Bathgate Rangers
Weekly Preview:
Bathgate gets it’s first home game of the year – and it’s only one in the last two series, so they will try to delight the crowd. They face Brentwood in a match that will be a battle for basement supremacy – or trying to avoid it (Brentwood) or work their way out of it (Bathgate). Bathgate has 2 of the top three scores in the league (Kane and Benn) but they also have the worst defense. Brentwood has Sid the Kid (not so much a Kid anymore, but he’s still Crosby)
Game #1: Wow – Rangers come home and light up the boards early. 18 seconds into the game and Ekman-Larsson is called for interference. Karlsson makes the Bandits pay when he redirects Kane’s shot into the net (Benn also an assist) for a quick 1-0 lead (35 seconds into the game).Ekman-Larsson begins his atonement however when he sets up Parenteau at the 10:30 mark (Crosby also assists on the goal). Then Marleau slips one past Rinne to close out the opening period scoring with Brentwood on top 2-1.

A minute into period 2 Phaneuf is called for slashing. This negates the Bandits power play and sets up the Rangers for a 43 second power play. They respond as Kane connects from Nesterov and Benn to tie the score. Kane then adds a 2nd goal post the midway point as he redirects a Benn shot past the diving Fleury. BUT Ekman-Larsson ties it back up at 3-3 26 seconds later on the 1st of his 2 goals in the game – both of which are set up by the duo of Niederreiter and Marleau.

The 2nd Ekman-Larsson goal comes 34 seconds into the 3rd period – an even strength goal, but one that is scored on a delayed penalty. Bandits now up 4-3 but the Rangers keep pressing and Fayne is able to squirt one past Fluery to tie the game midway through the period.

BUT – remember that Crosby guy – well he comes through with a minute and a half left to put the game winner past Rinne who’s all sprawled out wondering what’s been going on this year.

Brentwood outshots the Rangers 38-25 but had fewer scoring chances, but they were 50% on those chances.
STARS:
1 – Ekman-Larsson 2 Goals, 3 Pts
2 – Kane 2 Goals, 3 Pts
3 – Marleau 1 Goal, 3 Pts (he also wins 16 faceoffs)

Niederreiter and Benn each had 3 assists in the game.

Weekly Summary:
Well it was a thriller – but in the end the Bandits have more offense across the board and better defense and they end up winning the game.
Brentwood 5 Bathgate 4

Minneapolis Deep Freeze
Weekly Preview:
The Deep Freeze are coming off a tough week having gone 2-2 to start the new year, and hope to regain some of the momentum they had prior to the holiday break with 3 home games this week including two against division foes.
Game #1: Wausau Lumberjacks (2) @ Minneapolis Deep Freeze (3)

These two teams always play each other tough with both previous games being decided by 1 goal (and one of them in a shootout), and tonight would be no different. Lundqvist gets a break tonight with Neuvirth starting in goal for the Deep Freeze.

The game gets off to a slow start with lots of action but very little offense as the teams combined for only 6 shots on goal in the first 10 minutes (5 for Minneapolis), including a Wausau powerplay that generated no shots. Wausau finally made it count when they did get control in the offensive zone with a flurry of shots that Neuvirth couldn’t control,
and eventually Moulson (2) banged one home on the 3rd rebound. With under 2 minutes left in the first period, Sharp gets loose on a breakaway for Minneapolis, but Howard flashes the leather and shuts him down. The period ends with Wausau leading 1-0 despite being outshot 10-6 and trailing in chances 7-1.

The second period featured two powerplays for Wausau but no goals for either team as Wausau outshot Minneapolis 10-5.

The third period opens with a hooking penalty on Sharp which angers Deep Freeze coach Larry Murphy. He knows that his team can’t win this game playing shorthanded. Fortunately his team was able to respond by killing off the penalty, and Wausau took one of their own shortly thereafter. With Brown in the box for elbowing and the puck deep in the Lumberjacks zone, Doan fed it to the point for Seidenberg, who ripped a shot that Brassard (15) was able to redirect past Howard to tie the game at 1. Later in the third with Minneapolis still controlling play in the Wausau zone, Howard gave up a juicy rebound and Doan was able to set up Huberdeau (4) to give Minneapolis the 2-1 lead with 7:07 remaining. Minneapolis apparently doesn’t like having the lead though, as Seidenberg takes a hooking penalty right off the ensueing faceoff, but Neuvirth stood tall and stopped all 5 Wausau shots on the powerplay.

