LA Great Danes
California Regulators @ LA Great Danes Danes go up 3-0, Cal ties it, and LA gets an empty net goal to win 6-3.
Clearfield Bison @ LA Great Danes This game deserves a good recap, but here’s the short version. Clearfield wins a close on 3-2. Patrick Kane scores 2 goals for Clearfield. The Danes have a strong 3rd period, but Luongo shuts down LA late with some key saves in the last minute. This was a fun game to play between 2 division leaders.
Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ LA Great Danes The Great Danes finish off the week with a 4-0 win, with Andersen getting his 8th shutout of the season.
Weekly Summary: 2 of 3 wins at home. The Danes have not had a losing record in any weekly segment since week 2 of the season.

Brentwood Bandits Brentwood has an important week. First is a game against fellow powerhouse Clearfield to see who is the best team in the league! Also – Two division games, one against 2nd place Columbus, one against the brotherly rivalry with underachieving Jagr.
Clearfield Bison @ Brentwood Bandits Clearfield comes into Brentwood with a swagger. It’s the top two teams in the league facing off to see who is #1!

Clearfield wastes no time as Kane (14) beats Halak from the left faceoff circle to make it 1-0 Bisons. Will starting Halak over Gibson (numbers game) be a questionable mistake?

1st period winding down as Backes (14) tips a shot from Tavares past Anderson. Tied 1-1.

2nd period Crosby (33) beats Anderson with a wrister from the left circle. 2-1 Bandits lead.

Nearly 2 minutes later Chimera (6) rips a slapper past Halak to tie it again 2-2.

A minute later Drouin (17) makes it 3-2 Clearfield.

A minute and a half later Niederreiter (19) scores to knot it at 3.

3rd period… Bandits on a PP. Niederreiter with the tap in from a great pass from Crosby (31) and also Kessel (47). Bandits lead 4-3.

Vermette scores on a short handed breakaway to put the Bandits ahead 5-3.

Clearfield pulls Anderson and Rakell (31) rips one by Halak to cut the lead to 5-4 but it’s not enough as the Bandits hang on by the edge of their skates to win 5-4.

GREAT game. Tons of fun to play. Look forward to the playoffs.

Jagr Mullets @ Brentwood Bandits The Mullets come to town. Loser buys dinner and drinks.

1st period – The Pens Connection Line scores as Jake (n’bake) Guentzel (18) lights the lamp from Crosby (33) and Kessel (48) to make it 1-0 Bandits.

1st period winding down as Ellis scores his 13th of the season from Staal (18) and Ovechkin (34). Tied 1-1.

2nd period starts off with a Bandit Power Play which Tavares cashes in his 21st of the season from El Nino (32) and Old-Man Marleau (14). 2-1 Bandits lead.

Halfway through the 2nd Kadri (30) ties it up 2-2 with a wicked wrista from Radulov (23) and Hall (29).

Go to the 3rd… a great back and forth even period. Great saves on both ends by Vasilevskiy and Gibson. Then at 15:55 Jake’n’Bake scores his second of the night and 19th of the year (From Crosby 34). Bandits lead 3-2.

Mullets pull Vasilevskiy to try to tie it up but Gibson stands tall and an unfortunate bounce off the boards sends defenseman Forbort through the neutral zone untouched as he sends an easy wrister into the empty net for his 1st of the season! Bandits go on to win 4-2.

Columbus Brew Jackets @ Brentwood Bandits 2nd place Columbus comes to Brentwood to try to knock the Bandits down a peg or two.

This was a wild game.

1st period – Bandits try to get aggressive early on a 3 on 1 break, but fail to score, which sends Vesey on a breakaway all alone baring down on Halak. He dekes and shoots… SCORES! Columbus leads 1-0.

Halfway through the first Dion says “Phaneuf is Phaneuf” as he rips a slapper past Budaj for his 7th on the campaign to tie the game 1-1

Bandits get sloppy and can’t stay out of the penalty box. A Power Play for Columbus that carries over to the 2nd period and Backes goes off for Tripping. A 5 on 3 for the Brew Jackets and they cash in with Couture (20) scoring to take a 2-1 lead.

