Tempe  Tempers @ Jersey  Nor’easters
Series Preview
Biggest weekend of the year to date, mighty Tempe is coming to town and the games are all sellouts. The Nor’easters are looking to get
over 500, can they do it against the Tempers?
Game #1:
Jersey scores in the 1st, 3rd and 4th innings and goes onto to win the game 4-1. Jeff Samardzija pitches 8 innings of one run ball for the win lowering his era for the season to 1.89. Boxberger gets his 10th save. Ryan Braun homers for Tempe’s lone run.
Game #2:
The Nor’easters Wily Peralta of all people hits a 2-run double in a 3 run 5th inning for all the runs Jersey would score. It was enough as the Nor’easters win the game 3-1. Peralta pitches 7 innings for the win and Boxberger gets his 11th save. Tempe manages only 4 hits. O. Despaigne takes the loss for Tempe.
Game #3:
In a low scoring see-saw game where the lead changed hands a couple of times Tempe gets into the win column by a score of 4-3.  Prince Fielder drives in the deciding run with a pinch hit single. Iwakuma the win for Tempe. Jose Quintana pitched well for Jersey but the bullpen let him down.
Game #4:
Yadier Molina cracks a 3-run homer in the 6th inning for the only runs of the game. Tempe wins 3-0 in another low scoring close game. Wei-Jin Chen pitches 8 innings of 3-hit ball for the win and Holland the save.
Game #5:
O. Despaigne comes back on short rest for Tempe and just doesn’t have it. He leaves after 4 innings giving up 5 runs that proved to be all Jersey needed for a 5-1 win. Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the win. The downer for Jersey was that Chris Coghlan was lost for 11 games due to injury.
Game #6:
This is it, Jersey’s record stands at 29-29, can they crack the 500 barrier……YES, they can. Jeff Smardzija wins his second game of the series 5-1 going 7 innings of one-run 3-hit ball raising his record to 8-5. Not only that but he was the hitting star as well with key 2-run double that put the Nor’easters ahead 2-1 after Tempe took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 6th.
Series Summary
The Nor’easters take the series 4-2 from Tempe going over the 500 mark at 30-29. They hold the mighty Tempers to only 11 runs in 6
games.

New York  Outlaws @ Bethesda  Bandicoots
Series Preview
Bethesda tries to crawl closer to visiting division leaders New York.
Game #1: Jonathan Broxton did his best to capsize Bethesda’s chances for a come-from-behind win against crap-tossing Wandy Rodriguez and the New York Outlaws, but he managed to hang on long enough to preserve a 5-4 win.A frustrating game for Bethesda hitters against the itchy lefty Rodriguez. Wandy-man came into the game as an adjusted Grade 1, but still manage to confound the ‘coots hitters. The frustration was compounded by Bethesda starter Jake Arrieta who continued to be incapable of stringing together decent starts. Arrieta started the Bandicoots of against the 8-ball, allowing runs in each of the first two innings – RBI single by David Ortiz in the 1st, solo homer by Juan Uribe (5) in the 2nd.Lorenzo Cain evened things up in the 4th with his 2nd homer of the season, but Arrieta just can’t stand to have anything too easy so he
gave up another run off a Uribe double in the 5th which put New York up 3-2.Wandy’s luck finally ran out in the 7th – OK, errors by Ortiz and a crappy offline outfield throw by Angel Pagan didn’t help either – when
Bethesda scored twice off a double by Andre Ethier high off the left field wall which made it 4-3.Carlos Ruiz made it 5-3 with his first homer of the year off Neil Ramirez in the 8th which set the stage for the Broxtonian meltdown in the 9th.Broxton wound up giving up three hits in the 9th including a run and had his bacon saved by Ethier who threw out Gerardo Parra trying to score on a deep flyout. For Broxton, it was his 8th save of the season with Fernando Salas getting the win for being in the right place at the right time with one
shutout inning of baseball that evened his record at 3-3. Rodriguez (0-1) got the loss for New York.
