Sacramento  Capitals @ Long Beach  Dirt Bags

Series Summary: Long Beach improves some over the last time Sacramento came south, winning 2 of the 6 games. Still a big gap between the teams.

Rosemere  Renegades @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview: Rosemere comes to Columbus after Explorers get thrashed in Sacramento. Explorers need to to what they do well – beat teams with lesser records, because we sure have trouble with the good teams – and the chasers for the WildCard are making up ground fast…
Game #1: Explorers scored 2 in the 1st and 2 in the 8th and that was pretty much the difference because everytime after that the Renegades scored, the Explores matched in the bottom half. Each team had 1 in the 2nd and 4th and 2 in the 3rd and 7th – the 1 run in the 9th for Rosemere went uncontested. FINAL 10-7 Columbus. Marcus Semien (11) and Austin Slater (4) homered for the Renegades – both had 2 hits. Garrett Richards gives up 5 in 3 innings but avoided the loss – that went to Kyle McGrath (0-1). Dee Gordon gets 2 hits, 2 SBs and 3 rbis for Columbus and David Robertson (6-2) gets the win in long relief.
Game #2: This game starts a long almost totally dry spell of scoring for the Renegades – they will score 1 run in game 3, but that’s all the Rosemere scoring for games 2, 3, 4 and 5 – yup, 1 run in those 36 innings. So since it was a shutout: 5-0 WIN FOR COLUMBUS, the only real Rosemere news was Chad Kuhl (7-13) takes the loss. Gerardo Parra did get 2 of the 5 Rosemere hits. J.A. Happ goes 8, 4 hits, 9 ks no runs for the win (17-3). Asdrubal Cabrera homers (20) for 2 runs.
Game #3: I know I said Rosemere only scores 1 run in a 4 game stretch, and this game was it, but by no means was it a blowout. Columbus gets a solo homer (20) from Shin-Soo Choo in the first off starter Kendall Graveman (L 1-4). And Matt Carpenter doubles in another run in the 5th for a 2-0 lead. Wade LeBlanc (W 10-9) went 5.2, gave way to Drew Steckenrider before Jose LeClerc comes in for the final 2. Boy, has Jose been spotty. He gives up 2 hits in the 8th – doubles to Breyvic Valera and David Dahl – Dahl’s was for an rbi. He settles down, then gives up a walk in the 9th, but hangs on for the excuse me save (19).
Game #4: Luke Weaver and Julio Teheran square off in this one and through 5 innings, it’s 0-0! And Julio is pitching a no-hitter to boot. Then with 2 outs in the 6th, Luke Weaver of all people, singles to break it up. He nods to Teheran, who tips his cap. But that was the last anyone did anything against Teheran (no counting the Asdrubal Cabrera error that allowed another runnner). Teheran faced 29 batters, walked NONE, gave up 1 hit, 1 guy reached on E6 and he FANNED 15. That earned him a GAME SCORE of 100!! Did he win? Yup, makes him 11-8 now. That 6th inning, well it also got exciting in the bottom half as Matt Carpenter walks with the bases loaded to give Columbus a 1-0 lead. Paul DeJong than whiffs, but Cabrera then connects and it’s WAY out of the park for a grand slam (21) and a 5-0 lead. And that was all the scoring as Columbus win 5-0.
Game #5: The last of the shutouts was a veritable blowout as Columbus scores 11 on 13 hits and 2 walks. Charlie Blackmon gets the way going 3 for 3 with 3 rbis and his 21st homer. Tyler Flowers also homers (12) for 3 runs. Jimmy Yacabonis almost goes the distance but tires in the 8th and he gets the win (6-3). Jeffry Marte and Scott Kingery each get two hits for Rosemere (8 total for the team). Jerad Eickhoff takes the loss (3-18). FINAL 11-0 Columbus Tough news was D.J. LaMahieu gets HPB and will miss 6 days.
Game #6: All things do seem to end (I didn’t say good) – but the scoreless stretch for Rosemere ended in the 2nd inning when starter Garrett Richards hits a SF. He ends up staying on the mound for 7 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs while fanning 9. The 1-0 Rosemere lead vanished in the 3rd when Spenser Kieboom boomed one out of the park (3). But in the 4th Rosemere exploded for 4 runs of Jordan Lyles (L 5-6) Gerardo Parra doubles in 2, Jordan Luplow triples in another. Columbus chips away with 1 in the 4th – Paul DeJong homer (20) and 2 in the 6th – but Koda Glover (8th inning) and Alec Mills (9th inning and Save – his 1st) shut down the Explorers to give Rosemere the 5-4 win and avoid the sweep.
Series Summary: Well a sweep would have been nice, and it was within grasp, but 5 out of 6 will NOT be complained about. Turned out the Rosemere bats were lost in shipment, the ONE they used in game 1 for got chipped and thus was near useless the next 4 games. Finally their bats were discoverd by the airlines and they got to the ballpark for game 6. That’s the only way to explain it and that’s everyone’s story.
Rosemere will host Valdosta next week, the Explorers have rented a boat and will be going to Harsens Island next week.

