Tijuana Bottle Rockets @ Virginia Sluggers

Series Preview: A tired and bushed Tijuana team comes to Virginia. After getting waylaid 4-2 by Motor City, Virginia is looking to rebound.
Game #1: VIR 4-1 W-Trevor Williams (2-1) L-Tanner Roark (0-3)

VIR scored first in the bottom of the 2nd. George Springer walked, Anthony Rizzo reached on an infield single and Carlos Santana, one of the hotter bats recently lined one into the right-field corner scoring Springer for a 1-0 VIR lead. Jackie Bradley followed with a broken-bat blooper that scored Rizzo and put runners at 1st and 3rd. The 3rd and last run of the inning came when the next batter, Jean Segura, lined a single into CF scoring Santana for a 3-0 VIR lead. VIR kept that lead and added another run in the 5th when Bryan Reynolds hit a long fly to CF that cleared the wall for a solo home run. With a 4-0 lead in the 8th, Williams gave up an RBI double to Jake Lamb for TIJ’s only run of the game. Other than that run, Williams scattered 7 hits and struck out 7 in his CG victory.

Game #2: TIJ 8-6 W-Framber Valdez (2-2) L-Ryan Borucki (1-2)

Combining for 27 hits in this game, TIJ came out quickly and scored 6 runs in the first two innings. In the top of the first Mike Freeman walked and Daniel Murphy followed with a double to RF. After Dan Vogelbach struck out, Rio Ruiz came up with two out,…”the pitch … blasted deep to BRADLEY … deep over his head…he’s racing back … but it’s gone! BOTTLE ROCKETS 3, SLUGGERS 0 ” VIR got one run back in the bottom half of the 1st on an RBI single from Carlos Santana but TIJ struck again in the 2nd. Tim Lopes drew a two-out walk and Mike Freeman singled him to 3rd. Daniel Murphy followed with an RBI single and Dan Vogelbach slashed an RBI single to RF. Rio Ruiz ended the scoring in the inning with a bloop single that scored Murphy and gave TIJ a 6-1 lead. VIR mounted a comeback when Carlos Santana blasted a 3-run homer in the 5th to narrow the TIJ lead to 6-4 but once again TIJ came back to pick up two more runs in the 6th and 7th on home runs from Mike Freeman and Scott Schebler to make it 8-4 TIJ. VIR got two more runs but Jarlin Garcia came on in the 9th to get his 3rd save of the season and preserve the 8-6 TIJ win.

Game #3: VIR 5-2 W-Luis Castillo (2-1) L-Nick Margevicius (1-4)

Luis Castillo made this game easy for the Sluggers as he threw 7.1 innings and only allowed 3 hits and 2 runs. One of the hits was a solo shot from Jake Lamb. The VIR bullpen covered the last 1.2 innings and allowed but one hit to secure the VIR victory. Rafael Devers and Carlos Santana provided all the runs for the offense as Devers had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s and Santana had 2 hits and 3 RBI,…one of his hits his 9th homer of the year.

Game #4: TIJ 7-1 W-Framber Valdez (3-2) L-Adam Plutko (1-3)

TIJ returned the favor from the previous game as Framber Valdez threw 7 innings of 3- hit, 1 run ball while striking out 10 batters. The Bottle Rockets bullpen closed the door by shutting down the Sluggers on 1 hit over the last 2 innings. Mike Freeman and Cedric Mullins had 2 RBI for TIJ and Ian Happ blasted a 2-run homer in the 6th as TIJ coasted to 1 7-1 win.

Game #5: VIR 11-5 W-Chris Archer (2-3) L-Lucas Sims (0-2)

With all 9 starters, except Anthony Rizzo, getting a hit, VIR rolled over TIJ while amassing 15 hits. With Clint Frazier and Aramis Garcia leading the way with 2-run homers, VIR had 5 players with 2 RBI’s. The Bottle Rockets tried to keep pace as they collected 10 hits but they just couldn’t get them at the right time and get any runs across. Luis Perdomo pitched a perfect 1.2 innings for VIR as he faced 5 batters and struck out 3 allowing no hits. Dan Vogelbach and Scott Schebler hit long balls for TIJ.

Game #6: VIR 4-1 W-Elieser Hernandez (1-0) L-Nick Margevicius (1-5)

TIJ came out by starting the game with a walk and an RBI double by Tim Lopes. But it stopped there. Hernandez settled in and threw 8 innings of 5 hit ball while striking out 10 batters and allowed no more runs. Meanwhile, VIR countered with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the first when Brian Anderson, who went 3-3, doubled in a run and then George Springer ripped a 2-run blast for his 5th homer of the season. Eloy Jimenez added an RBI single in the 7th and VIR’s pen pitched a 1-2-3 9th.

Game #7: VIR 6-0 W-Trevor Williams (3-1) L-Walker Lockett (0-2)

This was all Trevor Williams. 9 inning CG, 2 hits allowed, 0 runs, 14 strikeouts. However,… he was pitching to a team suffering several injuries due to AIM and 5 starters rated Tired. Still, VIR had to score some runs to win, and they did just that. And to top it off, all their runs came on homers. Solo shots from Bryan Reynolds, Rafael Devers, and Aramis Garcia along with a 3-run Baltimore Special from Anthony Rizzo accounted for all the runs VIR would score and all they would need to win and clinch a 5-2 series win.

