Rosemere  Renegades @ Triple Creek  Patriots

Series Preview: Couple of non-contending NL West teams going 7 rounds.
Game #1: Bieber was tossing a 2-hit shutout and up 7-0 through 5 full. Triple Creeks Manager figured he would let Biebs work a little into the 6th since his pitch count was low, he chose poorly as Rosemere explodes for 5 straight hits off him. So, with nobody out and the bases juiced, Jennings and Jimenez allow a couple hits and suddenly the Renegades hang a 7-spot to tie it up. Cortes, Gohara and Gsellman held the line and Workman faltered in the 9th for the Patriots. Nine different Renegades collect a safety in a true team effort. Tough loss to the start the home stand.

RR 8 11 2
TCP 7 14 2

W – Gohara (1-0)
L – Workman (0-1)
S – Gsellman (2)

Game #2: Eickhoff was solid allowing just 4 runs over 7 complete. Alex Wood was dominant and allowed just 3 base runners all day in 7 innings of work. Hunter Wood kept the shutout intact as Triple Creek “really applied the wood” to Rosemere to even the series at 1.

RR 0 3 0
TCP 4 9 0

W – A.Wood (3-4)
L – Eickhoff (1-3)
S – None

Game #3: Up 2-0 after six the Patriots see it all slip away again in the late innings as the Renegades find holes everywhere and manufacture an extra inning W by plating 4 late. Valera and Semien both drive in 2 and Rosemere’s pen allows just 1 hit over the final 4 frames.

RR 4 7 1
TCP 2 6 2

W – Gsellman (2-2)
L – Soria (2-1)
S – Cedeno (6)

Game #4: Eovaldi tosses a shutout and allows but 3 hits and 1 walk. He needed to be sharp as Newcomb and company pitched a good game, Nate just tossed a gem.

RR 2 8 1
TCP 0 3 1

W – Eovaldi (3-4)
L – Newcomb (2-3)
S – None

Game #5: Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but up 4-1 heading into the 8th, Triple Creek was feeling good. Well, as good as they could after losing Tropeano in the 3rd inning for 32 days. The 8th inning started of with Holland facing just 4 batters (1 hit and 3 walks) to help fuel another late inning Renegade comeback. Tied up 4-4, and with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, the Patriots hidden power source, Nate Orf, delivers a bomb long enough to show a movie on, and the home squad wins it on a walk-off. The injury bug also nipped Rosemere as Slater will miss 22 days.

RR 4 8 0
TCP 5 7 1

W – Jennings (1-1)
L – Gohara (1-1)
S – None

Game #6: Kuhl was as cool as cucumber as he peeled off a 3-hit shutout. Bieber was hit early and often but somehow scattered them enough to minimize the damage to just 3 runs. Valera with a nice 3-4 1 RBI day and 3 other Renegades collect 2 hits.

RR 4 13 1
TCP 0 3 1

W – Kuhl (2-1)
L – Bieber (3-1)
S – None

Game #7: Alex Wood pitched 6.2 scoreless and the Patriot offense got a timely double and 2 solo-shots (Seager, Orf – again!) to make the series respectable.

RR 1 7 0
TCP 4 7 1

W – A.Wood (4-4)
L – Eickhoff (1-4)
S – Holland (1)

Series Summary: Rosemere takes a fun series (4-3) that featured lots of close contests and late inning heroics.

