Jersey  Nor’easters@ Bethesda  Bandicoots
Series Preview
Jersey heads into Bethesda with a 2.5 game lead over the Bandicoots as the home team chases the leaders in the uber close NL East.
Game #1: The long ball was the story in the series opener with each team smacking three but the difference was Adrian Gonzalez’s three-run shot in the 8th to give Bethesda a 6-5 come-from-behind win. Leonys Martin (2), Brandon Barnes (5) and Howie Kendrick (5) went deep for Jersey. Bethesda’s homers came off the bats of Anthony Rendon (8), Gonzalez (15) and Jimmy Rollins (12). Bryan Shaw’s tater offering to Gonzalez got him the blown save and the loss to put his record at 1-2 while for Bethesda the win went to Fernando Salas (4-3) and the save to Jonathan Broxton (11) with a three-up, three-down 9th. Jersey lead down to 1.5 games …
Game #2: Hard to say anything positive about this one for the home town fans as Jersey pounded the living shit outta starter Tyson Ross and the  Bethesda bullpen as they cruised to a 11-2 win over Bethesda. Catcher Brayan Pena scored twice off of three hits for Jersey and Jay Bruce smacked his 11th homer of the year, but it was Chris Coghlan (3 runs, a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs) and Leonys Martin (one run, two hits, three RBIs) that led the charge. Adrian Gonzalez hit his 16th homer of the season in a bit of charity offered up by Jersey reliever Charlie Furbush in the 7th. Kyle Hendricks was nearly unhittable on the mound for Jersey allowing just one hit and a couple of walks in six shutout innings. Jersey lead back to 2.5 games …
Game #3:
Alex Cobb walked five in a sloppy start, but was hard enough to hit that he managed to minimize the damage and improve to 6-3 on the year with a 4-1 Bethesda win. Anthony Rendon and Travis Snider each had two hits for Bethesda while Howie Kendrick walked twice and had one of the three Jersey hits for the visitors. Jonathan Broxton earned his 12th save for Bethesda. Jersey lead down to 1.5 again …
Game #4:
The seesaw swings back to Jersey as Wily Peralta blanked the Bandicoots for eight innings as they got by Bethesda 2-0 to even up the series and re-establish a 2.5 game lead. Howie Kendrick doubled, tripled and scored both runs for Jersey to lift Peralta to a 6-3 record. Brad Boxberger got save #13 while Jake Odorizzi fell to 2-4 after his first quality start at home – he gave up one run on just two hits while fanning five in seven innings. David Peralta had three hits in a losing effort for Bethesda.
Game #5: Here we go again … Bethesda’s turn to win as they stave off a late-inning charge by Jersey and escape with a 5-3 victory. Jimmy Rollins drove in two runs with his 13th homer of the year and Lorenzo Cain drove in a pair as well on two hits for Bethesda. Alex Wood got the win to improve to 6-4 – he allowed two runs on three hits while fanning six in 6.1 innings. Jonathan Broxton tossed an ugly three-hit 9th in which he gave up a run, but hung on long enough to get save #13. Brandon Barnes (6), Lucas Duda (14) and Chris Coghlan (4) went deep for Jersey in a losing effort. Jose Quintana (3-4) got the loss with four runs allowed in 5.2 innings. Lead back to 1.5 games over Bethesda …
Game #6: Either horrific luck or horrific managing turned a brilliant 13-K performance by Bethesda starter Sonny Gray into a 5-3 13-inning loss to Jersey. With Bethesda up 1-0 and one out in the 9th inning and Gray crusing along with a 4-hit shutout Gray gave up a double to Lucas Duda
and then with thoughts of pitching performance of the week in his head rather than pull him for a lefty reliever to face lefty hitter Chris Coughlan, Bethesda manager decided to leave Gray in. Coughlan, of course, hit a game-tying triple before Gray could close out the inning. In the 12th, with lefty specialist Josh Outman on the verge of completing two innings of work he was allowed to pitch to a series of righties he had no business facing, walking Brad Boxberger and Chris Gimenez and then giving up a 2-run double to Jeff Bianchi. The Bandicoots fought back the next inning scoring twice as a result of a throwing error by Chris Gimenez. Poor pitcher management continued into the 13th for Bethesda as they opted to go with Joba Chamberlain (who had been shaky all series) rather than higher rated relievers Jonathan Broxton and Fernando Salas and it paid dividends as Chamberlain was yanked after giving up consecutive hits to Lucas Duda and Coghlan … both of whom wound up scoring to give Jersey the 5-3 extra-inning win. Bianchi and Coghlan each had three hits in the game for Jersey while even over 13 innings Bethesda could only manage six hits in total – two of which were off the bat of Travis Snider who finally managed to lift his average above .200.
Series Summary
Logjam continues in the NL East as Jersey was unable to extend its lead over the pack and Bethesda was unable to make up any ground after yet another series split. At this point it looks like the Division winner may be the team that can chew its way to 85 wins.