Series Summary: Detroit sweeps Virginia 6-0 and maintains their hold on first.

Bethesda  Bandicoots @ Triple Creek  Patriots

Series Preview: 2nd Place Bethesda looking to gain some ground on the Lumber.
Game #1: Story drills two 2-run homers and Peralta crushes a 3-run job to outpace Triple Creek’s 6 run output. Gant was rocked hard early but the Coot bullpen cooled off Creek bats. Jennings’ implosion in the 7th sealed the game 1 loss for the townies.

BB 11 TCP 6

W – Hall (1)
L – Jennings (6)
S – None

Game #2: Up 4-2 heading into the 9th, Soria urps all over himself and gives up a huge pinch hit 2-run GW to Broxton. Morrow locked down the 9th and it’s quickly 2-0 Bethesda. Peralta pumped another 2-run dinger one out in the 1st.

BB 5 TCP 4

W – Ottavino (11 – watch me pull a rabbit outta my hat!)
L – Soria (BS #5)
S – Morrow (18)

Game #3: Arrieta cruised over 8+ allowing just 3 hits and 1 run. Gausman delivered a nice outing but wasn’t enough. Story deposited a 2-run homer in the 1st to make it 3 straight games where the Coots plate 2 or more in the 1st inning. The game is too easy, so the Patriots like to spot the other team a few to make things more interesting.

BB 3 TCP 1

W – Arrieta (8)
L – Gausman (7)
S – Tepera (1)

Game #4: Bethesda could only manage to score 1 in the 1st and Triple C matched that. 2-2 heading to the 5th, where we see Story (again) deliver a big blow, a tomahawked 2-run double. Triple Creek would simply roll over the rest of the way.

BB 4 TCP 2

W – Ross (12)
L – Wood (7)
S – Morrow (19)

Game #5: Ryu cruising through 7, and up 3-0, hit the wall in the 8th. Ottavino, on in relief took the brunt of the Creek turning into a category 5 rapid, as they unload for 8 runs in the 8th. The home crowd finally sees the W flying high.

BB 3 TCP 8

W – Montas (2)
L – Ottavino (2)
S – None

Game #6: Triple Creek didn’t change clothes or shower after last nights festivities and plate 5 in the 1st off Cobb. The Patriots pummeled away all day and held a nice 11-1 lead after 7. Reed and Holland then bring their usual flair to the game and allow 6 runs back before Soria can douse the fire. 25 hits on the day for both squads.

BB 7 TCP 11

W – Newcomb (9)
L – Cobb (12)
S – Soria (15)

Series Summary: Bethesda takes 4 of 6 and Triple Creek fans give Story and Peralta “the special foam finger” sendoff, happy to not see them again this season.

Pittsburgh  Lumber Company @ Jersey  Nor’easters

Series Summary: The series is split 3-3.

Corktown  Cycle @ Portland  Lumber Jax

Game #1: Zach Eflin is having a f-in good year for Portland, and continues it with a complete game 5 hit shutout. His ERA is nice 2.86.

POR 7 CRK 1
Game #4: Another Portland pitcher, Walker Buehler is also having a heck of a year, and he and McFarland combine for the 3-hit shutout. Buehler has a 1.39 ERA on the year. Cycle pitchers DeSclafani and Knebel also keep the Portland bats quiet.
POR 1 CRK 0
Game #5: Portland holds the Cycle to 1 or less runs for the third straight game, as Jack Flaherty gets the win.
POR 6 CRK 1
Game #6: All the scoring in this one occurred in the 4th inning, with the Cycle getting 2, and Portland answering in the bottom of the inning with 3.
POR 3, CRK 2
Series Summary: Portland wins 5 of 6. Their 62-75 record about 35 under what I hoped for this year. The Cycle are 42-96.

Harsens Island  Walleye @ Valdosta  Snappers

Series Preview: A couple of last place teams meet up in Valdosta.
Series Summary: Not much offense as the Snappers take 4 of 6. Craig Kimbrel picked up 3 saves in the series.