Still on the PP Burns (19) rips one from the point to make it a 3-1 Columbus lead.

Vermette goes off for checking from behind. Columbus on the PP yet AGAIN… and they cash in as Burns (20) rips yet another from the point to put Columbus ahead 4-1.

The Bandits are shaken… can they gather themselves and mount a comeback?

David Backes re-directs a shot by Miller (11) for his 15th of the season to cut the lead to 4-2 Columbus.

At the 14:04 mark Nash steals the puck in the neutral zone, throws it to Glendenning, who feeds it across ice to Vatrano who buries it 5 hole for his 5th of the season. Bandits pull withing one as Columbus still leads 4-3.

At the 18:51 mark of the 2nd, Forbort (2) wrists one through traffic that sneaks in past Budaj to tie the game at 4! Crosby gets his 35th assist of the season and Kessel gets his 50th.

We go to the third period tied 4-4. Bandits need to stay out of the box as Columbus is 3-4 on the PP.

Brodziak goes of for hooking at 2:35 of the third. Bandits with the man advantage… Kessel fires, Crosby tips. GOAL!! Crosby with his league leading 34th of the season. Kessel got his 51st assist, but Krug also gets his league leading (?) 53rd assist. Bandits lead 5-4.

11:41 of the 3rd Darren Helm, who got the “spot start” scores his first of the season to make it 6-4 Bandits.

Of course Columbus throws everything they can at Halak for the last 9:19 of the third, but even pulling Budaj doesn’t work as the Bandits hold on to win 6-4.

Wild game! Lesson learned… stay out of the box against Columbus! 🙂

Weekly Summary: 3 home games, 6 points. A great week at home for Brentwood as we beat Clearfield to claim the top spot in the league. Add on beating my brother (Jagr) and fellow division rival Columbus, and you have a great week.

When asked about the home stand, Coach Tom Atkins said “It’s February. It’s stretch time. We’re playing at a high level right now and I expect this same level of play for the duration.”

Reporters fall silent as that’s the most he has said all year.

Jagr Mullets Just one home game for the Mullets, but it’s a big one – against one of the two teams we’re chasing for a playoff spot.
Hampton Blizzard @ Jagr Mullets If you like goals, you’d love this game. Unfortunately, Jagr got their mullets sheared by the Blizzard.

Ryan Ellis scores 23 seconds into the game for the Mullets, but then the wintry mix just kept on coming.

The Mullets did their part to help pad the Blizzard stats.

Malkin with a hat trick.

Too depressed to write up any further. 7-2 Hampton.

Weekly Summary: Jagr licks their wounds and hopes for better luck in their 3 road games.

Alamo Defenders California, Bathgate, and Jagr come to San Antonio. The Defenders have been hot and are trying to catch LA. I loaded all visiting files before playing.
California Regulators @ Alamo Defenders Marchand and Karlsson get the scoring going for Alamo as they each net a goal in the 1st period.

The Regulators cash in with a power play in the second period as Johnny Gaudreau connects on his 11th goal. Later, in the second, Ekblad and Plekanec score to put the game out of reach.

Alamo 5 California 2

Alamo 45 shots California 13

1st star – Marchand 2 goals
2nd star – Karlsson 1 goal and 1 assist
3rd star – Ekblad 1 goal

Bathgate Rangers @ Alamo Defenders Very interesting game. Alamo overlooks the Rangers – I guess.

Shots on goal
Alamo 54 Bathgate 19

Bathgate’s key to victory was not letting Alamo get inside on shot attempts. Also, the Rangers intimidation factor was high. Alamo at one point was -5. This had an impact.

The Rangers score the first two, then Alamo scores the next two goals. Then, Bathgate ntets 2 in the 3rd. Alamo gets one from Plekanec, but they fall one short.

Bathgate 4 Alamo 3

1st-Karlsson 1 goal and 3 assists – Rangers
2nd – Plekanec 2 goals
3rd – Rinne 51 saves

Jagr Mullets @ Alamo Defenders Alamo continues their shots on goal rampage by outshooting Jagr 48-28. Unlike game 2, the Defenders found the goal. Eaves, Perreault, and Pacioretty all score. Eaves has his 26th goal and Pacioretty scores his 23rd. Lehner earns a shutout.