Sacramento  Capitals @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview: Sacramento and Columbus – always a good set of game. This week they meet for 6. Columbus needing a bunch of wins to stay in touch with the Evil Empire, but also to stay in playoff hunt.
Game #1: Tyler Glasnow and J.A. Happ put on a show as the teams combine for only 5 hits. One big hit, a 3rd inning Tyler Flowers homer (4) is the games only scoring. Happ gives up 3 walks, 2 hits and fans 12 for the opening game win. Glasnow gives up 3 hits in 7 innings.
SAC 0-2-0 LP Glasnow (2-1)
COL 1-3-0 WP Happ (5-1)
Game #2: Columbus opens up in the 1st and pound Zack Greinke for 5 runs and that carries them to a commanding 8-2 win. Francisco Lindor (5) gets solo homer and double in losing effort. Shin-Soo Choo (6) and Spencer Kieboom (1) homer for Columbus. Jordan Lyles continues his solid starts for the Explorers.
SAC 2-8-0 LP Greinke (6-1)
COL 8-8-2 WP Lyles (2-1)
Game #3: Well it can’t always go Columbus’s way. Max Scherzer makes sure of that as he tosses a 3 hitter for 7.2 inning – 7 ks, no runs. And he gets 15 hits support including a 4 for 5 day from Giancarlo Stanton – no homers – but 3 doubles, a single and 3 rbis. Yadier Molina gets 3 hits.
SAC 7-15-0 WP Scherzer (8-1)
COL 0- 3-0 LP Shoemaker (1-3)
Game #4: After a day off, the Explorers were hoping for come back time. Capitals send out Opener Ryan Stanek – and he goes 2 for 3 with a run and rbi! And stays in the game for 6.1 innings and gives up just 2 runs. And by virtue of a Wilmer Flores 2 run homer and a 2 run Giancarlo Stanton double, he leaves the game with a 6-2 lead. But not so fast. Columbus comes back for 3 in the 8th before the Caps decide to get serious with the bullpen. Pedro Strop closes down the 8th and then the 9th for the save.
SAC 6-14-2 WP Stanek (2-0) S Strop (12)
COL 5-11-0 LP LeBlanc (2-3)
Game #5: Series now tied and Chris Sale is called. Julio Teheran gets the call to face him. Robbie Cano opens the game with a lead-off homer (5). Corey Dickerson doubles in Mitch Moreland in the 3rd and it’s 2-0 Sale. Sacramento manager Perranoski pulls Sale in the 7th, still up 2-0 and Columbus is feeling a ray of hope. But Francisco Lindor smacks a solo homer (6) in the 8th for a 3-0 lead. The shutout however is brokens in the 9th by a Victor Reyes homer (1) but it was too little, too late.
SAC 3-7-0 WP Sale S Oliver Perez (2)
COL 1-2-0 LP Teheran (4-3)
Game #6: Columbus seeking to come away with a win to tie the series and they have J.A. Happ again going against Tyler Glasnow. This time around it was a Columbus slug fest and if it weren’t for the fact the Explorers used a few batters eating relievers it wouldn’t even have appeared close. Columbus scores in each of the 1st 5 innings: 2-3-3-3-1 before laying off. Wilmer Flores did hit a 2 run homer (4) in the 4 but it was 12-2 after 5. Happ left after 6.1, and the Caps managed a 5 spot in the 8th roughing up Tyler Olson and Matt Magill a bit.
Glasgow however was kept in for the 1st 4 innings and he gives up 11 hits, 3 walks, 11 runs and 3 homers. Charlie Blackmon (5), Asdrubal Cabrera (9) and Tyler Flowers 2(5, 6) homer for the Explorers. Flowers drives in 6 runs with 3 hits, Cabrera was 4 for 4 with 3 rbis.
SAC 7-10-1 LP Glasnow (2-2)
COL 12-13-1 WP Happ (6-1)
Series Summary: The teams didn’t disappoint as they continue to play each other tough splitting the series 3-3. Some seriously good pitching as well as some seriously big hitting. And no homers from Stanton!
Columbus goes on the road to Valdosta next week, Sacramento home to host Portland in a battle at the top of the NL West.

Jersey Nor’easters @ Long Beach Dirt Bags

Series Summary: Long Beach bounces back and takes 4 of 6 from Jersey.

