TEMPE – AP

The Tempe Tempers met the Hollywood Werewolves in the 8th annual MWBL World Series.

Game 1 – Martinez vs. Nomo
Pedro went 5 innings and Nomo went 7 innings. Both starters only gave up one run.  A 1-1 tie quickly changed when Foulke came on to relieve Nomo. Foulke gave up a walk (SB), rbi single (SB), Walk, and then a Homerun to Hildago. Foulke failed to get one out and gave up 4 runs. Hollywood rallied against Hawkins scoring two runs and had the tying run on 2nd with two outs… but Alvarez bailed him out with a key strikeout.

Tempe 5 – Hollywood 3 – Parrish W – Foulke L – Alvarez S  (BOX SCORE)

Game 2 – Alvarez vs. Wells
Hollywood abused Alvarez and Weathers for 8 runs in 2.2 innings. But Wells and Gagne didn’t do much better. Wells lost control in the 4th and Tempe rallied to make it 8-5. In the 6th Gagne made a 9-5 game a 9-8 game and Tom Gordon made it 9-9 when Hildago went deep. Hollywood rebounded and took the lead in the bottom of the 6th and Baez pitched a couple strong innings for the save. Lieberthal went 2-4 with 3 RBI’s with a HR and Berroa went 3-4 with 3 runs for Hollywood.

Hollywood 10 – Tempe 9 – Gordon W – King L – Baez S   (BOX SCORE)

Game 3 – Contreras vs. Pedro
Contreras was unhittable. He pitched a no-hitter for the first 7 innings and left the game in the top of the 8th with 1-0 lead. He struck out 8 and only walked two batters. Pedro was also impressive going 6 innings with 8 SO. Foulke pitched a scoreless 8th and lowered his era to 27.00. Hollywood brought in Gagne to hold the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 9th. Gagne lowered his era from 11.57 to 9.00 by getting two quick ground outs and then with two outs “HE BLEW IT”.
The no hitter and the game. Jenkins walked, Bagwell hit a grounder to Ensberg and he threw the ball away (ruled a hit and an error when runners advanced to 3rd and 2nd), and the MVP of the series Hidalgo hit a single to tie it up. Stynes pitch ran for Hidalgo and stole 2B. With the game 2-2 – Aubrey Huff, the player that was traded by Hollywood to Tempe for Gagne, pays his old team back with a single. Tempe wins 3-2 and shifts the momentum for the rest of the series. Ho

Hollywood’s pen finally calmed down and only gave up one solo shot to Cintron. Alvarez gave up one run over 5.2 innings and Hawkins and Parrish held the lead.ez W – Nomo L –

Tempe 4  – Hollywood 1 – Hernandez W – Baez L – Hawkins S   (BOX SCORE)

Hollywood played a great series, but its almost impossible for a team to win when its greatest strength becomes its Achilles heel. Steve penned the series as the Student vs. the Master. It should be noted that he won the 2003 TALL WS so he’s no Student…. However, the Master is still the Master.

The Achilles heel – 12 runs in 6.1 inn
Foulke 22 XZ – 1.1 inn 4 R 3 ER 20.25 ERA
Gagne 26 XYZ H – 5.0 inn 8 R 5 ER 9.00
(Gagne only gave up 12 R and 11 ER last year in the MLB)

MVP – Richard Hidalgo

The walks may have been Hollywood’s undoing. When you factor out the IBB its 21-7 or 3-1.
