Minneapolis Deep Freeze
Weekly Preview:
Minneapolis enters the week on a 5 game winning streak at home, only point back in the Central division, as they prepare to take on a couple of Pacific division opponents.
Game #1: Ripon (4) @ Minneapolis (5) – OT
Minneapolis wins a back-and-forth game in overtime to keep the home winning streak alive.
Ripon opened the scoring early when Duchene put his 4th of the year past Cam Ward on the first shot of the game only 19 seconds in. Minneapolis wouldn’t give up that easy though, as Boyle would even the score less than a minute later, and Getzlaf gave Minneapolis the lead not long after. Datsyuk would get called for a rare roughing penalty about
halfway through the period, and Ripon tied the score at 2 with the extra attacker on Scheifele’s league-leading 12th goal of the season. Datsyuk knew he needed to make up for taking the penalty, and would give Minneapolis the lead again 5 minutes later on the Powerplay with Pietrangelo in the box for a dirty hit from behind. Datsyuk is off to a slow start with this being only his second goal of the season, so hopefully this signals a turnaround for him. The high octane first period would end with Minneapolis leading 3-2.
Continuing the back and forth scoring, Ripon tied the game at 3 about 4 minutes into the second period on Duchene’s second of the game. Ripon would take their first lead since early in the first period when Kuztnetsov scored his 8th of the season to take a 4-3 lead. Deep Freeze coach Larry Murphy was not pleased with his goaltender Cam Ward giving up 4 goals on 22 shots through the first 35 minutes and decided to make a change, bringing in Sergei Bobrovsky to try to take the momentum back. Bobrovsky would close out the second period without allowing Ripon to widen the gap. Minneapolis would keep the pressure on Ripon for the remainder of the game, tying it up with Doan’s powerplay goal halfway through the third and outshooting them 12-6 in the period. The goaltender swap paid off and Bobrovsky stood tall, stopping all of Ripon’s shots in the 3rd period and forcing overtime with the score tied at 4. Ripon came out strong to start overtime getting 2 shots in an offensive flurry early in the extra period, but would make a critical error resulting in a turnover to Loui Eriksson who took the puck the length of the ice and scored on the breakaway to give Minneapolis the 5-4 victory.Star 1: MIN Datsyuk 1 G, 3 Pts

Game #2: California (0) @ Minneapolis (6)
Minneapolis gets goals from 6 different players and Neuvirth makes 34 saves for the shutout in a blowout win over Pacific division leading California. Minneapolis came out strong and opened the scoring 4 minutes into the 1st period on Hemsky’s second goal of the year. The period would end with Minneapolis leading 1-0 having outshot California 11-6. California would try to turn it around with more aggressive play in the 2nd period but it would backfire with Hoffman getting set up and extending the Deep Freeze lead to 2 only 13 seconds into the period. Less than a minute later, Rask took a double-minor penalty for high sticking and Minneapolis capitalized again on Eriksson’s powerplay goal.
Neuvirth played a strong second period stopping all 12 shots that he faced to send the teams into the second intermission with Minneapolis holding onto a 3-0 lead.
California’s aggression to start the 3rd period backfires again, as they end up with 2 men in the box for an extended 5-on-3 just a couple of minutes into the period. Minneapolis kept the pressure on despite the score and would extend it with 2 powerplay goals only 17 seconds apart to take a commanding 5-0 lead. California continued to pepper Neuvirth with everything they had, to the tune of 16 shots on goal in the 3rd period, but it was Minneapolis who would light the lamp one last time to extend the lead to 6-0.Star 1: MIN Neuvirth 34 saves

Long Beach Ice Dogs
Game #1: Long Beach (10-9-0-1) hosts Lakeland (10-9-0-1).

Purcell gave Long Beach an early lead when he scored his 3rd of the year 2 minutes into the game. Beleskey tied it 2 minutes later on his 8th of the year. It stayed that way until Oshie scored on a delayed penalty with 4 minutes left in the 2nd period to give Lakeland a 2-1 lead. Purcell tied it with his second goal of the game with 11 minutes left in the 3rd. With 3 minutes to go in regulation Lakeland went on the power play. Long Beach was able to kill the penalty and the game went to OT. The OT had a lot of back and forth until Brodie got loose on a breakaway and scored the winning goal as Long Beach won 3-2.

Game #2: Long Beach (11-9-0-1) hosts Second City (7-11-0-2).

