2001 WORLD SERIES GAME FOUR

Tempers Get Early Jump On Hampton, Tie Series at Two

SEVERN- The Tempe Tempers, fresh off of their comeback win against the Express, cruised to a 7-2 victory tonight in Severn.   “We’re back in it, just as we thought we’d be,” said Tempe third baseman Scott Rolen. “This team wasn’t just going to roll over. Now it’s a best-of-three series, with two games at home.”  The Tempe bats got all over Severn starter Mike Hampton in the first inning, scoring five runs with four hits. The big hit of the inning belonged to Rolen, a two-run triple with two outs. Hampton pitched two scoreless innings after that, but was pulled after a rain delay.  The Express managed a run in the second inning off of a Rafael Palmeiro home run, but were held the rest of the way. A run in the eighth was all else they could manage, but by that point the Tempers had added two to their own lead. The Severn bats were unable to do much all night, only getting five hits to Tempe’s twelve.  While Roger Clemens was the starter for the winning side, he was pulled in favor of reliever Ray King, who picked up the win.   “I didn’t know why I was being pulled so early,” said Clemens,” but I was told that we had the game in hand, and that the team needed me for Game 6.”

Game Notes: Randy Johnson has had the longest start of a Tempe pitcher in the series, going 4 2/3 innings in Game 1…The last Tempe starter to record a win was Todd Ritchie, in Game Two of last year’s World Series…Ellis Burks leads the series in hitting, with a .455 average… Scott Rolen also hit a double, giving him four for the series.
