Bathgate Rangers Bathgate is home for only one game this week – in fact, they only have 3 games scheduled this week – so they will try to make the best of it. They host the California Regulators – not as strong as last year ….
California Regulators @ Bathgate Rangers Rangers accomplish something that has been rare for them lately, they out shoot a team, 38-24. Still lag in the hits, 23-17 California.
Regulators start the scoring when Komarov (6) puts one past Rinne. But then Shattenkirk gets a charging call, and it’s a big one, 5 minutes and the Rangers go to work scoring 2 PP goals – Eriksson (9) and Killorn (14). They put 17 shots on goal in the first and exit the period leading 2-1. Rangers fire 13 on goal in the 2nd, but Grubauer stops them all.. Schmaltz then gets a 4 min high sticking call as the 3rd period starts. Buchnevich converts (7) for the Rangers 3rd PP goal. However the next goal during the power play is a SH goal by Pageau (6) cutting the Rangers lead to 3-2. But the next goal during the same PP is the 4th PP goal by the Rangers as Hornqvist (14) slaps one in. Rangers finally get an even strength goal at the 14:10 mark by Anderson (19) to put the game away, 5-2. Rangers go 4 for 7 on the PP and record NO PENALTIES on their own players – that’s probably a first!
STARS (all BGR)
1. Hornqvist 1 goal, 1 assist
2. Eriksson 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Killor 1 goal, 1 assist
Weekly Summary: That’s it, 1 game, Rangers 5-2 over the Regulators.

Hampton Blizzard Hampton chugs into the 4th quarter of the season with only one home game – but an important one – against the division rival Corktown Suds. The Suds trail the Blizzard by only 9 points heading into the home stretch with Hampton in jeopardy of losing ground thanks to needed rests being given to Peter Stastny, Andrei Burakovsky and Evgeni Malkin. Corktown meanwhile is not without its own usage restraints with Kari Lehtonen taking the nets ahead of Thomas Greiss as the Suds face off against Carey Price.
Corktown Suds @ Hampton Blizzard Fearing the worst in this game as a result of the offensive production sitting up in the Hampton pressbox, Blizzard coach Scotty Bowman had the suddenly de-monthballed pine-sitters firing at cardboard targets pasted to his garage door for 12 hours prior to the game against Corktown.
No disrespect to Kari Lehtonen, but the Blizzard was eager to capitalize on the sharp drop in netminding talent from #1 Suds’ keeper Thomas Greiss to Lehtonen.
… and the Blizzard beat him like a rented mule.
The first period play was fairly even with the difference being that Carey Price made two great saves in the Hampton nets while Lehtonen failed to make two great saves that resulted in two pretty good goals by the Blizzard.
Fourth-line centre Christian Dvorak opened the scoring for Hampton at 13:01 when he sniped a one-timer in the slot off a pass by fresh-out-of-the-shrinkwrap Colton Sissons. Vincent Trocheck made it 2-0 five minutes later when he tipped a Hail Mary slapshot by Andrej Sekera between the legs of Lehtonen.
Corktown pressed in the 2nd period outshooting the Blizzard 13-8, but it was Lehtonen that got squished. Inconsistent Josh Ho-Sang made it 3-0 Hampton five minutes in firing a shot high stick-side past Lehtonen with Anders Lee adding a late period goal for Hampton to make it 4-0.
The Suds threw caution to the wind in the 3rd period and it resulted in a lot of shots (16-14 for Corktown) and a couple of goals … by Hampton. A defensive breakdown at mid-period left Mikko Rantanen all alone in front of Lehtonen and he easily tapped in Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s slapshot to make it 5-0 and then capped it with another tip-in of an Ekman-Larsson slapper on the power play late in the 3rd period.
And 6-0 is how it ended. A pleasant and most welcome surprise for us.
Notables from the game … Carey Price (1st star) made 39 saves – several of them great ones that kept the Suds off the board; Mikko Rantanen (2nd star) got two insurance tip-in goals; Oliver Ekman-Larsson (3rd star) registered 3 assists and logged 30 minutes at the Blizzard blueline; Corktown’s Wayne Simmonds counted 10 shots (!!!) on Price.
Scoring Summary:

Weekly Summary: Hampton snags a much-needed win against the Suds to extend their lead temporarily to 11 points.

Jagr Mullets Jagr has 3 games at home with a chance to keep their dim playoff hopes alive. Two of the opponents were major trade partners with the Mullets this season – will the ghosts of trades past come back to haunt them?