Series Summary: Bushed and tired, Tijuana appeared to be no match for Virginia, who takes the series 5-2. In addition, the pitching staff seemed to be in disarray and was not up to the task against Virginia batters. But given that, they did okay and now make their way to Hollywood.
For Virginia, Trevor Williams 2-0 18 IP 9 Hits 1 Run 6 BB 21 K’s

Long Beach Dirt Bags @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview: Long Beach comes into Columbus with a bit of a struggle on their hands and their player roster is rather thin, leading to many AIM injuries and 2 call-ups for game 7. Columbus gets off to slow start, but rights the ship!!
Game #1: Edwin Encarnacion leads the way with a 2 run homer (7) in the 1st, Paul Severino homers later (1) and the Dirt Bags take the opener 6-3 with an 11 hit attack and solid pitching from Lance Lynn (W 1-2). Seth Lugo gets the save (3) and Homer Bailey falls to 1-2. Dee Gordon hits his 2nd homer – already becoming a legend in his own mind.
Game #2: 9th inning Robbie Grossman (2) homer off Liam Hendricks (BS 2) ties the game, but a Paul DeJong 3 run homer (4) in the 10th wins it walk-off style for Columbus 7-4. The Explorers also got a 3 run homer from Ian Desmond (2) in their 4 run 1st. Wilmer Font gave up the game loser (0-1) and Hendriks picks up the garbage win (2-0).
Game #3: Robbie Grossman goes yard again (3) along with Ryan Goins (1) and Phillip Ervin (1) as Long Beach pounces on Julio Teheran (L 3-1) for 9 hits and 6 runs in 6 innings on their way to an 8-2 win. They outhit Columbus 11-4 as Brandon Woodruff (W 1-4) tosses a 4 hitter over 6 innings. Grossman gets 3 RBIs and 2 hits in the game. Enriqure Hernandez hits a homer (3) in the losing effort.
Game #4: Mid-game of the series and the Explorers look to be in serious trouble again as they fall behind 4-0 after 4 – thanks in big part to the Justin Turner 3 run homer (13) in the 1st. 13 homers already!!!! But then Columbus unloads for 5 runs in the 5th with D.J. LaMahieu and Asdrubal Cabrera driving in 2 each. They add a 6th in the 6th and need it as Greg Garcia unloads (1) off Kyle Ryan in the 7th making it 6-5 Columbus. But Liam Hendriks (S 2) finishes out the game to save it. Jordan Lyles (2-1) gets the win, Anibal Sanches suffers the loss (1-3). Elvis Andrus (3 days) and Robbie Grossman (5) days collide which leads to Long Beach player issues.
Game #5: Dirt Bags up 2-0 after 2, then Columbus ties it with singles runs in the 4th and 5th, but then they get 3 big runs in the 8th to take it 5-2. Matt Shoemaker (1-0) gets the win in relief (it worked better this week) – except he leaves the game and will be gone for a bit more than a month!! Yusmeiro Petit gets the save (4) and J.B. Wendelken takes the loss (2-1).
Game #6: The next two games look like duplicates. At least from the score. Greg Garcia leads off the game with a triple and scored on a Jay Bruce SF. Columbus gets a 2 run homer from Charlie Blackmon (4) in the 1st and a 2 run homer from Eric Haase (3) in the 2nd and it 4-1. They add a run in the 7th and win 5-1. Interesting stats – until the 7th, the Explorers only had 2 hits (both 2 run homers). And the lead-off Garcia triple was the only Long Beach hit in the game. Homer Bailey (W 2-2) goes 7ip, 1 hit, 1 run, 1 walk, 7Ks. Lance Lynn the tough loss (1-3). Phillip Ervin gets HPB and will miss 10 days.
Game #7: Jay Bruce singles in 1 in the 1st and Charlie Blackmon homers (5) in 2 in the 2nd. He goes 3 for 3 with single, double and homer – 4th time up in the 8th he gets the IW – and then Eric Haase follows with a 3 run homer (4) to seal the game at 5-1. J.A. Happ goes 7 for his 1st win (1-3) and Matt Magill gets his 1st save. Mike Fiers goes 7 strong innings, 8 hits, 2 runs, 1 ER, 7 ks, but suffers the loss (0-2). Dee Gordon, his is 3rd triple of the year.
Series Summary: Sluggish start but a stronger finish gives the Explorers a 5-2 series win. They now travel to Bethesda to face the Bandicoots and Long Beach nurses their way home to host Valdosta.

Game #3: No nail-biting or late-inning heroics necessary in this one. Joc Pederson homered three times and drove home 6 to pace the Stalkers. YSS 11 – MCM 2
Game #4: JV to the rescue. Verlander went the distance, allowing 2 runs and whiffing 9 for the Muscle. MCM 6 – YSS 2
Game #5: Zach Davies followed Verlander’s outing with a solid 5+ IP, also allowing 2 ER. The Muscle went homerless but pulled out the old small-ball victory. MCM 7 – YSS 3
