert has 2 home games this week versus Toledo and LA
Toledo Walleye @ Gilbert Sharks Gilbert scores first just 56 seconds into the game but Toledo comes back quickly leading 3-1 by the end of the 1st period. Gilbert ties it up again in the 2nd but Toledo pulls away for the win with 3 goals in the 3rd. Elias Petterson gets the hat trick in the victory. Final Score Toledo 6, Gilbert 3
LA Great Danes @ Gilbert Sharks A battle between the leagues two worst teams. LA has a 4-2 lead going into the last 4 minutes but Gilbert gets goals from Atkinson and Panarin, the latter with just 1 minute left to tie the score and take the game into a shootout. Anders Nillsson stands tall for Gilbert in the shootout and Mackinnon and Atkinson score to give Gilbert the win. Final Gilbert 5, LA 4
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Gilbert gets a win in a shootout but the outlook is dim for this team.
Toledo Walleye
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two division rivals come to town for some hockey, Yellowknife and Bucks County. A real chance to make some noise, and gain some ground.
Yellowknife Braves @ Toledo Walleye Braves 4, Walleye 1 – The Braves come out smoking, getting goals from Monahan, Williams, Tatar and Palmieri, to grab a 4-0 lead with 6 minutes to go in the first period. Toledo finally stops all that, and gets one lucky shot (Arvidsson) just before the period ends to make it 4-1.

After that, its all defense and the next 36 shots go nowhere good. The game ends 4-1.

In spite of a nice 31 save performance, the game gives no love to Fleury in goal.

1st star – Monahan 1G 2pts
2nd – Tatar 1G 2pts
3rd – Williams 1G 2pts

Bucks County Raccoons @ Toledo Walleye Toledo 3, Bucks County 2 – Both teams get on teh board early. First Dadonov for Toledo, then Compher with the answer for the Racoons. Still in the 1st, Arvidsson makes the visitors pay for a Meier hooking penalty. 1st period ends 2-1 Toledo.

2nd – Raccoons with the equalizer one minute in, Meier trying to make amends for his penalty in the first. Less than a minute later, the ROY candidate Pettersson gets his 20th of the year to put the Walleye up 3-2.

After that , its all defense, alot of good saves on green dot and blue dot shots. It all culminates in a wild last minutes as Dubnyk saves 4, all with rebounds and follow up shots that died in front of the net.

1st star – Pettersson 1G 2pts
2nd – Dadonov 1G 2pts
3rd – Arvidsson 1G

Once again no love for 2 good goalie performances.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Walleye were able to nick the division leader and buy a little time to get their stuff together, but time is slowly running out. The loss was a big disappointment with the total collapse of the defense in the 1st period.
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games at the Thunderdome. Charlotte and then Cincinnati both division rivals.
Charlotte Buzzards @ Thunder Bay NorWesters Landeskog opens the scoring with his 14th of the season giving Thunder Bay a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Buzzards road back with goals by Pavelski (20) and Hamilton (6) to take the lead 2-1 after the 2nd period.

After a curt talk by head coach Jiri Fischer, the Nor’Westers quickly tie the score at 2-2 on a goal by Nyquist (5) and then jump into the lead 3-2 when Connor scores his 11th of the season. Unable to slam the door as Marner locks the score at 3-3 after 60 minutes.

We are headed to OT. Gabe Landeskog scores his 2nd of the game and 15th of the season to give the Nor’Westers a 4-3 overtime win.

Cincinnati Inferno @ Thunder Bay NorWesters Ouch! The inferno come out hot and scorch the Nor’Westers twice in the opening period. Lead 2-0 on goals by Skinner (11) and Pacioretty (8).

Thunder Bay rallies in the 2nd scoring twice to tie the game at 2-2. Goals by Athanasiou (15) and Barkov (12).

The 3rd period see Barkov score again his 13th and then Thunder Bay slams the door. Final score Thunder Bay 3 and Cincinnati (2)

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two wins at home with solid play by all teams. Two 1 goal games. Thunder Bay’s goalies Pekka Rinne and Thomas Greiss have been solid in the early season.
Chicago Cosa Nostra
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 2 Home games at the Capone Center this week for the Cosa Nostra.

Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte, clinging onto second place in the Atlantic division, hosted third-place Cincinnati in a key division matchup on December 13.
Cincinnati Inferno @ Charlotte Buzzards It took awhile this late into the season, but the Buzzards finally demonstrated the balanced offensive attack and depth the team was confident it had all along: Six of the 12 Buzzards forwards accounted for one goal apiece as Charlotte doused the Inferno 6-2. The goals (in order they were scored) came from Anders Lee, Dylin Larkin, Joe Pavelski, fourth-liner Alex Kilorn, Mitch Marner (who has underwhelmed much of the season but finally registered his sixth goal) and Vladimir Tarasenko, the latter scoring the lone goal of the third period to close out the scoring.

For Cincinnati, Cody Eakin, scored the first Inferno goal that tied the game early 1-1 5:47 into the contest. A turning point of the game came moments later however: Lee was handed a slashing penalty but Larkin gave Charlotte the lead for good on a breakaway shorthanded goal 8:46 in the first. Pavelski, vying for the league lead in goals with Jake Guentzel and Alex Ovechkin, scored what proved to be the game winning goal 10:23 of the first period.

The Inferno’s David Perron narrowed the lead to 3-2 with a goal halfway into the high-scoring first, but Killorn chipped in his goal late in the first period for a two-goal Charlotte cushion and Buzzards goalie Carey Price (33 saves) was spotless the rest of the way.

Marner’s early power play goal in the second period put Charlotte ahead 5-2 and knocked Connor Hellebuyck (12 saves) out of the game in favor of Jacob Markstrom.

Ironically, it was one of the few games that Charlotte has been outshot this season (35-22) yet still grabs the win in a home arena where it has struggled.

Marner, Larkin and Tarasenko were stars 1 thru 3 respectively.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: In one of its most complete efforts of the season from an offensive and defensive standpoint, Charlotte gets a key division win at home against a worthy and potent division foe. The battle for the upper echelon of this division promises to be a fierce one.
Bucks County Raccoons
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Games against the high flying offense of Charlotte and division battles against Yellowknife and Chicago….
Charlotte Buzzards @ Bucks County Raccoons Charlotte scored 3 goals in the first period and then 3 more in a span of 5 minutes in the 2nd period on the way to an 8-4 route of the home team Raccoons. Charlotte went 3 for 3 on the PP and registered just 26 shots on goal, but have of those were of the good chance variety. Jack Campbell, in the nets for the Raccoons, couldn’t stop anything, saying that the puck ‘looked like golf balls out there’….
Yellowknife Braves @ Bucks County Raccoons Reeling from their home loss to Charlotte while giving up a season high 8 goals, the Bucks County Raccoons exploded out of the gate scoring 4 times in the opening period which led the way to a 6-2 win over Yellowknife. The golf balls looked bigger this game for Campbell.
Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Bucks County Raccoons In a battle to determine who would sit atop the division in December, the Bucks County Raccoons again came out with guns a blazing and jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period, then took cover as David Pasternak tried the win the game himself for ‘da mob’,and held on for a 4-3 victory. Pasternak had all 3 goals for Chicago, put 9 shots on net and had 5 other shot attempts that weren’t on net.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Took 4 of 6 points on the week, but a concern has arisen as the normally tight checking Racs gave up 13 goals in the 3 games on home ice.
California Regulators
Gilbert Sharks @ California Regulators California beats the Sharks 7-4.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: California wins its only home game this week.

Guentzel out of town, games simmed.