Alamo 3 Jagr 0

1st star – Lehner 28 saves
2nd star – Eaves 1 goal
3rd star – Pacioretty 1 goal

Weekly Summary: Alamo with a shooting gallery in all 3 games. They beat California and Jagr. They struggle against Bathgate’s toughness.

Corktown Suds
Alamo Defenders @ Corktown Suds Corktown spoils the defenders visit to Michigan.

Corktown 4-1

Hampton Blizzard @ Corktown Suds Every game counts for the Blizzard as they try and hang on to that playoff spot. Corktown takes the 2 points between the division rivals in a high scoring battle. Hampton’s Lee gets a hat trick late in the game (30).

Corktown 5-4

New Jersey Grizzlies @ Corktown Suds The Suds jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first and didn’t look back.
Weekly Summary: Corktown wins all three games at home and gets an impressive 6 points. They still have an outside shot at the playoffs, but you’re saying there’s a chance.

Toledo Walleye Toledo (31-21-4) has two big home games this week. First against division rival Bucks County (27-25-4). Bucks County has the season matchup advantage so far winning 2 of 3. The other game against Pacific division leader LA (36-15-5). LA holds a 2-0 advantage in head to head play this season. Gonna be a tough pair of games.
Bucks County Racoons @ Toledo Walleye Toledo 5, Bucks County 2. Bucks County draws first blood, but then its all Walleyes. A matching goal by Brouwer in the first. Then in the 2nd Versteeg and VanReimsdyk put the home team up by two. After that Toledo takes advantage of a couple PP opportunities to ice the game.
1st star – Green 1g 1a
2nd star – Backstrom 1g 1a
3rd star – Versteeg 1g 1a
LA Great Danes @ Toledo Walleye Toledo 3, LA 2 – LA dominiates the first 2 periods with 24-12 SOG advantage, and converts 2 PP opportunities (Kesler, Ehlers) to take a 2-0 lead into the 3rd. Toledo finally converts a PP in the 3rd (Green) and this seems to fire up the team who then goes much more aggressive in play and gets 2 more goals (Brouwer and Versteeg) the last one with only 2 minutes left. LA pulls the goalie and shells Dubnyk the last 2 minutes, but he builds a wall and perserves the win for Toledo.
1st star – Ehlers 1g 1a
2nd star – Green 1g
3rd star – Versteeg 1g
Weekly Summary: Two very big wins by Toledo at home this week, especially the come from behind against LA. Two nice performances by the goalies with Dell and Dubnyk each holding the opposition to 2 goals each, which allowed the skaters to do their thing.
For the skaters, a good week by Green and Versteeg with 2g,1a each.

California Regulators
Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ California Regulators Minneapolis beats California 4-3.
Weekly Summary: California drops its only home game this week.

Long Beach Ice Dogs
Gilbert Sharks @ Long Beach Ice Dogs Gilbert jumped out to a 2-0 lead after :33 of the first period. Over the next 13 minutes, Long Beach scored 5 goals and this looked like it would be a high scoring game. But that was the end of the scoring as Talbot made 40 saves in the Ice Dogs 5-2 win.

Stars:
1. Martinez
2. Carter
3. Talbot

California Regulators @ Long Beach Ice Dogs After a scoreless 1st period, Skinner tallied the first goal for the home team. California scored 2 goals in the next minute to take a 2-1 lead. A minute into the 3rd, Skinner tied the game on his 28th goal of the year. 7 minutes later Cole scored the game winning goal as Long Beach won 3-2.

Stars:
1. Skinner
2. Cole
3. Carter

Weekly Summary: Long Beach won both their home games to keep their faint playoff hopes alive.

