Tempe Tempers @ Jersey Nor’easters

Series Preview

The bad news is the juggernaut called Tempe is coming to town. Tempe, the team with an All-Star at every position with an All-Star backing up every position. Tempe, the team still making trades to obtain All-Stars for their farm roster. Yes, that Tempe.

The good news is that the Nor’easters will almost certainly improve their 2015 draft position.

Series Summary

…..and I was right. Tempe sweeps the series 6-0 holding the Nor’easters to only 29 hits in 6 games. Some of the games were close but
Tempe always found a way to win. Tempe’s Iwakuma raised his record to 19-3 with 2 wins in the series and the season is barely half done. Not much more to say.

Long Beach Dirt Bags @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview

Long Beach Dirt Bags at Columbus Explorers – both teams looking at the losing end of things, Explorers in the midst of an 11 game losing streak (just need 4 starters – not greedy – hah). [Short report this week]

Game #1:

Explorers break losing streak – Oberholtzer pitches gem (what was hoped for all year -3 hit complete game shutout, 8 Ks). COL 8 LBT 0.

Top it off – Oberholtzer hits HR (1). Bad news, after the game his arm went dead and he’ll be gone for the rest of the year.

Game #2:

Losing streak now at 1 as Explorer rally to tie game in 9th fails to produce win and Dirt Bags plate 2 in 11th for 7-5 victory. Ramirez and
Parra each get 4 hits, Martinez gets 2. Hughes gets the win in relief (1-1). Victorino (11) and D.Solano (6) homer for home team.

Game #3:

Long Beach extends Explorers new losing streak to 2 with an 8-7 victory scoring the winning run in the top of the 9th to break the 7-7 tie. Explorers scored 5 in 3rd and 1 in 4th to build a 6-1 lead, but Happ lost control, walked in some, then let the bullpen do the same as Long Beach belts 13 hits PLUS 9 walks along the way. BAD NEWS – Recker takes a pitch on the body and will be out 33 days.

WP Stutes (1-1) S Kintzler (11)

Game #4:

New losing streak reaches 3 as Miley (W 4-10) pitches complete game 6 hitter enroute to 8-3 Dirt Bag win. Ramirez (6) and Konerko (9) homer back to back in the 4 run second. Axelrod serves up the fodder (3-5).

Game #5:

New Losing Streak ENDS as Explorers take game 5 5-3 behind Tommy Milone (W 8-3) and Bruce Chen (S 4). Milone does the Oberholtzer thing (HR- 1 not the injury) along the way along wth Carpenter (10 and Desmond (14) for the home team. Middlebrooks belts #15 for Long Beach. Arroyo takes the loss (6-8).

Game #6:

In the finale the Explorers earn a split with a 9-6 victory that where all 9 runs came from the 6th inning on. Score was 6-0 Dirt Bags when
Columbus came to bat in the 6th. 2 runs in the 6th, 2 in the 7th and 5 in the 8th. And all this on 9 hits (and 4 walks). D.Solano hits 3 run HR (7), Carpenter bets #11 and Blackmon pokes #5. Middlebrooks hit a 2 run shot (16) and Konerko #10. Varvaro gets the win (2-3), Belisario the save (3). Kintzler gets a BS (5) and loss (2-4).

Game #6:

Guthrie didn’t pitch badly in the finale, but his defense let him down with a couple of errors leading to two unearned runs. The Cougars

TCC 11, SBL 3

Series Preview
A couple middle of the division teams square off with slim chances to gain any ground down the stretch.
Game #1: Lynn vs. Hellweg Yinzers lead 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th but some home town drama is brewing. Romo enters the game and promptly allows Villar a gap shot for 2 bags. Brantley brings his 8 game hitting streak to the plate in a pinch-hit role for McLouth but sees it fall with a slow chopper to Andrus. Villar on 3rd with 2 outs and LaRoche strokes a laser to right center to tie the game with his 47th RBI. The righty-crusher Chisenhall gets a free pass and Ziegler relieves Romo as he has a strained neck from those 2 wall-rockets. Wind whistles through the Roseville bench as the warning track powered Maldonado flips the warm-up doughnuts. Ziegler, looking a little worn down as he’s already logged 75 innings, still musters a snarl as he takes the signs. Olivo is setup outside low but the fastball tails to main street and Maldonado meets it square, Eaton races into the gap for the 3rd time this inning but he can’t reach it! It’s to the wall and LaRoche scores as the crowd goes nuts!!

IRN 3 RVT 4

Game #2: Westbrook vs. Vargas V-Mart goes deep and the Yinzers take it. Two 1-run games to start the series between these evenly matched foes.

IRN 2 RVT 1

Game #3: Hellickson vs. Matsuzaka This one takes extra innings as it’s all notted up 2-2 after regulation.  Villar boots one in the top of the 11th to give Andrus 1st base. Andrus promptly steals 2nd but it’s not enough as he tries to steal 3rd too, but is nailed by Lobaton, 1 out. With two outs and nobody on Janssen looks like he will get out of the inning unscathed but no, he walks Cargo. Cargo steals 2nd and then Hosmer crushes a 2-run shot to right center. AARGH! Gyorko follows that shot up with one of his own, just over the glove of Pence. Janssen can’t believe it the turn of events as he finally gets the 3rd out but now down by 3. Romo records his 7th save.

IRN 5 RVT 2

Game #4: Maholm vs. Gausman Roseville scores 2 in the 9th again to make it mildly interesting but Iron City takes it and now leads the series 3-1

IRN 6 RVT 4

Game #5: Koehler vs. Gonzalez The Yinzers lead 1-0 after 7 1/2 innings. Ziegler, in his 61st appearance of the year, gets Weeks out to start the bottom of the 8th.   McLouth pinch-hits for the pitcher and slaps a single to left. Frasor enters the game for Iron City. McLouth swipes 2nd on VMarts rubber arm and is in scoring position. Villar steps in and quickly goes down flailing, 2 outs. Aoki hits it to LeMahieu, looks like the ball game as he has a 44 game consecutive errorless streak going, but NO! LeMahieu throws it wildly to Hosmer!! McLouth rounds 3rd and runs right through the red light. Hosmer gets a handle on it the throws a strike to VMart but McLouth is safe as the leather misses him. Tie game as Aoki takes 2nd base on the play. Brantley then lashes one to left and Cargo takes it on the bounce, Aoki had a big lead and was off with the pitch, it’s going to be a bang-bang play at the plate and he’s…………SAFE!  Thorns take the lead 2-1 and Albers secures the W with a solid save.

IRN 1 RVT 2

Game #6: Lynn vs. Hellweg Seesaw battle with 4 lead changes in the first 5 innings. Yinzers score 2 in the top of the 6th to make it a 5-5 game. Once again, the bullpen will decide the outcome. Hanson on the hill to start the bottom of the 7th vs. Aoki and Aoki wins the at bat with a clean single to center.  Aoki steals 2nd for his 10th of the season (Roseville’s 4th theft of the game) and takes 3rd as Andrus can’t handle the throw. Pressure ratchets up a couple notches. Edgin relieves Hanson and Delmon Young trots out to right field. Jeff Baker pinch-hits for LaRoche and bloops one to left allowing Aoki to score the eventual game winner.

IRN 5 RVT 6

Series Summar
Four 1 run games in the series and the Thorns win three of them to split the series. A lot of good games in the series as both teams
fought hard. IRN 3 RVT 3
