Sacramento  Capitals @ Triple Creek  Patriots

Series Preview:  NL West leading Capitals take on slightly below .500 Patriots.
Game #1:  Graveman twirls a nice one to defeat Vargas. Robertson and Headley homer for Triple Creek.

SC 1 TCP 4

W – Graveman (2)
L – Vargas (4)
S – Reed (6)

Game #2:  Pitcher’s duel with Sale vs. Wood. Both pitchers allow nothing through 7 full. Crick on in relief of Wood allows 2 doubles in the 8th to sport the L.

SC 2 TCP 0

W – Sale (3)
L – Crick (1)
S – Strop (4)

Game #3:  Triple Creek has it’s work cut out today vs. Scherzer. Capitals get to Gausman in the middle innings to build a 3-0 lead. Max would be pulled after 1 out in the 7th and the Patriots capitalize by plating 2 but that only matches the 2 Sac scored in the top half of the inning.

SC 5 TCP 2

Game #4:  The day off did both teams some good. Duffy scattered 8 hits though 5.1 but only allowed 3 runs. Newcomb couldn’t find the strike zone and piled up 7 walks in his 4.1 innings of work. Leading 6-3 heading to the bottom of the 9th, Triple Creek made it exciting with back-to-back solo shots off the bats of Rivera and Bellinger, but come up short.

SC 6 TCP 5

W – Duffy (3)
L – Newcomb (3)
S – Bradford (1)

Game #5:  Vargas pitches better and the bullpen supported with zeroes. Cotton and company used smoke and mirrors to limit the 12 hit damage.

SC 4 TCP 2

W – Vargas (3)
L – Cotton (3)
S – Hughes (3)

Game #6:  Sale wasn’t quite as sharp this time around and Buchholz’s 1st start of the year was a surprise. Cano’s 3 RBI’s were huge as the Capitals sneak out a nail-biter.

SC 3 TCP 2

W – Sale (4)
L – Buchholz (1)
S – Hughes (4)

Series Summary:  Patriots played Sacramento tough but could only manage a 1-5 mark.