With under 4 minutes to play, Wausau catches a break when Howard fed the puck up ice to Kopitar who set up Perry (19) for a blast from the point that beat Neuvirth to tie the game at 2. The lead would not last long though, as Seidenberg (3) redeemed himself for the earlier penalty with a blast of his own to give Minneapolis the 3-2 lead with under 1 minute left. Wausau pulled Howard from the goal for the following faceoff but couldn’t capitalize on the extra attacker, and Minneapolis holds on to win 3-2.

Game #2: Corktown Suds (0) @ Minneapolis Deep Freeze (4)

Minneapolis opened the scoring early in this one when Datsyuk (6) buried one from the high slot just over 3 minutes in. The rest of the period would feature a bunch of chances at both ends and a powerplay for each team, but neither team would be able to score again and the period ends with Minneapolis leading 1-0.

Getzlaf (7) would extend the lead to 2 early in the second with a tough shot from about the same shot as Datsyuk’s goal in the first period. After killing off a hooking penalty on Brassard, Minneapolis would manage to extend the lead once again. This time, Datsyuk (7) redirected Schmidt’s shot from the point to make it 3-0 for the Deep Freeze. 5
minutes later, a 3-on-2 chance for the Deep Freeze resulted in a penalty shot for Pesce, but Pesce rang it off the post. Minneapolis would pad the lead again with under 5 minutes left to play in the second period with another odd-man rush when Getslaf fed Sharp (10). Minneapolis leads 4-0 at the end of the second.

The third period would be mostly uneventful, and Minneapolis holds on win 4-0 with all 4 goals coming from the top 2 lines. Lundqvist made 34 saves in the shutout.

Game #3: Second City Chiefs (4) @ Minneapolis Deep Freeze (5)

Henrik Lundqvist starts tonight for Minneapolis on a scheduled day off as a reward for his excellent play in the shutout against Corktown.

Minneapolis strikes early for the second straight game as Schenn picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone for a breakaway against Tuuka Rask and beat the goalie high for his 9th of the year. It’s 1-0 Minneapolis barely 1 minute into the game. Less than 30 seconds later, Huberdeau set up Brassard (16) for a one-timer in the slot that beat Rask on the glove side to make it 2-0 for the Deep Freeze. Later in the period, the Chiefs would be gifted with back to back powerplays, but King Henrik stood on his head to keep the score at 2-0. Minneapolis leads despite being outshot 17-11 in the period.

Four minutes into the second period, Panarin (15) would get Second City on the board. Minneapolis would continue to struggle to get anything going, and Hayes (9) would tip a shot from Benn past Lundqvist to tie the game at 2 with 11:49 remaining in the second period. Only 2 minutes later, Minneapolis would stop the bleeding and regain the the lead on a goal from the most unlikely of sources, Andre Markov (1) scored his first of the year. The teams would trade chances for the rest of the period, but neither would score again, and Minneapolis leads 3-2 heading into the third period.

Second City would come out firing and manage to tie the game with 15:38 remaining on a tic-tac-toe play that ended with Palmieri (14) beating Lundqvist. Second City has 7 shots on goal in the first 4:22 of the third period. Coach Larry Murphy knows that his Deep Freeze have got to do something if they are going to win this game. Coach’s defensive adjustments didn’t work though, and the Chiefs made it 4-3 with 13:24 remaining. Murphy decides to make another change, and puts Neuvirth in net to finish the game along with some other offensive adjustments. This time the changes paid off, and Getzlaf (8) tied the game for Minneapolis with 8:18 to go. With the offense finally clicking, coach Murphy decides to keep the pressure on and gets rewarded for his confidence. Hoffman (14) gives the Deep Freeze a 5-4 lead with 5:21 left. The Chiefs would
pull the goalie with about a minute left but would be unable to even the score, as Minneapolis holds on for the 5-4 victory.

