Sacramento  Capitals @ Bethesda  Bandicoots

Series Preview:  a battle of 1st place teams with West going East as Sacramento goes through the motions preparing for post-season takes on Bethesda as the Bandicoots try and hold off Jersey to make it into the post-season.
Game #1:  Zack Greinke was good, but fortunately for Bethesda Hyun-Jin Ryu was brilliant throwing a four-hitter as Bethesda shut out the Capitals 1-0.
The lone run came in the 6th when Anthony Rendon led off the inning with a triple and scored on Jonathan Schoop’s line drive single into left field.
Greinke went 6-2/3 with two walks and seven strikeouts. He allowed the lone run on six hits.
Ryu fanned six and walked just one.
BETHESDA 1 – SACRAMENTO 0
Win-Ryu (9-4)
Loss-Greinke (14-8)
HR-none
Game #2:  Logan Morrison and Robinson Chirinos hit back-to-back home runs off Pedro Strop in the bottom of the 8th to lift Bethesda to a 6-2 win.
Max Scherzer was his usual great self fanning nine in just seven innings for Sacramento before giving way to Greg Holland and Strop. The lone damage against the perennial Cy Young candidate came in the 3rd when none other than Bethesda starting pitcher Jake Arrieta connected on his first homer of the season and then Anthony Rendon walked and came around to score on David Peralta’s single.
Albert Pujols and Evan Longoria each had a pair of hits for Sacramento.
BETHESDA 6 – SACRAMENTO 2
Win-Arrieta (16-10)
Loss-Scherzer (23-3)
HR-BET: Morrison (34), Chirinos (17), Arrieta (1)
Game #3:  Bethesda counts a 3-spot in the 1st inning and then gets shut down by Danny Duffy and Co. but it was enough as Alex Cobb was in very un-2018 form allowing only six hits in a 3-1 Bethesda win.
Jonathan Schoop was the lone Bandicoot with two hits while Robinson Cano had two for Sacramento including his 19th dinger of the season.
Duffy allowed three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings for the Capitals while walking only two and striking out eight.
BETHESDA 3 – SACRAMENTO 1
Win-Cobb (14-2)
Loss-Duffy (13-9)
HR-SAC: Cano (19)
Game #4:  Chris Sale took the mound for Sacramento in this one … really? Greinke, Scherzer AND friggin’ Sale? How has this team not won 200 games?
Anyway, Sale was great. He went 7.1 innings and gave up all of four hits with no runs and one walk and just for laughs struck out 13. Nice.
Sacramento beat Sonny Gray around for five runs (three earned) in the 4th for much more support than Sale would need. Albert Pujols did the bulk of the damage in that inning with a dramatic 3-run line drive homer off the sternum of Haagen Dazs vendor Eduardo Verennes deep in the left field bleachers.
Josh Reddick had a walk and three hits and scored a run for the Caps. Trey Mancini scored, drove in a run and walked three times in the game as well.
Lorenzo Cain had a couple of hits for Bethesda while Anthony Rendon hit his 43rd double.
SACRAMENTO 6 – BETHESDA 1
Win-Sale (19-6)
Loss-Gray (8-8)
HR-SAC: Pujols (6)
Game #5:  Tyler Pill moved to 5-0 on the season as the equal opportunity Bethesda Bandicoots homered four times against Sacramento pitching to take it by a narrow 6-4 margin.
Minnesotan Aaron Slegers took the brunt of the Bandicoots power show allowing homers to Trevor Story (2nd inning) and David Peralta (4th inning) before being pulled down 4-2 with two outs in the 5th. Slegers was pretty much ineffective as he gave up six hits, walked four and fanned just one. The Pedor duet of Strop and Baez pitched a little over two innings with each of the righty relievers allowing a homer.
Fountain of Youth drinker Albert Pujols went deep once again – this time off Pill in the 4th inning.
Evan Longoria singled and doubled to drive in two for Sacramento. Logan Morrison was 2/2 with 2 walks, 3 runs scored, a double, a homer and an RBI to lead Bethesda.
Easily the biggest surprise of the season for the Bandicoots, Pill gave up a pair of runs over six innings with only four hits allowed although he too had his share of location issues striking out just one but walking four.
BETHESDA 6 – SACRAMENTO 4
Win-Pill (5-0)
Save-Morrow (11)
Loss-Slegers (0-1)
HR-SAC: Pujols (7); BET: Peralta (14), Morrison (35), Story (21), Miller (11)
Game #6:  Another day, another game with Hyun-Jin Ryu inexplicably keeping the Capitals’ bats dormant and outpitching Zack Greinke as Bethesda wins 5-2.
Ryu struck out nine in an out short of 8 innings of work while allowing only one run on five hits and two walks.
The game was not without its excitement as the over-confident Bethesda manager inserted Adam Ottavino to close things out in the 9th with a 5-1 lead, but things quickly went to hell with the Rockies’ righty loading the bases on a walk to Robinson Cano between singles by Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina. Seldom-used and running on fumes Steve Cishek was brought in did allow Pujols to score but was able to put out the fire and preserve the win.
Anthony Rendon had three hits for Bethesda while Delino DeShields and Molina each had two for Sacramento.
BETHESDA 5 – SACRAMENTO 2
Win-Ryu (10-4)
Save-Cishek (21)
Loss-Greinke (14-9)
HR-BET: Jay (3), Ruiz (4)
Series Summary:  Clearly now the best team in the universe, Bethesda snatches five of six from Sacramento thanks to a lot of over-achieving by starting pitchers Ryu and Pill.

