AMERICAN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

7/24/2004: Virginia's Russ Ortiz American League Pitcher of the Week.

Russ Ortiz, who capped a 2-0 week with 7 solid innings against Coconut Creek on Saturday in Virginia's 10-1 victory over the Crushers, was named American League Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday for the week ending July 24. Ortiz was 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA for the week In his last 14 innings, Ortiz struck out a league-high 17 batters, but walked 7 and allowed two runs on only 7 hits. On the season the right-hander is 10-6 with a 1.95 ERA and is third on the Sluggers staff in innings pitched with 129. "He's throwing like he should," manager Joe Morgan said. "We've said this many times, he's a No. 1 type pitcher. He's got great stuff. He throws hard, he's got a great curveball, changeup, cutter; he's got all the pitches. He's a good athlete and he's got No. 1 type stuff and that's the way he's throwing right now. He's just been nasty out there."  "Once things start going your way it seems that everything kind of snowballs," Ortiz said. "Earlier in the year it was an avalanche coming down on me. Now I'm able to dodge some of those snowflakes."

7/24/2004: Chicago's Dimitri Young wins A.L. Player of the Week award.

The switch hitting masher has been a constant terror in the No. 4 spot for the Mobsters all season. While he has been a big factor for the Mobsters for months, Dimitri Young got some individual glory on Tuesday, being selected as the American League Player of the Week for the second time this year.  All he did over the last week was carry the Chicago offense. Young hit safely in all six games, and is riding an 11 game hit streak. It seemed as if every time Young swung, a line drive boomed off his bat. For the week, he was 11-for-27 (.407) with 1 double, 3 HR's, 14 RBIs and eight runs scored. He is hitting .283 with 22 doubles, 18 homers and 71 RBIs.  Told that he was looking good at the plate lately, Young chuckled. "I look good? I just keep working, working on my thing and trying to keep it the same way in the game," said Young. He is in the proverbial zone. "It feels pretty good, real good," said Young. "Especially when you help the ball club."

AMERICAN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

7/18/2004: Severn's Brandon Webb American League Pitcher of the Week.

In a short week Brandon Webb threw a 9 inning complete game shutout against the Coconut Creek Crushers.  Webb for the year is now 7-10 with a 4.17 ERA.  "Brandon's going to be a big part of our future, we selected him #1 overall this year and there's a reason for it, he's a special pitcher" said Express General Manager Mike Roberts.  "It's more important for me to be the kind of pitcher that the other teams are afraid to face, like Pedro Martinez," said Webb. "This team expects a lot from me and I don't want to just pitch for the numbers. I want to be the guy."  Roberts is a little more analytical, citing Webb's improved use of the fastball to keep hitters from sitting on his changeup. Others believe the fact that Webb is using his #1 selection as what has provided the motivation for working so diligently.

7/18/2004: Yonge Street's Marcus Giles wins Player of the Week award.

The Stalkers won't have to worry about who's playing second base for the next 5-10 years. That potential riddle was solved in the first round in 1999, when the Stalkers selected Marcus Giles with the #5 pick in the first round. They only have to worry about keeping him healthy on a consistent basis. This week Giles was superb with a very solid offensive week.  Giles went 12 - for - 24  on the week (.500) and also knocked in 6 RBI's along with 2 HR's.  Giles, who went into this weeks games against Chicago .282, finished the week out batting .297, and look towards the .300 mark next week vs. Detroit.  "I'm very happy," Giles said. "I like the front office. They want to win. The front office made a lot of moves to make this team better, were just a year or two away."

"Winning this award sure brings light to the fact that I still did something special, I am just glad that the team got the win, and started out the second half of the season on a high note".  Penny struck out 7 Braves batters along the way, and pitching coach Rick Sutcliff said "He didn't have outstanding stuff or anything, but he had very good location, and location is the key".  For Penny it was his first time winning the American League Pitcher of the Week Award.

A sweep for the Werewolves this week in the American League Awards.  Pitcher of the Week goes to youngster Zach Day, making only his 11th and 12th start of his career/?name=.  Yet his mound presence is outstanding, and his demeanor and make-up remarkable.  "It's what we were looking for when we drafted him in the 3rd round, 59th overall in the 2003 MWBL Draft" said Steve Cutler. This week Day limited the Crusher of Coconut Creek to 3 earned runs in 11 innings pitched.  Day struck out 10, and walked 5 crushers along the way, but picked up two victories along the way.  For the year Day now stands at 8-2 with a 3.43 ERA.  "He just needs to mature and get more start at the major league level" said Cutler "Once he gets more innings, he's going to step up and be a number one or two starter in the Mid-West Baseball League".