Bathgate Rangers 2 home games AND a Road game to report. Bathgate hosts a big team (Columbus) and a team in about the same shape (Wausau) and squeezes a road game at Chicago in between.
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Bathgate Rangers Another version of the rivalry game and as much as these teams lack defense, this one was just that – a defensive struggle – or outstanding net minding. Johnson for the Brewers gets #1 star as he makes 39 saves – in regulation and a full 5 minute OT. Rinne got star #2 as he stopped 26 shots in regulation and a full 5 minute OT. That’s right, it was 0-0 at the end of 65 minutes. So it’s on to the shoot-out.
Kucherov starts it by whipping one past Rinne – there is a net!
Anderson then steps up and he slides one under Johnson.
Then Rinne stones Couture, Ferland is stuffed, Rinne sprawls and shuts down Miller. Staal then winds up, deeks, and shoots one past Johnson and the Rangers pull out the 1-0 SO win.
Gryba gets 3rd star.
Bathgate Rangers @ Chicago Cosa Nostra On to Chicago as two of the bottom dwellers meet and this one produced 9 goals. As is there want lately, the Rangers are again in a 1 goal game, but this time on the short end. But what a game.
Rangers score twice in the 1st 2 minutes. Ferland takes a pass from Staal just before the 1 minutes mark and scores to the 1-0 lead. Then less than a minute later Klingberg teams up with Zajac and Anderson and it’s 2-0 before the Cosa Nostra has even broken a sweat. But then they heat up and Horvat gets one at the 4 minute mark, Nylander scores halfway through the period to tie it up and Galchenyuk put Chicago in the lead with 24 seconds remaining in the 1st. Home ice was smoking, as were the fans.
But 2nd period has to be played and Killorn erases the Chicago lead early as he lights up the net. But Ek Erickson breaks the tie late in the 2nd and the Cosa Nostra take a 4-3 lead into the 3rd.
Rangers haven’t gone home yet, Karlsson scores 7 minutes in and the game is again knotted, now 4-4. Then the strong Ranger defense from the previous game quit to soon. Nugent-Hopkins digs, scrapes, and pounces to score the game-winner at 19:19. Then the Cosa Nostra survive the Ranger onslaught in the last minute and Chicago gets the 5-4 win. 5 PP between the teams – Ranges had 4 – and not a single PP goal in the 9 scored.
STARS – all CHI
1. Nylander, 1 goal, 2 assists
2. Galchenyuk, 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Horvat, 1 goal
Wausau Lumberjacks @ Bathgate Rangers Rangers back home to host Wausau in what they hope will bring them to a .500 W/L record. Wausau had other plans. Hoffman (17) gets the scoring started early in the 1st. Temporary blip follows when Provorov (2) ties it later in the 1st. Then Hoffman (18) gets his 2nd, in the 2nd. And Palat (18) and Kopitar (5) put it away early in the 3rd scoring both goals inside the 1st 4 minutes. Smith was more than capable in the net stopping everything after that 1st period goal and Wausau wins 4-1. And Smith had a lot to stop, 40 shots on goal by the Rangers.
STARS (all Lumberjacks)
1. Hoffman 2 goals
2. Smith, 39 saves
3. Palat, 1 goal, 1 assist
Weekly Summary: Rangers pick up 2 points in 2 home game and the road trip to Chicago. Mediocre, but the defense is getting better.

Clearfield Bison Clearfield faces their toughest 4-gamer of the season…road games against the top 2 teams in the league, as well as a road tilt with Hampton. Our one home game is also hosting the Blizzard. A 2-2 week would be just dandy. Can the Bison defend their home turf?
Hampton Blizzard @ Clearfield Bison Disastrous start for Clearfield. OEL and Backlund struck for Hampton in the first – and when Malkin slammed home a PP goal early in the second, it looked like lights-out for Clearfield.

But..the Bison fought back. two quick tallies closed them to within a goal, then the Blizzard took consecutive penalties to give Clearfield a fairly long 2-man advantage. As has been the case much of the season, however, the Bison PP was inept and wasted the entire opportunity.

When Dvorak (of all people) scored a few minutes after that, the course was set. Kane scored a PP marker for Clearfield in the third and the Bison pushed hard, but Price was up to the challenge and Hampton took the game, 4-3.

Aside from Clearfield’s typcial faceoff domination (58-42) the stats were very even. Shots27-23 CLE, changes 14-13 HAM.

