Manhattan Project @
Selkirk Steelers

Series Preview

What a mismatch series as the hapless team from Selkirk had to play the
big city boys from Manhattan. Fernandez and Darvish going 3 times in 6
games. Our only prayer was not to be no hit.

Game #1:

Fernandez had a no hitter until 1 out in the 9th when Lavarnway hits a
pinch hit homer to avoid this horrible fate. Manhattan got 12 runs and
had two buck homers. Manhattan 12 Selkirk 1

Game #2:

Wells and Van Slyke homers Selkirk is 2 hit by Yu. Manhattan 8 Selkirk 1

Game #3:

Manhattan was cruising until Selkirk scored 3 in the 8th as Smyly blows
it with Panda and Adams homering, Selkirk 5 Manhattan 4

Game #4:

Once again the Manhattan pen implodes as Street gives up 3 as Freidman
homers. Selkirk 6 Manhattan 4

Game #5:

Porcello wins 9-4 as Wells gets 4 hits.

Game #6:

Manhattan defense costs costs Fernandez 3 unearned runs but Manhattan
gets 10 as Wells drove in 3 more.

Series Summary

*

Selkirk felt like they should not have won a game but two Manhattan
bullpen disasters cost the second place team two wins. While Manhattan
is helped winning 4 of 6 they really should have done better the way
they out played Selkirk.

Clovis Wheat Kings @
Long Beach Dirt Bags

Series Preview

5th place Long Beach comes to Clovis for a series against the division
leading Wheat Kings.

Game #1:

Dirt Bags 5 Clovis 3

John Lester improves to 7-1 and makes the Wheat Kings sorry they flipped
him in a deal this off season.

Game #2:

Wheat Kings 8 Long Beach 1

Liriano improves to 6-1. Castro leads the hit parade with 3 including a
triple to go with a pair of RBI.

Game #3:

Wheat Kings 5 Dirt Bags 3

Tuiausosopo and Saunders went deep back to back in the first of Arroyo,
the third of the season for both. Cashner and a trio of relievers made
it hold up despite a pair of big flies from Norris. Grilli picked up his
11th save.

Game #4:

Clovis 4 Long Beach 1

Griffin improves to 6-0, Grilli notches his 12th save, and Cruz connects
for his 11th round tripper, but the Clovis faithful was even more
impressed with Yordano Ventura who made his MWBL debut with 5 very
strong innings. Clovis got to him in the 6th with a combination of speed
and some timely hitting but clearly Long Beach has a keeper.

Game #5:

Clovis 4 Long Beach 0

Castro hit his 8th homer of the year, a two run shot, in the first to
give Gio Gonzalez all he would need for his 6th win of the year. Gonzo
tossed a complete game 2 hit shutout while striking out 8 and walking
only 1.

Game #6:

Clovis 11 Long Beach 1

Hunter drives home 4, Reyes contributes 3, and Cruz knocks in a pair to
lead Clovis. Harvey picked up his 5th win as Lester was knocked out
after 5.

Game #7:

Long Beach 3 Clovis 1

Ramirez drives home a pair to support Miley’s strong mound effort to
give the Dirt Bags the win in the series finale.

Series Summary

*

Long Beach takes the first and the last but Clovis takes all five in
between for a 5-2 series win.

Series Preview

Valdosta Snappers (17-21) at Columbus (20-19) in the epic battle for 2nd
place in the NL Central and bragging rights on who gets first look WAY
UP THE MOUNTAIN toward Tempe! Ah!!!!

Game #1:

Columbus gets off to fast start with 6-1 win, Victorino 2 hits/2 rbis,
Zimmerman 2 run HR (5) lead the way.

WP Rusin (5-1) – ace of the staff?

LP Teheran (4-4)

Game #2:

Milone and Hughes battle long and hard for this one each giving up a run
in the 2nd – but that was it. Game finally ends in the 14th when
Reynolds drives in his 2nd run (the go ahead run) and Hecharvarria
follows with another for a 3-1 win. Hughes goes 9 innings, 8 hits, 9ks –
Kimbrel gets the win (1-0) with 2 perfect relief innings. LeCure (2-2)
takes the loss.

Game #3:

Valdosta moves to 2-1 series lead with a 6-5 victory in game 3. Up 5-1
in the 6th (Hechevaria 2 run HR (5) part of the onslaught). But in the
6th Columbus ties it with 4 runs on Desmond and De Aza 2 rbi hits. But
Varvaro (0-1) loses it in the 9th as the Snappers plate the winner in
this thriller. Hoover (1-1) gets the win and Kimbrel again makes an
appearance and gets the save (10).

