Harsens Island Walleye @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview: NL East cellar owner Harsens Island comes to Columbus to play the NL Central leader for a 6-pack.
Game #1: Nolan Arenado smacks a 2 run homer (32) in the 1st and that was the Harsens Island offense. Eduardo Rodriguez however, was up to the task as he holds Columbus to 4 hits in 7 innings. Explorers do manage to score twice (singles runs in the 5th and 6th), so it’s 2-2 through 8. Rogelio Armenteros was also sharp in his spot start, the 1st inning was the only blemish on his card in 6 innings (and 6 ks).
The bottom of the 9th was the decider. Asdrubal Cabrera opens with single and Charlie Blackmon hits a walk-off double!
HIW 2-5-0 LP Matt Andriese (0-2)
COL 3-6-0 LP Jose LeClerc (2-1)
Injuries – Josh Naylor – 10 days (collision with wall)
Game #2: Another strong outing from the starters. Joe Palumbo gets the Walleye nod and goes 6 innings giving up 9 hits and a walk – but only 1 earned run. Columbus did get a 2nd as a gift.
Walleye start the scoring in the 3rd with a Mallex Smith homer (4). Seems like if he got on, it was almost a homer anyway as he steals a BUNCH of bases this week and nears his limit. But Homer Bailey was tough too – 6 innings, 6 hits, and that homer was his only surrendered run.
The Explorers do get those two run off Palumbo in the 6th and put across an insurance run in the 7th before Kyle Ryan and Liam Hendriks shut the door.
HIW 1- 6-2 LP Palumbo (2-6)
COL 3-12-0 WP Bailey (10-4) S Hendriks (19)
Game #3: The final score for this game looks more like a blowout and the tough struggle it was. Harsens Island again opens the scoring on a Johan Camargo rbi double. Tyler Beede had it scoreless through 6 but gives up 2 in the 6th. The game progresses through 7 1/2 still at 2-1 Columbus, but in the bottom of the 8th, Columbus gets 4 including a 3 run triple from Ian Desmond.
HIW 1-6-2 LP Beede (8-7)
COL 6-9-0 WP J.A. Happ (7-6)
Game #4: And the closeness continues. Walleye again score 1st with 1 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd-the 2 came on a 2 run Omar Narvaez homer (15). The 1st run was driven in by starter Kyle Wright. Matt Carpenter matched Narvaez’s 2 run homer in the 3rd with one of his own (13) and the score after 3 was 3-2 Harsens Island.
In the 6th Columbus takes the lead on in the 6th on a Victor Reyes SF and a Richie Martin rbi single. And Matt Carpenter adds the insurance run in the 7th with a rbi single.
HIW 3- 7-0 LP Wright (4-7)
COL 5-10-0 WP Julio Teheran (9-4) S Yusmeiro Petit (12)
Game #5: Now we finally get a pitchers’ duel – as if we hadn’t had some really good pitching up until now. Jordan Lyles gets the start for Columbus and pitches 8 innings – 5 hits, 2 walks, 3 ks – NO RUNS.
But…
Jose Urena decides to be in top form and he too pitches 8 innings, 3 hits, 3 walks, 5 ks, and NO RUNS.
However, after getting D.J. LeMahieu for the opening out in the 9th, Asdrubal Cabrera tags him for a walk-off homer (11) and Columbus wins 1-0!
HIW 0-5-0 LP Urena (5-14)
COL 1-4-1 WP Liam Hendriks (7-0)
Game #6: So far we’ve had 2 1 run games and 2 2 run games (and the other was a 1 run game until a 4 run 8th) – so even though Columbus has won 5 of 5, the Walleye have been there! So, why should the finale be any different? It’s not!
EXCEPT – Columbus scores 1st! In fact, the get single runs in the 1st and 2nd including a leadoff homer in the 1st from Matt Carpenter (14).
And surprise pitcher of the season – Dario Agrazal is looking to be on his way to his 9th win of the season – throwing blanks for the 1st 7 innings. Did he need the CG? ReallY?
Harsens Islands was thrilled that he tried.
Chris Davis leads off the 8th with a single and makes 2nd on an E9. Kevin Kramer then singles him to 3rd. Jacob Stallings then doubles scoring Davis and Kramer, but Stallings is nailed at 3rd stretching it a bit too far. So the game is tied after 8. So what else is new.
Nothing, Charlie Blackmon leads off the 9th and hits another Columbus walk-off homer (24)!
HIW. The homer came off reliever Austin Pruitt. Eduardo Rodriguez had his 2nd great start of the series (7 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 ks), and his 2nd ND!
And once again, a Walleye hits a wall (eyes closed I guess) and goes down to the stretcher crew – Oscar Mercado, out for 12 days.
HIW 2-5-1 LP Pruitt (0-1)
COL 3-6-1 WP Yusmeiro Petit (3-2)
Series Summary: For a series sweep, it had a mixed set of feelings. It seemed like a struggle but never seemed out of reach. Columbus continues to get clutch hits down the stretch and strong work from the pen (and a bunch of surprises on the mound!!!).
Next week – Columbus goes to Triple Creek and Harsens Island will head to Long Beach.
