Grand Haven  Gators @ Jersey Nor’easters
Series Preview
Jersey looks to get back to 500 in this series with the Grand Haven Gators.
Game #1:
Leonys Martin leads off the 1st inning with a home run and the Nor’easters don’t look back. Howie Kendrick adds a big 2-run double in the 7th and Matt Dominguez puts the icing on the cake with a solo homer in the 8th. Chris Young gets the win and Boxberger the save.
Jersey wins 5-2.
Game #2:
Hyun-Jin Ryu takes a 2-0 lead into the 9th inning only to see Grand Haven’s Joey Votto hit a 2-run homer to tie the game. This was countered by a walk off home run from Matt Dominguez in the bottom of the 9th to win it for Jersey 3-2. Ryu went all the way to even
his record at 1-1. Ervin Santana took the tough luck loss.
Game #3:
Grand Haven gets into the win column with a 3-2 win of their own. Danny Valencia’s solo homer in the 8th turns out to be the deciding hit for the Gators. A.J. Burnett pitched 8 strong inning to get the win with rookie Kyle Hendricks taking the loss.
Game #4:
Jersey’s Jeff Samardzija coasts to an easy 11-3 win over the Gators. This came after Erick Aybar gave Grand Haven a quick 2-0 lead in the
1st inning hitting a 2-run homer. Lucas Duda had a big game for Jersey with 3 hits, 4 RBI and his 11th home run.
Game #5:
For the second straight game Jersey had to overcome a 1st inning homer, this time by Jose Bautista. They did just that with 2 runs in the first, one in the 3rd and 3 more in the 4th to win 6-3. Wily Peralta pitched good enough to get the win. Lucas Duda had 2 hits and 2 key RBI in the win.
Game #6:
Grand Haven’s Zack Walters hit a back breaking 3-run homer in the 5th that was the winning hit for the Gators. Charlie Morton pitched 8 innings allowing no earned runs for the win. Grand Haven wins 4-2.
Game #7:
The Nor’easters need this game to get back to 500. Not this week. Grand Haven pounds out 12 hits beating up on Ryu while Ervin  Santana was sharp. Carl Crawford and Zack Walters each have 3 hits for the Gators as the Gators win 6-2.
Series Summary
Jersey wins the series 4-3 but falls one game short of reaching 500.

Sacramento  Capitals @  Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview

Sacramento (13-33, last place NL West) vs. Columbus (15-30, last place NL Central) as the two teams battle for supremacy of the NL basement – loser wins! Both teams lack pitching this year and have their eyes on the future but this week they are playing to NOT be the worst!

Game #1:

Sacramento takes the 1st big step to not being the worst by smacking 3 HRs in an 8-3 victory. Springer (6), Flowers (4) and Pujols (4) lead the way, Puljols gets 3 rbis on 4 hits in the game. Nelson gets his 1st win of the season with 5.1 5 hit pitching.

SAC 8-13-0 WP Nelson (1-5)

COL 3-6-0 LP Milone (2-4)

Game #2:

Sacramento continues to use the long ball – 3 more homers – to eeck out the 4-3 victory in 11 innings. Heroics included a 9th inning game tying blast by Olt (5) with 1 out and a 1 out winning shot by Springer (7) in the 11th. Marisnick added the other HR (1) among his 4 hits in the game.

SAC 4-14-2 WP Tazawa (1-2)

COL 3-9-0 LP Perez (1-3)

Col HR – Carpenter (5)

Game #3:

Capitals continue to roll – only 1 long ball in this one – but it was a 2 run shot by Dickerson (4 for 4 with 2 rbis) and Dan Haren goes 6.1
innings (6 hits, 1 run, 6 Ks) to bring them a 4-2 win. Baker pitches well for 7 innings, 6 hits, 3 ER, 10 Ks, but no support seals his fate.

SAC 4-8-0 WP Haren (6-4) S Marshall (1)

COL 2-10-2 LP Baker (3-3)

Game #4: 2nd half of the series continues as before as the Capitals capitalize on 4 more homers to amass 10 runs. Peacock and a 4 other pitcher hold off the Columbus (seemingly anemic) offense to prevail in the 10-3 onslaught. Asche (2), Mesoraco (6), Owings (1) and Alcantara (3) get the Sacramento dingers. Owings goes 3 for 5 with 4 rbis. GAME FEATURED 3 ejections: Tomlin (Col), Ross and Scheppers (SAC) for bean balls – Tepesch hit 2 Caps before he left the game for total of 5 HBP in the game. Pujols left the game when he was hit, but he’ll be back tomorrow.SAC 10-13-2 WP Peacock (4-7)COL 3-9-0 LP Tepesch (2-5)
Game #5:
Explorer ace, Shane Greene takes to the hill, gives up a homer in the 1st to Wong (9) then settles down – but only until the 3rd when his
shoulder tightens up. Really tightened as the post game MRI showed and he will be out for at least 23 days – and will be doing a DL stint.
Groans from the few Explorer fans who were at the game (low wins and low TEMPS kept the crowd down). Meanwhile, the Explorers were up 3-1 when he Greene left the game and Belisario actually managed to pitch 3.1 innings in relief and only give up 1 run. Explorers went on to score 2 more and keep the lead and win 1! Springer (8) hit another HR for the Capitals in the loss.
SAC 2-5-1 LP Ross (3-5)COL 5-7-1 WP Belesario (1-1)
Game #6:

Another 11 inning game as both Nelson (6.2 ip, 6 hits, 2 runs, 6 ks) and Milone (9 ip, 3 hits, 2 runs, 12 ks) are tough on the hill. For Milone you couldn’t ask for much more but the bad luck part was him giving up a 2 run HR to Dickerson (8) IN THE 9th that tied the game! – OUCH!

Dickerson then added to the Explorer misery when he singled home the go ahead run in the 11th – Dickerson came in the game late and went 2 for 2 with a run and all 3 Capital rbis. Marshall got the win in relief – pitched 3 innings, 1 hit, 1 walk and 4 ks.

SAC 3-6-1 WP Marshall (1-1)

COL 2-8-0 LP Varvaro (2-3)

 Series Summary

For the home team it was a dismal series (especially after the previous week when they won a series). For Sacremento, it lifted them out of the bottom of the entire NL by taking 5 of 6 (they now have a 2 game advantage on the Explorers in that category). Or – the Explorers can now be considered the best – the best of the worst!

Columbus is all set for its trip to Long Beach – probably another tough week, but hey, its baseball and that’s good.

Game #6:

MAN 6-4 MAN completes the rout on Holliday’s 2-run jack in the 12th.

Game #6:

All Buchanan as HOL cruises 6-0.

Game #7:

Game #2:

Save #12 for Jonathan Papelbon of the Stalkers.

Game #6:

CRUSADERS 5, STALKERS 2 (12 Innings)

The 3rd extra-innings game of the series. The hero was Brett Gardner who hit a walk-off HR off of Fernando Abad in the bottom of the 12th. Gardner also had 2 stolen bases, bringing his total to 12 for the season.

Tommy Kahnle gets his 2nd win in relief for T.C.

Series Summary

Series split, 3-3. Three games went to extras, four games were decided by a single run.

Almost a 1/3 into the season & Traverse City almost has half of their win total from last season, so there has been definite signs of improvement. Team is really happy with young Devon Travis for the Majors’ Blue Jays — who is showing that he’s going to be a nice contributor to the Crusaders’ future.