The Mullets are also resting two of their best defensemen due to usage restrictions. Can Matt Hunwick and Jamie Oleksiak step up, or will they crack?

Bathgate Rangers @ Jagr Mullets When these two square off, it never disappoints. And the pattern most certiainly holds! Patrik Laine (30) strikes at 1:46 for the Mullets to open the scoring, and exactly a minute later Gyrba (1) scores his first of the year.

I swear, our squad has given up more 1st goals of the season to opposing players than any other team – it should be an official stat.

Bathgate dominates early play in the 2nd, with goals by Zajac (7) and Klingberg (10). But the Mullets strike right back – Ovie (24) and Granlund (19) score midway and we have a 3-3 game.

In the 3rd, Jagr gets two quick strikes 6 minutes in — Radulov (14) and Laine (31). With a 2 goal lead, they slow it down to milk the clock. Fatal mistake.

Bathgate scores two by Klingberg (11) and Eriksson (9) to tie it up with 3 minutes to go.

Then the dagger in the heart. Killorn (14) beats Quick at 18:22 to steal the game 6-5 and greatly damage the dim playoff hopes of the Mullets.

Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Jagr Mullets Next up is Long Beach, a frequent Mullet trading partner and also a team fighting for a playoff spot. Lots of familiar faces on both sides.

Jagr wastes no time, with Derek Ryan (4) scoring only 55 seconds into the game. At 7:41, Bozak (6) evens it up for Long Beach. But former Ice Dog Kadri (33) pots one at 9:57 to put the Mullets up 2-1.

In the 2nd, another former Long Beach alum scores – Mikael Granlund (20) at 17:32. 40 seconds later, Patrik Laine (32) continues his late season surge to pad the lead to 3 goals.

But Long Beach isn’t done — former Mullet captain Jeff Carter (21) scores at 10:19 of the 3rd to make it interesting. But Jagr stands tall and holds on to win it 4-2.

Jagr is rarely outshot, but they are 37-30 in this one. Maybe we’ve been doing it wrong?

Brentwood Bandits @ Jagr Mullets Big bad brotherly Brentwood comes to town, with their league leading 91 points. With key players rested, the Mullets we’re expecting much from this game. An offensive onslaught was likely.

Instead, the fans are treated to a nail-biter! Torey Krug gets a 5 minue major in the 1st, and Jagr throws the kitchen sink at Gibson — but can’t put anything past him. Late in the 1st, Patrick Marleau (26) scores to put the Bandits up 1-0 in a period dominated by the home team.

Halfway through the 2nd, former Bandit Jamie Oleksiak (2) scores on his former team to tie it up, and we head into the 3rd knotted at one!

The Mullets get a defenseman special halfway into the 3rd, as Ellis (16) scores with the only assist coming from D partner Justin Schultz. It’s 2-1 home team!

But that doesn’t last long, as former Mullet Justin Braun (4) lights the lamp at 13:37 to tie it right back up.

The storyline of the week is familiar faces… and Brentwood is victimized by a bitter Alexander Radulov (15) at 17:09 as he Mullets pull off the improbable upset 3-2 against the best team in the league.

After the game, Radulov is seen eating a plate full of hot dogs in the locker room, with a big grin on his ugly mug.

Weekly Summary: With playoff hopes dangling by a thread, Jagr drops the first game on the schedule but pulls out gut-check wins in the final two to secure 4 of 6 points at home.

Do you believe in miracles? Check back later.

Brentwood Bandits One home game. Resting some players. Big Brother comes to town again with the Mullets. Can Brentwood “Cut” the Mullets? Get it? Cut? Mullet?

Yeah, that was bad.

Jagr Mullets @ Brentwood Bandits A good game. Nail-biter for sure!

Roussel (14) starts off scoring for Jagr at 3:26 of the first. 1-0 Jagr

Niederreiter (21) assisted by Kessel (56) to tie it 1-1

Krug rounds out the scoring int he first period with his 7th of the season as the Bandits take a 2-1 lead.

2nd period – no scoring. Lots of chances though, including a goal by Tavares that, after review, was determined it did not cross the line… NO GOAL!

3rd period

1:41 Granlund pots his 19th from Lindholm (21) and Schultz (30). Jagr ties it 2-2.

It looked like Radulov gave the Mullets the lead with a wrister from the left circle, but it was waved off as the net was off of it’s moorings!

