Another wild one, with MCM falling behind 5-0 early, but using a 6-run 4th to take the lead (which they couldn’t hold). The bullpens took turns blowing leads, with MCM finally

Game #6:  VIR 4 – MCM 3
WP: Sewald

Harsens Island  Walleye @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview:  Harsens Island brings the Walleys – Columbus management loves fish-frys! Explorers seeking to extend their winning streak into perhaps non-chartered territory. But those Walleyes pack some punch and seems like former Explorer prospect Luis Severino will be throwing fire against us.
Game #1:  Jose Urena and Matt Shoemaker (and company) hook up in a tough pitcher’s duel. Only scoring comes in the 6th on a Paul DeJong 2 run homer (20). 6 Explorer relievers toss 6 innings of 2 hit ball and David Robertson gets the save.
HIW 0-5-2 LP Urena (5-13)
COL 2-6-1 WP Yusmeiro Petit (3-1) S Robertson (29)
Game #2:  J.A. Happ didn’t HAPPen to have it today. Neither did the Columbus defense as they give up 3 errors leading to 2 unearned runs including 1 in the 1st. Solo runs in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd plus a 3 run 5th including a 2 run homer from Matt Davidson (10) made it 5-0 Harsens Island. But wait, Columbus gets 5 in the bottom half, including a 3 run homer from Dee Gordon (3). Then it became a game of homers and who could score next and could anyone hold on. Matt Carpenter (21) gets a 2 run shot, Ryan Zimmerman (25) a solo shot, Nolan Arenado (23) blasts one over the fence. Explorers go into the 9th with a 9-7 lead and Rusin gets the call to stay on the hill and that’s when Arenado unloaded. David Robertson was then summoned to get the final 3 outs – and he did.
HIW 8- 9-1 LP Duensing (0-3), BS (2)
COL 9-10-3 WP O’Day (4-6) S Robertson (30)
Game #3:  Well the streak has reached 19 – but that last one wasn’t easy – and the Walleye weren’t finished off! Columbus gets off to a 2-0 start in the 1st but then the Walley score the next 6 runs, 2 in the 2nd, 3rd and 5th! Parker Bridwell was hit hard, 7 hits in 4.1 innings including a 2 run homer from Brett Gardner (13) and a solo shot by Chase Utley (9). Brian McCann smashed a 2 run double, and Gardner added a triple and scored. Explorers bite into the fish for 2 in the 5th, then the teams trade runs in the 6th and Harsens Island leads 7-5 after 6. Then in the 7th Matt Carpenter comes up with 2 on and lefty Andrew Chafin is called on and Carpenter unloads on the 1st pitch for a 3 run game winning homer (22). Tony Watson pitches a perfect final two innings to close it out.
HIW 7-11-1 LP Chafin (2-1) BS (1)
COL 8-10-0 WP Luis Avilan (3-0) S Watson (2)
Game #4:  Gio Gonzalez and Ervin Santana square off in game 4 and they each pitch a long way. Santana goes 7 innings and gives up 2 hits and leaves for a pinch hitter in the 7th. But nothing comes of it. He gives up 2 hits, Gio meanwhile has given up but 2 as well and after 7 it’s 0-0. Then in the 8th, the Explorers take advantage of some control issues and a hit to score the go ahead run. Gio goes 7.2, 3 hits, 4 walks, 8 Ks and 1 run. We go to the 9th with Columbus up 1-0 and David Robertson comes on to close it out – until Brett Gardner hits a 2 out homer (14) to tie it up. Free Baseball time extends into 11 innings. Then with 1 out, Holt walks, steals 2nd, Avila is giving the IW and Nunez grounds one through deep short into left. All the runners kept going and Holt was safe with the winning run. Explorers sneak in another win to keep the streak alive.
HIW 1-4-2 LP Michael Dunn (0-1) 11 innnings
COL 2-4-1 WP O’Day (5-6) BS Robertson (4)
Game #5:  That one was tight, close and heart pounding – but Luis Severino is coming in game 5. Well Charley Blackmon gets a solo shot in the 1st (his 23rd). But then it’s zeros for Columbus through the 5th. Lance McCullers, who has a long scoreless streak going himself continues to blank everyone. It’s 1-0 Columbus as the 6th starts but Nolan Arenado doubles in Carrera in the 6th (after Carrera walked). But Columbus gets it right back in the bottom half. So they were nursing a 2-1 lead into the 8th and then with Duensing pitching, Columbus scores 4 more runs including a Blackmon 3 run homer (24) his second of the game. So the 6-1 final may look easy, but it was a long drawn out process.
HIW 1-3-1 LP Severino (8-11) (with a 2.64 era)
COL 6-5-1 WP McCullers (12-0)
Game #6:  The streak has not reached 22 games and Jose Urena is up against Matt Shoemaker again. And again, he gets the lead when HE DRIVES in 2 runs in the 5th for 2-0 lead. However, in the bottom half Matt Carpenter unloads for a 2 run homer (23) and 3 batters latter Paul DeJong clubs a 3 run shot (21) and it’s 5-2 in the 5th. That inning produced all the scoring. Both pens allowed nothing.
HIW 2-4-0 LP Urena (5-14)
COL 5-9-0 WP Shoemaker (7-3) S Chris Rusin (5)
Series Summary:  So, the Explores manage a sweep that provided lots of excitement for fans and included several come from behind affairs. And the streak has now reached 23 games. And even with that, it’s still really hard to catch those Tempe Tempers – they are THAT good!!