After dominating the first half of the first period, Long Beach got on the board on a Fabbri PP goal. Long Beach led 1-0 after the first period but the home fans are a little nervous because the Ice Dogs outshot the Chiefs 14-3 and Second City didn’t get off their first shot until 3 minutes were left in the period. Long Beach continued to dominate play in the second period but Second City tied in on a Tavares goal with 6 minutes left in the period. We head to the third period tied though Long Beach has outshot Second City 27-12. 30 seconds into the period Draisaitl gave the Ice Dogs a 2-1 lead. Second City came right back and tied the game on a Landeskog 6 minutes into the period. 3 minutes later Long Beach took the lead again on a Carlson breakaway goal. Talbot withstood a late flurry by the Chiefs and Long Beach held on for a 3-2 win.

Game #3:
Long Beach (12-9-0-1) hosts New Jersey (13-5-0-2).
New Jersey opened the scoring with Johansen tipped in a shot by Lindholm. They extended the lead to 2-0 early in the 2nd on another deflection. This time Arvidsson scored the goal. Ripon struggles to put together back to back games and loses to Chicago 4-2.
Weekly Summary:

Thunder Bay Nor’Westers
Weekly Preview:
Thunder Bay hosts Long Beach & Alamo this week, but we will also be playing the Thunder Bay at Indiana game. The team continues to hover right at .500 Not back but also not good. Scoring continues to be solid, but our defense is giving up too many shots, scoring chances and goals. Our specialty teams have been yo-yoing good-bad-good-bad.
Game #1:
Long Beach (2) Thunder Bay (3) in a shoot out. Long Beach opened the scoring – Bozak (4th), but Thunder Bay countered with two O’Reilly (5), and Saad (11th). 2-1 TB after 40 minutes. Stayed 2-2 until 19:35 when Rousel tied the game 2-2. No scoring in OT.Long Beach’s Bozak and Fabri both fail to score. Thunder Bay gets goals from Barkov and Saad to win the Shootout 2-0. Thunder Bay advances to 11-10-0 on the season.
Game #2: Thunder Bay puts on their colored Jerseys in the Thunder Dome as Indiana needs a rink to host. Indiana’s Van Reimsdyck opens the scoring and again Thunder Bay follows with 2 – Coyle (3rd) and O’Reilly (6th). Foligno ties the game at 2-2 after 40 minutes. The stars wake in the 3rd – Indiana’s Toews give them the 3-2 lead. Then the Nor’Westers Barkov ties the game 3-3. No scoring in OT.Barkov (TB) misses in the SO, Toews misses. Saad (TB) Scores, and Bergen misses. Jordan Eberle (TB) scores to win the Shoot Out 2-0. Thunder Bay advances to 12-10-0, with a road win on Thunder Bay ice.
Game #3:
The Alamo Defenders ride into the Thunder Dome for our 2nd home game of the week. Eberle fresh off his shoot Out winning goal on the 24th, opens the scoring for Thunder Bay. Gallagher makes it 2-0 Thunder Bay, but then the gale flutters out and Alamo score 3 unanswered goals – Segin (5), Petry (1), Pacioretty (5). O’Reilly scores his 3rd goal of the week to tie the game at 3-3, but the little ball of Hate, Brad Marchand scores his 7th of the year to seal Alamo’s road win 4-3.
Weekly Summary:
Ryan O’Reilly scored 3 goals 5th,6th & 7th and Thunder Bay had opportunities to will all 3 games, but again we are allowing too many shots per game and against Alamo we lost as a result. Our Power play was weak this week and we are going to need to make a defensive shake up either in pairings or replacing somebody. Right now we are lingering around .500 and that will not get us into the play-offs.

New Jersey Grizzlies
Weekly Preview:
New Jersey looking to keep up the big time scoring and hot goaltending
Game #1: New Jersey welcomes Thunder Bay to the Rock for an exciting matchup between two of the league’s top teams. Early on New Jersey was pressing Thunder Bay but it was Brandon Gallagher who got the party started giving the NorWester’s 1-0 lead. Thru the 1st period and Thunder Bay leads 1-0, NJ seems to have gotten some of the mojo back. New Jersey again had what looked like some moment only to make a mistake and leave the door open for Darren Helm to give Thunder Bay a 2-0 lead. Thunder Bay extended the lead to 3-0 with a goal by Alexsander Barkov. The game ends in with Thunder Bay winning 3-0, the night belonged to James Reimer. Reimer ended with the 34 save shut-out and his 6th win.

Three Stars
1st- James Reimer
2nd Alexander Barkov
3rd Brandon Gallagher

Game #2: New Jersey will play host to the Scottsdale X-Men who are coming in sub .500 but looking to get after a struggling New Jersey hockey team. After struggling to get on the board against Thunder Bay it was the pregame conversation of head coach Scott Stevens that lit the fire under the Grizzlies as they opened the scoring with a blast from the point by Dustin Byfuglien. Midway through period two the Grizzlies were able to add another marker from Kyle Turris and take a 2-0 lead. In the third period the X-men were able to finally cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal by Roman Josi. After the goal by the X-men Cory Schneider was able to lockdown the game and lead New Jersey to victory by a score of 2-1.