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

6/16/2004: Yonge Street's David Riske American League Pitcher of the Week.

A few years ago when doing his scouting reports for the annual draft the Stalkers General Manager Scott Farquharson found a gem in the making, or so he says. " Riske will turn out to be very solid for the Stalkers organization. Riske's fastball is well above average and his curveball is knee buckling, he will be a solid pitcher for the organization".  This week Riske was solid and more.  Facing division foe Chicago Mobsters Riske went out and was lights out in the closers role. In three appearances Riske earned saves in all three of the Stalkers wins for the week.   Riske struck out 4 batters in 3 innings.  For the year Riske now has 14 saves, 1 win, and a 2.52 ERA in 25 innings of work.  "Just what we knew he could do" said Farquharson  "He's starting to show other teams what we saw in him two years ago".

6/16/2004: Buffalo's Javier Lopez wins A.L. Player of the Week award.

When you can add a catcher of Javier Lopez power in the off season you just do it.  That's what Braves General Manager Wally Walczak did.  "He's paying huge dividends right now, and I'd hate to see where we'd be in the standings without Javier" Walczak said.  "He's been our power, and he's been our savior if you know what I mean".  Lopez is now batting .415 on the year, leading all of the Mid-West Baseball League.  Lopez also leads the Mid-West Baseball League in Home Runs with 28, and RBI's with 59.  "Javier could be a contender for the Triple Crown, but it's a long season and I don't want to jinx him".

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Two weeks in a row for the American League, the Pitcher of the week award goes to a pitcher who threw a No-Hitter.  Last week Clemens, this week, Kip Wells.  Kip Wells? Would have thunk it?  Hollywood General Manager Steve Cutler would have "I traded for Wells knowing he'd produce, and this proves my prowness as a General Manager".  Wells who faced the Severn Express his week, walked 3 for the week, and struck out 6 along the way.  "There was only one close play, the others were routine, and Wells just pitched a very exciting game". Cutler said.  Eleven weeks into the season, Wells is 6-1 with a 3.54 ERA.  "I couldn't have pitched this without my teammates support, as well as there fantastic play behind me on defense. This award goes just as much to them, as it does to me" Wells said.

6/11/2004: Detroit's Alfonso Soriano wins Player of the Week award.

Alfonso Soriano has gotten so hot at the plate that the fact that he was named American League Player of the Week for the period of June 5th - 11th was sort of an afterthought.  The Crime's second baseman's
Soriano hit safely in 5 of the 6 games for the week knocking in 8 RBI's and hitting 1 HR.   This was the first career/?name= weekly award for Soriano, who blossomed last year hitting 29 HR's and having 104 RBI's showed his ability once again this week. AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

6/04/2004: Buffalo's Roger Clemens American League Pitcher of the Week.

In an announcement that wasn't exactly shocking news, The Mid-West Baseball League  awarded Roger Clemens with his first American League Pitcher of the Month honor on Monday.  Clemens was nearly perfect in his start this week, only missing being perfect by a lead off walk, and a 4th by Luis Castillo the Braves second baseman.  Clemens did the next best thing, and threw a No-Hitter.  He struck out 17 hitters out of the 29 batters he faced. "The script continues," General Manager Wally Walczak said. "It's unbelievable". "Obviously, at his age and what he's accomplished, he's pitching as good right now as he probably has in the last few years. He's been a tremendous boost to the franchise, to the team, to the city. He's just lifted everybody's spirits".

6/04/2004: Tijuana's Lance Berkman wins Player of the Week award.

"He made some pitches when he had to, he got ahead".  "That's the way I pitch -- come in, throw a lot of strikes, make them swing the bats and work fast, guys on base or not on base," Oswalt said. "It's the same way, whether you start the each and every inning. You have your own guys behind you, and you know if you throw strikes, they will make the plays for you".

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

5/21/2004: Chicago's Kerry Wood Wins A.L. Pitcher of the Week.

The Mobsters have been waiting for years for Wood to display any type of dominance, and maybe their wait has paid off.  Wood is starting to look the part of staff ace.  This year Wood record stands at 4-3  with 3.47 ERA.  "Maybe not what you expect out of the staff ace, but it's starting to come around for him" said Mobsters General Manager John (STRAY) Corrado.  This week, Wood headed east to the scary little town of Fremont, where the pitchers take Steroids, and the hitters don't.  Wood came away with two wins, including a 10 strikeout game.  Wood for the week was 2-0, with 16.1 Innings pitched, walked 6, struck out 18, and allowed only 4 earned runs.  "When K-Wood is on, he is one of the most dominating pitchers, in the Mid-West Baseball League, we just have to get him consistent, and his career/?name= could take off" Said Corrado.