Dallas wins a thriller 7 to 5.

Game #3:  Jose Abreu hit his 21st homer of the year to extend his hitting streak to 9 games and put the Cougars ahead 3-0 midway thru the game. Abreu is having another quality season. In the league he entered this games 8th in batting average at .296, second best in hits with 128, number two in runs batted in with 87, second in multiple hit games with 38, and 3rd in intentional walks with 7.

The Bottle Rockets began their comeback in the 7th with two outs. After Ian Happ hit a solo home run his 24th of the year Edwin Encarnacion stepped after the next to batters reached base, “The runners take their lead … quick move to the plate … ENCARNACION grounds it toward short
ROJAS darts to his right … but it slides under his outstretched glove … PRESLEY running in
still running … LAMB’s well around third … UPTON’s around second … they’re waving LAMB in … here comes the throw home … UPTON’s going for third on the throw, but ENCARNACION’s holding at first. LAMB scores … ABREU cuts it to third and he’s out by inches! go to town, COUGARS! they extinguish the tying run! the coach was waving him on … that’s Bumpus Head what was he thinking about? takes a big runner off the bases … he plays by a different book. So the single drives in one and they are within one … score now 3-2 “

Dallas holds on to win their third straight against Tijuana.

Game #4:  Cory Kluber stopped the bleeding for the Bottle Rocket with a complete game two hit shutout. Both hits were doubles one by Jose Abreu to continue the hitting streak at 10 games.
Game #5:  Dallas put up crooked numbers in the 4th turning a 3-2 deficit into a 6 to 3 advantage. Josh Harrison tied the game with his 20th double of the season adding to his hitting streak at 9 games. He would score on a single by Miguel Rojas, who would score on Jose Abreu’s 35th double of the year. The scoring ended when Abreu was eventually forced home on a bases loaded walk.
Rojas would later double home two more runs in the 8th. Dallas goes up 4 – 1 in the series winning 8 to 3.
Game #6:  No scoring until Josh Harrison hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 8th.

Jake Lamb led off the 9th for Tijuana, “The pitch to LAMB … banged to right … it’s in there … PIRELA fields it LAMB’s going for second … he’s a dead duck … PIRELA’s throw … way off line! LAMB’s in safely … PIRELA picks up an error … score that a single … that extends the streak now 23 games in a row on base … he has now delivered 100 hits this season”

The next batter was Yasiel Puig, “DIAZ spins and fires to second … the tag … safe! … DIAZ’s back on the rubber the offering to PUIG … PUIG jacks one to deep left … PRESLEY retreats … still going back to the track … to the wall … gone! … home run for PUIG … PUIG will touch them all and he’s sure taking his time … his 24th homer … the BOTTLE ROCKETS have their first big runs tying the game at 2.”

In the bottom of the 9th Jose Abreu extends his hitting streak to 12 games by leading off the inning with his 36th double of the year.