Series Summary:  The teams split the series 3 games each.

Valdosta  Snappers @ Tempe  Tempers

Series Preview:  Valdosta visits Tempe in what should be a preview of an all NL Central Wild Card series.
Game #1:  This was a marathon that lasted 17 innings and saw a combined 61 players used by both teams (Valdosta 24, Tempe 33). Tempe played from behind most of the way. Tying it in the bottom of the 1st at 2-2, then 5-5 in the 3rd, and finally 7-7 in the 7th. The score remained tied until the top of 17th when Altherr’s hit an RBI triple for the first run in the last 10 innings and put Valdosta up 8-7. In the bottom of the 17th Tempe loaded the bases with two outs. With the pitcher’s spot up and only one hitter left on the bench, Tempe had to turn to .210 hitting Mike Avilles. Tempe also decided to use a tired Lester to run for the slower Beltre who was the potential winning run at 2nd. Avilles smacked a grounder to right field scoring Ozuna from 3rd and Lester beat the throw at home for the win.
Tempe 9-8 – 17inn
Game #2:  Perez was back behind the plate for Valdosta and he gunned the first two runners in the 1st which limited the damage when Votto hit a HR. Beltre added a RBI single in the 3rd and a two RBI single in the 5th put the game out of reach.
Tempe 5-3
Game #3:  Perez two run homerun in the 4th and a Smith two rbi double in the 5th was all Wainwright needed.
Valdosta 7-3
Game #4:  Altherrs had an early solo home run in the 1st, but Chacin settled down and pitched 6.1 Innings for this 17th win of the season. Braun and Ozuna homered for Tempe.
Tempe 4-2
Game #5:  Cueto struggled early, but the pen came on and locked it down. Adams launched two homeruns as Tempe cruised to an easy win.
Tempe 9-4
Game #6:  Tempe scored three in the 6th behind a Cespedes pinch hit homerun to break a 2-2 tie. Hildenberger pitched his final 3.2 innings of the season for the win.
Tempe 6-2
Series Summary:  Tempe ended up taking 5 of 6 in what really was a much closer series. Valdosta just couldn’t get the clutch hits when they needed them.

Virginia  Sluggers @ Southbend  Lynx

Series Preview:  Virginia travels to Southbend for a 6 game series. Neither team is going anywhere real fast.
Game #1:  VIR 7, SBL 3

VA gets strong outing from Adleman (6IP only 1 ER) and gets HRs from Segura, Santana, and Castro. SL Foltynewicz loses his 16th.

Game #2:  SBL 7, VIR 1

SBL A.Banda continues his dream season as he wins his 18th going 7IP giving up 1ER and fanning 6. Altuve is the hitting star going 3-3 w/ 5 rbi on 3 HRs. Altuve with this game joins the 30-30 club on the season with 32 HRs and 31 SB

Game #3:  SBL 8. VIR 7

SBL got out early with 4 in the 1st only to see VIR plate 6 in the 5th for a 7-5 lead. SBL defense was shoddy as 3 errors helped the VIR scoring. SBL gets one in the 8th and in the SBL 9th Canha ties it with a solo-HR off Rivero. Forsythe would later walk, followed by a Lowrie 2b, and Altuve would win the game with a walk-off rbi-1b.

Game #4:  VIR 5, SBL 2

Score was closer than the game really was as VIR rolls behind Cahill’s strong outing. Newly acquired D.Travis was the VIR star scoring two runs along with a solo-HR. Rivero comes on for his 25th save for VIR.

Game #5:  VIR 7, SBL 4

SBL were up 4-2 going into the 5th when VIR took over. Springer hits a solo-HR and then a Bonifacio rbi-1b and a Flaherty sac fly gave VIR the lead. VIR adds 1 in the 6th and their bullpen does the job for the win Gearrin picks up save #3.

Game #6:  SBL 6, VIR 4

A.Banda picks up win #19, but not before a VIR scare in the 9th. SBL up 6-2 going into the 9th almost blow it for Banda when PH Devers 1bs, Merrifield rbi-3b, Bradley comes on for SBL and gives up a Segura rbi-1b. Santana then 2bs and with none out there are runners at 2nd and 3rd. Bradley comes through as he gets Bonifacio F8, Amrkakis Ks, Evans bb’s, but Bradley F9 to end the game. SBL Cozart hits 30th HR in the game.

Series Summary:  Series ends up as a 3-3 split.

Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Yonge Street  Stalkers

Series Preview:  YSS was kind enough to offer the visitor’s(Tijuana) the chance to play this series in order to better manage their roster heading into the playoffs. It was much appreciated and needed as Tijuana lost 2 of it’s top 3 starters to injury(Kluber, Nelson) during this series.
Series Summary:  Tijuana took the first 3 games of the series and had game 4 well in hand, leading 4-1 going into the 9th. Working with a depleted bullpen, D. Phelps gets the call to lock up the win. He promptly gets lit up for 4 and YSS gets the walk off. This demoralized the visitor’s from Tijuana, they couldn’t shake it off and end up dropping the last 2 games, resulting in a series split!