5/21/2004: Chicago's Todd Walker wins A.L. Player of the Week award.

The Mobsters snuck in this week with both the American League Pitcher and Player of the Week.  The Player award after a tough debate went to Todd Walker of the Mobsters.  Very strong consideration went to Hollywood's Andruw Jones, who belted 5 HR's on the week.  But Walker was the story, as he helped the Mobsters to a 6 game sweep of the Cannons of Fremont.  Walker played in 5 of Chicago's 6 games in the series, and had 11 hits in 19 trips to the plate (.579).  Walked hit only 1 HR, but drove in an incredible amount of 12 in those 5 games. Walked also scored 8 runs for the week, and was happy about the award. "it's really nice to win, but I have to acknowledge Jones of Hollywood, who had a great week as well" Walker said.

Is what Bartolo threw this week as the Sluggers took on the Crushers, from Coconut Creek.  Bartolo was in mid season form, dominant overpowering the Crushers making them look silly at the plate.  Colon faced two batters over the minimum, allowing only a weak double that just hit the third base bag and ricochet into foul territory by Steve Smitherman, and he hit Travis Hafner.  The Hafner beaning might have been intentional as Hafner hit a 550 foot ball that was maybe a foot foul, and Bartolo didn't seem to like that too much.  "You don't have impeccable control all game and then suddenly throw a ball behind someone's ass on two straight pitches" said Coconut Creek General Manager Cliff Miller "Will mark down Colon's number for the next time we face them".  Colon, who now stands at (3-2  2.87) for the year was very please with his performance, "I threw the ball well today, I get it over plate, and get a few strikeout when need them, not bad for day's work".

5/02/2004: Chicago's Dimitri Young wins A.L. Player of the Week award.

"Throw at me some more, and I can assure you there will be someone who gets hurt, and it isn't going to be me" Dimitri said after getting hit for a MWBL leading sixth time.  Why do guys throw at him?  Because he hustles maybe?  Either way Dimitri once again proved why he is a marked man when he batted .615 this week as the Mobsters took all five from the Bottle Rockets.  "I'd have to say I was impressed with Dimitri's play, and his ability to get on base" Said Mobsters General Manager John "Stray" Corrado "He works hard every time up". This week DY as they call him in the windy city, knocked in eight RBI's and had eight hits in only thirteen trips to the dish.  Young is now batting .305 with 3 HR's and 27 RBI's on the year.  "I just hope I can stay healthy and be productive all year for us, we could have a shot at the playoffs, but we all have to stay healthy for that to happen" Young said.

AMERICAN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

4/26/2004: Fremont's  Tim Redding Wins A.L. Pitcher of the Week.

What's in the water in Fremont.  Why aren't the visiting pitchers drinking it?  Maybe it's not the water, but the pitching coach.  Jack Morris the pitcher with the most Major League wins in the 80's has his Fremont pitchers on track.  Of the four weeks that the Mid-West Baseball League has been doing the player of the week, Fremont pitchers have won three of those weeks.  "I just want my boys to go out there and be consistent. Their doing that now, but we've got to work harder and get better" said Morris.   This week, it was Tim Redding.  who went 2-0 in his two starts, allowing only fourteen hits in fifteen innings of work.  Redding allowed only one HR.  He walked six, and only struck out four, but he got plenty of ground ball double plays, and that helped him get out of some tough jams.   "Yonge Street General Manager thought that Redding was the one pitcher his offense could tee-off on, but that wasn't the case.  "Fremont continues to surprise everyone", I wished we could have played the when they were cold instead of on fire.

4/26/2004: Oregon's Luis Matos wins A.L. Player of the Week award.

Can Matos get any hotter?  Can Oregon be a sleeper team in disguise?  At 9-14 the Neon Knights are doing better than they expected.  Will they be around .500 at the end of the season?  Odds are against it, unless Luis Matos keeps his hitting up like he has the last two weeks.  Matos who batted .407 in twenty seven at-bats, went out and got hotter as he batted .480 in twenty five at-bats this week.  "Infuego for sure" said his teammate Orlando Cabrera " have never seen a Neon Knight as hot as Matos".
"You really have to give credit to Dan LaPointe the General Manager" said Matos "For sticking with me and keeping me all those years that I sucked, (can I say that here)".  Matos hit one Home Runs, and had one double, but knocked around ten singles for the week, scored four runs, and drove in seven.  Not to bad for a guy who was on the bubble two years ago.

AMERICAN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

4/19/2004:
Fremont's
Mark Buehrle Wins A.L. Pitcher of the Week.