STARS: #1 Dvorak 1g 1A #2 Backling 1G #3 OEL 1G

Weekly Summary: Loss at home, loss at Brentwood, win at LA…we knew it would be a challenging week, just waiting to see how the other end of the Hampton home-and-home turned out.

Columbus Brew Jackets 1 home game this week – against the flying Tigers of Lakeland who haven’t been flying to high lately.
Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Columbus Brew Jackets Both teams score 3 times in the 2nd. Columbus gets a goal from Foligno (12), the Lakeland rattles of 2 when Grabner (16) and Henriqure (11) put shots in the net. Burn then scores for Columbus (21) followed by Kucherov (22). But Grabner (17) gets his 2nd of the period. Jackets and Flying Tigers go 3-3 in the 2nd, but a 1st periods goal from Tyler Johnson (16) and the 3rd period tall by Letang (2) give the Brew Jackets the 5-3 victory. Lakeland had the edge in SOG 36-26 and FOW 61.3% to 38.7%, but in the nets went to Columbus.
STARS

Bucks County Racoons Two home games against division rivals behind the Racs in the standings. Not necessarily must wins, but we would tough not to get 4 points out of the week at home.

Minneapolis Deep Freeze Minneapolis faces off against the division leading Toledo Walleye in their only home game of the week.
Toledo Walleye @ Minneapolis Deep Freeze Toledo Walleye (1) @ Minneapolis Deep Freeze (5)

Minneapolis gets on the board first 5 minutes into the game when Marchessault (21) makes a great move to get around Ekholm and puts one just past the glove of a sprawling Dubnyk. Both teams get a few shots at each end but nothing too exiting and we go to the first intermission with Minneapolis leading 1-0 and holding a 10-6 advantage in shots.

The Deep Freeze extend their lead when Hossa (26) put a move on Green and beat Dubnyk on the glove side to make it 2-0. The next 15 minutes are fairly uneventful again. Toledo outshoots Minneapolis 10-6 in the period to tie the shots at 16 per side but is still unable to break through Bobrovsky.

About halfway through the third period, Chara (11) makes it 3-0 for the Deep Freeze with a powerplay goal on a one-timer from the point. Toledo doesn’t wait long to respond, as Rieder (10) redirects Martin’s shot past Bobrovsky to bring the Walleye back within 2. Under 4 minutes left to play and Marchessault (22) beats Dubnyk up high on a one-timer from Spezza to put Minneapolis back up 3. Marchessault (23) would add one more for the hat trick with under 5 seconds to go on a nice feed from Aho, this time beating Dubnyk low on the stick side. Minneapolis beats Toledo 5-1 in a game that was much closer than the final score shows.

Thunder Bay Nor’Westers Three home games this week then 4 on the road next week. we need to play well or our season will be over.
New Jersey Grizzlies @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers New Jersey (2) Thunder Bay (1) in Overtime
A heart breaking loss. Nor’Westers new rookie Kyle Connor scores his 1st ever MWHL goal in the 1st period and that holds up until New Jersey pulls their goal with a little over a minute to go in the game. The Daniel Sedin scores with just 11 seconds left in the game to send us into Overtime.
Where Daniel Sedin rips Nor’Wester fans hearts out to win the game. Brutal Loss.
The major failure was Thunder Bay going 0-for-6 on the Power Play.
Corktown Suds @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers Thunder Bay jumps to an early lead 2-0 on goals by Barkov(13) and Athanasiou(17), but Corktown’s Monahan narrows the gap to 2-1 aas the 1st period ends.

In the 2nd period the games flows back and forth. Austin Mathews ties the game at 2-2, then Barkov scores his 2nd of the game (14) and Mathews answers with his 2nd of the game (22) and we are tied at 3-3. Calle Jarnkrok scores for the Nor’Westers but Wilson answers for the Suds and as the period ends we are knotted at 4-4.
Wayne Simmons scores the game winner to Corktown and Thunder Bay went 0-for-6 again on the power play and losses their 2nd 1 goal game. These are two games we should have won.