Harsens Island  Walleye @ Bethesda  Bandicoots

Series Preview:  Bethesda takes home field against the Harsens Island Walleye, trying to hold off the newbies from their assault on first place in this early season matchup in the NL East. Both teams feature some good starting pitching so low-scoring games are expected to the the standard fare.
Game #1:  I did mention low scoring, right?
For the Walleye, low turned into “No” as Alex Cobb continued to dominate NL hitters tossing a four-hit shutout with Bethesda counting three runs late in the game to come away with a 3-0 win.
Cobb improved to 3-1 on the year with the win while Walleye starter Jose Urena fell to a disappointing 1-4 with 7 pretty good innings of pitching until he finally ran out of gas in the 8th when he gave a no-out two-run double to Travis Shaw.
Jon Jay scored the other Bethesda run on a wild pitch by Urena in the 6th which gave Bethesda a 1-0 lead. Pretty cheesy but we’ll take it. Jay and Shaw each had two hits for the Bandicoots. Phil Gosselin was the offensive mastermind the Harsens Island with a double.
Game #2:  Runs were once again a scarce commodity with Bethesda coming back from a 1-0 deficit thanks to a Lorenzo Cain solo shot off Eduardo Rodriguez with one out in the 8th to give the Bandicoots a 2-1 win.
Cain’s homer spoiled an otherwise brilliant outing by Rodriguez who struck out 10 in 7-1/3 innings with only three hits allowed. For Cain, it was homer #4 on the year. The loss dropped Rodriguez to 4-2 on the season but still with a stinkin’ good 2.83 ERA.
The Walleye scored their lone run in the 3rd inning when speedy Rajai Davis … yes he is still alive … blooped Sonny Gray’s curveball over 2nd base which allowed another speedster, Brett Gardner, to easily score from 2nd base after he had singled and stolen 2nd base to open the inning.
Later with the game tied at 1-1 in the 8th inning, Gardner opened against Bethesda reliever Brandon Morrow by tripling high off the right field wall, but Morrow got Davis to pop out to shallow left field, Ezequiel Carrera fouled out to 3rd and then Nolan Arenado struck out to end the threat.
Morrow (2-2) earned the W for his efforts and Steve Cishek picked up his 4th save of the year with a scoreless 9th.
Ageless Carlos Beltran had two hits for the Walleye with a single and a double. While the Walleye had difficulty crossing the plate, they had no trouble getting on outhitting the Bandicoots 9-3, but stranding 13 runners in the game.
Sonny Gray went five shaky innings for the Bandicoots allowing seven hits and four walks against six Ks but somehow managing to keep runners from coming around to score.
Game #3:  Carlos Beltran blasted his 4th homer of the season in the 5th inning off Rich Hill, but it was all the Walleye could manage as they fell 2-1 to Bethesda for the second straight game.
The Bandicoots spoiled a pretty solid start by anything-but-solid Matt Harvey who gave up just one earned run in six innings.
The game was a sloppy one with three errors by the Walleye (Ok, actually all three by shortstop Dusty Coleman including the throwing error in the 1st inning which allowed Jarrod Dyson to eventually score).
Aledmys Diaz, Carlos Ruiz, and Brad Miller each had a couple of hits for Bethesda. Rich Hill improved to 4-1 giving up one run in six innings of four-hit ball. He also walked once and struck out seven. Steve Cishek’s perfect 9th earned him his 5th save of the season.
Game #4:  The Bethesda Bandicoots homered five times – three off stud lefty Gio Gonzalez – en route to a 14-3 route of Harsens Island.
Gonzalez and relievers Scott Alexander, JJ Hoover, and Michael Dunn combined to allow 12 hits and seven walks. The runs were scored evenly against the Walleye pitchers with six against Gonzalez, two against Alexander, four against Hoover, and two on Dunn.
Aledmys Diaz (2), Trevor Story (5), Logan Morrison (5), AJ Ellis (2) and Brad Miller (3) each homered for Bethesda.
Rajai Davis, Matt Davidson, and Omar Narvaez each had two hits for Harsens Island. Ellis was the offensive star for the ‘Coots with three runs scored and three RBIs and Miller drove in four after being inserted mid-game and notching two hits in two plate appearances.
Game #5:  Anthony Rendon’s two-run shot off reliever Keynan Middleton in the bottom of the 8th helped lift Bethesda to a 4-1 win over Harsens Island.
It was a costly loss for the Walleye. Outfielder Jake Smolinski was hit by a Jake Arrieta pitch in the 3rd inning and is expected to miss at least a month with a broken hand.
Luis Severino went six strong for Harsens Island, allowing just one earned run on two hits while fanning seven and limiting the Bandicoots to a single walk. All three 8th inning runs came off Middleton as he tried working into his 2nd inning, but left after failing to register an out.
Jeff Rutledge drove in Phil Gosselin with a single in the 2nd inning for the Walleye lone run.
The Bethesda staff limited the Walleye to six singles on the day. Ryan Madson (1-1) got the win with a scoreless 8th inning and Steve Cishek picked up his 6th save of the season and third of the series after giving up a hit and striking out one in the 9th. Rendon’s homer was his sixth of the season.
Game #6:  The game one rematch was spoiled for Harsens Island by Jose Urena’s four-run meltdown in the 4th inning that led to a Bethesda 7-3 win.
With the game tied 1-1 in the 4th, Urena gave up homers to Aledmys Diaz (3) and David Peralta (3) before leaving at the end of the inning. The Walleye would later avange the Peralta homer by having their relief pitcher Drew Storen knock him upside the head and put him out of commission for about a week.
Cobb (4-1) won for the second time in the season with an inconsistent performance over 6 innings that saw him allow two runs on seven hits, three walks and just a single strikeout.
Matt Davidson (2) smacked the Walleye sole homer and it came off Erasmo Ramirez, of course, who was struggling unsuccessfully to get his gargantuan ERA under 10.00.
Ryan Tepera earned his first save of the season with 2/3 of an inning after he bailed out Jonathan Holder in the 9th to preserve the win.
Game #7:  Preserving the win was not something the Bethesda bullpen had to worry about in the series-ending game.
Brian McCann’s two solo homers were overshadowed by Carlos Beltran’s 8th inning fly ball that landed just a foot past right fielder Jon Jay’s outstretched glove to land in the cheap seats and give the old man yet another grand slam. Nice!
Eduardo Rodriguez was great once again, but this time the Walleye offensive support was there to propel him to 5-2. He tossed eight shutout innings with only seven hits and two walks while striking out 10.
Sonny Gray (3-2) allowed one run in five innings to get the L. Jay had two hits for Bethesda including the team’s only extrabase hit – a double in the 5th.
Series Summary:  Bethesda wins a bunch of close games that could have gone either way and flukes out six wins in seven tries against the Walleye to provide at least a temporary small cushion between them and the rest of the division.

Game #1:  Detroit 8, Southbend 2
After a Joyce 2-run 3b in the 1st, Carrasco settles in and is strong the rest of the way for the win. In the T4 a Descalso sac fly and a passed ball, scoring Goins, gives DET the lead for good. K.Morales hits his 10th HR in the win. SBL commit 3 errors to help out DET.