Jagr Mullets
Weekly Preview:
Jagr squares off against division rivals Lakeland and Columbus. Due to usage concerns, the Mullets rest their two best defensemen (Vlasic and Carlson), as well as Matt Murray and Nick Bonino. Will it backfire?
Game #1: Lakeland comes out swinging, taking the play to Jagr in the 1st period.
But Ben Bishop stands tall, and Jagr ultimately pots the first goal in the middle of the 2nd, courtesy of Jeff Carter. Jussi Jokinen adds an insurance goal at 13:07 of the 3rd, and it’s a good thing — less than 90 seconds later Henrique puts in his 17th for Lakeland. Hampton Blizzard
Weekly Preview:
Hampton hosts three times this week with action against division rivals Indiana and Thunder Bay and blood feud opponent Chicago.
Game #1:
Thunder Bay and Hampton pounded at each other for the first two periods with Hampton clinging to a 3-2 lead, but the Blizzard exploded for three unanswered goals in the 3rd period to come away with a 6-2 win.
Game #2:
For the second straight game Hampton and their opponent battled closely through two periods, but this time the Blizzard led Chicago 3-2 and popped in two third period goals to emerge with the 5-2 win. The teams typically bludgeoned each other mercilessly with lots of hits and penalties on both sides, but in this one only three minor
penalties were called in the entire game.
Game #3:
McQuaid’s power play marker early in the 3rd period was enough to send Indiana and Hampton into overtime tied 1-1, but in a rare display of 4th period heroics Tomas Hertl batted a rebound out of midair past Roberto Luongo to give the Blizzard a 2-1 win. Luongo couldn’t be faulted for much in this one as he stopped 39 of 41 shots faced.
Weekly Summary:
Hampton manages a sweep in three close games with two of them much closer than the final scores suggested.

The 3rd was 0-0 and Thunder Bay took the 4-2 win with the GWG scored by Seth Jones.

Wausau Lumberjacks
Weekly Preview:
Wausau will host the Indiana Sycamores on January 16th. The Sycamores are currently 3rd in the Atlantic division. The Lumberjacks are 2nd in the Central division. Recently the Lumberjacks have been hit by the injury bug. Keith Duncan defenseman will be out two weeks with a lower body injury. Also Jason Zucker forward is out indefinitely with a concussion. Good New is Ondrej Palat , forward returns after missing time with shoulder injury.
Game #1:
Wausau 5 Indiana 2
The Lumberjacks strike early and often. They go up 3-0 in the first period.
But the damage was done as the teams trade goals for the remaining 2 periods.
Matts Zuccarello brings the hats to ice .As he scores a hat trick.
Palat is welcomed back and he also puts the puck in the net. The Sycamores get goals from Jagr and Streit. However it wasn’t enough to change the out come of the game.
Weekly Summary:
The Lumberjacks are 1-0 at home this block. Looking forward to getting home after the long road trip.

Second City Chiefs
Weekly Preview:
One home game for the Chiefs this week against Indiana.
Game #1:
Chiefs take early lead on Landeskog’s 11th goal of the season, but Indiana answers when the ageless Jagr scores his 16th. Home side gets the next two goals, as MacKinnon and Landeskog both get their 12th of the year, and second of the game for Landeskog. But Indiana right back with goals from Bergeron and Toews (also the 12th of the year for both of them) and its tied headed to the third. And no one can find the twine in the third period, so we head to OT where it’s Kris Letang getting the winner from Tavares and Panarin.Chiefs win it 4-3 in OT.
Weekly Summary:
Lone game for Second City nets them two points over Indiana.

Scottsdale X-Men
Weekly Preview:
Not very hopeful even with four home games now that Connor McDavid is shelved for the season.
Game #1:
Spotting Ripon a 3-1 lead after 2 periods was too much of a deficit for Scottsdale despite a 3rd period rally. Jake Allen looked rusty for the X-Men between the pipes while Matt Duchene starred for Ripon with a goal and an assist.
Game #2:
The X-Men and Jake Allen both rebounded against Alamo registering a 3-2 victory. Jake Allen had 29 saves and Evander Kane shouldered the offensive load with a couple of goals.
Game #3:
Metropolitan division leader Jagr proved to be too much for a struggling X-Men squad and backup goalie Jakob Markstrom. Hagelin and Stralman each had a goal and an assist leading Jagr to the 4-2 victory at the Xavier Center.
Game #4:
Finished the week with a thriller as Long Beach battled with Scottsdale into overtime, but ultimately with :43 second left in overtime, Teuvo Tervainen put the puck past Jake Allen to come out victorious by a score of 5-4. Steven Stamkos proved to be too much for the X-Men notching 2 goals on the evening.
Weekly Summary:
Despite a home stand of 4 games, the struggling X-Men only managed 1 win and 3 standing points. With Conor McDavid done for the season, the X-Men are already setting their sights on next season.

California Regulators
Weekly Summary:
California takes all three home games this week, and inches ahead of Long Beach in the process.