Columbus Brew Jackets @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers The 1st period is scoreless. In the 2nd Columbus scores the first 2 goals by Strome (9) and Schlemko (1) but Thunder Bay responds with two to tie the game, Saad (16) and O’Reilly (15), as the 2nd period ends.

Kucherov (23) pushed Columbus to a 1 goal lead 3-2. The Brent Burns push the lead to 4-2 as fans stream into the parking lots. Adam Larsson (2) scores but it is too little and too late.

Weekly Summary: Three 1 goal losses at HOME. The power play had 18 chances and scored just twice a miserable 11%. Coach Jiri Fischer’s tenure in Thunder Bay is in serious question after the team’s 2nd half collapse. Goalie play has been inconsistent all season and the overall defensive play has been poor especially late in games.

Gilbert Sharks Gilbert has two Home Games both against Long Beach
Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Gilbert Sharks The 1st Period ends 3-3 but it is all Gilbert from there as they score 2 in the 2nd period and add an empty netter to win 6-3.
Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Gilbert Sharks Long Beach jumps out to a 3-1 lead but Gilbert storms back with 2 goals within 30 seconds late in the 2nd Period. Atkinson and Panarin add goals in the 3rd Period to give Gilbert a 5-3 victory
Weekly Summary: Gilbert gets two home victories. Now if they could just figure it out on the road.

New Jersey Grizzlies Keeping the grind up.
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers @ New Jersey Grizzlies Thunder Bay-2 / NJ-5
Gilbert Sharks @ New Jersey Grizzlies Gilbert-1 / NJ-3
Weekly Summary: 2 games and 2 wins this week.

Hampton Blizzard With Hampton’s owner on vacation, Clearfield played the rematch at the request of the commish….

Both teams are desperate…Clearfield, coming off losses to Hampton and Brentwood, wanted to regain some steam for the stretch run. Hampton sees this 4-point game as a last-gasp at the division – a win leaves them only 8 points out, while a loss puts them 12 out with 22 games to go.

Clearfield Bison @ Hampton Blizzard First period – nothing to say. Both teams took a bunch of perimeter shots, none of them came close to beating Price or Anderson, and we went to the second 0-0.

Hampton found their legs in the second and at 4:33, Point slammed one home. The Blizzard pushed and pushed, but Anderson was huge in the period…the shots were fairly even, but the scoring chances were 7-1 in favor of the Blizzard for the period. Thanks to Anderson, the Bison got to the locker room only down 1-0.

After an inspired speech by Captain Bergeron, Clearfield came out on fire in the third.Rakell scored on the first shift of the period, and the visitors controlled play for about 5 minutes. Then came the key sequence -Edler took a penalty for the Bison, and it looked like Hampton had their chance to steal back the momentum. But at the end of a solid kill, Bergeron picked off a pass and scored on a shorthanded breakaway! Two minutes later, Justin Williams deflected one on on the PP for Clearfield…and that was all she wrote. Rakell added a second goal for good measure late.

Stats mostly favored the home side -Hampton outshot Clearfield 31-25, outchanced the Bison 13-8, and even won the faceoff battle. Clearfield went 1-3 on the PP while Hampton went 0-3 – combined with the shortie, that was the difference.

STARS:
#1 Bergeron 1G 2A
#2 Anderson 30 sv
#3 Rakell 2G

Weekly Summary: Both Clearfield and Hampton end the set 2-2. Clearfield is satisfied with that, while Hampton sees an opportunity missed. These fierce rivals have only one game left on the season (at least until the postseason) – Clearfield leads the season series 4-3.

Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland had 3 home games this block; VS Toledo, Jagr, and Brentwood.
Toledo Walleye @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland 4, Toledo 3; OT
Oshie nets the GWG in less than 30 seconds into OT.
Jagr Mullets @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Jagr 5, Lakeland 3.
Lakeland is never really in the game and Jones is again; his five hole like self.
Brentwood Bandits @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland 2, Brentwood 1.
Lakeland scores twice early in the game and then holds on for dear life the rest of the way…
Weekly Summary: 4 points is better than no points, but we are still holding up the cellar in the Metro.