Fremont didn't think there pitching would be this good.  No one did.  Not a single team in the Mid-West Baseball League.  But they are.  Oswalt and Buehrle.  Two weeks ago it was Oswalt, this week it's Buehrle.  Both are 4-0.  Buehrle this week goes 2-0, with a 1.15 ERA.  In his two starts Buehrle goes 15.2 innings, and allows only three runs, (two Earned).  He gives up twelve hits, and strikes out eleven for the week.  "It's such a honor to be the American League Pitcher of the Week" Buehrle said "I feel as though with my start and Roy's we could hang around this division and maybe cause some havoc heading into August and September"  It could be an interesting race in the American League East with Buffalo being the odds on favorite, but when you have a one-two punch like Oswalt and Buehrle, you have to think that the Cannons of Fremont just might be there come the heat of the pennant race. "I'll bet money on or at least some Taco Bell" Said Casey Hoch General Manager of the Cannons.

4/19/2004: Oregon's Luis Matos wins A.L. Player of the Week award.

When your team has a six and eleven record, odds are your not going to have too many player or pitchers of the week.  But for the second straight week the Oregon Neon Knights (6-11) have had one each of the past two weeks.  Last week was Brendan Donnelly, and this week, Luis Matos.  Matos was infuego this week. Matos drove in eleven runs for the week.  Along with those eleven RBI's Matos belted two Home Runs, a double and a triple, and seven singles.  A .407 average in twenty-seven at-bats was an incredible week for the Neon Knight.  "I just hope I can stay healthy and continue to produce for this club.  We need to get some W's on the board, and go out and have the feeling we can win every game".  Neon Knights General Manager Dan LaPointe was happy with Matos, but said we could be .500, we just need some breaks, and some pitching".

AMERICAN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

4/13/2004:
Oregon's
Brendan Donnelly Wins A.L. Pitcher of the Week.

When a relief pitcher gains a pitcher of the week award either the starters just had average weeks, or the reliever was spectacular.  This week it just happened to be that Donnelly had a solid week and the American League starters were just average.  Donnelly who pitches for the Neon Knights of Oregon has two of the clubs three victories.  Not bad for a relief pitcher.  Donnelly picked up the two wins in a matter of four hours.  Pitching his club to victory on the double header day of Monday April 12th.  Buffalo had came in, and was riding a five game winning streak (four of those against Oregon) and then Donnelly shoed up on April 12th.  He pitched 3.2 innings during the double header and the Neon Knights swept the Braves.   Donnelly pitched six innings for the week, walked three, let up three hits, and hit one batter.  During this time frame he allowed zero runs, and struck out four batters. Not to bad for a reliever.

4/13/2004: Buffalo's Marquis Grissom wins A.L. Player of the Week award.

When you have old guys who produce, what do you call yourself?  How about the  Buffalo Braves.  That's what Wally Walczak calls his Viagra taking band of merry old misfits.  Yes they are old, and getting older by the day.  But Wally keeps them producing, like he did this week when Marquis Grissom drove in ten runs.  Yes that's right the 37 year old outfielder drove in ten runs.  More than any other American League player this week.  With one home run, and five extra base hits, Grissom had a solid week.  "Who would have thought that I could drive in tens runs in a week.  Heck, I should be scoring ten, not punching them home" Grissom was quoted as saying.  "I guess the old man that drives this team, might actually know a thing or two about how to run a team".

AMERICAN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK

AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

4/7/2004:
Fremont's
Roy Oswalt American League Pitcher of the Week.

Opening day starts are nice, but when your playing in a division that the champion could come out with a .500 record, you just bite the bullet and do your job.  Right hander Roy Oswalt did just that on opening day.  He gave up four runs on six hit, but managed to pitch 5.1 innings, and the Cannons held on to the win for him.  When you get two starts in a week against Oregon, you should win at least one, if not both of them.  That's what Oswalt did. In his second start against the much hated Neon Knights, Oswalt again got the win, this time going only 5 innings, and getting by with only one un-earned run against him.  "I know better than to talk like this, but the Neon Knights are bad.  Really bad.  I think they have a chance to lose 119 Loses" Oswalt said after his second win against the Knights for the week.

4/7/2004: Virginia's Jose Guillen wins Player of the Week award.

When you have Vladdy in your outfield anything else looks pale by comparisons.  But not for Virginia in week one.  Left fielder Jose Guillen made a monster shout out to the media this week.  After opening up the year in a 0 for 3 spell, Guillen proceeded to go 10 for his next 16, and in doing so, mashed fourteen RBI's, four Home Runs, and scored eight runs.
Guillen went 3-5 with a homer (his fourth in four games) and seven RBI's that led the way in game five of this week series. "Last year I tried to give this guy away, and no one wanted him, look at him now" Said Slugger General Manager Paul Roe.