Hollywood  Werewolves @ Mesa  Solar Sox

Series Preview: Hollywood is the class of the division. Mesa is better than last year but still trying to gather enough talent to compete. Seems like a good time to get Bauer some rest, along with some other regulars who risk injury with extended play.
Game #1: Mesa comes up with 2 in the 1st, courtesy of an Aldoberto Mondesi two run double. The Werewolves strike back with 5 in the third, 3 unearned because of a Carson Kelly error and run scoring singles from Vasquez, Yelich, Marte, and Cargo. Mesa gets one back in the bottom of the frame when Gruchuk doubles home Mazara. Mesa starter Wi-Ye Chen stiffens and is rewarded in the 6th when Mondesi clubs a bases loaded triple. The 6-5 lead holds up and Chen finishes the game for his 1st win of the season.
Game #2: Hollywood starter David Price holds a 3-1 lead in the 5th but Mesa explodes for 9 unanswered runs in a 10-3 win. Mondesi is the killer again with 2 homers and 4 RBI. Gruchuk homer, too. Heaney goes the distance, picking up his 5th win of the season.
Game #3: Hollywood again takes the lead, this time 6-3 through the5th. Mesa chips away at it and eventually ties it at 6 and the game goes in to extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th Jake Marisnick ends it with a 2 run homer off Randy Rosario. Mondesi does damage again with 2 runs scored and an rbi triple. Cargo and Chapman drive in 2 apiece for Hollywood but it isn’t enough to counter Mesa’s bullpen, who hurl 9 innins of one run baseball.
Game #4: OK. This isn’t supposed to happen. Mesa gets 2 homers from Eugenio Suarez from the leadoff spot. James Paxton hurls 7 1/3 innings of 3 hit ball, gets pulled after Tim Beckham hits a two run homer to get the game to 4-2 but Dyson and Jeffress shut the door and Mesa wins their 4th straight against the division leaders 4-2. Mondesi hits a harmless double.
Game #5: Yan Gomes hits a 3rd inning grand slam, chasing Hollywood ace Clayton Kershaw from the game. WHAAAAT?? The Werewolves finally have enough of this crap and hangs a 7 spot on Nick Kingham and then hang on to an 11-8 win. Ketel Marte, Goldschmidt, and Matt Chapman all go deep for Hollywood. Garrett Cooper drives in 4. He drove in 2 runs in the entire MLB season. Suarez and Gruchuk homer for Mesa. Mondesi does not. Then again, he didn’t play.
Game #6: Wi-Ye Chen and Diego Castillo hook up in a pitching duel, decided when Suarez hits a homer in ther 3rd. Chen goes the distance with a 4 hit shutout.
Game #7: David Price gets the 5-2 win for Hollywood, but hurts himself in the 6th and will miss 21 days of action. The Werewolves get 11 of their12 hits and all 5 runs off Clayton Richard in 5 innings.
Series Summary: Mesa ends up winning 5 of 7, improbably. Mondesi went 8-22 with 10 RBI, 3 2b, 2 3B, and 2 HR. Suarez went 7-18 with 7 runs scored, 7 RBI, and 5 homers.

DET jumped out to another early lead thanks to HRs by Manny Machado and Adam Jones. Late homers by Nick Castellanos and Mike Trout fueled a late MCM comeback that fell just short. Carlos Carrasco again made it look easy, striking out 12 over 7 and 1/3 innings.

Series Summary: MCM and DET split the series 3-3
Carlos Carrasco won two games, struck out 25, and gave up only 5 hits and one ER over 15 innings for DET.

The team that scored first won every game in the series.

Pittsburgh  Lumber Company @ Valdosta  Snappers

Series Preview: Pittsburgh visits Valdosta.
Game #1: Valdosta 6-2. Aaron Altheer knocke din 4 with a pair of 2B’s and Jason Hammel got his first win of the year (1-4).
Game #2: Pittsburgh 10-7. Brandon McCarthy (0-4) allowed 9 runs in 4 IP as he took one for the team and the Snappers lose in ugly fashion.
Game #3: Pittsburgh 8-6. Another piss poor start for Valdosta as Jordan Zimmerman gives up 7 in 3.1 IP. The only good news for the Snappers was Ronald Acuna, Jr smacking his first 2 career HR’s.
Game #4: Valdosta 8-0. Ronald Acuna had 3 hits including his 3rd HR as the Snappers blank the Lumber Company on just 3 hits.
Game #5: Valdosta 3-2. Adam Wainwright continues to pitch like Cy Young as he went 7 IP, improving to 5-1 and dropping his ERA to 0.96. Ronald Acuna hit his 4th HR and has homered in 3 straight after a rough start to the season.
Game #6: Pittsburgh 11-2. More terrible pitching from Valdosta and the Lumber Company pound the Snappers. LC’s James Taillon was strong for 6 IP and improved to 3-3, 1.63.
Series Summary: A little good pitching but in general some pretty poor pitching from both sides as they battle to a 3-3 split.