**Let me say, I have yet to see a disallowed goal and I saw TWO in this game. Interesting…

We’re winding down with just over a minute left. Should be headed to Overti– nope. Schultz scores his 11th from Radulov (26) and Hall (31). 3-2 Mullets with 1:03 left.

Brentwood WANTS to pull Halak, but doesn’t get the chance as Jagr keeps the puck in their zone for the entire 1:03 seconds. Ugh.

Great game but Jagr pulls out the win on the road 3-2 against the league’s “best” team.

Heading down the stretch to the playoffs is not a good time to start to fall apart. No need to panic just yet. Let’s see how we do on our other two away games.

California Regulators
LA Great Danes @ California Regulators LA beats California 5-4.
Alamo Defenders @ California Regulators Alamo beats California.
Weekly Summary: We’re just now beginning to see a trend here.

Long Beach Ice Dogs Long Beach hosts 2 playoff teams this week, needing all the points they can get to try and make the playoffs.
Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ Long Beach Ice Dogs Long Beach scored less than 1 minute into the game and led 3-1 with 5 minutes to go in the period. Minnesota scored the next 3 goals and took a 4-3 lead midway through the 2nd period. Long Beach got a goal from Nash to tie the game going into the 3rd period. They then exploded for 4 goals in the last period and went on to an 8-4 win. 8 different players scored the goals and Talbot made 30 saves.

Stars:
1. Marner
2. Savard
3. Teravainen

Clearfield Bison @ Long Beach Ice Dogs After the goals scoring of the previous game, it took awhile for the Long Beach offense to get started. Brodie scored 2 goals to give Clearfield a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period. Skinner cut the lead to 1 before the end of the period giving the home fans some hope. In the 3rd, Nash & Wilson scored giving the Ice Dogs a 3-2 win. Talbot had to make 40 saves as the Bison peppered him all game.

Stars:
1. Brodie
2. Talbot
3. Skinner

Weekly Summary: Long Beach picked up 4 needed 4 points, including 2 against the team they are chasing.
Bucks County Racoons Racs hope to keep their flickering playoff hopes alive with a single home game against a playoff bound team….
Hampton Blizzard @ Bucks County Racoons In a very evenly played game, the Bucks County Raccoons needed a shootout to defeat the visiting Hampton Blizzard 2-1. The game was very even throughout, with shots on goal being 31-29, shot attempts at 56-57, scoring chances at 9 each, and 5 PP for Hampton vs. 4 for BC. McDavid had the decisive goal in the shootout for the BC win…….
Weekly Summary: Much needed win for the Racs, and a participation and thanks for coming point for Hampton…..

LA Great Danes 3 Home Games for the week for the Great Danes, including another battle with division rival Alamo.
Hampton Blizzard @ LA Great Danes Hampton comes in resting some key players, so LA counters by giving Toffoli some rest as well. Nick Bonino scores 1:22 into the game, and with Hampton’s undermanned offense, that goal is all the Danes need. Nick Elhers extends the lead to 2-0 in the 2nd, and Frederick Andersen closes the door the rest of the way as he earns his 9th shutout of the season with 24 saves.
Alamo Defenders @ LA Great Danes Against 2nd place Alamo, the Danes break down early, giving up an early goal by Defenseman Ekblad off an odd-man rush against the Danes 4th line, and Pearson and Read add 1st period goals to give Alamo a 3-0 lead after 1. The Danes then take 2 early penalties in the 2nd. While they kill off the penalties, they can’t get anything going and continue to be down 3-0 heading into the 3rd. The Danes again run into penalty trouble early in the 3rd and have to play 7 of the first 8 minutes of the 3rd on the PK. When Scheifele scores at 9:43 to make it 3-1, there’s a glimmer of hope for LA. But 2 quick goals by Pacioretty makes it 5-1 for Alamo, and that ends Andersen’s night. The Danes get a couple of garbage goals, with Pearson also scoring for Alamo against backup Mason on a breakaway, and Alamo finishes with a 6-3 route of LA. Pacioretty and Pearson each get 2 goals for Alamo, and the Danes were never in this one.
Long Beach Ice Dogs @ LA Great Danes After the stinker versus Alamo, the Great Danes get off to a quick start versus Long Beach on a Ryan Suter goal 41 seconds into the game, but the teams trade goals in period 1 to end at 2-2. Andersen again seemed off in goal, but he was given the benefit of the doubt to remain in the game and fight through his struggles. Jamie Benn gave the Danes their 3rd lead of the night 1:39 into the 2nd, but Steven Stamkos scored twice 3 minutes apart to give the Ice Dogs a 4-3 lead heading into the 3rd. A Scheifele PPG tied it for LA in the 3rd, but Parise scored off a bad rebound to give Long Beach another lead at 5-4. But 34 seconds after Parise’s goal, Jamie Benn scored to tie it at 5-5. Jeff Skinner beat Andersen at 18:07 to make it 6-5 Long Beach, and Benn and LA thought they had it tied at the end, but Benn’s point-blank shot at the buzzer just went wide, and the Danes came up short 6-5.

