Long Beach Dirt Bags @ Jersey Nor’easters
Series Preview
Another good team comes to sunny New Jersey, today only, for a matchup of 2 divisional second place teams. Long Beach by far with the better record.
Game #1:
Close but no cigar for the Nor’easters. J.D. Martinez hits a solo homer in the 10th and Long Beach holds on to win 4-3.
Game #2:
Long Beach’s Yordano Ventura raises his record to 8-0 in a rather easy win over Jersey 7-2. That man again, J.D. Martinez hit a key 2-run homer to put the game out of reach in the 5th.
Game #3:
Jersey’s had enough, they come out swinging with a 5-run 1st inning highlighted by a 3-run Jay Bruce homer and romp to a 10-3 win.  Chris Young gets his 2nd win of the season while R.A. Dickey took his 4th loss.
Game #4:
Staff ace Jeff Smardzija does it again with a 4-hit complete game shutout as the Nor’easters win 4-0. Samardzija is now 9-5 with a 1.65 era. Barnes and Bruce homer for Jersey.
Game #5:
With the series now tied 2-2 Jersey takes a quick 1st inning lead on Lucas Duda’s 12th homer of the season but that was about it for the
Nor’easters. Long Beach’s Matt Shoemaker was dominant and the Dirt Bags win 6-2. Yet again J.D. Martinez homers for Long Beach.
Game #6:
Can the Nor’easters win and even the series and stay above 500? Yes they can! Wily Peralta pitches 6 strong innings while Barnes and Bruce homer in the same game again. Jersey survives a late game come back and win 4-3. Victor Martinez hits his 19th homer of the year
for Long Beach.
Series Summary
The series is split 3-3 but somehow Jersey feels like a winner playing even with a better team.

Tijuana takes the series 5-2.

Pittsburgh  Lumber Company @ Columbus  Explorers
Series Preview
NL East vs. Central – the Lumber Company is playing .500 ball, BUT are only 1 game out of 1st, East is either really tough, or really (something else). The Explorers are hovering just below the .345 mark (based on recent good fortunes – WOW, that’s says a lot about them too). Well, next will might be better (or worse) but let’s play this years games and see what happens ….
Game #1:
Oberholter – (a future star – that’s still a big wait and see) makes his first start of the year and he makes it count tossing a CG 7 hitter giving up 1 run, Moustakas (5) tags him for a HR in the 8th. Dunn (9) and Nunez (3) light up the boards for the home team by each hitting a 2 run homer.
PIT 1-7-1 LP Eovaldi (1-5)COL 4-5-0 WP Oberholtzer (1-0)Eovaldi wasn’t all that bad with 4 hits in 6 innings, but the 2 dingers did him in.
Game #2:
Same score as game one but the sides are reversed as Verlander tosses the 7 hit CG (7ks). Teixeira unloads in the 6th to bread the 1-1 tie (both of those runs came in the 1st). Axelrod takes the loss.
PIT 4-6-0 WP Verlander (4-5)COL 1-7-2 LP Axelrod (0-3)
Game #3:
We’re upping the ante in this one as the final is 5-1. Explorers plate 3 in the 4th add a couple of single runs in the 6th and 7th and Happ loses the chance for a shutout in the 9th on a Lucroy rbi double (2 for 5 in the game). Avila (4) does a solo shot for Columbus.
PIT 1-11-2 LP Lewis (4-3)COL 5-7-1 WP Happ (4-2) S Varvaro (7)NOTE – so far in the 3 games the team with the least number of hits HAS won!
Game #4:
A day off for both teams and it seems the Explorers liked it better. However the trend of the team with the fewest hits winning continues
(they even had fewer walks, 3 to 5). Tepesch goes 8.2 innings, but just couldn’t get the last out so Dunn comes in, walks a batter and Varvaro is called on to close it out in the 9th and he does to preserve a 3-0 Columbus win. Desmond hits #13 – Tepesch also gets an rbi on a double. Kemp had 3 of the Lumber Company’s 8 hits.
PIT 0-8-1 LP Miley (5-5)COL 3-7-0 WP Tepesch (4-5)
Game #5: This one turns into a slugfest and the final looks a lot closer than the game felt and the winning team actually had the MOST hits.Lumber Company bats get 2 runs in the 2nd and then the Explorers score 5. Lumber Company gets 2 more in the 4th, Columbus gets 1. Lumber
Company gets another in the 6th so it’s 6-5 Columbus coming to the bottom half and the Explorers explode for another 5 spot to make it 11-5. Blackmon got two hits in the game – a bases loaded triple and a 2 run HR (5). Desmond cracked #14 for 2 more runs – Carpenter had 3 hits. The Lumbering bats were Rutledge who had a spectacular game going 3 for 4 with 4 rbis, 2 runs and 2 doubles. Kemp had 2 hits including HR #12, Kipnis added a pair of singles. Pitching wasn’t much of an issue, however Tomlin did hang around long enough (5 innings) to get the win.PIT 9-12-1 LP DeSclafani (0-2)COL 11-14-0 WP Tomlin (2-2) S Dunn (4)
Game #6:
Alright all you Lumber Company fans – this game was for you. The Tree Choppers manage 14 hits and 10 runs to run away with this one
as Eovaldi again tosses a 4 hitter (7 ip, 4 hits, 0 runs, 5ks) – Oberholtzer on the other hand was tossing canon fodder – 12 hits in 5.1 innings!Tree Chopper offense led by: Lucroy (2/4 3 rbis, HR #4), Gose (2/3, 2 rbis, 3 runs, HR#2, Arenciba (replacing Lucroy – rest) a HR #1).
PIT 10-14-0 WP Eovaldi (2-5)COL 2-8-0 LP Oberholtzer (1-1)
Series Summary
Series goes a surprising 4-2 for Columbus and it was based more on their pitching (??) than their offense. Not sure what that says for either team, but it was fun series (well for Columbus fans anyway).