Dallas  Cougars @ Fremont  Cannons

Game #1: Fremont hands Patrick Corbin his first loss, winning 8-3.
Game #2: Dallas jumps on Fremont early, winning 7-2 behind big days from Gregory Polanco and Jose Abreu.
Game #3: Yoan Moncada’s 2-run double in the eighth helps Fremont flip the game to a 5-4 victory.
Game #4: Homers by A.J. Pollack, Hunter Dozier, Yangervis Solarte, and Gregory Polanco lead the Cougars to the 8-3 triumph.

Virginia  Sluggers @ Yonge Street  Stalkers

Series Preview: The Stalkers welcome the Sluggers.
Game #1: T. Williams was better than G. Cole. The home team managed just 3 hits. VIR 4 – YSS 2
Game #2: The Stalkers erupted. Four men homered, 6 men knocked in runs. Alas, it wasn’t enough. Cam Gallagher tripled twice and plated 5. Jackie Bradley hit a bomb and drove home 3. Chris Archer went 6 and gave up 6 but picked up the win. VIR 12 – YSS 9
Game #3: Virginias Whit Merrifield (3-5, HR, 3RBI) led the way in this one. VIR 6 – YSS 2

Series Summary: The Sluggers came in hot and cooled down at the end. They’ll continue on to SWD, while suddenly warm YSS packs up for Fremont.

Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Southbend  Lynx

Series Preview: Tijuana visits an improved Southbend team for a 6 game series.

Game #1: After Tijuana scores 2 in the 1st the SBL put up 11 runs off TIJ Kennedy and Ramirez in the 1st 2 innings. Big hit was Escobar’s 3-run HR in the B1. Murphy goes 3-4 with a run and rbi for TIJ. SBL plate 14 runs on 17 hits. Pivetta goes the distance for the SBL to get the win. Altuve, Lowrie, Canha, and Tucker all have 3 hits for SBL.
SBL 14 TIJ 4
Game #2: Not as lopsided, but SBL offense continues to roll as they score 8 runs on 12 hits. Holland is strong on the mound for the Lynx going 6IP giving up 1 run. SBL Escobar is 4-5 with 2 HRs and 4 rbi. Sanchez hits his 7th HR and goes 2-3.
SBL 8, TIJ 2
Game #3: Another SBL offensive explosion as they score 20 runs on 23 hits. SBL gets 4 rbi from Meadows, Duda, and Forsythe. Altuve, Lowrie, Meadows, Cave, and Duda all have 3 or more hits. McKinney is TIJ bright spot going 2-5 with a HR. Blach gets the win despite a bad outing. I believe this is the highest run total for SBL in their history.
SBL 20, TIJ 6
Game #4: SBL plate 9 more on 10 hits. Muncy goes 3-4 with 4 runs scored and 6 rbi along with his 3 HRs (9th, 10th, & 11th). Foltynewicz is solid giving up only 2 hits and 3 runs (1 earned). Valbuena hits his 6th HR for TIJ.

SBL 5, TIJ 0
Game #6: SBL finish off the sweep with a 7-1 win. Muncy hits his 12th, Meadows is 3-3 with 2 rbi. Pivetta is strong on the mound going 6IP giving up 4 hits and fanning 5. Russell is 2-4 with a run scored for TIJ
SBL 7, TIJ 1
Series Summary: SBL takes the series over TIJ 6-0. SBL scores 63 runs in the 6 game series. I don’t recall ever having an offensive series like that before. However, alot of the offense can be attributed to the MM leaving TIJ pitchers in a bit too long after they were reduced.