Stamkos with a big 4-point night with 2G-2A, and Skinner and Benn both had 2G-1A.

Weekly Summary: This was a tough week at home for the Great Danes, losing 2 of 3. Andersen started the week with a relatively easy shutout win versus Hampton, and he then had perhaps his two worst outings of the season in the 6-3 and 6-5 losses. With another loss to Alamo, the Danes are in danger of dropping out of first place, a spot they have held for most of the season.

Corktown Suds
Brentwood Bandits @ Corktown Suds The leagues best team rolls on Brentwood 3-1
Weekly Summary: Corktown goes 0-1 at home

Clearfield Bison Coming off an 0-2-1 week at home, the reeling Bison desperately need some points. Here comes division rival New Jersey..with the rare (unheard-of?) back-to-back-to-back set..two in Clearfield, one at the Grizzly Den.
New Jersey Grizzlies @ Clearfield Bison Shaky start (again) for Clearfield, as Weber scores late in the first.

In the second, NJ begins a parade to the sin bin that would last the rest of the game…and Clearfield fights back to take a 2-1 lead behind goals from Kane and Chimera.

Jersey gets the tying marker at 5:36 of the 3rd from Werenski, but after five failed PP chances…Clearfield scores on a delayed penalty,Chimera potting his second of the game!

NJ didn’t push all that hard, seemed like the wind was out of their sails, and Clearfield skated away with a 3-2 win.

Holtby kept NJ in this one – 40 saves on 43 shots, the chances were 15-7 Clearfield, and the Bison had all the PPs in the game.

STARS:#1 Chimera 2G #2 (override) Holtby 40sv #3 Kane G

New Jersey Grizzlies @ Clearfield Bison With NJ going to Schneider for game 2, I was concerned…You know how sometimes..the backup goalie comes in and surprisingly shuts the door? Well, this time it didn’t work that way.

Anderson was sparkling for Clearfield, the Bison got two PP markers in the first and cruised to an easy 6-1 win.

Not much to say..Clearfield dominated most of the stats (shots 42-36, chances 19-8, PP 2-3 vs 0-3 for the Grizz).