Game #4:

Explorers even things out in game 4 with a come from behind win when
they score 1 in the 7th to tie it at 2-2 and 3 in the 8th to put it
away. Desmond goes 3 for 4 for the home team, Polanco does the same for
Valdosta. Avilan (0-2) takes the loss, LeCure (3-2) gets the win, Dunn
gets the save (6).

Game #5:

Valdosta regains the series lead plating single runs in the 6th and 8th
for a close 3-1 win. Tepesch, the Explorer starter, goes 7, gets the
loss (2-2) but fans 13 in his effort. Albers (4-3) goes 7 to get the
win, Kimbrell gets another save (11).

Zimmerman (6)

Game #6:

Columbus comes right back in game 6 with another 5-2 win to even the
series again. They plated 3 in the 6th to break open the 2-2 tie. The
Snappers defense helped Columbus in this one with 2 gift runs.

Staff Ace – Rusin (6-1) gets the win, Tomlin (1) the save (looks like
he’s done for the year though).

Teheran (4-5) suffers another loss in this series.

Game #7:

Hughes and Milone again face off to settle the series – and again they
both match each other’s performance, the score 3-3 by the time they both
exit. Perez comes in in relief in the 7th and blows the save and then
give up a run in the 8th to take the loss (1-1) as Valdosta come back
from down 3-2 to win 4-3. Mayberry Jr (6) launched a 2 run shot in the
2nd.

Avilan (1-2) picks up the relief win, Kimbrel the save (12).

Series Summary

*

Valdosta takes the series 4-3. If you want a chance to beat the Snappers
you better get to them early because the Avilan/Kimbrell will kill you.
(Hoover and Doolittle are also great for the earlier late innings.
Starters are thin (but look strong next to Columbus <G>).

So, Columbus still owns 2nd, but not by as much, and its tenuous at
best.

Elyria Indians @
Fremont Cannons

Series Summary

*

A two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth gives Fremont a win in the
opener, but Elyria’s pitching would hold the Cannons to five runs in the

PIT 2-0 A.Sanchez remains undefeated at 6-0 as he goes 8 inns. and
allows no runs. Quentin had the RBI and Marte was 3-4. Tillman (2-5) was

tied the game for PIT at 3 all.

Game #3:

VIR 9-7 With a 6-2 lead after 7 inns. and Scherzer on the mound, a VIR
win looked assured. But Quentin and Hardy both blasted 2-run homers for
a 4 run PIT outburst and a tie game in the 8th. And after an RBI single
in the 11th to put PIT up by one, it looked like the VIR win would
become a loss. But after PIT reliever S.Delabar (1-1) walked the first 2
batters in the bottom of the 11th, N.Schierholtz cleared the wall with a
walk-off 3-run homer to make a winner of B.Parker (2-0).

Game #4:

Ramirez each knock in 3 runs and everyone on the Sluggers except Segura
and Cunningham had RBI’s. Haren (3-1) takes the loss and Tillman (3-5)
the win.

Detroit Crime @
Bethesda Bandicoots

Series Preview

The powerhouse Detroit Crime (23-17) take on the shockingly non-sucky
Bethesda Bandicoots (22-18) in a battle of second-place teams.

Game #1:

Justin Smoak’s thrilling sacrifice fly in the 14th netted the Crime with
a nail-biter win in the opener 4-3. Manny Machado homered for his 7th
for Detroit. Dustin McGowan (2-2) got the win, Joaquin Benoit (5) the
save with Alex Wood (3-1) getting tagged with the loss for Bethesda.

Game #2:

Erasmo Ramirez fanned nine Detroit hitters but otherwise got banged up
pretty good as the Crime took their second straight 7-3. The Crime got
homers from Adam Jones (12) and Jhonny Peralta (3) with Chris Davis
getting #14 for the year for Bethesda. Bryce Harper had three RBIs in
the game with a single and a double while fellow National Stephen
Strasburg improved to 7-2 with the win although was unspectacular giving
up three runs in 5.2 innings. Ramirez gave up five runs on seven hits in
six innings for Bethesda to fall to 0-2 (although he did lower his ERA
to 7.56).

Game #3:

Madison Bumgarner out-duelled James McDonald … no really … tossing a
four-hitter as the Crime blanked the Bandicoots 4-0. Bumgarner fanned
seven in the contest while walking two to go to 7-3 on the year.
McDonald (0-3), in easily his best start of the season went the distance
for Bethesda allowing seven hits and five walks to go with seven
strikeouts. Adam Jones was 2/4 with a run and an RBI to lead Detroit.

