Manhattan  Project @ Virginia  Sluggers

Series Preview: A very injured, bushed, and tired Manhatten visits a Virginia team coming off a 4-2 series win over front-running Southbend,…and dashes any hopes of Virginia making the wildcard playoff.
Game #1: VIR 8-7 W-Jace Fry (2-0) L-Brett Anderson (8-6)

MAN takes a quick 4-0 lead on the back of a Brian Goodwin 3-run homer in the 1st. VIR pulled to within 1 run on a 2-run homer from Brian Anderson that landed just inside the leftfield foul pole in the 5th. Each team got a single run in the 6th and 2 in the 7th. Going into the bottom of the 9th MAN held a 7-6 lead. After George Springer grounded out, VIR sent up Jose Rondon to PH for Joe Castro, “J. RONDON facing S. OBERG, B 9th, 1 Out, Bases Empty, Behind 6-7… The offering from OBERG … and a long one … into left field … GOODWIN looks up … adios!… good-bye! … arrividerci! … Jose ties it up! … Jose trots around the bases… he loves a trip downtown …” With the game tied at 7 all it reached the bottom of the 11th. Anthony Rizzo singled to right center and George Springer lined a single to left putting runners at 1st and 2nd. The runners moved up on a WP and Brian Anderson struck out for the first out of the inning. Upped stepped Rafael Devers. “They’re pulled in around the infield … RIZZO off third … the pitch… lined shot to right toward the line … HANIGER got a good jump … he’s back… it’s over his head … he doesn’t even bother … it’s all over! … RIZZO scores
PROJECT 7, SLUGGERS 8 And VIR pulls off the comeback win.

Game #2: MAN 6-3 W-Andrew Suarez (6-6) L-Trevor Williams (14-11) SV-T.Bashlor (6)

One bad inning did it to VIR. MAN scored 5 runs in the 3rd and VIR just couldn’t catch up. Tyler Whit gave MAN all the runs they would need with one swing, ” T. WHITE facing T. WILLIAMS, T 3rd, 1 Out, Bases Loaded, Tied 0-0… Infield back at double play depth … now WILLIAMS pitches… and he tags this one right on the button … deep to straightaway center… that could be trouble … SPRINGER racing back … big trouble … that ball is gone!
a grand salami … and they’re going to have quite a party at home plate…
WHITE will circle the bases … and he’s sure taking his time … WILLIAMS hung one
and WHITE made him pay … WILLIAMS does some landscaping on the mound
PROJECT 4, SLUGGERS 0″ Jackie Bradley hit a 2-run shot for VIR but they couldn’t overcome that grandslam.

Game #3: VIR 15-8 W-Chris Archer (12-7) Jose Quintana (8-10)

VIR exloded for 14 hits to score 15 runs in an easy win. George Springer hit a 3-run shot for VIR and Jose Rondon added a solo blast. Jean Segura also added 3 RBI in the winning cause. Nelson Cruz and Hanley Ramirez went yard for MAN.

Game #4: MAN 4-1 W-Masahiro Tanaka (12-9) L-Trevor Cahill (5-6) SV-Scott Oberg (13)

This game was Tyler White’s. He only had 2 hits in 5 at bats,…but they both cleared the wll and brought in 3 RBI for MAN. White gave MAN their first run with a solo blast in the 3rd and MAN added another run in the 4th for a 2-0 lead. then in the top of the 9th, “the pitch … WHITE swings… he hits it well toward SPRINGER … it’ll be out of here … way out of here! … a two-run shot… PROJECT 4, SLUGGERS 0” VIR got on the board in the bottom of the 9th on Carlos Santana’s 22nd homer of the year, but it wasn’t enough as MAN tied the series up at 2 all.

Game #5: MAN 8-7 W-Trevor Richards (17-8) L-Adam Plutko (4-8) SV-Scott Oberg (14)

Mitch Haniger and Hanley Ramirez combined for 7 hit in 9 at bats with 4 RBI in leading MAN to the win. Brian Goodwin, Nelson Cruz, Haniger, and J.Fernandez, all left the yard as MAN hitters pounded 16 hits with 8 of them going for extra bases. And even though VIR got to within 1 in 8th, Scott Oberg pitched a perfect 9th for the save and giving MAN a 3-2 series lead

Game #6: MAN 3-1 W-S.Alexander (5-4) L-Heath Fillmyer (6-8) SV-Scott Oberg (15)

Well, when it’s going your way, it’s going your way. Neither team could do much of anything (other than make outs) for the first 8 innings. After a Mitch Haniger walk to lead off the top of the 9th, MAN decided to PH for Hanley Ramirez and sent Je Man Choi to the plate. “J. CHOI facing H. FILLMYER, T 9th, No Outs, Runner on 1st, Tied 1-1… Firstbaseman RIZZO’s on the bag … the pitch … towering fly ball … back goes ANDERSON… never mind … it’s out of here … nothing cheap about that one … two-run shot for CHOI… he seems to like base runners … CHOI will touch them all … and he’s sure taking his time…he’s greeted at the plate…PROJECT 3, SLUGGERS 1” That was all MAN needed as Oberg came in to get his 3rd consecutive save and keep MAN’s hopes for a playoff spot alive.

Series Summary: The hopes of one team ends and the hopes of another remains as MAN takes the series 4-2 and does some scoreboard watching with the hope of continuing their season past 162 games. VIR finishes above .500 for the season and looks to improve next season.