Game #2: An early game laugher turned serious as the Outlaws almost squandered a 7-0 lead, but managed to squeak out a 7-6 win to even the series.Alex Cobb was craptastic for Bethesda, getting the yank in favor of Jake Odorizzi after just three innings in which he gave up four runs on six hits with a walk.Alexi Ramirez provided the biggest thorn in the Bandicoots’ side with 3 hits in five at bats, scoring twice and driving in two. Angel Pagan aso had three hits for the Outlaws scoring once and driving one in while stealing a base.Odorizzi lasted five innings, but managed to stay out of the decision column despite allowing three runs to score in his first inning of work. The losing honors went to Cobb (3-2).Hiroki Kuroda (4-5) got the win for New York but had to be yanked before dying the death of a thousand cuts at the hands of the Bethesda hitters who came back from a 7-0 deficit after four innings to jam six runs and 9 hits between the 5th and 7th innings. The Outlaws’ relief trio of Kenley Jansen, TJ McFarland and Fernando Rodney squashed the Bandicoots’ comeback attempt with only one hit allowed in the final two innings. The save went to Rodney who now has six on the season.David Peralta had a nice 4/5 game at the plate for Bethesda including a run, three RBIs and his 3rd homer of the season. Jon Jay added three hits and scored twice with Adrian Gonzalez homering for the 12th time this year as well.
Game #3: Jimmy Rollins’ 8th inning grand slam off Jake Peavy made a close game not close and gave Bethesda a deceptively lop-sided 7-0 win. Conor Gillaspie had three hits for Bethesda. Anthony Rendon had two hits and drove in two. For Rollins, it was his 8th homer of the season.Alex Wood (3-3) got the win for Bethesda with eight innings of three-hit ball. Peavy (4-4) was handed the loss and saw his ERA rise to 2.56. Obviously with guys like Peavy posting ERAs like that, New York is having the opposite problem from Bethesda whose starters are still struggling to show any consistency.Carlos Beltran had two of the three Outlaws’ hits.
Game #4: Cole Hamels was very good, Sony Gray was very bad and Lorenzo Cain was very hurt as New York evened the series 4-2.Hamels (7-3) allowed just one run on five hits in eight innings while Gray gave up four runs on nine hits in just five innings. Really? For Pete’s sake … throw me a fricking bone here guys.David Ortiz hammered tater #17 for New York – a two-run blast in the first inning off Gray (5-4). Fernando Rodney got save number two in the series and #7 on the season.Cain ripped himself a new one stretching a single into a double to lead off the 1st inning for Bethesda and was expected to be out 10 days. One bright spot was that Bethesda’s pen held the Outlaws to one hit over the last four innings.
Game #5: Marwin Gonzalez played just half the game but made the most of his two at bats with a grand slam and a two-run double to lift Bethesda 7-5 over New York. The homer was Gonzalez’s 3rd of the year and Bethesda’s second slam of the series.Carlos Beltran (6) homered for New York.Glen Perking (0-1) took the loss for New York after allowing the two-run double to Gonzalez in the 8th. Joba (the Hut) Chamberlain evened out at 2-2 with the win and Jonathan Broxton tossed a reasonably solid 9th to get save #9. Jimmy Rollins (9) continued to show unexpected power for the Bandicoots with a homer in the 2nd inning off starter Hector Noesi. Of course, Rollins is still hitting a nauseating .220 but oh well.
Game #6: The final game of the series ended with a bang – the sound of Carlos Ruiz’s tibia snapping and Alexi Ramirez’s bat as the Outlaws split the series with a 4-3 10th inning win.Ramirez homered off Jake Arrieta (ugh … 6 ip, 7 hits, 3 er) and drove home the winning run with a single in the top of the 10th off Joba Chamberlain (2-3).Ruiz got clonked in the second inning by Aaron Harang and will be out about 10 days. Harang didn’t work into the decision with the win going to Kenley Jansen who tossed 2-1/3 innings of shutout relief.Angel Pagan and Chase Utley each had two hits for New York. Adrian Gonzalez and Conor Gillaspie did the same for Bethesda in a losing effort.
Series Summary
The series did little to loosen up the log jam forming in the NL East with New York (30-28) sitting three games up on 4th place Bethesda (27-31).Bethesda heads to Sacramento next week while New York heads home to host Tempe.