Game #4:

The Bandicoots stole one from the Detroit books in this one as Anthony
Rendon drove in what would be the game-winner with a sacrifice fly in
the bottom of the 8th to give Bethesda a 4-3 win. Jordan Pacheco cleared
the bases for Bethesda with a bases loaded triple in the 4th which gave
the ‘coots a 3-0 lead. The Crime chipped away with an RBI double by
Gordon Beckham in the 5th and then two runs in the 7th off the bats of
Adam Jones and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Justin Smoak was 3/3 with a run
scored for Detroit. Zack Wheeler (1-2) was hard to get hits off of (just
3 in 7.1 innings and 10 strikeouts) but that was in part due to the fact
that he had trouble locating the plate (5 walks). Shawn Kelley (3-1) got
the win by not allowing a run in 1.1 innings while Alex Wood earned his
first save.

Game #5:

Chris Davis’s 15th homer of the year – a two run shot in the 3rd inning
– proved to be the difference as Bethesda inched closer to a series
split with a 2-1 win. Manny Machado drove in the lone Detroit run with a
double in the 1st inning. He and Chris Stewart had two hits on the day.
Anthony Rendon went 4/4 with a run scored for Bethesda. Jon Jay got
plunked for the 12th time this season. Scott Kazmir (1-3) gave up both
Bethesda runs with 7.1 innings of work in which he allowed eight hits
with a walk and seven Ks. Alex Cobb (3-4) continued to improve in
getting the win with eight innings of work while Alex Wood got save #2.

Game #6:

Tony Cruz doubled into the right field gap scoring Jose Iglesias to give
Bethesda a series split with a 3-2 10-inning win over Detroit. Evan
Longoria (10) launched a two-run shot in the 1st inning to give the
Crime an early lead, but Martin Perez and company held off Detroit for
the next 29 outs. Perez and Crime starter Stephen Strasburg did little
to help hitter strikeout ratios in the game – the lefty got 10 in seven
innings while Stass got nine in just 5.1 innings. Dustin McGowan got
saddled with the loss after the winning run was allowed onboard in the
10th thanks to Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s fumbled pop-up. Alex Wood
continued to attack the stat boards with a win to lift him to 4-1 on the
year. Manny Machado had a pair of doubles and a pair of singles on the
day for Detroit. Anthony Rendon had a double and a single for Bethesda.

Series Summary

*

An extremely tight series with four of the six games decided by one run, but both teams emerge with a split.

beneficiary of all those runs and picks up the win.

S.Diamond. In the end C.Lee prevails for his 7th win as he tosses 8

Goldschmidt.

Hollywood 2, Southbend 0

Game #7:

Early on it looked like the Lynx might shock the ‘Wolves again as they
jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 2 innings. But Werth hits a solo-HR in
the 3rd and Goldschmidt ties it in the 6th with a 2-run HR. Werth then
gives Hollywood the lead with a 2-run HR in the 7th, his 2nd of the
game. The SBL Gomes puts a scare into the ‘Wolves with a solo-HR in the
9th but Cishek manages to retire the last 3 Lynx for his 4th save.

Series Summary

*

Hollywood takes the series 5-2.

Sacramento Capitals @
Tempe Tempers

Series Preview

The Tempe Tempers chose to hand out their 2013 World Series Rings during
their third home stand while their arch rivals the Sacramento Capitals
were in town. The public relations department said the Tempers chose
this series because the teams made a couple big deals during the off
season and this would allow the rings to be given to guys that were
traded. The unofficial word was that Tempe wanted payback for having to
watch the Capitals ceremony the prior two seasons.

Game #1:

Tempe 2-1 – Go ahead single by Duda in the 5th was the Tempe pen needed.
Chacin improved to 7-0

Game #2:

Tempe 7-0 – Santiago went 8.1 scoreless innings. Duda, Davis, and
Soriano all homered.

Game #3:

Tempe 4-2 – Gregorius took Cain deep in the 8th but it was too little
too late. Holland recorded is second save of the series. Three of
Tempe’s runs were unearned.

Game #4:

Tempe 12-2 – Tempe slugged 17 hits in 8 innings

Game #5:

Tempe 2-1 – Cano punished his old team with a go ahead solo shot in the
6th. Chacin moved to 8-0 and Holland recorded his 11th save.

Game #6:

Tempe 5-0 – The Tempe pen helped out with 8 innings in relief.

Series Summary

*

Sacramento never saw the lead after the 4th inning of game one and only
managed to score six total runs during the six game series. It may be a
long season for the Capitals, but they have a bunch of great prospects
and lots of teen spirit.