Dallas  Cougars @ Southbend  Lynx

Series Preview: Dallas travels into Southbend for a six game series. Southbend is riding an 18 game winning streak, the longest in the franchise’s history.
Game #1: Southbend open the scoring in the B2 on a Cozart rbi-1b. In the B4 SBL Escobar hits a solo-HR and Cozart adds an rbi-2b. SBL Altuve rbi-1b in the B& makes it 4-0 SBL. On the mound SBL Peralta goes 8IP giving up 4 hits and fanning 11, but is yanked so that he can come back for Game 6. Familia comes in for the T9, normally solid, he gives up walks to Polanco and Smoak, and then an rbi-2b to Gyorko and an rbi-groundout to PH Pollock. Not wanting to mess around any further Osuna is brought in and he Ks Pina to end the game and pick up his 39th save. Peralta gets the win and moves to 10-2 on the season.
SBL 4, DAL 2
Game #2: Southbend get out early in the B1 with an Altuve lead-off solo-HR and a Trumbo solo-HR. SBL Trumbo hits his 2nd HR of the game, a 2-run shot, in the B4 to add 2 more for the Lynx. DAL gets a sac fly from Abreu in the T4. SBL Lowrie hits a solo-HR in the B5 and Altuve hits a solo-HR in the B7. SBL Duda adds a 2-run HR in the B8 for an 8-1 Lynx lead. But as in Game 1 DAL does not go down easily. In the T9 Toles 1bs, Polanco bbs, SBL Bradley comes on and Smoak hits a 3-run HR, Gyorko follows with a solo-HR. Bradley is finally able to get PH Culberson to pop out to end the game. Jackson gets the win for the SBL.
SBL 8, DAL 5
Game #3: This game is all SBL Foltynewicz as he tosses a 2-hit shutout, fanning 12 and walking none. SBL got most of their runs in the B2 when they plate 5 in the inning. The big hit was a Lowrie 3-run HR. SBL Cozart adds a solo-HR in the B4.
SBL 6, DAL 0
Game #4: Dallas strikes first in the T2 with a Gyorko solo-HR and a Polanco rbi-2b. But SBL comes right back with 3 in the B2 with a Canha 2-run HR and a Cozart rbi-1b. DAL gets the lead back on a 2-rbi 1b by Rojas in the T3. SBL again ties it in the B3 with an Escobar sac fly. SBL regains the lead in the B4 when Cordell 2bs and Cozart lines an rbi-1b. After that the pitching takes over as DAL Flynn, McCarthy, and Alvarez shut down the Lynx and Miller, Moronta, Familia, and Osuna shut down the Cougars. Holland gets the win and Osuna notches his 40th save.
SBL 5, DAL 4
Game #5: Another well pitched game for SBL as 2018 ROY Anthony Banda tosses a CG shutout, giving up 4 hits, walking 2, and fanning 6. SBL plates 4 runs in the B1, all with 2 out, as Meadows bbs, Escobar 1bs, Trumbo rbi-1b, A.Jackson 2-rbi 2b, and Duda with an rbi-1b. Escobar hits his 40th HR in the B8 to close out the scoring.
SBL 5, DAL 0
Game #6: Dallas gets out ahead in the T1 when Polanco bbs and a Abreu H&R rbi-2b plates him. SBL Escobar hits a solo-HR in the B2 to tie the game. In the B3 SBL Muncy hits a 2-run HR, his 40th, for the SBL 3-1 lead. SBL Lowrie hits a solo-HR in the B5. DAL Smoak hits a sac fly in the T6 to cut into the SBL lead. DAL Smoak strikes again with a solo-HR in the T8 to bring the game within 1 run. But SBL Trumbo hits a 3-run HR in the B8 to make it 7-3 Lynx. DAL Pina hits a solo-HR in the T9 for a token run. Peralta is again solid for SBL and picks up the win.
SBL 7, DAL 4
Series Summary: Southbend sweeps Dallas to extend its winning streak to 24 games!. I’ve been playing some form of APBA Baseball since 1972, been in mail leagues since 1975, and I’ve had a lot of real good teams over the years, much better than this current Southbend team and never had a streak like this before. But somehow this team is just on one of those rolls (pun intended). What’s the MWBL League record for a Team winning streak?

Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Yonge Street  Stalkers

Series Preview: Yonge Street hosts Tijuana. A couple of squads making off-season vacation plans.
Game #1: Homer Bailey had everyones number except Trea Turner. He had 2 homers and 3 RBI but it wasn’t nearly enough. Puig hit a homer and a double while Gary Sanchez had 2 solo shots for the Rockets. TIJ 6 – YSS 3
Game #2: Caleb Ferguson got the cheap CGSO. He got through 5 and K’d 9 but thats all he needed when the rains came. YSS 2 – TIJ 0 (5)
Game #3: A cruel pitchers duel for the visitors. The game was scoreless until Tanner Roark allowed a textbook walkoff to Scooter Gennett with 2 out in the 9th. YSS 1 – TIJ 0
Game #4: Jaime Garcia improved to 7-20 as he got the better of Gerrit Cole who fell to 19-5. Yasiel Puig paced the Rockets with a 2 run shot. TIJ 4 – YSS 2
Game #5: The Dylan Covey train mowed down the visitors. YSS 3 – TIJ 1
Game #6: The home team squeezed out the victory using a “damn that’s an awful lot of itchy guys” bullpen strategy. YSS 5 – TIJ 4
Series Summary: YSS took 4 of 6 and feels kinda dirty afterward. TIJ continues the road trip to MAN next week, while YSS packs for DAL.