Three Stars
1st- Cory Schnieder
2nd Kyle Turris
3rd Dustin Byfuglein

Weekly Summary:
New Jersey split the home week and was upset not beating Thunder Bay. New Jersey felt they should have been able to get to James Reimer but he was truly stellar.

Corktown Suds
Weekly Preview:
Corktown, now back in the race with a bunch of offensive the past few weeks has a trifecta of home games this week.
Game #1:
Chicago- The Costa Nostra come to town leading the league with the best nickname, but a division low 13 points. Chicago wasted no time starting the game with a quick goal from Duclair (9). A very even game overall as shots and saves were high 30-27 CRK. It went to overtime where the Costa Nostra ended it quick as Niederreiter nets the game winner
Chicago 3-2 OT
W.Condon 2-4
L. Niemi 2-2
Game #2:
California- Cali came in with the Pacific’s most points and looking like a run away to take that division early in the 16-17 season. But this night belonged to the Suds as they jumped on board with a pair of 1st period goals in the 1st. The Regulators took period #2 with a pair of goals themselves. But Corktown found a way against a stellar D to net a couple goals in the 3rd. 4 goals in 10 scoring chances was making it count for the Suds.
Corktown 4-2
W. Johnson 8-6
L. Holtby 9-7
Game #3:
Brentwood- Corktown jumped on top with a pair of goals in the 1st and it was all defense and power plays the rest of the game. Manson (2) finally added to the scoring in the 3rd, but Niemi was a machine stopping 30/31 to secure another W for the Suds.
Corktown 2-1
W. Niemi 3-2
L. Lundqvist 3-4
Weekly Summary:
The Suds have scrapped together a few nice weeks in a row landing 5 points in 3 home games this week and now sit in the playoff race after such a rough start.

Scottsdale X-Men
Weekly Preview:
When you’re backs are against a wall and desperate to turn things around, having one home game in a 4 game stretch is not an ideal situation. However, it is the situation Peter Stastny and his Scottsdale X-Men are up against this week. The only home game was against Atlantic division’s 1st place Indiana Sycamores.
Game #1: Despite Indiana having a much better season, the Sycamores and X-Men appeared to be evenly matched right from the get go with similar styles. In most every facet of the game the two teams went toe to toe, however, the difference tonight was Jake Allen. He came up just short of perfect in the 3rd period when Justin Williams redirected a shot by Mike Cammalleri giving Indiana it’s only goal on 37 shots. The X-Men took an early lead in the 1st period when Connor McDavid found Jakub Voracek in a crowded slot who was helped out by a friendly crossbar. However the game deciding goal was in the 3rd period when Antoine Vermette passed back to Mark Giordano for a slapper that was the difference maker. X-Men victorious at home by a score of 2-1.
Weekly Summary:
Just the one home game which Scottsdale managed to get the much needed victory.

Columbus Brew Jackets

Columbus has 3 home games this week – trying to improve it’s position in the Metropolitan Division. Hosting Lansing, Wausau and Chicago – 1 tough, 1 pretty good and 1 weak.

Columbus retaliated with 18 in the third – all stopped. But of the 5 Lansing shots on net in the 3rd it was a PP goal by Hudler 6 minutes in that won the game.
Stars
1. Dubnyk LAN – 34 saves
2. Hudler LAN – 1 G
3. Crawford COL – 29 saves131 shots were attempted (79 by Columbus).
Game #2: Wausau skated into town and scored 2 goals in each period and had 43 shots on goal (on 61 attempts – both teams matched 61 attempts. Columbus was 0 for 5 in PPs in the Lansing game but upped that a lot with 3 in 4 attempts in this one. But they feel a goal short in matching the Wausau tallies in the 1st and 3rd periods in the 6-4 Lumberjack victory.

Scoring:
1st Period Chara and Riley Nash for Wausau, Lindberg for Columbus.
2nd Period: Chara (PP) and Giroux for Wausau, Pouliot (PP) and Kucherov

Stars: All WLJ
1. Giroux 2 G, 3 PTs
2. Chara 2 G, 3 Pts
3. Riley Nash 1 G, 2 Pts
Giroux won 20 faceoffs. Crawford (COL) makes 37 saves – the guys in
front of him didn’t help out much.

Game #3:
Not a pretty sight for Chicago as they get blanked as Columbus fires in 3 pucks in the opening period, the 1st one 20 seconds into the game (Kucherov). Johnson then scores twice in 37 seconds in the 3 minutes of the period. The first was a PP goal. Pouliot adds the 4th goal in the 2nd. Chicago tried – firing 35 shots on goal (attempting 71) but backup Miller stopped them all. Chicago failed to convert on all 5 power plays.