Weekly Summary: Clearfield gets 4 much-needed points at home

Toledo Walleye Toledo (36-23-5) has our only 4 game homestand of the season at a key point in the season, trying to hang on to a playoff spot. The Walleye will be without Thomas Vanek, 2nd leading scorer for most of the week. Visiting Toledo will be Long Beach (29-30-5), and division rivals Wausau (28-29-7) and then 2 games with Bucks County (30-29-4)
Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Toledo Walleye Toledo 2, Long Beach 1 – A very close game both on the stat sheet and the scoreboard. Also a very clean game with only 3 penalties and 1 powerplay. Long Beach got on the board early with a goal by Schmidt, but it was answered quickly by Foligno, leading us to suspect a high scoring game was afoot. But Dubnyk and Talbot then took the spotlight and shut down the scoring for the next 40 minutes. With less than 10 minutes left in this 1-1 tight game and the fans getting a bit edgy, Van Riemsdyk lights the lamp, on a nice assist by Backstrom and Barrie to break the tie 2-1
1st star Dubnyk 31 saves
2nd star – Foligno 1g
3rd star – VanRiemsdyk
author would have given 2nd star to Talbot for a great game in goal for the visitors.
Wausau Lumberjacks @ Toledo Walleye Wausau 3, Toledo 2 OT – Wausau wins a great one in overtime. On the stat sheet they were behind in, and on the ice way behind, as they had to 6 PK’s to defend. Toledo took the early lead 2-0 on goals by Rieder and Backstrom (PP). Wausau evens it up in the 2nd, between penalty kills on goals by Faksa and Hoffman. The 3rd period is tense, with each team threatening the tie, but falling short, sending the game to OT. Hoffman makes it a short OT, scoring less than a minute in.
1st star Hoffman 2g
2nd star – Smith 44 saves
3rd star – Faksa 1g
Bucks County Racoons @ Toledo Walleye Toledo 5, Bucks County 3 – Toledo dominates in scoring chances 14-7 and it shows on the scoreboard. They double up the visitors in each of the first 2 periods 2-1, taking a 4-2 lead into the 3rd. The Racoons cut the lead to 1 in the 3rd on a goal by Ritchie, and later in the game the visitors pull the goalie in a frantic last minute but the home team kills the rally with an empty netter by MacDonald to put out the fire and perserve the win 5-3
1st star – Okposo 1g2a
2nd star – Green 1g
3rd star – Foligno 1g
Bucks County Racoons @ Toledo Walleye Toledo 6, Bucks County 2 – Bucks County apparently tired from the Brew festival in Toledo this weekend come in a little hung over and can’t quite get it going for the last game of their road trip. The visitors get goals from Moore and McDavid. The home team with goals from Foligno (2),Sutter (2), Letestu and Krejci.
1st star – Foligno 2g
2nd star – Sutter 2g
3rd star – Krejci 1g1a
Weekly Summary: In their only 4 game homestand the (hopefully) playoff bound Walleye do not disappoint the home fans, getting 7 points, and hang on to first in the Central Division. The defense continues to lead the effort, holding opponents to 9 goals in the 4 game set. Two games the Walleye never had a penalty kill, and the other 2 games the team was a 6 for 6 in penalty kills.
On the offensive side Foligno had a great week with 4 goals.

Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland has 3 home divisional games this block…probably not enough to get out of the cellar…but Fleury is back in net to hopefully finish out the year strong.
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Columbus 7, Lakeland 6 OT.

Fleury should have been sent on a conditioning stint. Not as many shots as you might think, just lots got past the netminders in this game. Bishop, in relief, stops the bleeding and earns the win in OT.

Brentwood Bandits @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland 3, Brentwood 1.

Fleury suddenly finds his way and stops 39 of 40 to earn a hard-fought win. Oshie hits the 30 goal mark on the season in 58 games. Very happy with his performance this season.

Columbus Brew Jackets @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland 3, Columbus 2 OT.

Lakeland exacts a little payback for the earlier Ot loss this break.

Weekly Summary: Well, one of the better blocks with a possible 5 of 6 points taken. Wish we could have had Fleury for a few more games this season…Jones is a very D man dependent goalie…and i just don’t have any strong D men, 😛

Gilbert Sharks Gilbert plays 3 Home Games and 1 Road game at the commissioner’s request
Gilbert Sharks @ Chicago Cosa Nostra Roman Josi scores the game winner with 1:26 left in the game. Gilbert 2, Chicago 1
Alamo Defenders @ Gilbert Sharks Gilbert had a 2-1 lead after the 1st period but Alamo scores 3 in the 2nd. There is no scoring in the 3rd Period and Alamo wins 4-2. Gilbert is called for 8 penalties in the game.
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers @ Gilbert Sharks Jake Muzzin scores the game winner in the 3rd Period to give Thunder Bay a 4-3 win.
California Regulators @ Gilbert Sharks Louis Domingue makes 37 Saves and shuts out Gilbert 5-0.
Weekly Summary: Gilbert wins 1 of 4 as they attempt to be the worst team in the league

Columbus Brew Jackets Brew Jackets have one home game this week as they work to stay in the hunt for the division and it’s against their biggest rival – Bathgate, always a tough game.
Bathgate Rangers @ Columbus Brew Jackets What have normally been high scoring affairs, this Rangers-Blue Jackets game look like a post-season tilt. Jackets get the first light midway through the 1st when Strome gets his 11th assisted by Hayes (39). Things continue to be tight as Budaj and stop everything in the 2nd. Columbus seeks to ice the game when Strome (12) scores his 2nd of the game 5 minutes into the 3rd. But the Rangers don’t give up and attack and attack and Eric Staal (15) splits the pipes at 9:17 to cut the Brew Jacket lead to 2-1. But Brett Burns nets his 27th 2 minutes later to get the Columbus cushion back to 2 goals. But the Rangers keep attacking, and pull the goalie for the final minute and a half and tally 17 shots on Budaj in the 3rd, but he gives up no more and the Brew Jackets win 3-1.
